Round twenty six selections

North Queensland Cowboys vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

Where relevant I'll do my best to explain the implications of different outcomes when it comes to the top eight.

The Cowboys, currently 7th, could finish as high as 5th and as low as 9th. 5th or 9th are unlikely, but possible. If they stay in the top eight they will be travelling to Sydney for the first week of the finals, unless they can get themselves into 5th or 6th place with a win on Thursday night. A loss means they could miss the eight, but may not. If the Dragons lose on Sunday, the Cowboys are in the top eight regardless of all other results. The Broncos, currently 3rd, cannot drop out of the top four, but there is a chance (albeit slim) that they can finish in the top two. With the Storm as minor premiers, no-one really wants to finish fourth. If the Broncos win, they avoid 4th.

I certainly gave the Eels a chance last week, but that performance by the Broncos in round 25 has me scratching my head harder than ever. It wasn't just the loss, or the magnitude of the loss – it was the way the Broncos lost that left me baffled. To quote Gus the Snail – it was very unBroncos. Poor defence and schoolboy errors...a repeat of that performance and they'll be losing again. My tip here is on a hunch really, and I'm hunching the Broncos one really bad game is out of the way before the finals commence. September is not the month to have a bad game. The Cowboys picked up their first win in a while last round but they had to work for it. I'm assuming a switched on Broncos is a tougher opponent than the Tigers. Five minutes into this game and we will know if the Broncos switch is on or off. I'm tipping on.

Verdict – Broncos by 10

Result – Broncos by 10

Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

A home game for the Eels played at the home ground for the Bunnies, but given the circumstances I expect the Eels will still have the bulk of the support in the crowd. This game is essentially meaningless for the Rabbits – they can't even break into the top ten and the worst they can do is drop one place on the ladder from 11th to 12th. They aren't farewelling any legends of the club on Friday night...so why would they try? Pride I suppose. The pride of Redfern. The Eels could move to third (technically they could move to second but it's so unlikely it hardly seems worth mentioning). Even if they don't have the carrot of a top three finish to play for they can avoid the stick of falling out of the top four with a win. A loss and the Sharks can potentially take their place in the top four. Whether fourth spot is a carrot this season remains to be seen. As mentioned previously, fourth spot means a trip to Melbourne next week. In any case, I think the Rabbitohs are only turning up to this game to be polite, and the Eels would have to try really hard if they wanted to lose. I've seen some pretty weird things on rugby league fields over the years but that would be right near the top of the weird list. I say the Eels win this by 40, and head down to Melbourne with a sense of self-belief...and legitimately so.

Verdict – Eels by 40

Result – Eels by 6

Sydney Roosters vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

Providing the Broncos and/or Eels win earlier games, the Chooks need a win to stay in the top two. The Titans could (possibly) move up one place on the ladder to 13th with a win, or could (possibly) slip down one place to 15th with a place. The Titans will be without James, Wallace, Peats, Roberts and Copley. The Chooks are one winger short of naming their best seventeen. Nothing is certain in this game, but this is right next door to certain.

Verdict – Roosters by 28

Result – Roosters by 4

Manly Sea Eagles vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – Lottoland

If the three teams below the Panthers on the ladder win the Panthers are out of the top eight with a loss. It seems unlikely, but it's not crazy unlikely. With a win the best they can do is move to fifth, which isn't much different to finishing sixth in the scheme of things. There's a little more pressure on the Sea Eagles – a loss leaves the door open for the Dragons to take that last spot in the top eight away from them. The Sea Eagles have had a pretty good season to be fair but to my eye it looks like they peaked some time ago. In the last three weeks they've lost to the 15th placed Tigers and the 12th placed Bulldogs and they barely got away with a golden point win over the Warriors (who haven't looked like beating anyone forever). Compare that form to the Panthers – in the last three weeks they have faced an opponent with everything to play for. The Panthers have won twice and lost narrowly to the Dragons last weekend. That form should be good enough, and the Panthers did beat the Sea Eagles in round 18. Given the circumstances I could almost call this for game of the round, except that every time the Cowboys and Broncos play each other they give us a rip-snorter.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result – Sea Eagles by 16

Melbourne Storm vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – AAMI Park

There are only two games this round that will have no influence on our top eight, and this is one of them. You don't need me to tell you how dominant the Storm have been this season, but let me tell you this – The Storm have a points differential of +271. Only one other team (Broncos) have a differential higher than +100, and the next best differential in the top eight is on +68. What's even more disturbing is that they are getting better as the season wears on (or their opposition is getting worse). In their last five games they've scored 190 points and conceded just 45. If they were performing at that level all season their points differential would be +667. Sheesus McSneezus. Is this competition over? It almost looks like it.

Verdict – Storm by 14

Result – Storm by 26

Newcastle Knights vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

I think we have all accepted that the Knights have won the wooden spoon, but I doubt any team has ever won the wooden spoon with as much class as the Knights have done in season 2017. I hope they pack the joint out on Sunday afternoon, and I hope they win. The Sharks can (potentially) finish 8th with a loss but it's pretty darn unlikely. If the Eels managed to lose to the Rabbits the Sharks could be playing for a top four spot (again...unlikely) and they're too far behind the Broncos on points differential to think they can move past them. So to me it looks like the Sharks may not have much to play for by the time this game kicks off. Because of that, and because they haven't been that impressive in recent weeks anyway, I'm tipping what the bookies are telling me is an outrageous upset. Those of you winning your tipping comps shouldn't do this, but I'm not winning so here goes nothing...

Verdict – Knights by 2

Result – Sharks by 8

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

The good news for the Dragons is that they are definitely playing for a top eight spot...unless the Panthers and Sea Eagles game ends in a draw. The Red V have a superior points differential to the three teams above them on the ladder. It's a big game. Note that this is the second game this round where the home team is playing at ANZ – the home ground of the away team. The Bulldogs are in a rich vein of form by their standards, and they did beat the Dragons earlier this season, but given the circumstances I can't see them winning this.

Verdict – Dragons by 8

Result – Bulldogs by 6

Wests Tigers vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday night – Leichhardt Oval

It's almost cruel that these two teams are playing the last game of the regular season, because these are the two teams that would really like this season to be over. The Warriors have won just one game away from home all year. The Tigers might be in 15th place but I've no reason to believe the Warriors will do anything to improve their away record now. The Tigers get to farewell Aaron Woods and James Tedesco with a home game...and Woodsy loves this ground. Back the big hairy bear to score a try at any old price.

Verdict – Tigers by 8

Result – Tigers by 12

Wally Lewis - round twenty six selections (in bold)

  • EELS vs Rabbitohs
  • ROOSTERS vs Titans
  • SEA EAGLES vs Panthers

Hi Newbie
Nice assessment mate.
Here in QLD we have lots of horrible cane toads but must admit I've never seen one on a stool. Have they reached WA yet? One of the worst ecological disasters in this country.
The only good cane toad is...no not a dead one but one wearing a maroon jersey.
Had a huge laugh watching peptide Paul hanging onto that guys legs, the drugs must have worn off.
Good luck to your Chooks this week should be a walk in the park.

Well this is the last round of the 2017 nrl season and it's gonna be interesting to see which team on 6th, 7th & 8th will maintain their placing if the Dragons win. The dragons will go against the bulldogs and hopefully they win but I'm not gonna tip against my bulldogs.

My round 26 tips:

Broncos by 8
Eels by 16
Roosters by 20
Eagles by 7
Storm by 14
Sharks by 14
Bulldogs by 4
Tigers by 1

Enjoy your footy..!

Spartan Warrior Please get your tips in for the last round of the regular season ...

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Hello everyone, an exciting final round coming up, probably the most hyped I've been for the final round in recent seasons. My tips for this week are:

Broncos by 10- Broncos to bounce back from the horrible performace particularly defencely with a win here which means that the Cowboys are at risk of not making the 8 but they need Manly to win for that to happen most likely unless Manly demolish Penrith which would most likely not happen.

Eels by 14- Eels to run riot over the Rabbitohs here to secure their top 4 spot.

Roosters by 26- Can't see anything else but a Roosters win here.

Manly by 4- Man this is going to be an interesting game and will be an absolute cracker. If Manly lose they are out if Dragons lose period. But I just think Manly back at Brooky (don't like the name Lottoland compared to Brooky) will get a tight win here over the Panthers. If Moylan doesn't play, it'll help Manly causes just a bit more though Panthers' defendant casualty is Edwards their fullback who is a huge out though I've gotta say Whare will be no slouch in that fullback position. Even though home ground advantage doesn't necessarily matter in most NRL games, I just think back at home Manly to come away with the win.

Storm by 10- What else come I say, I've said it many times before on how much of a standout the Storm have been but I won't boast on about it this week. Storm to win.

Sharks by 10- Don 't count the Knights out people. They are definitely in this. Though Sharks to come out on top here in what I think will be a great game of footy.

Dragons by 13- The mighty Dragons to get a top 8 berth with the win here over the Dogs to break their hoodoo over us. Gotta say looking forward to seeing Reynolds' exit if he plays this one. Apparently they are doing something big for him over their at ANZ. Also, even though I babbled on about how we need a coach away from our system last week, credit to Mary and also the senior players to not letting Dugan play last week being late for the school bus is just unacceptable. Thankfully that didn't distract us too much as we got the win and a great win as well, we fought real hard to get to the position that we are in now. All we've got to do is win, it's as simple as that, unless both the Broncos-Cowboys and Manly-Panthers games are draws then we are no chance which I doubt is going happen.

Awesome. Good luck with everyone's teams for this week and with everyone's tips for this week. Bring on the final round!!! Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Hahahaha why did I say school bus, I meant team bus. My bad guys.

Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dragons-fanboy's picture

I forgot the Tigers-Warriors game.

And finally... Tigers by 7- Tigers to send off Tedesco and Woods with a win here.

Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Miss Christine and other Loyal Thinkers tipsters, posters and plotters.

Thank you all for sending wishes. There are more major ops, but this was truly an experience. I was awake and alert but sedated with a face covering to block out views. Doing it slow on computer with glare and brightness and colours - oh so smart, you thinks its Disneyland.
I have drops to take and one is like grit in your eyes, or imagine the pressure of when you are hit in the eye, with a ball.
Attended surgeon this morning for patch removal and very happy with lines I was reading on the chart. With eye having been so lazy for numerous years, he was very surprised with results and waits for the subsides to go.
I only felt two pins from needle going into eye, during op, but the area was that numb, I couldn't feel pain.

So before I go, love to hear from those that don't like the idea of Manly making the finals. Love it - I luv it.
We are at home, the boys will lift themselves, Curtis is back in No 12 and he'll be bustin for a run. If its a nice evening (5.30pm game), they'll be ready for nice swim at the beach or the pool.

Keep well - Big Pete in Gods Country of Bx.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks on the comment Spartan,
Truly something different what you posted on NRL Volunteers.
We hear of several high profiles and what they do, but rarely see or hear of the underachievers and what they do.

There are quite a number of retired players and wider spectrum sportspersons that do similar.

Keep well and suggest you don't come up this way with any swords.
National news spells that out, after last nights events at a place called Kelso.

Cheers - Big Pete

PABDUL, PABDUL - Where the bloody hell are ya????????

Keep well - Big Pete (SBAB).

Mary S's picture

Hi Big Pete - good to have you on board again. Always good if the surgeon is pleased with the results!!!
From my point of view (comp wise) I'm hoping Panthers win, but I will send my congratulations if it is your team instead!!!!!
Keep well.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Spartan
thanks for that insight it's great to see the players putting in for their local communities.
apart from a couple of minor mentions the QLD boys seem to have been left out.
I know you lifted it from the daily telegraph so had to be NSW centric
the Broncos, Cowboys and Titans do all that and more.
No one does more for indigenous RL than the QLD boys
just thought I'd add a bit to your list

christine's picture

Big pete Do you have to wear sunglasses with the light being to bright since you had your op ?

christine's picture

Mark Your right I believe preston Campbell does a lot for the indigenous as does ryan james ...

Need Manly or Dragon to lose to Panthers and Bulldogs

mark ashford's picture

Nice to see the Broncs get a win in Townsville.
Don't think the refs did us any favours.
Broncos defense back to it's best.
"a", Tailspin, Mary S and other Cowboy supporters you need results to go your way to stay in....good luck.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Well I think that ends the dream of better than 4th place finish. Good win by the Broncos.

imprez's picture

Do you guys think Sharks are gonna win 13+?

BigPeteBx's picture

Morning Imprez,
Welcome and hope all is good, wherever you reside and write/post from.
I take it u r a Sharky.........Sharks will need to lift up at Newcastle.
It may be close or they will run away with it.
Brett Kimmorley is tipping Knights. I think our Thinker has taken them as well, because of surprises, that could amount this round.
Never know with Storm at home either, wanting to come into the finals series - fresh and injury free. They might roll over for Raiders, as Storm have minor premiership well wrapped up.
But games in any sport, taken lightly, is where many injuries can occur.

Cheers and keep well - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Miss Christine,
In these early days, it is a safety precaution to wear proper prescribed sunnies, not $2.00 Chemist sales. The light and sun is so bright and glaring. Too strong for the eyes. I know lady from a local optoms that says one gent had both eyes done a few years ago, and he wears sunglasses all the time when outside.
You can get sunglasses made up for usual wearing/reading/driving glasses.
But as they say and there are those out there selling cheap, you get what you pay. Much like paint for a house.

Keep well and here's to seeing you clearer.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Thank you Miss Mary.
Things going ok, so far, but verrrryyyyy bright.
Best wishes with your tipping. Also like your lady like Cowboys avatar you use. Surround it with some glitter and it will sure brighten mine any anyone's day.
Keep well - Big Pete

Hello all,
Mr Thinker the tipping entry form is still open. The glitch is still there. Brave call on the knights, and you are right probably the classiest wooden spooners for a long time. Every team respects Newcastle and their coach. Definitely a bright future awaits them. It's not a good thing going into the finals with a loss so I can't see Cronulla or Melbourne losing. Can't wait to see the Manly v Penrith game. Manly will be revved up after the Penrith players comments that Penrith is the better side. Anyway cheers all from Mr Awesome.

The Annoying Devil's picture

OMG what's happened to this site it's gone from game of thrones to the Brady bunch it's not funny or controversial anymore the only thing keeping me hanging is will lady Christine ride off into the sunset with the spartan on his fine Arab charger
And to top it off
Mr thinker this is mark I have a silly question
No questions are too silly ask as many as you like mark
How do the finals work
I stand corrected that is a silly question who do you go for son
I go for the broncos
They should finish 3rd so they will get 2 games 2 loses then 3 months off to work out how to get a decent halfback
I have another question
You know the rules only 1 question per week

Mary S's picture

Was a good win by the Broncos Baggy. I was obviously hoping for a different result but Broncos had certainly tightened their defence this week.
Did not see your tips listed this week -what happened?

@ 'a' - your tips are not listed either although you have them in the comments.

@ pabdul - where are you? Hope all is well, as no comments/snide digs for a while and no tips registered either.

Yeah, the Perth Stadium is just about finished. The turf’s been laid and they tested the lights and lasers out the other night. No problem with being ready for the Double-Header for Round 1 next year. The Rabbitohs have confirmed for Game 1 and the Bulldogs have confirmed for Game 2. Don’t know who their playing against though. We’ll have to wait until the NRL decides on the 2018 schedule I suppose.

I don’t really care how the AFL feels to tell you the truth Mary. They’ve butchered the game so much in the last 10 years that it’s almost unrecognisable to me these days. So much so that I’ve decided not to follow it next year. I’m not even gonna bother with the AFL Footy Tipping either. And all this coming from a born and bred West Aussie. I’d rather watch NRL where you know you’re gonna get BIG MEN, BIG HITS, BIG GAME each and every week. Anyway, if you or anyone else would like a sneak peek of the Perth Stadium, just click on the following link. Stay well Mary. Cheers.

Check out the Perth Stadium

@ Mark Ashford

Yeah, had reports of cane toads being found up north across the border from the NT some years ago. The buggers obviously worked their way across QLD and into the NT and then into WA. Haven’t heard much lately so either we killed ‘em all off or it’s not that much of a problem or we don’t care anymore. Who knows eh?

It’s interesting to note that if you Google “Peptide Paul”, the very first result you get (besides the paid advert of course) is for the Cry Baby. The guy is a legend (but for all the wrong reasons). Hey don’t get me wrong, credit where credit’s due. He’s a bloody fantastic player (honestly) but he ruins everything by sometimes being a little grubby and always whingeing to the refs. If he could just get rid of those 2 bad habits I’d have so much more respect for him. Anyway, that’s life I suppose.

Now as far as my BBB’s game against the Titans goes, I’m not so sure it will be a “walk in the park” as you’ve mentioned. Mate, I hope it is but this wonderful game has taught me to never assume any result is cut and dried. Fingers crossed. Cheers bro’.

Thanks so much for that list of 50 my friend. Wasn’t aware so many did so much. Makes a man feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. Heartening to know that hard, tough guys have a caring side to them. I don’t see or hear of any AFL players doing such things. Hey, they might do but you never see or hear of it in my experience. Maybe if Ben Cousins did a bit of what the NRL boys are doing he might not be in the place he’s in at the moment. Easy for me to say I suppose. so maybe I shouldn’t be so quick to judge. Just saying … Thanks again for that post kind Sir! Quanto id gratum est ...

christine's picture

Good to hear your op went OK. Slow and steady gets the prize my friend. Take things slowly and get yourself back even better than before. Love seeing that you’re confident with your boys’ chances this week. That’s the way it should be. Love how you show your loyalty and passion in a dignified manner, all the while affording everyone else some respect. A giant amongst men indeed. Oh, and even though I’ve tipped against them, best of luck to your Boys from Brooky.

As Christine asked about whether you wore sunglasses with the light being too bright, I thought you might like checking out the following video. I remember it with fondness as I actually had a mate back in the day who actually did this but for all the wrong reasons (ha-ha). Cheers big fella – keep well…

The new Stadium looks very impressive Newbie - thanks for the link.

Hi all,
Great to hear from you Mr Newbie. I agree with Mr Spartan Warrior that there are a lot good people in league and the positives far outweigh the negatives. You will be happy to know that the NRL is committed to bringing more games to Perth. Starting with 2018 1st round double header. You've also got a World Cup double-header that will be staged at nib Stadium in November and game two of the 2019 State of Origin will be played at Perth Stadium. So there you go Mr Newbie there is a lot of good league coming your way. Cheers from Mr Awesome.

I'm also interested in knowing how sharks will perform against knights ? Any predictions as to their team status and how they'll go up against he knights defence ?

Jamesbolony's picture

I second the previous comment too. But I'm interested in eels throwing tonight's game so they can avoid the storms game next week. Is there any possibility to this ?

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi all,
Mr JamesBolony Parramatta won't want to throw this one away deliberately and finish 5th? Who wants to be in a do or die situation first week in the finals. Whether Cronulla win or lose and Parramatta win. The worse case scenario for Parramatta will be playing teams below them in the first week of the finals. Remember, 1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6, 4 v 5
Cheers from Mr Awesome

Hi all,
Sorry Mr JamesBolony it's been a long day at work. Fairdinkum, that's what happens when you get older. You are right Parramatta will play Melbourne if they win but can't be knocked out. They'll play to win for sure.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

Hi Annoying Devil and welcome to the site.
You may have noticed (or maybe not) I have a broncs jersey attached to my posts. No more silly questions ok.
Being a nice guy, I assume your first post was an attempt at humour?
Please try again as we love a good laugh here.
We all like the site just as it is.
Are you really a Broncos supporter? don't seem to give them much hope.

Evening Newbie from here in NSW.
Nice stadium coming to the finish.
Where precisely is the suburb of Belmont. Plan says a new six tier railway station adjoining on East of Perth line. I'd take it well away from WACA and Gloucester Park complexes.
I worked with NSW Railways for 34 years and yes, had a lovely trip on Indian Pacific to Perth back in 1980's.

Mate, if you want some big hits during the Summer, get into BBL Cricket.
I've been watching more last season and it gets better as we go.
Jono Dean comes these neck of the woods. Played for Adelaide Strikers last season.

Keep well - Big Pete

Thanks Newbie for the vid link.
I seem to also recall a Top 40 hit by same name, that did well.

Tell you what, some good songs on that link. My Sharona.......
Go take a look folks. Some great songs there and nice link to one of Rod Stewarts ex's - Alana, who I seem to recall was a Kiwi.

Cheers Newbie and we'll be a hummin. Have a great rockin weekend.

Check AD grammar and spelling. Eerie. We aren't going to throw the game to allow 8th a chance at our expense, you want to be the best, play the best and get stronger. Bring on Melbourne.

Hey Mark A - thanks for the encouragement mate.

BTW - how far r u from Hervey Bay roughly?
My friends who lived on Gold Coast have relocated to there.

Keep well - finals will be finals and no one should write Manly off at Brooky, in the last game of the season. They played some bloody scrappy footy, in second half of the season and along with a few injuries managed to keep it together. So tomorrow night from The Fortress and with the Fortress Eagle, I'm hoping he can drive them home.

No mark not humorous just annoying I'm not the humorous devil
Humorous would be more like I have a fellow devil worshiper who's dyslexic and doesn't know it but has sold his soul to santa

I think Sharks and Storms aren't going to win more than 1-12 lead cause they'll be making sure their players remain injury free as much possible. If anything, storm can risk a lost to raiders as it won't drop them from rank1. But how big of an upset would that be for everyone!!
