Round twenty five selections

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

It's still the biggest rivalry in the game (at club level), so it's nice to see them square off before the finals, in case they don't square off again. Second plays fourth and it's unlikely the result here will change the final finishing order – the Roosters will remain second no matter what while there's a slim chance the Bunnies could slip to fifth. The Chooks welcome back Cordnor and Cronk here – handy inclusions to be sure, although it's worth watching for late team changes in this round. Taukeiaho is out with a rib injury, while Kyle Turner (quadricep) is the only change for the Bunnies. While it looks like there's little to play for here, the rivalry between these two sides means we're likely to have a finals-like level of effort and passion one week early. I like that. I like that very much. The Bunnies are outsiders but I'm tipping them here – they have a little more to play for and those attacking combinations involving Cook, Murray and Walker are going to give plenty of finals opponents headaches in the weeks ahead. Not quite the game of the round given the circumstances, but it's a must-watch contest nonetheless.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result – Rabbitohs 16 defeated Roosters 10

Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Bankwest Stadium

Fifth plays sixth and again, perhaps not a lot to play for here. Manly could potentially sneak into the top four with a big win (should the Rabbitohs lose), but otherwise both sides are guaranteed a home final next weekend. The big news leading into this game is the season-ending injury to Tommy Turbo. While we can only applaud the performances of Manly earlier this season when he wasn't available he's a massive out for a finals campaign against the best teams in the competition. The Eels are one of the better teams in the competition, but after back-to-back losses to the Bulldogs and the Broncos you would expect them to be desperate to find some winning form. With that in mind, and with an enviable record at this ground, I'm with the Eels.

Verdict – Eels by 4

Result – Eels 32 defeated Sea Eagles 16

Melbourne Storm vs North Queensland Cowboys – Friday night – AAMI Park

I've had two NRL bets this season (gamble responsibly). Now my first bet this season (Broncos to win the premiership) is looking pretty ordinary right now, so take this second bet with a grain of salt. At $5.50, I'm backing the Cowboys to knock off the Storm in Melbourne on Friday night. It's madness of course, because I think the Storm have taught me a royal purple lesson all season on the rare occasions I have tipped against them, but here I am doing it again. Clearly I am a sucker for punishment. The Storm are resting Munster, Addo-Carr and the less important (but still altogether useful) Smith (Brandon). It wouldn't completely surprise me if the more important Smith (Cameron) gets a rest too, and there could be other changes in the forwards as well. But that's wild speculation isn't it? What we do know is that the Storm don't have any real reason to give their best here, other than a win in front of their fans before they lift the JJ Giltenan Shield. Is that enough? It probably is, but I'll take them on anyway. Madness.

Verdict – Cowboys by 2

Result – Storm 24 defeated Cowboys 16

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

The Raiders would slip to fourth if they lose here and the Rabbitohs win, but that doesn't seem to worry Ricky Stuart too much. He's resting Nicoll-Klokstad, Rapana, Soliola and Bateman before the finals. Perhaps the Raiders would rather play the Storm in Melbourne than the Roosters in Sydney. Regardless, the Canberra faithful will turn up in numbers for another afternoon of viking mischief. The Warriors are resting injured players with Harris-Tevita, Hiku and Herbert finishing their season one week early. I suspect many of their team-mates wish they could join them.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Warriors 24 defeated Raiders 20

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

While it looks like the Broncos are playing finals football this year there is a slight possibility that they don't. If they lose this game and the Tigers and Sharks game ends in a draw the Broncos slip to 9th. The Broncos are the only team in the top ten with a negative points differential, which would imply their wins have been by narrower margins than their losses. The Bulldogs have given their fans something to look forward to with improved performances at the back end of the season, but their inability to score points remains a problem.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Bulldogs 30 defeated Broncos 14

Gold Coast Titans vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

15th plays 16th and it's a shame we don't have a battle for the wooden spoon on our hands. What we do have is a Titans team hoping to give whoever bothers to turn up to watch them on Saturday night a reason to cheer, and a Dragons team hoping to prove they're a lot better than the team that ran last. It's hard to make a compelling argument for either side, but the Dragons have lost their most competitive player (McInnes) to a broken leg, while the Titans have a chance to give one of their most popular players (Michael Gordon) a win in his last ever game. Titans it is.

Verdict – Titans by 2

Result – Dragons 24 defeated Titans 16

Wests Tigers vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

The winner plays finals football so it's the game of the round, and it's not the free-to-air game on the Wide World of Sports (Thinker shakes head). Let's hope the weather plays nice in Sydney on Sunday afternoon and this beautiful suburban ground gets to show itself off. Robbie Farah is running freely at training despite breaking his leg not so long ago. He's been named in the reserves along with Moses Mybe, so watch for late team changes going into this game. For those that missed it, the Sharks would have finished in third place this year if the NRL didn't have conversions. Ouch! Shaun Johnson is back after hurting himself in the warm-up last weekend. His absence was probably the difference between winning and losing last weekend. The challenge for the Sharks is to pick themselves up after a shattering loss, and defeat a team who finished with plenty of momentum last weekend. No-one expected Robbie Farah to be playing here, but if he does, look out Sharks.

Verdict – Tigers by 2

Result – Sharks 25 defeated Tigers 8

Penrith Panthers vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Panthers Stadium

I'm not sure if the presence of Gus Gould and Joey Johns at Channel Nine has played a part, but it's a shame the last game of the regular season is a meaningless fixture between 10th and 11th. I'm tipping the Panthers at home, because James Maloney is a competitive buggar and he'd like to win before he heads to the Super League in the UK. But who cares really?

Verdict – Panthers by 1

Result – Panthers 54 defeated Knights 10

Wally Lewis - round twenty five selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or Thursday morning

  • Rabbitohs vs ROOSTERS
  • EELS vs Sea Eagles
  • STORM vs Cowboys
  • RAIDERS vs Warriors
  • Bulldogs vs BRONCOS
  • Titans vs DRAGONS
  • Tigers vs SHARKS
  • PANTHERS vs Knights

They probably were the only ones Mary, and for the strangest reason. First half of the season, freaked put by the Logo, second half of the season, they love the Logo? Who knows what is in the minds of mice and men??

Hey Steel
Didn't see the game or any reports but a win is a win. I know Ricky rested a few but your clubs depth comes from who backs up when players are injured or rested. Coaches are wily characters and Ricky is one of the best. The win for your guys maybe won't help much but it's got to be nice to end the season with a win.
Go the Warriors in 2020.

Big Pete I know what it is like especially in the bush residents all ban together in times of need it is just the done thing you don't want to see your own place going up in flames or anyone else's for that matter & especially in places like lithgow & bathurst even the mountains the flames would just tear straight through there & all the wind we had today wouldn't have helped at all, got to feel sorry for the firery that got burnt I bet they would be in a bad way it is a shame they were just trying to help & now they are fighting for there life ,stay off the computer it is no good for your new eyes to be on there too long & how is your wife going now ok I hope say hello & speak again before it is all over...

Thinker do we have any up date on Ian Schubert if they were successful or not with his operation or did they have to remove his foot from that accident he had on Father's Day I haven't heard any more about it my father asked me if there had been any more up date on it ...

Steel Panther's picture

Hey Mark

Call me cynical but a win in Round 25 against a team resting a few players provides me with little comfort. Warriors have celebrated their 25th season with their worst home season ever with only 3 home wins from 10.

Just finished watching your lacklustre Broncos taken to the sword by the Dogs. Not ideal form to take into the finals but at least you're there!! Good luck

Christine - Shuey has had two surgery ops and might just get through without amputation. The car that ran into him was reversing from their driveway (last Sunday) and jammed into his ankle severing two major tendons, or something along those lines. The woman driving the car, has since been charged with neg driving.

Ian Schubert was another of those lads who came to Easts RLFC, from Wauchope. The late Jack Gibson, I recall had horse interests there as well. Shuey is currently in-house Eastern Suburbs salary cap auditor. He was formerly that with NRL and left the position in 2013. I saw the first grand final he played with Chooks in, back in 1975 when coached by the legendary Jack Gibson. I seem to recall Shuey played fullback when Russell Fairfax broke his leg. Shuey also had a season with my lads Manly over on the Nth Shore back around 1982/83'ish.

Cheers and hope this helps - Big Pete

Christine - all ok now at home. Wife working two days a week now.
She sure was a glutton for punishment though, after what she went through.
We'll speak again. I'll go watch the remainder of this 2nd half of Drags v Tits.
Cheers - Big Pete

Baggy_Gee's picture

Tell you, if the dragons get up that puts the girls 5/6 only missing the eels game.

christine 's picture

Big pete
With Ian Schubert it was the two main arteries they had to re-attach or they may have to amputate , I know it was a 7-8 hour op they were concerned they might have too amputate if they were not successful with re-attaching the two main arteries but I hadn't heard any more on it since then if you do find out more keep me posted big pete talk to you again soon ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Going around the twist here, if the Knights come back, the Girls get 7/8 and I get 3/8, otherwise its 4/8 for me and 6/8 for them.
https://youtu.be/MEMvGtnI7No

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Chris - correct there miss, arteries not tendons.
Haven't been able to find out anything new, but was told that back in June, Royce Ayliffe had a massive stroke.

In our tipping here, I see where Jack Starky made a big run home with 6 winners. Footy Chick got 4 along with Mary S and Tiger Girl got 5.
I got 3 and the worst I've tipped since Round 1. Big letdown the way some teams played, as I feel they were more interested in where they finished on the ladder, prior to semi's/finals.

Cheers - I'll push on, speak during the week - Big Pete

Steel Panther's picture

Hi Big Pete,

Trust you are well sir. Unlike last season you've got your mileage out of Manly in 2019 as I know you tip them every week regardless. Good luck for the coming weeks. Footy Chick is hard to beat. Just look at the Honours Board. Most frequent name there!!
Stay well from a very wet Auckland. If only I could send you some much needed rain...it would be my pleasure.

christine 's picture

What is every ones opinion on the eye gouge from the raiders player in the game against warriors on the weekend ? How long do you think he will get for it ?...

christine 's picture

they have found asbestos on the hill at lotto and so finals tickets have been suspended read the article at the bottom of this page on it ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Well how else do you keep all other supporters out of buying ticket @ the fortress?

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Steely, as well as can be mate.
A couple of times I've tipped against them, where it is logic of the win.
We'll need more than luck, as the injuries have hit us for a sixer, this late in season. Yes, I've been keeping Footy Chick and Tiger Girl in close view, along with Jack Starky, Tide Head & Butcher. This season, anyway. Its been a test and real competition, from those who don't post or much of.
We could do with the water, then the bloody wind blows so hard that it's dry again. You never know Steely, it might be more than water we'd be pleased to exchange some day. Something in a large glass, enjoyed over a good long chat.

A-League nearing, as is Bx 1000.

Cheers and keep well - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Now, now B G.
It'll be The Two Beaches doing battle. I said Beaches mate.

Cronulla's on last days for Gal, anythings a plus for Manly, but if it goes like it did against The Slippery's, Sharks will have it.
Reminds me of a couple of seasons ago against Penrith.
Similar might be the fate with a Souffs/Chooks rematch.

Take a tip from the girls (daughters). Birdies might be on a wing and a prayer.

Cheers Old Son, have a good week and keep well - Big Pete

Baggy_Gee's picture

I think that they'll get over the line at home, I'm going to back them in as the sharks only learnt to kick conversions for 20 minutes to sink the tigers. Hoping for four good clean 13-on-13 games this weekend coming.

christine 's picture

So next question do they kick titans out of the comp ?

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans

I have updated the final NRL ladder for the season and the tipping comp after round 25.

In a difficult round (for me at least) the top score was 6 from 8. Quite a few of you managed that including Jack Starky who has shaken up the top three and keeping it nice and interesting at the top. Footy Chick, Big Pete and Jack look like our prize winners for 2019 unless someone pulls out some hail mary tipping from here.

Note that we do tip through the finals series (not all tipping comps do) so we won't have our final results until after the grand final.

My little helper is crunching some cogs in the back end to update the tipping comp with our games for finals week one. We will have the tipping page published for this weekend as soon as possible.

Any questions just ask, and if anyone thinks I've made a mistake with the scoring please let me know.

All the best

The Thinker

@christine

I have no more details on Ian Schubert. His second surgery went better than the first...so everyone is hoping they can save his leg.

I'm going to publish an article in the lounge section on this site regarding NRL and expansion (or not expanding). We might discuss the Titans and everyone else over there.

BigPeteBx's picture

B G - I hope the same mate with matches, without Bunker or Refs deciding a match, through being incompetent with their decisions.
I'm sure though, that KFC will come out in front - again.
I'll hang out to see the team selections/make-ups.

Have a good week - Big Pete

Baggy_Gee's picture

I think that KFC are upset that the refs are starting to make calls without the bunker. They are sending up simple simple things that even the commentators are mocking them for.

EsraStar's picture

Well done Footy chick for being the minor premier.

Hi Mr Thinker,
Manyana had her tips in the comments (see below) and have not been included as yet.
Cheers,
Mary

My apologies Thinker, I'm still under the weather with the flu and I seem to have cotton wool in my head. Too late for the tipping, but here are the teams that I would have tipped.
Rabbits
Eels
Storm
Raiders
Broncos
Dragons
Sharks
Panthers
Good luck to everyone. manyana.

The Thinker's picture

Thanks for that Mary....I will update.

All the best

@Manyana

I hope you get well soon. I can't include your Rabbitohs tip as your post is after the kick-off but I will add the rest.

manyana's picture

Thanks Mary S for pointing out that my tips were in the comments but not included, but I was not too well with the flu, and I didn't get them in on time. I didn't expect them to be included. Thanks for pointing it out to the Thinker for me, but I'm resigned to them not being included. I will make sure that they are in on time this week. Thank you for caring.
Cheers manyana.

Thanks Thinker, most appreciated. Thanks again Mary S

Hi Christine and others interested.
The talk is the NRL are thinking of moving or dropping one of 3 teams.
Titans, Manly and Sharks have been mentioned. Are they kidding?
The 3 clubs mentioned are not doing so well financially but could you seriously move or drop Manly or Sharks? There would be a riot.
The Gold Coast has been a graveyard for NRL teams over the years, so move the license to Brisbane as a second team or move it to Central QLD (a rugby league heartland) and leave Manly & Sharks alone.
The Gold Coast is a holiday destination and while it boasts a population of around 600,000 they don't seem too interested in football.
Have a look at the AFL Suns, poor crowds and poor performance.
Also how would we cope with the draw if NRL only had 15 teams.
Move the Titans to Rockhampton and call them the Rockhampton Rockets. In honour of our favourite QLD tipster "rocket ryan"

a's picture

Yes I think they should move Titans to Central QLD

christine 's picture

Yes but robina has the centre of excellence & lotto land has asbestos in the hill so go figure it won't be Cronulla if paul gallen has things his way ...

When Storm were caught rorting the cap to the extreme and playing the other teams and their fans for fools, they should have been kicked out there and then and never let back in.

christine 's picture

anonymous
I have said it before but I will say it again storm are a protected species they don't have rules or limits they do what they like & they get away with it too I saw one game probably 4 - 5 years ago now at parra stadium they were playing eels & eels were about to be awarded a penalty & billy slater went over to the ref & had a quiet word to the ref which got the penalty awarded to them instead & it was obvious to everyone it clearly was not a storm penalty & why is billy having a word to the ref anyway he was not captain , the other team I say is also a protected species this won't win me any favourites here but roosters used to be as bad as storm sorry newbie but they were storm & roosters got away with more things other teams wouldn't & we all know storm were the first team to introduce a wrestling coach to have an advantage over other teams no wonder things happen like it did to alex mc kinnon , the nrl has changed the game so much from what it was when I was a teenager for those of you who don't know I am in my later 40's it was considered if you didn't bleed you weren't playing they always had biff it was expected they sold beer at games & even if there was a fight during a game some in the crowd may have joined in as well but that debarcle with that game between manly & storm in Melbourne when 6 players got sin binned & walker got a fractured eye socket & then players who were binned for 10 came back on before there 10 minutes were up was ridiculous the nrl has changed the rules so much they have forgotten there own rules I say bring back the biff & let the game continue yes having all these cameras is helping the game but get rid of that bloody bunker if I see another kfc moment I am going to throw up ...

christine 's picture

Infact I am going to make a few more people un happy with me for saying this but what have I got to loose if the nrl want to make it more family friendly kick bulldogs out of the comp they have the worst fan base of any team in the comp if there team looses there fans riot the police are always present at any bulldogs game especially when they play against souths the fans start a riot when there team looses they destroy trains leaving the stadiums they throw things at refs & break the refs arm they urinate on people in the stands how uncivilised is that so every bulldogs fan out there prove me wrong I dare you I have seen it at a souths game when bulldogs lost playing souths they trashed the stadium they trashed the trains leaving the stadium they just cause chaos they would be the most uncivilised team in the comp for there fan base ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

The way to strengthen the game is more weekend games, during the day, at smaller more personal grounds. Did you see the atmosphere at Tigers v Sharks? Had them packed to the rafters and it was great, only need a few big stadiums, ANZ for only GF, Suncorp, Bankwest, and go back to the roots and the people. Lower ticket prices and food costs, make it a full day out for a family with kids, engage with the supporters more and the T.v less.

Anonymous's picture

... BankWest Sunday arvo sudden death semi ?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Perfect example of the idea. Its at a time when you can still have the kids home and in bed at a sensible hour, if you want to watch you can have your mates around, BBQ and enjoy the game, be ready for work Monday. It's a win all round. Thursday night is a horrible time as who wants to drag tired stroppy kids home from the game after 10pm, and then function the next day at work?
The BOYS owe the Bronco's for round 24, we are at home, we beat Manly well, so should be a cracking game if the ref's let the 34 men on the field sort it out between them. We watch the game for our team to show what they can do, not what 4 guys who weren't good enough to play take center stage.

mark ashford's picture

Anon
If they kicked out everyone who rorted the cap, we wouldn't have a comp at all. Yes Storm were very very bad but they did pay heavily for it. Stripped of 2 premierships and a $mill fine. By the way it would be interesting to hear which team you support.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
I'm sure most fans support your sentiments. Unfortunately with #9 & Fox supplying most of the money we're controlled by them.
Surely there's a genius at the NRL who can propose a scheduling that suits the fans and the money men.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I know Mark, it's the same as advertising, got to keep the corporates happy. Need to know how to get into a club as the cap manager and climb the rungs, see if you can make changes that improve the game in spite of itself. Are the Broncos looking for recruitment people after this season?

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
The Broncs have two major problems. Milford is on a $mill deal as is Jack Bird. Milf is trying his best whereas Bird has only played a handful of games due to injury. I think the Broncs will bow out this weekend against your Eels. Katony Staggs is on $180,000 and needs to be upgraded as he is becoming a superstar as are a few others on low pay.
Wouldn't want to be a recruiter and try and balance the cap.
Good luck to your boys this weekend.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I have a plan. And parra is sadly to far away, and the wife won't allow me to live in Sydney unless I'm earning $500,000+ a year.

Anonymous's picture

Make all players sign 12-month contracts. Clubs would know each year where they were at and could never break the cap. Good form / as well as poor form all just gets factored into how the club spends its cap the next year on its players. Use of the draft for any players off-contract wanting to offer themselves up in a showcase NFL-style gala event thru the off-season. Depending on how shrewdly each club spends on the bulk of their team determines how much they can spend draft night. Mismanagement of the salary cap akin to a bad player at the SuperCoach game. Conversely, good SuperCoach players in line to be head-hunted for the recruitment nous. All just pies in the sky of course.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I don't mind that. The only problem I have with that is what does Parra do with Mitchell Moses if other teams throw money at him, there is no ability to plan long term. Also it stops the hilarity of going on to fan websites and see them explode at the thought of long term contracts. RCG is a perfect example, under performing yet on $900,00 give or take, and the Panthers are stuck with him. ROFL. But only a 12 month contract isn't a bad idea. No my idea was aimed at building up a team of locals.

christine's picture

You know it doesn't really matter how we as spectators want the game to be we don't really get any say we are just the idiots that give the nrl money we don't count we don't even get a say & they are surely ruining this great game of ours NRL, Todd Greenberg did what he did to jack debelin because his daughter plays touch football & one of her friends she plays touch football with said to todd Greenberg I don't want anything to do with nrl any more because of what happened with the off season so females are being put off the game because of mad Monday & the things these players get up too it has gone on for years & they did nothing about it before but now his daughters friend says something to Todd Green berg that is suddenly a reason to find someone guilty before they have had there day in court admitidly it doesn't sound good for jack & I am not defending him at all but Greenberg openly admitted publicly that was his reason behind it yes the off season wasn't a good look for the nrl but coaches are always using tactics to get there team to win like they did with souths when they won they were all taken to the playboy mansion if the team won so the coaches encourage it they always have ...

christine's picture

anonymous
It should be once you sign a contract you are bound to that said contract you can't say so many months into your contract I should of got more money I am going to go elsewhere no once you sign it is binding these days there word means nothing & if you didn't like the deal in the first place then why did you sign no one forced you to do so , make them see out there contract learn there lesson that they should be more careful before they sign another one ...

Anonymous's picture

What about performance based contracts. 70 % base-salary and 1 % of contract recouped for each win through the season (24%) and the rest for going further into the finals. A player on 500k may only end up earning 350k + 50k in winning commission in the year, but it was only based on the potential of maximum wins so shouldn’t feel hard done by. Money recouped (not earnt by the player) could go towards new recruits or helping retain local stalwarts.

Baggy_Gee's picture

That i like a lot more, the old country club first grade scheme. $100 if you win, $50 if you lose, and we pay for the booze in the bus on the drive home. There has to be a sweet spot, not to punish fan favourites, but to put enough back into the grass roots to build the game.

christine's picture

but you have to also stop certain teams only getting signatures of good players so no other teams can get them re storm as an example always seems to get the best of the best so no other club can ...
