Round seven selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Note the 4pm kick-off on Good Friday folks – this game has a habit of sneaking up on me (and starting without me...rude). Both sides head into this game off the back of last round victories, although the strength of the opposition is questionable in both cases. In some ways these two clubs have similar issues – both have big forward packs but lack the creative playmakers to capitalise. Adam Reynolds has a very reliable kicking game but it's almost too reliable – there's not a lot of X factor in his play. While they got the win against an under-strength Panthers they only just got there. All too often they seemed hellbent on going around the Panthers. Now perhaps they were playing to a game plan, and they did win, but a repeat of that style is just too predictable to get past the Bulldogs. Cody Walker though, did show some flourishes so perhaps the Bunnies have a work in progress there. Having criticised the team in the red and the green the Bulldogs attack doesn't have me salivating either. All the interest (for me) lies in the battle of the forwards. The winner on that front wins the game, and I do lke that Bulldogs engine room. The other Reynolds (Josh) to score the match-winner.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 6

Result – Bulldogs 24 defeated Rabbitohs 9

Newcastle Knights vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Knights continue to compete but winning seems a bridge too far. Their only win this year was against the Titans when just about everything went wrong for their opponent. Plenty went wrong for the Chooks in round five – their defence was barely there against the Broncos, but you would expect their coaching staff to focus us on that in the lead up to this clash. There's certainly nothing wrong with the Roosters attack, so that should click into gear at some point during the 80 minutes. My gut feel – a low scoring first half and the tricolours class with the ball to shine brightly in the last quarter of the game.

Verdict – Roosters by 14

Result – Roosters 24 defeated Knights 6

Brisbane Broncos vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

I'm having one bet this weekend, and it's a slightly unusual one – I'm backing the Titans with a 16.5 point start at $1.53. While I expect the Broncos to prevail I've a sneaky feeling the Titans are going to pull a competitive effort out of their collective rear ends on Good Friday. Peats and McQueen are back for the Titans, and there's a few ex-Broncos in that Titans line-up (Taylor, Copley and Wallace) who will give their all. The Broncos are without Ben Hunt, and I'm not entirely convinced that the Broncos playmaking duo of Milford and Nikorima will work. I have to go with the Broncos on class alone, but don't let me talk you out of tipping an upset here.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos 24 defeated Titans 22

Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

Unfortunately for the Sea Eagles the Storm don't lose two games in a row very often. The last time that happened was in 2015 in rounds 14 and 15 during the Origin period of the season. Note that Munster and Bromwich (Jesse) have been named on an extended bench but it would be a surprise if either are playing this weekend. The Storm played in atrocious conditions in their round five loss and if there's one team you don't want to face in the wet it's the Sharks. They'll be back near their best this weekend. The Sea Eagles were surprisingly awful against the Dragons. Let's hope that was a one-off rather than an indication of where their season is heading. Both sides take to this game with under-strength forward packs but Bellamy will give the purple forwards a simple game plan and the best brains in the business will win the game from there..

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 30 defeated Sea Eagles 26

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

While most of the teams I had pencilled in for greatness in 2017 are letting me down, the Raiders are starting to look like the side we all hoped they could be. Competitive losses against the better sides and dominant victories over the poorer sides sees them sitting on the cusp of the top four. Meanwhile the Warriors are on the cusp of the top eight after successive victories at Mt Smart. Their challenge now, as it always has been, is to win a game in Australia. They haven't done that in season 2017 thus far, and I'm not enthused about them breaking their duck in Canberra.

Verdict – Raiders by 10

Result – Raiders 20 defeated Warriors 8

St George Illawarra Dragons vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – WIN Stadium

Few if any would have thought the Dragons would be on the top of the NRL ladder at any point this season. Five wins from six starts and a very healthy points differential – this is a side that is putting opponents to the sword. To think their coach was expected to come under a ton of scrutiny this season but the critics have put their mouths in their pockets for now. There's no reason to doubt them this weekend either – playing at home against a team without their co-captains and their first-choice fullback and hooker. It's hard to measure how much Thurston is worth to the fortunes of the Cowboys but the short answer is 'heaps'. The Dragons have racked up 89 points in the last three rounds while conceding just 28, and they've done that against teams that have been beating other teams. I'm expecting more of the same.

Verdict – Dragons by 16

Result – Dragons 28 defeated Cowboys 22

Penrith Panthers vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Pepper Stadium

In round five the Storm beat the Panthers 28-6. In round six the Sharks beat the Storm in Melbourne 11-2. In round seven the Sharks face the Panthers, and the Panthers are the favourites. Granted the Panthers have most of their first grade squad returning on Sunday afternoon, but are we to assume they can just turn on a good performance like a tap? We haven't seen much of that thus far. The Panthers haven't beaten a good side yet this year and the Sharks are heading west with their best seventeen. To borrow a phrase from the great Phil Gould (before he starts borrowing some of mine) – what am I missing here?

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 28 defeated Panthers 2

Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Here's another game where I feel like the market has it wrong. The Eels have lost four games in a row and, to be frank, haven't looked like winning. The Tigers competed well against the Storm two weeks ago and then followed that up under the new coach with a surprise victory over the Cowboys in Townsville. Those two performances tell me the effort is there. Mitchell Moses gets to prove he is serious about putting in for the Tigers this season against his next club. Even if Tedesco and Woods are going somewhere else they'd want to show their next club how good they are. And given the neutral venue the Eels don't even get any home ground advantage. I'm wrong occasionally and I'll probably be wrong here too, but the Tigers for me in what is apparently an upset.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result – Eels 26 defeated Tigers 22

Wally Lewis - round seven selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BULLDOGS vs Rabbitohs
  • Knights vs ROOSTERS
  • BRONCOS vs Titans
  • Sea Eagles vs STORM

  • DRAGONS vs Cowboys

Hey everyone this is a late post but I am up.

I know he hates manly he has told us that over and over again that's fine I hate what's the matter parramatts but when he wants to offend my club and me he will cop it ok .

pabdul's picture

everyone knows im not keen on manly but lets face the facts your not gonna win the close ones with an overpaid
inconsistent half and a part time goalkicker. manly rely on 2 brothers
who i admit never

think your top 4 then u should change your stadium from lottoland to Disneyland.

Fortress's picture

Padpul once again disagree with u OK but your welcome to your opinion mate.before our loss to the drag queens we had everyone talking cherry evens is back in form and once more its a long season we will be there top 4 why not top 8 yes indeed.

We are every chance this relying on 2 brothers does not wash with me the team has many great players and the brothers are out of this world but padpul for me u sound like someone out of touch with my club and with our players your welcome to your opinion as always but sorry to say this I think ur comments could be levelled at most clubs why manly ?

The boys will be itching to get out there this weekend nothing better than a win over our arch enemy.

Punt high and follow on !!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

And "a" thankyou for your support mate hope all is well up there hope your boys beat the drag queens this weekend cut them back to size I have a feeling if jt is out they would want to prove they can win without him and forwards are starting to come back they can win.

Enjoy the day keep smiling!!!!

From the fortress where the eagles stand tall and proud in the true Anzac spirit!!!!!!!

a's picture

Mighty eagles vs storm clashes have been fierce a modern day arch rivalery this one will be s brutal clash as the mighty eagles will want to prove a point and bounce back thle 2008 grand final will long he rembered by eagles fans it was the day we completely and utterly smashed them 40-0 inba record murder it was the night the mighty sea eagles shone like never before magnificent.

My favourite paula Abdul song was oppisties attract hot lady great dancer sexy voice.

From the corso to the sea this is fortress comming loud and clear!!!!!!!!!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Hi Fortress
Very surprised to see Dragons beat your Eagles at their spiritual home.
Round 5 DCE was unbeatable, then those pesky fire breathers showed they are to be respected this year.
This week we have Eagles -v- Storm always a great contest and usually unpredictable.
Another great game this week is Panthers -v- Sharks. The black cats were oh so close last week with a few out, including Capt. Moylan.
This will be a ripper of a game. Just hope the Sharks keep it clean.
(sorry Sharks supporters but your team does push the limits.
C'mon Coach I'm trying to do your job. You do it much better than me so get back here.
Not forgetting my friend "Baggy" Eels at home -v- Tigers. Really who are you going to pick
All in all a great round coming up. My picks in Wednesday.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Look Mark its now in its third year, I am willing to lose 24 points a year but I will always back the BOYS to do the job. It is why we follow a club, we have our pride in what they do, we will them on as they fight for 80 minutes to be the best team in the comp and then as all of us say after a good season where we miss out on the GF prize, "we'll get them next year. The Eels are always my first and only choice and I'm more than happy to support them.

I don't know why there is so much "Baggy hates Manly supporters", I've met quite a few Manly supporters that I like, I like the fact that they are all EX Manly supporters.........................................

a's picture

Holy Shit Cowboys are without Thruston Scott Whistine Coote ONeil Grandville and Fenson

Come on Johnny Ray I'm trying to do your job and you do it better who do you think they can win

Fortress's picture

Baggy pants baggy pants u can't help yourself keep following ur mob of no hopers cause that's all they ever will be I don't give a rats if u like ex manly supporters neither any other mighty eagles supporters for some unknown reason I just don't like you OK so stuff off talk bout footy baggy pants and leave my club alone jelousy is killing you softly with Paula Abdul's song.

Now back to the land of the living yes mark a great match at brookie comming up I feel the mighty eagles will want to prove a point very important game the game bettwen what's the matter and tiger frollic well quite frankly I would rather a night out at the bingo down here at the RSL club ho hum drum a drum, have a good one Mr ashford .

Big Pete how are ya mate don't worry I'm holding the fort buddy.

Cheers from fortress !!!!¡

Bulldogs by 6
Roosters by 20
Broncos by 16
Storms by 8
Warriors by 2
Dragons by 18
Sharks by 4
Eels by 2

Go the mighty bulldogs...!

The Thinker's picture

Taka,

I don't believe I responded to a question you posed earlier about joining the tipping competition. While I can't slot you in this season, I'm happy to include you next year and beyond if you want to stay involved, and by all means keep adding your tips and comments this year.

All the best

pabdul's picture

just reading some comments and the word inappropriate is used quite often.
everyone's different to what they regard
as inappropriate. i guess if you give it you got to take it.
i actually find the word inappropriate
inappropriate on a site like this. are u all over 18 do you all have a tv well then
you've heard worse.

pabdul's picture

why do i use the name pabdul?
i was drunk in a sleazy disco when i first laid eyes on the wife she was a ringer for paula abdul to the point we went to movie world and a group of school kids asked her for autograph i said why not it will make their day so she signed pabdul coz there was about 30 of them. one little smart arse said if your paula abdul why are you with that dickhead i accidentally elbowed him in the back of the head.its been her nickname for 30yrs.

Taka's picture

Thank you The Thinker for your response.

Well I am still going to add my comments and tips for this season, and I'm excited that I'll be included in the tipping competition next year.

Thank you once again.

a's picture

Why did you delete my comment for Thinker I was just explaining what I think was inappropriate for the site

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Rabbitohs by 2- The Rabbitohs will be just too good for the Bulldogs here on Good Friday and come away with the chocolates.

Roosters by 8- Roosters too good here. Knights to play with plenty of spirit though but will come out short yet again.

Broncos by 14- Broncos to win although Hunt's out. I think that Nikorima will play a very good game with Milford steering the side. Titans are also in bad form.

Storm by 10- Storm will be too good for Manly here and will bounce back with a win.

Raiders by 20- Raiders to smash the Warriors here to continue form here. Whilst the Warriors' good form will be over.

The mighty Dragons by 12- The mighty Dragons to get the win over a heavily injury-effected Cowboys side to continue on our magnificent form.

Panthers by 4- Panthers to send a message by bouncing back in a thrilling contest against the Sharks.

Finally... Eels by 8- I think that the Easter Monday clash between the Eels and the Tigers will go the way of the Eels here in which will be a cracking game.

Awesome. Good luck with everyone's teams this week and with everyone's tips this week. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Thinker's picture

a,

You dropped the 'f' bomb. Even the great Tommy Raudonikis wouldn't get away with that.

a's picture

Sorry about that Thinker I didn't know about the F Bomb rule all the best

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hello Mr Thinker, out of interest and a bit of trivia.....last year in October a judge in Australia ruled the 'F' word was no longer deemed offensive in a case involving protesters that used used some colourful language. One of the comparisons was the term.... 'You F'n beauty'. In saying that, I don't like hearing or reading it.... for goodness sake is a better expression me thinks. Cheers from Mr Awesome.

a's picture

Very interesting Mr Awesome

The Thinker's picture

Yeah I realise it's a word that's hard to avoid. If you can get through 80 minutes of an NRL game at the ground with your kids without hearing it you must have gone to ANZ stadium on a Thursday night and you're sitting in the stand behind the goals in the rain.

Lots of kids read this site for their tipping competitions with their mates. Now I realise they are probably swearing all the time, but I got a lovely email from a Mum once thanking me that this website wasn't full of crazy internet types swearing and abusing each other.

I'm not sure if she's still a fan these days.

a's picture

Yeah its not hard to avoid it you can even hear it during games

mark ashford's picture

Yeah I'm a fan of the no swearing brigade.
I do swear but only on Fraser Island or in the pub in the company of other blokes.
In 2017 I'm sure plenty of women swear but also respect us blokes who don't swear in front of them. It's a respect thing.
If you have an absolute need to swear wherever you are then perhaps you need to consult a dictionary for more expressive words. Your mates will be impressed, but they may not understand you.

mark ashford's picture

Padbul,
The explanation of your name is classic.
Hope you two are still together.
And that little wanker still has a bump on his head.

a's picture

Yeah everyone swears sometime in life somewhere would it be okay if you consered the word

Steve Kerle's picture

Bulldogs 4
Roosters 8
Broncos 14
Storm 6
Raiders 10
Dragons 8
Sharks 22
Eels 2

Fortress's picture

Good evening all u footy lovers here are my tips for round 7.

The mighty eagles:!!!!!
The modern era's greatest and fierced rivalry the mighty eagles will want to prove a point after last week and what better way than to beat the arch enemy a great game in store come on boys rip into em!!!!!!!

Cowboys!!!!!!
Yes the dragon Queen's are favourites but I have a hunch that there winning streak may come to an end here the cows will have nothing to lose and this could be where the drags go for a slide.

Sharks!!!!!
Tough win last round and they look like they may have a liittle too much for the choclate soilders .

Bulldogs!!!!!
They look like they have turned the corner should be too strong here for the bunnies.

Broncos!!!!!!
I can see a carve up here even without hunt smashed the roosters the titans will be the next to suffer.

Warriors!!!!!
Going the upset they smashed what's the matter last week the raiders were also carving up last week tough at home but I'm going the upset in a tight battle

Roosters!!!!

Poor Newcastle trying hard but they will find the chooks a little too much to handle a one sided affair for mine!!!!!!

Tiger frollics!!!!!

This is my dud game of the round could not care less who wins but if pushed to choose than I'll go the tigers because I despise what's the matter parramatta eeeeeewwwww!!!!!!!!

Well there are my tips for this round hope ur all having a great night and as the fortress always says !!!!!!!

Go the mighty sea eaglesssssssssssssssssssssss

Johnny Awesome's picture

Yes Mr Thinker,
Totally agree with you there. The absence of swearing is a huge positive and got me interested as well. Ive gotta hand it to you, you do have the patience of Job from the Old Testament running the site. Cheers from Mr Awesome

Johnny Awesome's picture

Finally, the NRL has stepped in with sin bins for slapping from this round. It wasn't a good look and pretty gutless me thinks. The question is what will the players think of next? Cheers from Mr Awesome

a's picture

Well Thinker what your mum was proud of well I think she wouldn't be happy because a bit of that going on

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Fortress - u r holding The Fort well mate.
Got the laser job done to eye, things have been a bit blurry since but I'm managing to see things in clearer volumes. Still have the torn retina and flashes. Back to work tomorrow for the day, so I'll see how the real bright lights (and bright sparks) affect me.

@Mark A - enjoy the white/reds (not Drags but drinks).
I had a couple of Coopers pale Ales on tap tonight where we went for dinner with the wife's work. Verryyyyy nice drop there mate.

@Fortress and Mark A - might see a surprise packet at Brooky this week. Judge wisely with your Round 7 Tipping.

@Christine - hope u r ok and hope you all have a nice Easter along with the other bloggers/tipsters we have looking in on occasions.

Cheers from Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Good on you Taka - stay with the weekly tips and then you'll migrate across next season. I was in the same boat last year, just like Dragons Fan Boy, although he's had more stage names that Clint Eastwood.

Cheers - Big Pete Bx

sharks
raiders
storm
Have a happy easter everyone & may we all be blessed with more even more nrl ...

tigerholic's picture

Christine

You have picked the mighty tigers:), wish I was game enough:(

Baggy_Gee's picture

Glad you laid the little turd out Pabdul. It's always great to hear how nicknames are gotten. Mine is from a drinking song as we travelled around in reggis. Should be a good round this Easter as most of the tradition rivially teams are well matched, except for the Storm - Manly. Can't believe that there has only been one shining light in their 70 year history and that came after beating the Storm once. You'd think they would have had a few more happy moments, mind you first year in the comp they were second last. Cellar dwellers from the beginning I guess.

christine's picture

Tigerholic Were is the faith after last weeks effort I kind of have to I can see them doing back to back wins here ...

christine's picture

Tigerholic I'm on 31 points & I've taken a couple of upsets this week so it could go against me but it might go in my favour who knows ...

mark ashford's picture

Tiger, a couple of us have picked your boys.
OK there is some re-signing problems but if you were hoping for a contract elsewhere wouldn't you play your arse off.
I've never been a Woods fan, he can be very lazy at times, so piss him off and get a big forward who wants to play for his club.
I know Jason (coach) is gone so why are the troops still wanting to leave. I believe Cleary is a better coach than Taylor.
Let the deserters go and use the money to sign a couple of guys who love the tigers.
Your club has some problems, some say it's the board, but get it fixed don't go down the same road as the Eels

mark ashford's picture

COACH, where the hell are you?
Have you become a coward?
Not feeling brave enough to comment?
Tired of defending your Panthers?
We both got censured by Thinker
I'm back, are you still sooking?
You're better than that Coach.
