Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium
If the media are to be believed we have two unhappy camps here, as speculation mounts that two of the most respected coaches in the game are struggling to keep their teams together. In a role where getting sacked seems to happen every other week, Bennett (30 years) and Hasler (13 years) have never lost their job. That speaks volumes. It looks like Hasler is under the most scrutiny at the minute, given the Bulldogs start to the season and that bafflingly poor performance against the Sea Eagles in round four. Perhaps the Bulldogs want to snap up Ivan Cleary before the Tigers get their claws on him. We will wait and see. If the Broncos are unhappy they aren't playing that way, with wins or very narrow losses against the top four teams from 2016. Every game they've been involved in has been the highest quality of rugby league we've seen in the round. They've lost as many games as they've won, but they look like contenders again in 2017. Their best seventeen will take to the field on Thursday, while Matt Frawley slots in for Moses Mbye in the halves for the Dogs. The Dogs failed to trouble the scoreboard attendant against the Sea Eagles and the Broncos are a sterner test than that. If they want Hasler as their coach they'll compete and lose, and if they don't this is a gap job. Des deserves an effort – let's hope we get one.
Verdict – Broncos by 8
Result – Bulldogs 10 defeated Broncos 7
Sydney Roosters vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Allianz Stadium
In the last two weeks the Sea Eagles have scored 66 points and conceded only 8 against competitive opposition. I can't get a read on that form but I can't ignore it either. That said, Friday night is a true test. The Chooks sit at the top of the table, and appear to have regained the swagger that saw the tri-colours win three successive minor premierships. Jake Friend, Blake Ferguson and Kane Evans are named on the extended bench but whether they all make the final seventeen remains to be seen. The tricolours just look too good to me, but we better keep an eye on this game just in case the Sea Eagles are the real deal.
Verdict – Roosters by 4
Result – Sea Eagles 18 defeated Roosters 12
North Queensland Cowboys vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
Jason Tenmillionolo returns for the Cowboys and adds some much-needed beef to the pack. The last time he laced on the boots he ran for 231 metres and played for 87 minutes. He's come a long way from the promising youngster that was good for 10 minute bursts here and there. It sounds like a lot of money, and let's be honest it bl00dy well is, but he's probably worth it. Lachlan Coote is back too, and while his inclusion isn't quite as important, it does complete one of the best spines (1,6,7 and 9) in the NRL. Their last performance at home was one to forget. On Friday night I expect they'll give the people up north a performance to remember.
Verdict – Cowboys by 16
Result – Cowboys 20 defeated Rabbitohs 6
Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium
I fear the Knights have peaked already, and for them peaking was about half a kilometre short of base camp and a long way from the pointy end of Everest. They never looked likely against the Panthers and I'm expecting a very similar result here.
Verdict – Sharks by 30
Result – Sharks 19 defeated Knights 18
Canberra Raiders vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium
Before this season kicked off I spent some time reading tea leaves and poking at the entrails of a small animal, and on the back of that research I predicted that the Eels were a top four team this season. Now I may be sexy and popular with the ladies, but I'm also humble enough to admit that occasionally, once or twice a season, I get things wrong. Perhaps I was poking around inside the wrong animal – that can happen to the best of us. Well I'm not too proud to admit that I am the best of us and I was wrong. The Raiders on the other hand are giving their all, and my top two prediction is still within the realms of possible. Now the Eels may very well give us their best performance this season and if they do they'll be winning and I'll be wrong (again), but until such time as they bring consistent football week in and week out they are making up the numbers. They've fooled me twice...they shan't be fooling me thrice. Now...where did I leave that bandicoot?
Verdict – Raiders by 14
Result – Raiders 30 defeated Eels 18
Melbourne Storm vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – AAMI Park
Plenty of people will be thinking of tipping the Panthers on Saturday night, and I don't blame them for a minute. But there is one important statistic you need to remember above all others – the Panthers have never won a game at AAMI Park. Sure they've been competitive at times, they've even been a touch unlucky a few times, but they never win. Tipping is about finding the winner, so the winner is...
Verdict – Storm by 7
Result – Storm 28 defeated Panthers 6
New Zealand Warriors vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium
Last week I pointed out that Foran was named for the Warriors but almost certainly wouldn't play (and that the Dragons were specials). This weekend he's been named again, and although our potato friend has doubts I'm quite certain he will play this time. That doesn't make the Warriors specials, because they never are, but I am tipping them for once. This is just their second game at Mt Smart for the season, and their first was played in apocalyptic conditions against the Storm. This is easier.
Verdict – Warriors by 10
Result – Warriors 28 defeated Titans 22
Wests Tigers vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
Note the neutral venue tipsters, negating any advantage the Tigers may have gained if this game were taking place at Leichhardt or Campbelltown. The Tigers showed some spirit last start before the ever-professional Storm pulled away when it counted. That was better, but can they repeat the effort, and even then, is that enough? Littlejohn moves into the halves in the absence of Brooks while the Dragons name the same side that won convincingly over the Warriors. If you shop around you can get $1.80 for the Dragons and that's good shopping. Shop responsibly.
Verdict – Dragons by 8
Result – Dragons 28 defeated Tigers 6

Somehow this week, I've done something to upset, although I can't see what that could be. Was it describing 'a' as a techno genius?? (it was a bloody compliment for God's sake. McGyver would be proud).
Just to go through the rules for the 500th time - club rivalry is at the core of this page. Throwing darts at another's team, players, or coach is fine. What you throw often comes back, and its all good fun. Name calling and making judgements on someone's character is not on, although admittedly I do make one exception with Rocket's monicker - who I believe understands our duel is all a bit of fun and he doesn't take me too seriously.
Anyone who considers the stuff said about teams etc to be a personal attack, clearly either do not understand the rules that we all agreed to, or are just not comfortable with them.
I contribute a lot, but does that mean I am taking over?
It's not like I tell others to not to contribute as much.
I support a footy team, but does that mean I should not say so, since it's not everyone's favourite team? Anyone can show support for their team, right?
I am into stats, but does that mean I should not share them because some think that stats are boring? For all the time and effort it takes me to put some of them together, if you really don't care you can just scroll past, yeah?
I have an opinion on footy as well as social matters etc, but does that mean I should keep my opinions to myself because not everyone necessarily feels the same way? Should I not say so, if I do not agree? There really is no such world where everyone agrees on everything. It's a melting pot of views and opinions and we are richer for people expressing different views, than not.
so if I disagree with something said, and then say so, does that mean I think that I am right and the other person is wrong? Of course it does, but doesn't it also mean that the other person thinks they also are right, and that I am wrong - in the very same way? Doesn't everyone think the way they think? believe what they believe? Just a nonsense to say I am any different to anyone else.
The rules of this page have been outlined many (many) a time and contributors need to be comfortable with them.
A few clearly are not, but then making things the way they want it to be, would actually mean they are taking over, not me.

Really Rocket ? There was a movie about a kid using a laptop during a cyclone when the power went out? How weird.

The whole week the Dragons and Warriors were dead-set even in the betting because it was told that Foran was playing. $1.90 a piece. Sometimes the Warriors showing as slight favourite.
If not for Foran's inclusion the odds would rightfully have been Dragons $1.22 Warriors $3.60
So Foran pulls out at the last minute, and no surer thing, the Warriors get belted.
Wouldn't it show as juicy odds for the Dragons? Almost touching $2 for most of the week. Was this a case of players manipulating betting markets? Who's to really know but does remind of Winx being a late scratching from the Queen Elizabeth.
Note Foran has yet again been named to play against the Gold Coast.
The hapless Warriors $1.45 and the Coast $2.75
Is the Foran 'done a fetlock' about to happen two weeks in a row?
Get on the $2.75 if you think so.

I mean the guy hasn't set foot on the field for 10 months.
He gets a twinge in a dodgy hamstring just warming up for his comeback game.
After such a long lay-off and to get this sort of thing happen straight away, that tells me he is a bit of a busted unit, at minimum, not ready to play just a week later.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
I have severe doubts Hasler's Bulldogs will go anywhere near beating the Broncos this week, but there is one avenue for them that could pay dividends.
Milford.
He's widely reported as being a lazy trainer.
To boot, been described as carrying extra kilos.
Put these two things together and logic says he is not fit.
Don't be fooled that he ran past an 8 year old on a pushbike.
It all makes sense that short bursts during the game are fine for him, but no more than that. Hard to know where an 80-minute player successfully hides for much of the game, but he seems to do it.
My theory though is to seek him out. Early and often.
Send the ball along the line to wherever he is defending.
Time after time after time. Make Cyndi Lauper ring in his head.
Won't be too long before he is broken, and you know what they say about a chain being only as strong as it's weakest link.
What say, Desy?
Worth a try?

Coach...you mentioned rules on this site...I can't recall ever seeing any or maybe the Thinker had to make some after you started showing no respect for others opinions. Passion and showing support for your team is great and encouraged but you continually miss the point a growing band of contributors are telling you.
Submitted by Steel Panther on
@ Mark Ashford. Mark you are a long time contributor to this site. Your comments about the game are respected by others who have had a long time association with the great game. Long may your involvement continue.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Not sure who is missing the point.
The rules for behaviour on the site are largely tacit, although I'm sure Thinker has reiterated several times for those with goldfish memories.
A bit of cheeky sledging between contributors week to week when it's not State if Origin season.
Which point am I continually missing?
My thinking is it's you who is not understanding.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
So Panther,
What about my views on the game?
Are my views respected by anyone?
Or would you just be trying to take me down here?
Submitted by christine on
Coach there is a difference between league banter & insulting people saying things like gold fish memories , maybe if you did a bit more banter & not so much insulting things might be so offensive .
Submitted by christine on
That was meant to read not so offensive.
Submitted by Steel Panther on
Coach...I have always respected your views. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I don't. I admire your passion for the game, Penrith and NSW but you often don't show any respect to another contributor's views if it's not the view you share. Disagree by all means but don't belittle by calling someones view b#llshit for example.
This is not about taking you down it's about asking for the reciprocal respect others show you.
Submitted by pabdul on
he can be negative. he can twist your words.his comment lengths can rival war and peace.....but all the good shows you watch has a villian. go by actions not words. if u look at the tipping ladder you will get the last laugh.
Submitted by christine on
pabdul Yeah I agree with you on that but that would be stooping to the same level & I 'm on 20 points so I know i'm doing better than that at least even though I'm usually doing better than that & I have won three comps in the past but as I said that would be stooping to the same level & that's just not me to do so .
Submitted by pabdul on
hi christine im not saying stoop to his level. im saying its a tipping comp so the higher u are is all that matters so dont worry about the negativity
Submitted by Rocket Ryan on
Mark Ashford has coach put you into touch, mate don't run so close to the touchline that is the answer, your a bronco supporter things could be a lot worse you would agree tigerholic I trust, the rest of you stop upsetting coach, When Ivan gets appointed coach of the tigers junior and probably some others will follow, he got a state of origin series to lose, last year it took a week to get him out from under the couch I am worried about him this year, and of the course the panthers look any thing but a premiership threat, so he has a lot on his plate, no wonder he gets so cranky!!!!!!!!!!
Submitted by Christine on
Rocket Ryan off course your so right what was I thinking.

Coach, calling me a "racist pig" for listing the true origins of a bunch of State of Origin legends was a bit over the top. I can only assume that's an example of the kind of thing that is not in the spirit of this website.
But I have nothing against you. Let's just enjoy some friendly banter and enjoy the footy.
