Round seven selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Note the 4pm kick-off on Good Friday folks – this game has a habit of sneaking up on me (and starting without me...rude). Both sides head into this game off the back of last round victories, although the strength of the opposition is questionable in both cases. In some ways these two clubs have similar issues – both have big forward packs but lack the creative playmakers to capitalise. Adam Reynolds has a very reliable kicking game but it's almost too reliable – there's not a lot of X factor in his play. While they got the win against an under-strength Panthers they only just got there. All too often they seemed hellbent on going around the Panthers. Now perhaps they were playing to a game plan, and they did win, but a repeat of that style is just too predictable to get past the Bulldogs. Cody Walker though, did show some flourishes so perhaps the Bunnies have a work in progress there. Having criticised the team in the red and the green the Bulldogs attack doesn't have me salivating either. All the interest (for me) lies in the battle of the forwards. The winner on that front wins the game, and I do lke that Bulldogs engine room. The other Reynolds (Josh) to score the match-winner.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 6

Result – Bulldogs 24 defeated Rabbitohs 9

Newcastle Knights vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Knights continue to compete but winning seems a bridge too far. Their only win this year was against the Titans when just about everything went wrong for their opponent. Plenty went wrong for the Chooks in round five – their defence was barely there against the Broncos, but you would expect their coaching staff to focus us on that in the lead up to this clash. There's certainly nothing wrong with the Roosters attack, so that should click into gear at some point during the 80 minutes. My gut feel – a low scoring first half and the tricolours class with the ball to shine brightly in the last quarter of the game.

Verdict – Roosters by 14

Result – Roosters 24 defeated Knights 6

Brisbane Broncos vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

I'm having one bet this weekend, and it's a slightly unusual one – I'm backing the Titans with a 16.5 point start at $1.53. While I expect the Broncos to prevail I've a sneaky feeling the Titans are going to pull a competitive effort out of their collective rear ends on Good Friday. Peats and McQueen are back for the Titans, and there's a few ex-Broncos in that Titans line-up (Taylor, Copley and Wallace) who will give their all. The Broncos are without Ben Hunt, and I'm not entirely convinced that the Broncos playmaking duo of Milford and Nikorima will work. I have to go with the Broncos on class alone, but don't let me talk you out of tipping an upset here.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos 24 defeated Titans 22

Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

Unfortunately for the Sea Eagles the Storm don't lose two games in a row very often. The last time that happened was in 2015 in rounds 14 and 15 during the Origin period of the season. Note that Munster and Bromwich (Jesse) have been named on an extended bench but it would be a surprise if either are playing this weekend. The Storm played in atrocious conditions in their round five loss and if there's one team you don't want to face in the wet it's the Sharks. They'll be back near their best this weekend. The Sea Eagles were surprisingly awful against the Dragons. Let's hope that was a one-off rather than an indication of where their season is heading. Both sides take to this game with under-strength forward packs but Bellamy will give the purple forwards a simple game plan and the best brains in the business will win the game from there..

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 30 defeated Sea Eagles 26

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

While most of the teams I had pencilled in for greatness in 2017 are letting me down, the Raiders are starting to look like the side we all hoped they could be. Competitive losses against the better sides and dominant victories over the poorer sides sees them sitting on the cusp of the top four. Meanwhile the Warriors are on the cusp of the top eight after successive victories at Mt Smart. Their challenge now, as it always has been, is to win a game in Australia. They haven't done that in season 2017 thus far, and I'm not enthused about them breaking their duck in Canberra.

Verdict – Raiders by 10

Result – Raiders 20 defeated Warriors 8

St George Illawarra Dragons vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – WIN Stadium

Few if any would have thought the Dragons would be on the top of the NRL ladder at any point this season. Five wins from six starts and a very healthy points differential – this is a side that is putting opponents to the sword. To think their coach was expected to come under a ton of scrutiny this season but the critics have put their mouths in their pockets for now. There's no reason to doubt them this weekend either – playing at home against a team without their co-captains and their first-choice fullback and hooker. It's hard to measure how much Thurston is worth to the fortunes of the Cowboys but the short answer is 'heaps'. The Dragons have racked up 89 points in the last three rounds while conceding just 28, and they've done that against teams that have been beating other teams. I'm expecting more of the same.

Verdict – Dragons by 16

Result – Dragons 28 defeated Cowboys 22

Penrith Panthers vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Pepper Stadium

In round five the Storm beat the Panthers 28-6. In round six the Sharks beat the Storm in Melbourne 11-2. In round seven the Sharks face the Panthers, and the Panthers are the favourites. Granted the Panthers have most of their first grade squad returning on Sunday afternoon, but are we to assume they can just turn on a good performance like a tap? We haven't seen much of that thus far. The Panthers haven't beaten a good side yet this year and the Sharks are heading west with their best seventeen. To borrow a phrase from the great Phil Gould (before he starts borrowing some of mine) – what am I missing here?

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 28 defeated Panthers 2

Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Here's another game where I feel like the market has it wrong. The Eels have lost four games in a row and, to be frank, haven't looked like winning. The Tigers competed well against the Storm two weeks ago and then followed that up under the new coach with a surprise victory over the Cowboys in Townsville. Those two performances tell me the effort is there. Mitchell Moses gets to prove he is serious about putting in for the Tigers this season against his next club. Even if Tedesco and Woods are going somewhere else they'd want to show their next club how good they are. And given the neutral venue the Eels don't even get any home ground advantage. I'm wrong occasionally and I'll probably be wrong here too, but the Tigers for me in what is apparently an upset.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result – Eels 26 defeated Tigers 22

At least for Dogs & Rabbits
I got a feeling he may be "sooking" for a while.
Don't like them but go the Doggies tonight.

Thank you "a' I've been sitting here waiting for the Thursday night game only to find out there isn't one.
No doubt Coach is smarter than me. He will post tomorrow.
Thanks also Chris.

"a" I'm knackered. Been moving my brother's Mother in Law into a nursing home for the past couple of days, cleaning out her unit, taking heaps to the tip, trying to organize a garage sale, man she had some stuff, and also dealing with the Lawyers about her sale and getting into the nursing home.
All in all not a lot of fun.
The best part is she is a beautiful lady of 93 years and still quite able to get around (on a walker). Also she is a Broncos tragic and watches every game. Loves eating whiting, prawns and sandcrab. Keeps me on the water fishing whenever possible.
Gotta love our senior citizens.

Hi everyone,

Round 7 is upon us and Newbie’s a bit late posting tonight. All good though ‘cos I can sleep in tomorrow. Just finished watching the AFL Thursday night game between the Mighty West Coast and Sydney and managed to fall asleep as soon as the full time siren sounded. A hard day at work today with a 5.30 start has ruined me. Just woke up and back to finishing off these tips. And awaaaay we go…

Bulldogs - Yes, the Bunnies did knock off the Panthers last week but Penrith were a bit under-manned weren’t they? Not sure if they have what it takes to knock off a team that’s beaten the Broncos and an improved Knights. This might be close though but I’m still thinking the Doggies should be able to cover this one.

Roosters - My BBB have managed 2 losses in a row, with last week especially heartbreaking & bewildering. I am impressed however with how the Knights have steadily improved and reckon they might’ve been a tad unlucky last week. I know we don’t have a great record with regards to winning away from home but pretty confident we’ll be bouncing back to winning form this week.

Broncos - If the Broncos can play similar to how they played last week, the poor ol’ Titans have a snowflake’s chance in hell of winning this. Seriously, the Broncos were a bit “scary” last week. Or was it a case of my BBB not showing up? Regardless, Broncos will get the job done, even without Ben Hunt.

Storm - So, the Storm Troopers finally got beaten. I watched that game and the weather certainly didn’t help their cause. But hey, Cronulla had to play in the exact same conditions so no excuses. If I had to have a reason to tip the Storm it would be that they have won 10 of their last 11 games as away favourites in the past 12 months. That and the fact that they seldom lose 2 in a row. The Storm for me.

Raiders - The Raiders seem to have found their “groove” as have the Warriors but I’m thinking the Raiders have a bit of a class edge here. Lookin’ like 3 on the trot for the Vikings.

Dragons - The Cowboys simply have too many of their stars MIA and I reckon they’re gonna struggle this week. The Dragons are sitting on top for a reason and Newbie can’t see them losing this one.

Panthers - Those Penrith players missing from last week are coming back this week (I think) which will no doubt help. Yes, the Sharks were very good last week in Melbourne but I’m wondering if it might take its toll on them. Winning at Pepper is always hard so I’m leaning towards a Panthers win here.

Tigers - I think this one could go either way. All things considered, I am a wee bit confused as to how a team (the Eels) can lose 4 in a row and still be favourites to win this. What am I missing here people? Yeah, they were beaten by some pretty handy teams but still. The Tigers on the other hand have been fairly good of late and did manage to knock off the Cowboys at 1300 last week. I’m buggered if I know. Sorry Baggy but I'm going with the gut and tipping the Stripey Cats.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.

P.S. If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest have to drown too? Hmmm…

Come on Coach and Johnny Ray you can come back we need you

christine's picture

Happy easter Johnny Ray to you & your family please come back it's not the same without you here bro , & Thinker or TLH could either one of you please get in touch with johnny ray & ask him to come back & if johnny ray still doesn't want to then we will just have to respect his decision even if we don't like it , thank you Thinker & or TLH & happy easter to both of you as well from all of us ...

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes 'a', it is very interesting of J. Awesome's evaluation and hand me down on the F word.
As much as we have ladies/females on this site, and that expression isn't nice to use or overuse, as we respect them for the input here at Thinker site. Any word published in Aussie Dictionary is accepted as legal print.

That is where on registration at some sites, one reads the rules of agreement. When in Rome - do as The Romans do.
I lay my case and response, but would prefer to use the word "frig", if that need arose.

Hey Coach - what say you Old Son.

a's picture

Yeah Coach what do you think of the F word

christine's picture

Look I use that word myself because I had to learn to defend myself growing up ie with the school I went to but the Thinker has asked us not too for his own reasons & we have to respect that so lets drop the use of it on this website & try to use something else instead so we don't annoy anyone .

Anonymous's picture

Christine, you may want to check with Thinker on your change to the 'Tigers' as on the one page of tips, the Eels show as your choice.
Cheers,
Mary S

a's picture

Anonymous Christine isn't in the comp

a's picture

Yes I agree Christine we may all use that word sometimes but you should read the rules on the website but I didnt know about that rules but I should of because Ive been on this site for about 6 years

a's picture

If anyone has Johnny Ray or Coach Email could do please message them to come back please

christine's picture

Anonymous If you check what time the tips were posted there is a difference in times so all I did was change from one tip to another tip which i'm allowed to do & i'm not actually on the tipping ladder this is just a bit of fun for me that's all ...

christine's picture

"a" It doesn't matter what you read in the rules it's the fact the Thinker has asked us not to use that word because he received a complaint from someones mother who has a younger child that also accesses the website so we have to respect that "a" ...

a's picture

Yes Thinker is in charged of the site so it up to him what we can and cant do

christine's picture

"a" Don't worry about everyone that hasn't put their tips in , you have't put your tips in yet .

Hi there Coach good to see you are still around :) cheers mate.

Anonymous's picture

im at anz and i dont support either team so to get a feel i went down to the dogs supporters but got knocked back coz the metal detector didnt go off. then i tried to get in to the burrow where the hardcore bunny supporters are and they asked me to smile then knocked me back coz i had all my teeth.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Coach.

Hey I'm sitting here cheering for Souths when I remembered I tipped the Dogs......funny how that can change your perception.

Swearing thing....Thinker has spoken.
Do you see the "f" word in your local paper?
Or on billboards, or hear it on radio?...enough said.

Doggies just hit the front....back to the tv.

Coach Potato's picture

You hear it at the pub - no one blinks.
You hear it at the movies - no one blinks.
You hear it at the footy - no one blinks.

It's part of life and if you are too young to hear it, then sure, stay away from the above places until you think you are old enough.

As for this page, if we now need to cater for nine years olds eyes and ears, then I have come back by accident. I should have signed off last week.

a's picture

Welcome back Coach I hope we get Johnny Ray back too

mark ashford's picture

COACH I thought you were smarter than that...obviously not.
There are youngsters looking at this site for tips etc.
Should we just abandon respect?
Perhaps you would like to see c--t, s--t etc used here?
Yes you have come back by accident so as you suggest why not sign off.

pabdul's picture

so true but ive never heard it at the movies where do you go eros cinema in the cross.

mark ashford's picture

Padbul.....you funny man

mark ashford's picture

Coach I have just read your post again. Why do you shit stir?
Because you can! Must be fun being an arsehole!

Coach Potato's picture

You mustn't watch too many movies.

Coach Potato's picture

Sure is funny how these posts against me with everything under the sun getting said pass muster.

mark ashford's picture

Thinker I hope the words "shit" and "arsehole" are allowed

Coach Potato's picture

This page has been biting the dust for a week.

Time for it to start eating.

christine's picture

Welcome back coach & again sorry for your loss .

mark ashford's picture

OH COACH we are over awed are you going to start feeding us something intelligent?
Perhaps teaching us and the youngsters to swear "cos it's in the pubs and movies" so it must be right.....can't wait!
Or are you going to give us some RL insights, stats etc.
Stay away from the crap and do what you do best!

pabdul's picture

its like coach has a chip on his shoulders since the doctor slapped his face instead of his arse to make him cry when he was born

Coach Potato's picture

Not much of a welcome when opinions still aren't allowed to be aired if they happen to be mine.

The H word needs to come out again, but what's the point. The site supports those people.

I've been victimised and not much doubt, bullied off this site from the administrator down.

Thanks to the supporters but it's not enough. If one week felt like forever, better get used to the real thing.

The Thinker's picture

Those of you that had trouble submitting your tips....apologies.....If you've added them in the comments I will push them through.

Not sure what Coach is talking about but I'll have a look at some point. I'm not here all the time....sometimes I'm busy separating my actual children and their squabbles. School holidays argh!!!

mark ashford's picture

Coach did you ever stop to think that your footy insights were why people liked you on this site?
Then you started calling people hypocrites, denigrating players, coaches and clubs etc.
You have posted very aggressively since day 1....why?
Heaps of people read this site for their weekly workplace tips.
You do have good RL knowledge so why does your temper get in the way?

a's picture

Why aren't my tips submitted

a's picture

I think you could type the f word like this
