Round seven selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Note the 4pm kick-off on Good Friday folks – this game has a habit of sneaking up on me (and starting without me...rude). Both sides head into this game off the back of last round victories, although the strength of the opposition is questionable in both cases. In some ways these two clubs have similar issues – both have big forward packs but lack the creative playmakers to capitalise. Adam Reynolds has a very reliable kicking game but it's almost too reliable – there's not a lot of X factor in his play. While they got the win against an under-strength Panthers they only just got there. All too often they seemed hellbent on going around the Panthers. Now perhaps they were playing to a game plan, and they did win, but a repeat of that style is just too predictable to get past the Bulldogs. Cody Walker though, did show some flourishes so perhaps the Bunnies have a work in progress there. Having criticised the team in the red and the green the Bulldogs attack doesn't have me salivating either. All the interest (for me) lies in the battle of the forwards. The winner on that front wins the game, and I do lke that Bulldogs engine room. The other Reynolds (Josh) to score the match-winner.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 6

Result – Bulldogs 24 defeated Rabbitohs 9

Newcastle Knights vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Knights continue to compete but winning seems a bridge too far. Their only win this year was against the Titans when just about everything went wrong for their opponent. Plenty went wrong for the Chooks in round five – their defence was barely there against the Broncos, but you would expect their coaching staff to focus us on that in the lead up to this clash. There's certainly nothing wrong with the Roosters attack, so that should click into gear at some point during the 80 minutes. My gut feel – a low scoring first half and the tricolours class with the ball to shine brightly in the last quarter of the game.

Verdict – Roosters by 14

Result – Roosters 24 defeated Knights 6

Brisbane Broncos vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

I'm having one bet this weekend, and it's a slightly unusual one – I'm backing the Titans with a 16.5 point start at $1.53. While I expect the Broncos to prevail I've a sneaky feeling the Titans are going to pull a competitive effort out of their collective rear ends on Good Friday. Peats and McQueen are back for the Titans, and there's a few ex-Broncos in that Titans line-up (Taylor, Copley and Wallace) who will give their all. The Broncos are without Ben Hunt, and I'm not entirely convinced that the Broncos playmaking duo of Milford and Nikorima will work. I have to go with the Broncos on class alone, but don't let me talk you out of tipping an upset here.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos 24 defeated Titans 22

Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

Unfortunately for the Sea Eagles the Storm don't lose two games in a row very often. The last time that happened was in 2015 in rounds 14 and 15 during the Origin period of the season. Note that Munster and Bromwich (Jesse) have been named on an extended bench but it would be a surprise if either are playing this weekend. The Storm played in atrocious conditions in their round five loss and if there's one team you don't want to face in the wet it's the Sharks. They'll be back near their best this weekend. The Sea Eagles were surprisingly awful against the Dragons. Let's hope that was a one-off rather than an indication of where their season is heading. Both sides take to this game with under-strength forward packs but Bellamy will give the purple forwards a simple game plan and the best brains in the business will win the game from there..

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 30 defeated Sea Eagles 26

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

While most of the teams I had pencilled in for greatness in 2017 are letting me down, the Raiders are starting to look like the side we all hoped they could be. Competitive losses against the better sides and dominant victories over the poorer sides sees them sitting on the cusp of the top four. Meanwhile the Warriors are on the cusp of the top eight after successive victories at Mt Smart. Their challenge now, as it always has been, is to win a game in Australia. They haven't done that in season 2017 thus far, and I'm not enthused about them breaking their duck in Canberra.

Verdict – Raiders by 10

Result – Raiders 20 defeated Warriors 8

St George Illawarra Dragons vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – WIN Stadium

Few if any would have thought the Dragons would be on the top of the NRL ladder at any point this season. Five wins from six starts and a very healthy points differential – this is a side that is putting opponents to the sword. To think their coach was expected to come under a ton of scrutiny this season but the critics have put their mouths in their pockets for now. There's no reason to doubt them this weekend either – playing at home against a team without their co-captains and their first-choice fullback and hooker. It's hard to measure how much Thurston is worth to the fortunes of the Cowboys but the short answer is 'heaps'. The Dragons have racked up 89 points in the last three rounds while conceding just 28, and they've done that against teams that have been beating other teams. I'm expecting more of the same.

Verdict – Dragons by 16

Result – Dragons 28 defeated Cowboys 22

Penrith Panthers vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Pepper Stadium

In round five the Storm beat the Panthers 28-6. In round six the Sharks beat the Storm in Melbourne 11-2. In round seven the Sharks face the Panthers, and the Panthers are the favourites. Granted the Panthers have most of their first grade squad returning on Sunday afternoon, but are we to assume they can just turn on a good performance like a tap? We haven't seen much of that thus far. The Panthers haven't beaten a good side yet this year and the Sharks are heading west with their best seventeen. To borrow a phrase from the great Phil Gould (before he starts borrowing some of mine) – what am I missing here?

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 28 defeated Panthers 2

Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Here's another game where I feel like the market has it wrong. The Eels have lost four games in a row and, to be frank, haven't looked like winning. The Tigers competed well against the Storm two weeks ago and then followed that up under the new coach with a surprise victory over the Cowboys in Townsville. Those two performances tell me the effort is there. Mitchell Moses gets to prove he is serious about putting in for the Tigers this season against his next club. Even if Tedesco and Woods are going somewhere else they'd want to show their next club how good they are. And given the neutral venue the Eels don't even get any home ground advantage. I'm wrong occasionally and I'll probably be wrong here too, but the Tigers for me in what is apparently an upset.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result – Eels 26 defeated Tigers 22

Wally Lewis - round seven selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BULLDOGS vs Rabbitohs
  • Knights vs ROOSTERS
  • BRONCOS vs Titans
  • Sea Eagles vs STORM
  • RAIDERS vs Warriors
  • DRAGONS vs Cowboys
  • PANTHERS vs Sharks
  • EELS vs Tigers

Sorry Mr Big Pete for not replying. earlier on, been as busy as a one eyed cat watching 6 mouse holes. Went down to Kandos to visit my folks. Caught up with an old mate I haven't seen since 1984 when we worked at the Kandos cement factory together. I was a fitter/machinist he was one of the best sheet metal wiorkers you'd come across. Just got back to Canberra today and I can't locate your comment, sorry mate. Can't believe Mr Big Pete that there is still a massive phone black spot from Bathurst to Kandos via Sofala. Fair dinkum, they probably only need two towers to cover the area. My Dad who is 85 has to take my Mum through there for Mums medical appointments and it's a worry mate about the lack of reception. I think Tim Shaw was saying that back when mobiles first came out and they were as proverbially as big as your local pub dog that coverage was better than today. I think my folks had cdma or something and had terrific coverage. It's really lacking now for the country folk, go figure. Catch up later Mr Big Pete

Johnny Awesome's picture

Just found your comment Big Pete, Valid points indeed. Nothing wrong with sitting on the fence regarding observers. I don't always have the time to comment, so I appreciate Mr Thinker and his helper for their hard work. I'm from Kandos, been there since I was a nipper. Did my apprenticeship at Kandos Cement, played footy in Mudgee. Started following the mighty St George Dragons in 1969. Moved to Canberra for work back in 85 and still not classified as a local ha. Don't really mind, I'm still country through day through anyway. How's that for a quick summary? How about you Big Pete?

Big Pete
I too am a Gina L fan (man she was something else)
Those movies when she went into the sea and got fully wet....better stop now.
Big Ray Stevens fan also, some of the funniest songs ever.
As for famous rivalries, being a Qlder we're a bit new to claim any, but they will come. There are some famous Brissy ones but you probably have never heard of the teams.
Mate one thing I gotta pull you up on is your song writing talent. Stick to being a Manly supporter!

mark ashford's picture

Padbul
Mate that comment about tooth/teethbrush is one of the funniest things I have read for ages (with all due respect to our Souths supporters)

mark ashford's picture

"a" why don't you run your comp by Thinker?
It's his call.

christine's picture

Finished on 7 / 7 so close yet so far away .

mark ashford's picture

Thinker
Thanks for the Coach explanation and the easy to follow rules.
Just a little common sense and we can all be happy.

Fortress's picture

What a pathetic game of football God help us,!!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Just saw final results Eels/Tigers
Stopped me getting 8/8 but congrats to Baggy and other Eels fans.
Have to try for the perfect round next week.

pabdul's picture

hey strawstress average game but they are both in the bottom 8.
oh sorry so is your team

tigerholic's picture

Fortress
Which team do you hate more, the Eels V Tigers game wasn't that bad a game, could of gone either way.

Well done to all of the Parra fans, as disappointing as it is to lose again, that winning feeling will return soon.

Have a good week folks

Fortress's picture

No tiger to be hounest don't hate your team the ref was pathetic the second last try to what's the matter was not a try the commentators said itvwas touched forward by one of there players what's the matter were off side all day what's the matter parrra were woefull cellar dewellers again

As for the tigers tiodesco and moses were brilliant your team should of won but once again what's the matter just like they paid off the players rorts paid off the ref u have to agree with me surely tiger .

Cheers from the fortress just telling itvas it is!!!!!!!!!

a's picture

Mark does that mean ask the Thinker

Baggy_Gee's picture

It was good Mark, been a lousy weekend up here, a win does the heart good, especially when its been the type of win we need to cultivate. Coming from behind after a fast start mean that we are starting to get it right, at least we are the western team with a win leading into next weeks bash with the Panthers. Lets see if they can string two together and make a better fist of the first third of the season than we have so far.

Fortress's picture

Paddul your only really half funny but now verbal diarrhoea.

I think your roof is leaking just like your team.

Cheers from the fortress where only eagles dare!!!!!!!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Round 19 should be a good round for you tigerholic,.

pabdul's picture

your right fortress i do talk crap.
i did hear at brookie against storm alot fans were jumping the fence. luckily security caught them and made them watch the rest of the game.

BigPeteBx's picture

Good evening Ponniah siva.
Stay with the Thinker site, keep visiting and even posting your tips in blogs. When the new/next season starts Thinker will issue an invite to those who are usually interested in joining. I was in the exact same position last year.

Who is your fave NRL team?

Cheers, keep well and enjoy the journey.

BigPeteBx's picture

Good evening there Johnny A. Nice catching up again.
Now that you mentioned it, I do recall posting a conversation with you last year, because once Kandos raised it's head, I remembered it all.
Telephone reception has been horrible for many. NBN is now being rolled out and my street just had the cables trenched and the green node cabinet installed last week.
Speaking of old mates from over that way. I did mention in my past posts about Craig Bellamy coming from Portland and I knew Mal Fitzgerald really well, when he was R/League Squad coach at WRAS (Academy Sport), as I was a board member for 11 years there.

I'll answer part B, from your post - coming next.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
After watching the Panthers game I don't think you'll have a problem.
Coach and the media told us the Panthers were favourites for the flag this year. Something has gone wrong.
When Griffiths took over the Broncs they slipped down the ladder.
Maybe he ain't the coach the club thinks he is.

mark ashford's picture

Fortress
Your love of Manly is to be admired.
Storm just pipped you mate on what is one of the great rivalries of the NRL.
Do they meet again this year?
Or will we be fighting over SOO? Surely some of your boys will be in the losing NSW team and maybe DCE will be in the winning QLD team.

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin Johnny A - again.
Yes, I think we all appreciate what Thinker &TLH do to keep this site secure and supported. I knew a Tony Toole from Kandos Cement.
He worked in the offices there and played 1st Grade Group 10 with Bathurst Railway RLFC. I worked in NSWGR for 34 years & NSW Education nearing 12 years. I knew quite a few general relief guys who worked the Mudgee line. I've done a bit of community work with committee's. Yes mate, good quick summary. We'll keep in touch. Another member of Thinker site "Doggie", came form the great Oberon area. He's been quiet for a while there and he might be caught up wrestling crocs in NT.
Hope you can teach those pollie whackers in Canberra some sense and about our Country and the ideals of being an Aussie.
You keep well mate and in touch - Big Pete

Rocket Ryan's picture

Maybe

mark ashford's picture

Rocket
You have been absent for a while.
What does "maybe" mean?

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin Mark - yes, Gina Lollo was an awesome package as well.
I knew a few clubs in Qld Comp.
Brothers, Dolphins Redcliffe, Wynnum-Manly, Ipswich, Roma????
I think one rivalry that started there, was with Greg Oliphant many years ago that started the boxing in ARL/NRL going.

Hahahahaha Mark - I only stole a couple of Willie's lines. Don't you like the Manly and friend bit, I threw in.
I'll push on Mr Businessman - have good week
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Mark A -
the way Penrith recruited and stocked the team, there was that early assurance that Panthers would be in the four and g/f faves.
Something has certainly gone wrong.
Griffin might be another quiet mouse in the sheds when addressing players.

Bennett has that similar image (not mouse) but gets across to his players. Doesn't yell or abuse them, just talks footy sense.
Well that's the picture I get of him.
Maybe there are probs out at the foot of the mountains with power and who drives it. Could be board room stuff like Manly had issues with in the past.

Cheers at Bribie mate

mark ashford's picture

Ha Ha
Big Pete Brisbane Wests produced Barry Muir and many other stars who had a great rivalry with Wynum Manly Wally Lewis, Greg Dowling
Artie Beetson and others.
All the great Bris players were offered big contracts by Sydney clubs and they went for the money that Bris couldn't afford.
Thank heavens a SOO competition evolved and we now stand with QLD being the overall champs.
It's now evened out with NSW just being pipped last year so come on you blues can you do it this year.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Well my current beef with the BOYS is adding Mitchell Moses, we have a great young half from QLD cup, what sort of message is that sending him. Could be the same issue with the Panthers. No one has the confidence that they are safe and assured in the Firsts.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Mark A - Storm play Manly in Round 21 at AAMI Park.
I see where the MAYBE from Rocket R points to Mark.

Oh! you and Pabdul are alike. Pabdul even admitted it a few weeks ago that he loves dishing it out.
But you Mark, do it a different way with a bit of diplomacy and niggling to boot.
Have a good week

BigPeteBx's picture

Mark A - with no State getting best bite of two matches, will make it better. Then I think West Aust will get a match in the next couple of seasons.
NSW will need to show and blend better than some of the players are presently showing for their clubs.

BTW - I also remember the name Mick Vievers from many years ago.
Slowly, others will come to mind. I met Gene Miles in Townsville, many years ago now at Sth Townsville RLFC Presentation Night at Townsville International Hotel.
Great night, as we were invited with some friends that followed the club and lived out Kirwan way then. That was also when I saw the last band concert of Spit Enz in Enz of an Era......now we're talking some moons ago mate.

Fortress's picture

Evening football fans,

I've updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp. Congratulations to Scott M. Lillychino, The Voyeur, Islander and Christine Bailey who all managed 8 from 8 this week (curse you Tigers grrrrr).

I'll have the round eight tipping page published as soon as I can. The first game in round eight isn't until Friday night, and we have two games on ANZAC Day on the Tuesday.

All the best

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin Fortress.
Going ok Brooky Comrade & Mighty Eagle.
Some interesting posts here over Easter break.
I'm just annoyed like many are with Tigers match today. Eels had the players to win, but I took Tigers to carry on from last week. When they set sail with a good lead and then dropped their bundle and slackened off, that was when the slipperies took control.

More annoyed how our blokes let Storm get 18 soft points up so early. I had a quick peek at NRL Live with the highlights. Good comeback, but not enough to get over the line. Return match is at AAMI Park in Round 21 - and we've won there before, in a close contest. It depends on what team turns up and where they are focused. However, next week at GIO in the capital.

Back to the grind tomorrow, but thankfully a short week.
You have a good week and prepare for ANZAC Day as Roosters and Dragons do battle and that will be a test of artillery.

Cheers - Big Pete

Hi Big Pete, Yep Craig Belamy came from Portland around 45 mins from Kandos and a stones throw to Lithgow. How about this for a bit of trivia to all, coming into Wallererang power station near Portland, the roads were all concrete when I used to drive it when I lived near there. In fact, the magority of road was concrete in Portland extending up to Lithgow and the Great Western Highway. Is there anywhere else anyone can remember both NSW or Qld where this has occurred. Maybe a little rate because the whole region was coal and cement. You had Kandos Cement Factory, Charbon Cement factory and Portland Cement Factory. Best cement in Australia was made in that area ( unbiased view of course ha ) Cheers from Mr Awesome.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi all, I've heard the last Cuty v Country game will be played in Mudgee. That's a perfect place to end a fine tradition dating back to 1928. In the old days it was a precursary to rep honours but in recent times it so. They already know who they will pick in the State of Origin barring injury. In the RL calendar they've got in this professional era, it's just too much injury risk now. Regardless I'm going to miss it, but I'm happy the last game is being played in genuine footy country. Big Pete and all, here's a plug. If anyone is going down for the game, stay at the Kandos Hotel/Motel, the owner is a mate of mine Ray and Julie, I reckon buses will run from Kandos to Mudgee for the game. If you want to drive to Mudgee it's only 45 mins cheers all from Mr Awesome

Hi Christine, congrates on 8/8 as your original choice with Eels still stood. I missed by that one in the work comp I take part in. Hope you had a great Easter and best of luck for the coming week.
