Round seven selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Note the 4pm kick-off on Good Friday folks – this game has a habit of sneaking up on me (and starting without me...rude). Both sides head into this game off the back of last round victories, although the strength of the opposition is questionable in both cases. In some ways these two clubs have similar issues – both have big forward packs but lack the creative playmakers to capitalise. Adam Reynolds has a very reliable kicking game but it's almost too reliable – there's not a lot of X factor in his play. While they got the win against an under-strength Panthers they only just got there. All too often they seemed hellbent on going around the Panthers. Now perhaps they were playing to a game plan, and they did win, but a repeat of that style is just too predictable to get past the Bulldogs. Cody Walker though, did show some flourishes so perhaps the Bunnies have a work in progress there. Having criticised the team in the red and the green the Bulldogs attack doesn't have me salivating either. All the interest (for me) lies in the battle of the forwards. The winner on that front wins the game, and I do lke that Bulldogs engine room. The other Reynolds (Josh) to score the match-winner.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 6

Result – Bulldogs 24 defeated Rabbitohs 9

Newcastle Knights vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Knights continue to compete but winning seems a bridge too far. Their only win this year was against the Titans when just about everything went wrong for their opponent. Plenty went wrong for the Chooks in round five – their defence was barely there against the Broncos, but you would expect their coaching staff to focus us on that in the lead up to this clash. There's certainly nothing wrong with the Roosters attack, so that should click into gear at some point during the 80 minutes. My gut feel – a low scoring first half and the tricolours class with the ball to shine brightly in the last quarter of the game.

Verdict – Roosters by 14

Result – Roosters 24 defeated Knights 6

Brisbane Broncos vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

I'm having one bet this weekend, and it's a slightly unusual one – I'm backing the Titans with a 16.5 point start at $1.53. While I expect the Broncos to prevail I've a sneaky feeling the Titans are going to pull a competitive effort out of their collective rear ends on Good Friday. Peats and McQueen are back for the Titans, and there's a few ex-Broncos in that Titans line-up (Taylor, Copley and Wallace) who will give their all. The Broncos are without Ben Hunt, and I'm not entirely convinced that the Broncos playmaking duo of Milford and Nikorima will work. I have to go with the Broncos on class alone, but don't let me talk you out of tipping an upset here.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos 24 defeated Titans 22

Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

Unfortunately for the Sea Eagles the Storm don't lose two games in a row very often. The last time that happened was in 2015 in rounds 14 and 15 during the Origin period of the season. Note that Munster and Bromwich (Jesse) have been named on an extended bench but it would be a surprise if either are playing this weekend. The Storm played in atrocious conditions in their round five loss and if there's one team you don't want to face in the wet it's the Sharks. They'll be back near their best this weekend. The Sea Eagles were surprisingly awful against the Dragons. Let's hope that was a one-off rather than an indication of where their season is heading. Both sides take to this game with under-strength forward packs but Bellamy will give the purple forwards a simple game plan and the best brains in the business will win the game from there..

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 30 defeated Sea Eagles 26

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

While most of the teams I had pencilled in for greatness in 2017 are letting me down, the Raiders are starting to look like the side we all hoped they could be. Competitive losses against the better sides and dominant victories over the poorer sides sees them sitting on the cusp of the top four. Meanwhile the Warriors are on the cusp of the top eight after successive victories at Mt Smart. Their challenge now, as it always has been, is to win a game in Australia. They haven't done that in season 2017 thus far, and I'm not enthused about them breaking their duck in Canberra.

Verdict – Raiders by 10

Result – Raiders 20 defeated Warriors 8

St George Illawarra Dragons vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – WIN Stadium

Few if any would have thought the Dragons would be on the top of the NRL ladder at any point this season. Five wins from six starts and a very healthy points differential – this is a side that is putting opponents to the sword. To think their coach was expected to come under a ton of scrutiny this season but the critics have put their mouths in their pockets for now. There's no reason to doubt them this weekend either – playing at home against a team without their co-captains and their first-choice fullback and hooker. It's hard to measure how much Thurston is worth to the fortunes of the Cowboys but the short answer is 'heaps'. The Dragons have racked up 89 points in the last three rounds while conceding just 28, and they've done that against teams that have been beating other teams. I'm expecting more of the same.

Verdict – Dragons by 16

Result – Dragons 28 defeated Cowboys 22

Penrith Panthers vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Pepper Stadium

In round five the Storm beat the Panthers 28-6. In round six the Sharks beat the Storm in Melbourne 11-2. In round seven the Sharks face the Panthers, and the Panthers are the favourites. Granted the Panthers have most of their first grade squad returning on Sunday afternoon, but are we to assume they can just turn on a good performance like a tap? We haven't seen much of that thus far. The Panthers haven't beaten a good side yet this year and the Sharks are heading west with their best seventeen. To borrow a phrase from the great Phil Gould (before he starts borrowing some of mine) – what am I missing here?

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 28 defeated Panthers 2

Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Here's another game where I feel like the market has it wrong. The Eels have lost four games in a row and, to be frank, haven't looked like winning. The Tigers competed well against the Storm two weeks ago and then followed that up under the new coach with a surprise victory over the Cowboys in Townsville. Those two performances tell me the effort is there. Mitchell Moses gets to prove he is serious about putting in for the Tigers this season against his next club. Even if Tedesco and Woods are going somewhere else they'd want to show their next club how good they are. And given the neutral venue the Eels don't even get any home ground advantage. I'm wrong occasionally and I'll probably be wrong here too, but the Tigers for me in what is apparently an upset.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result – Eels 26 defeated Tigers 22

Wally Lewis - round seven selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BULLDOGS vs Rabbitohs
  • Knights vs ROOSTERS
  • BRONCOS vs Titans
  • Sea Eagles vs STORM
  • RAIDERS vs Warriors
  • DRAGONS vs Cowboys
  • PANTHERS vs Sharks
  • EELS vs Tigers

Thanks Christine - much appreciate your thoughts.
They gave too much start, to want to play catch up footy.
A good sign that they can do it, when they give it their all.
Those first three early tries reminded me of Rocky 1 movie, when Apollo Creed was belting the pee and pick-handles out of Rocky.
Manly were on the canvas and got up to nearly.......but failed at the final hurdle.
Near enough isn't good enough......especially when you need points to make the Final 8.

Have a nice Easter Day Christine and I hope The Bunny passed by your place this morning.

pabdul's picture

big pete i know we look for positives when we lose and u almost pulled it off. but if your first half wasn't so bad you would need to comeback. can fortresses be made of straw?
happy easter champ

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Fortress - I look forward to that and a nice fish, chips and salad lunch on The Corso. Wife/partners/family included - if you like.
I'm a rather friendly Country Hick you know. Others should have seen that by now.

Just remember though, there are time I will throw in the occasional other footy codes chat......not too often though as I don't want to ruin my friendship here. In FOX Sport EPL Tipping I am now coming overall 35 in Fox Sports and 10th in NSW. Have my joker to use in one of today's UK matches. Man Utd v Chelsea might be draw as Man Utd have Europa Cup match this coming week to play.

Got The Bathurst 6 Hour Car Race on here this weekend. Lot of visitors about, but nothing like Bathurst 1000 V8's or 12 Hour Classic.

6 Hour is good for up and comers to test their skills and possibly even get a call up from a major team to drive in other events. I can hear the races from my backyard, like they are driving up the street, as we live about 1.2km's from the tracks front gate entrance.

Cheers Fortress and a Happy Easter Sunday to you and yours.
Big Pete Bx - West of The Sandstone Curtain and Great Divide.

Good Easter Morning to you Awesome J.
Its true what real workers do, to make something a success.
I know several that follow this site and they don't even comment or tip. They are watching us!!!!!

So Mr Awesome, may I ask where in the neighborhood that I reside, did you once hibernate at. U r I take these days in Canberra are you not.

Keep well and enjoy our journey here.

christine's picture

Even though they lost I think titans did well against broncos & now I need sharks to beat Penrith ...

BigPeteBx's picture

I think Christine, that Mark A is getting over the shock of Coach being red carded.
Maybe Mark has also gone fishing, according to The Gospel of St Mark.

He might be getting some holy water ready for this afternoon, to be able to sit back and relax.
Being a water boy, he might just have some thoughts on The Sharks at Pepper. Peppered Panthers a la Shark.
Keep well and enjoy your day

BigPeteBx's picture

Pabdul - I think if we were much closer, in the early stages, we wouldn't need to come back. It is, what it is mate.

Fortresses can't be made of straw, as they would topple too easily.
We are much stronger and stronger we will be together.
We can supply all the straw you chooks need, to nest in.
Have a happy clucky Easter and enjoy your eggs mate.

You've got The Drags next round, but on Anzac Day.
If you can douse the Dragons fire, you might both be on same comp points. Otherwise, it might be bbq chook at the wake.

pabdul's picture

good call
but whats weaker than straw?
hope u get back in the 8 soon
happy easter to tin shead and 2metre peter.

pabdul's picture

sorry tin shed*

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Pabdul or is it Full of Bull PadBull.
I walk tall.

When Fortress spoke of greatest rivalry. I would rate Storm/Manly matches second to Parra/Manly rivalry.....there is just that feeling in the air and it goes back many years.

Easter Cheers from Bx

pabdul's picture

i agree with manly parra first
but if you're a chook bbq or not its roosters v souths.
actual games with recently remarkable comebacks

a's picture

Both Manly and Cowboys lost in slimar style

christine's picture

Big pete bx I think your right mark would be fishing he wouldn't be to concerned about coach being disqualified & not just red carded but as the Thinker said coach did bring it on himself on many occasions & yet I feel even mentioning coaches name probably makes him feel important like he has left a lasting residual memory of himself behind that lingers on forever like an evil spirit would .

mark ashford's picture

Hi All
Sorry I've been absent. Been at my brothers for two days organizing the "Mother Of All Garage Sales" Maybe we should just hire a jumbo jet and drop it on North Korea.
Personally, even though we had many stouches, I'm sorry to see Coach go. I did try to moderate him but to no avail (not my job anyway)
I didn't realise Thinker had many requests to censure him but in the end it's Thinkers site. So good bye and good luck.
So folks we now have to come up with our own extra comps etc. If we want them.
There's too many people on this site to wish "happy Easter" individually, just keep yourselves safe and don't eat too many chockies.
Thinker "tight lines" and enjoy your holiday.
TV has just told me Sharks have flogged the Panthers...maybe just as well Coach is not here.

a's picture

Yeah Mark I think Coach should have never picked on Christine so I am glad to see that as for the extra comps I think I am capable of running on after all I have a good idea for the comp I was going to wait to after Coaches Comp but do you want me to reveal after tomorrow

Fortress's picture

Thanks big Pete looking forward tpbit as well Buddy eagles vs what's the matter goes back years the new big rivalry is the eagles vs storm both dominate of the past 15 years
Padpul we are made of iron tough strong unbreakable that's the mighty eagles straws and birdseeds are of the chooks variety enjoy ur easter padbul hope ur straws keep you safe.

The black cats got smashed just like there vanquished spud head haaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaa.

Hope everyone is having a great easter what's up doc!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pabdul's picture

up here in the top 4 its great how's the weather outside the top 8.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Gee Cronulla are looking like the real deal again, two impressive weeks. Also my Dragons are motoring. Most teams take their foot off the pedal when in front. Once the Dragons keep it to the floor they will be premiership contenders. Can't forget the Raiders gee they are tough. Cheers from Mr Awesome

mark ashford's picture

"a" If you think you have something we would all like to participate in then post it mate.
It's fun to have an extra apart from Thinkers normal comp and his 8/8 comp.
If it's a fun thing, that works I'll put up a little prize.

mark ashford's picture

Johnny Awesome....don't worry about your dragons mate they are the real deal.

a's picture

Thanks Mark I will post it as soon as the round is finish

mark ashford's picture

Last comment.
Seems anyone can be beaten.
Penrith, off season favourites for the crown, struggling.
Storm beaten in Melbourne last week.
Broncos just getting over the line.
Sharkies going well
Roosters, Raiders & Dragons, sneaking home.
Eels & Tiges to go.
2017 shaping up to be maybe the best season ever.
Don't you love Rugby League!!!

pabdul's picture

its good to see the dragons on top for a change but look at your next 3 rounds and if your on top after that well I'll be shocked

christine's picture

Mark I wonder how far raiders will go this year they are playing well & as you know I 'm not sorry to see coach go after all the garbage I put up with from him & you know yourself it wasn't just banter & on top of that we loose johnny ray again because of coach so we need to get johnny ray , joker, chooks , guru craig, & the guy coach accused of being racist back & all the other people the thinker says he's lost because of coach , So Thinker or TLH please try to contact all of them & get them back now coach has gone & i'm currently 7 / 7 so far this week just sweating on tigers getting up now ...

Fortress's picture

Padbul don't forget we beat your chooks its nice to hide behind a defeat I suppose the pain becomes a lot less to handle do you remember the story of the 3 little pigs well they love a straw house and they do puff and puff and blow houses down just like we blew your chooks down bom bom.

I'm going to turn around once and we do the eagle rock!!!!!!!!!!

a's picture

Yeah we need to get Chooks Johnny Ray Guru Craig Joker and that guy who Coach called racist back as for the rest of you happy Easter I will be back with my competition tomorrow I can't wait to share it with you

pabdul's picture

sorry mate i was watching the 2013 grand final.
boom boom

christine's picture

"a" Look forward to see what you come up with for your comp ...

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes "a" and I know what u r getting at with losing in similar style mate.
Signs of a good team to come back and fight back strong.

Keep well mate and I hope you guys in Qld are having a nice fishy Easter. I will quote thought that tomatoes down this way aren't too bad price wise for now. I got some nice trellis ones for $3.40 a kilo on Saturday. I love them - The Italian Love Apple, but I'm not italian in any way. I knew some nice ones though. Idolised Sophia Loren in her day.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Miss Christine, I do agree with what you quoted about the departing Coach Spud. I did however, Liked his facts on stats and wherever he pulled them from. Didn't hand out too much credit where it was due.
But he was part of us, apart from his directives and landslide views and pin-pointing individuals.

You keep well my friend, the evil spirit will soon depart, it can linger for a wile there, like a ghost comes back to check in. I doubt that will happen tonight, after the Sharks ripped Panthers hearts out, this afternoon,
He'd be still be about watching, but not posting. I wont be convinced his access has been deleted, until Thinker states so.

Cheers Missy - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Comrade Fortress - Manly/Parra goes back to before NRL days.
I won't get on too much about that, as others will see the chance to have their Take 2, on what they've said to me in prior days. My memory tries not to fail me.

The Corso, or wherever will take place, I guarantee it. I know a family that are mad West Tigers supporters/fans who were in my area and we met up, had lunch and couple of nice beers together.
I took them on a history drive of the Oldest Inland City of Australia and they really enjoyed what I gave them in the full course of.
Even some Ben Hall bush-ranging thrown in.
Actually one of my cousins sons and also her brother in law, played for West Magpies in their day. Big Bruce Gibbs came from the same Group 10 club. Yes Doggie, I know u r reading along with what we once discussed.

BigPeteBx's picture

Early days Pabdul - early days!!!!
You Roosters love crowing early, don't you.
But then, I guess that's your nature isn't it.
4am on the roof - Cockle Doodle Do

Enjoy your week.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Mark A - again, I say that teams are very unpredictable.
We'll see how it all comes together around Round 20 and who needs to really pull the finger out and who should have made sure of the early round losses.

Hope all is ok and u r enjoying your Easter, apart from heavy labouring with big mother of garage sales

Tailspin's picture

Well Thinker, you were right about the Panthers, might have to listen to you a bit more, I thought the Sharks might have been a bit worn out with last weeks clash with the Storm and the Panthers would have been a lot fresher with all their players returning, how wrong was I. Hope the fishing went well, how good is fresh fish? Oh well, I'm still looking for the perfect round but not this week. How good were the Cowboys in the second half a? Looks promising for the future. A few good come backs this week in the second half, but letting the first half slip away and not catching up. Anyway, hope you all had a great Easter and had heaps of chocky's and a few ales. Go the Eels for a win on Monday, they need it bad.
Cheers from the Tailspin who is having a few ales, ye ha.

BigPeteBx's picture

Hmmmmm..........speaking Pabdul of next three rounds. It will be surprising if Dragons are still league leaders then. Chooks don't have it that bad.

christine's picture

If anyone wants the job of doing the stats by all means do so because the Thinker or TLH may not have time & if the Thinker or TLH want the job i'm sure they will speak up ...

BigPeteBx's picture

Not too bad outside the 8 Pabdul - just waiting for a few to fall.

Fortress in a little r&r and getting the lowdown on Canberra weather. Will be a bloody tight game if it is freezin cold down there for the 6pm match. Manly used to brass monkey weather at the beach in Winter.

Cheers Champion Royal Easter Show Cock Rooster - enjoy your Monday.

BigPeteBx's picture

Stats not an issue Christine, as they were a thing that was just thrown up in topics. But I only re-quoted what I had previously said due to the amount be were loaded with. The person even loaded us some Olympic Games facts as well. Nice at the time. Past tense now.
Gold Coast C/wealth Games along with Paralympics to look forward to now.
You might like to write this down, that Kurt Fearnley Paralympics Wheelchair Marathon comes from near me. He is a fair dinkum Aussie and inspiration.

pabdul's picture

yeah manlys next 3 isnt easy first u gotta shut down bj and rapana then you need to shutdown the burgesses u know the toothbrush was invented in redfern otherwise it would be called a teethbrush. then you need to shutdown jimmy the jet at suncorp.
good luck with that
2 metre.

a's picture

I think we all could do a little job with the stats I can Do a bit here

The Thinker's picture

For those wondering about our old friend Coach Potato I've had a bit of a chat with him via email...so let me set a few things straight (for the record).

I haven't banned him, but he did say he was leaving for good, so I said goodbye. As I said at some point earlier whether he wants to return or not is up to him.

He's taking a break from this site for a while. He may choose to come back and he may not. As I said...it's up to him.

His Last One on the Couch competition continues in his absence. To give Coach some credit he has stumped up the $25 he offered as prizemoney. I've matched that myself and I believe a few others have chipped in. We still have two players left...the battle continues.

I said that Coach didn't apologize to Smiley Guy for calling him a racist. I was wrong and that isn't fair of me. Coach definitely called him a racist (unfairly), but Coach did apologize after I pointed out that he was being a bl00dy tool.

Coach can't even remember what he said to Chooks, but it's all still here if anyone wants to read it.

The rules of this website aren't set in stone but here's a quick rundown:

* You can swear...a little bit, but if I choose to censor your language that's my choice. The two big swear words (and I don't think I need to spell them out for you) are the ones I won't be letting through.

* You can rant and rave about your team, another team, a refereeing decision, the state of the game or the channel nine commentary team. But once your comments are directed at another contributor on this site you are on thin ice. Here is an example to give you an idea:

A. "Thinker your team are terrible. They suck this year."  (This is okay)

B. "Thinker your team are terrible. You must be a dickhead if you like them." (This is not okay)

* Any sweeping generalisations about someone based on their race, ethnicity or gender will be removed. Here is an example to give you an idea:

A. "Gee that Ben Hunt played terribly tonight." (This is okay)

B. "Gee that Ben Hunt played terribly tonight...typical lazy white heterosexual male dickhead" (This is not okay)

Beyond that it's common sense. Treat everyone with a bit of respect and just have fun. It's just a football tipping website after all. 99% of the time you're getting it right.

Thanks for (mostly) getting it right.

All the best

pabdul's picture

i always wanted to say that about ben hunt but didnt want to get barred. thanks thinker

BigPeteBx's picture

Good evening Johnny Awesome.
I take it u don't wish to respond to a previous reply post I sent to you, earlier today.
No probs, understand with yr privacy and location. Cold lines, cold hands, cold weather - Hot Dragons.
The next three rounds will be a big test to yours from Kogarah.
Cheers and enjoy yr week mate.

Pabdul - never fear, we were once unbeatable at Brooky.
When Lottoland injection of cash is seen, you will see a casino type stadium there mate.
Much needed in the area, like many others that require a few mods/refurbs.

Glad you like me for something Pabdul - Paula and you can have a singalong, and it goes like this:
"On the Road again.......gotta gotta get on the road again, coz I'm singing along with good Manly friend.....gotta gotta get on the road again".

Cheers mate - speak tomorrow. Sleep easy with your guitar, Guitarzan and his jungle band.
