Round five selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

If the media are to be believed we have two unhappy camps here, as speculation mounts that two of the most respected coaches in the game are struggling to keep their teams together. In a role where getting sacked seems to happen every other week, Bennett (30 years) and Hasler (13 years) have never lost their job. That speaks volumes. It looks like Hasler is under the most scrutiny at the minute, given the Bulldogs start to the season and that bafflingly poor performance against the Sea Eagles in round four. Perhaps the Bulldogs want to snap up Ivan Cleary before the Tigers get their claws on him. We will wait and see. If the Broncos are unhappy they aren't playing that way, with wins or very narrow losses against the top four teams from 2016. Every game they've been involved in has been the highest quality of rugby league we've seen in the round. They've lost as many games as they've won, but they look like contenders again in 2017. Their best seventeen will take to the field on Thursday, while Matt Frawley slots in for Moses Mbye in the halves for the Dogs. The Dogs failed to trouble the scoreboard attendant against the Sea Eagles and the Broncos are a sterner test than that. If they want Hasler as their coach they'll compete and lose, and if they don't this is a gap job. Des deserves an effort – let's hope we get one.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Bulldogs 10 defeated Broncos 7

Sydney Roosters vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Allianz Stadium

In the last two weeks the Sea Eagles have scored 66 points and conceded only 8 against competitive opposition. I can't get a read on that form but I can't ignore it either. That said, Friday night is a true test. The Chooks sit at the top of the table, and appear to have regained the swagger that saw the tri-colours win three successive minor premierships. Jake Friend, Blake Ferguson and Kane Evans are named on the extended bench but whether they all make the final seventeen remains to be seen. The tricolours just look too good to me, but we better keep an eye on this game just in case the Sea Eagles are the real deal.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Sea Eagles 18 defeated Roosters 12

North Queensland Cowboys vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

Jason Tenmillionolo returns for the Cowboys and adds some much-needed beef to the pack. The last time he laced on the boots he ran for 231 metres and played for 87 minutes. He's come a long way from the promising youngster that was good for 10 minute bursts here and there. It sounds like a lot of money, and let's be honest it bl00dy well is, but he's probably worth it. Lachlan Coote is back too, and while his inclusion isn't quite as important, it does complete one of the best spines (1,6,7 and 9) in the NRL. Their last performance at home was one to forget. On Friday night I expect they'll give the people up north a performance to remember.

Verdict – Cowboys by 16

Result – Cowboys 20 defeated Rabbitohs 6

Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

I fear the Knights have peaked already, and for them peaking was about half a kilometre short of base camp and a long way from the pointy end of Everest. They never looked likely against the Panthers and I'm expecting a very similar result here.

Verdict – Sharks by 30

Result – Sharks 19 defeated Knights 18

Canberra Raiders vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Before this season kicked off I spent some time reading tea leaves and poking at the entrails of a small animal, and on the back of that research I predicted that the Eels were a top four team this season. Now I may be sexy and popular with the ladies, but I'm also humble enough to admit that occasionally, once or twice a season, I get things wrong. Perhaps I was poking around inside the wrong animal – that can happen to the best of us. Well I'm not too proud to admit that I am the best of us and I was wrong. The Raiders on the other hand are giving their all, and my top two prediction is still within the realms of possible. Now the Eels may very well give us their best performance this season and if they do they'll be winning and I'll be wrong (again), but until such time as they bring consistent football week in and week out they are making up the numbers. They've fooled me twice...they shan't be fooling me thrice. Now...where did I leave that bandicoot?

Verdict – Raiders by 14

Result – Raiders 30 defeated Eels 18

Melbourne Storm vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – AAMI Park

Plenty of people will be thinking of tipping the Panthers on Saturday night, and I don't blame them for a minute. But there is one important statistic you need to remember above all others – the Panthers have never won a game at AAMI Park. Sure they've been competitive at times, they've even been a touch unlucky a few times, but they never win. Tipping is about finding the winner, so the winner is...

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result – Storm 28 defeated Panthers 6

New Zealand Warriors vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Last week I pointed out that Foran was named for the Warriors but almost certainly wouldn't play (and that the Dragons were specials). This weekend he's been named again, and although our potato friend has doubts I'm quite certain he will play this time. That doesn't make the Warriors specials, because they never are, but I am tipping them for once. This is just their second game at Mt Smart for the season, and their first was played in apocalyptic conditions against the Storm. This is easier.

Verdict – Warriors by 10

Result – Warriors 28 defeated Titans 22

Wests Tigers vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Note the neutral venue tipsters, negating any advantage the Tigers may have gained if this game were taking place at Leichhardt or Campbelltown. The Tigers showed some spirit last start before the ever-professional Storm pulled away when it counted. That was better, but can they repeat the effort, and even then, is that enough? Littlejohn moves into the halves in the absence of Brooks while the Dragons name the same side that won convincingly over the Warriors. If you shop around you can get $1.80 for the Dragons and that's good shopping. Shop responsibly.

Verdict – Dragons by 8

Result – Dragons 28 defeated Tigers 6

Wally Lewis - round five selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • ROOSTERS vs Sea Eagles

  • SHARKS vs Knights

  • STORM vs Panthers

Islander, best way to read this, is if the first few lines aren't related to football skip it. If there is football content lock in, especially when Coach is throwing down the stats. There is knowledge there to be tapped.

mark ashford's picture

Coach & Christine.
As far as I'm concerned you both stay.
Only the person who owns this site has the right to ask someone to leave and last time I looked that is Thinker.

Coach Potato's picture

Shit I thought I was doing the admirable thing by asking the people what they want or don't want.

Definitely have people chatting a lot, so that's one positive I'll take credit for.

Johnny A. I will catch and pass you. Rest assured

a's picture

I would never ask people to leave the site Christine and Coach can both stay as Mark said only the Thinker can ask people to leave

pabdul's picture

ah does that mean we're not voting.
just for the record i would of voted the coach in and the manly supporters out. dont spill your chardonnay i was only kidding

Coach Potato's picture

Ok so let me get this straight.

We need to have a vote on whether there should be a vote?!

Vote YES for vote, or NO for no vote.

Come one, come all.
Have your say.
Vote today.

mark ashford's picture

Padbul, no we're not voting.
Coach is an enigma (look that up on your funk & wagnel Coachy)
One day he is full of RL knowledge and the next he is denigrating an original poster who has a major health problem and someone we like to protect. Go Figga!

pabdul's picture

so does that mean the manly supporters are staying?

mark ashford's picture

Coach you are a funny guy.
So you need a vote to stroke your ego.
I think enough has been said.
Lets get back to the football.

mark ashford's picture

FORTRESS
You're back man and welcome.
Manly will be a team to be scared of this season.
As will be the Dragons.
I'm a bit worried about my Broncs, not going so well.
Wayne Bennett's personal life has hurt him big time up here.
I wonder how much of that is affecting the Broncs performance.

mark ashford's picture

Pabdul, you are a funny man...keep it up!

Coach Potato's picture

Here you go pabdul.
Ten years worth of top4 after round 5 and where they were after round 26.

Surely you can't argue with the Roosters playing semis again? With Dragons there too, ANZAC day could be Grand Final replay (replay)

Speaking of years I still can't comprehend the Sharks last week started their 50 year celebrations in their 51st season of footy. Refusing to believe the maths.

If education in this country is a bit of a mess, then The Shire is Pro Hart.

Baggy_Gee's picture

That's ok if the education in the Shire is Pro Hart. Didn't his most iconic mess get sorted out by a small Aussie Company?

pabdul's picture

i have a soft spot for the dragons. i played junior reps there with chris johns and shane flanagan. but they wont be in the top 4 . its just a purple patch

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Christine - u r not going anywhere either. You stay put and continue posting like u are able to do. One love you still have and one love you deserve to remain doing. Thinker site posting and keeping some normal life by communicating in sport banter - NRL/Rugby League if you insist.
Keep well - Big Pete

Coach Potato's picture

Mark, have you considered that I actually treat everyone as equal, disability, illness or otherwise. If I have a go at what Christine says, the same as what Tailspin says, the same as yourself or anyone else, then I am treating you all equally - not the opposite as you continue to suggest.

Fortress's picture

And baggy parra never used the cheque book ur a fair dinkum joke mate worried are we just wait till we play u again lucky to win last year and this year no more !!!!!!!

Coach Potato's picture

padbul noone ever said it means top4.
Top4 after round 5 usually means top8 after round 26 is all.

Semis would be a huge jump in consistency for both Roosters and Dragons. 5th to 8th, they'd both still take that over last year.

BigPeteBx's picture

Mark/Fortress and all - Manly will just take each round as it comes along. No one swallow made a Spring.
What will hit the Broncs, Mark is when SoO arrives, as both Qld and Broncs depend heavily on Broncs players being on the playing register and not injured.
Cheers - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening Pabdul - Flanno also goes back through Sutherland Shire Sharks soccer (football), as his son played rep soccer with them, along with a good mate of mines son. You never know what can add up with players staying fit and off injured list. Now Josh D is a question every match he plays.
Has he walked off injured more times than he's run on?
If not, he's gone down more times than Monica L ever did.

Coach Potato's picture

Manly will have players out like anyone else.
They'll probably be spineless more than a lot of teams Big P. Take the two brothers off the field and how do they go then? That will be the litmus test.

BigPeteBx's picture

Great stuff Coach.
Now that is using your better talents mate and doing what u r really good at.
Bringing out the facts - love it.

BigPeteBx's picture

Manly supporters are always staying here Pabdul. Its just that at times with some, they are treated like outcasts.
No-one asked Chooks to fly off and neither are Eagles.

pabdul's picture

i think the only record dugan will hold is he was the player to go down more than steve matai.

Coach Potato's picture

Big P. Are you auditioning for start on The Footy Show?

pabdul's picture

sorry big fella but i grew up in an era that you go for your team and also the team thats playing manly

BigPeteBx's picture

Coach - its enough voting for inept politicians, so can the voting.
No one is leaving because we are all here for a reason.
Some banter on all NRL and other league, some like me throw the occasional real football topic in, like me.
Some like to just have something to do and have someone to exchange a conversation in the nicest ways they can. Some/most are very patriotic towards one team, like us all. But credit where it is due and to others.
The Thinker site is a great site, lets keep it that way.
Big Pete

Coach Potato's picture

Matai was injjured 50% of the time, acting 50% of the time.
Dugan is injured 40% of the time, acting 60% of the time.
Inglis is injured 30% of the time, acting 70% of the time.
Josh Reynolds is injured 20% of the time, acting 80% of the time.
Darius is injured 10% of the time, acting 90% of the time.

pabdul's picture

forwards do the most work yet they're all backs

BigPeteBx's picture

Thats an early fearless prediction Pabdul.
6th ay!!!!!
I'll see that Fortress keeps that recorded.

pabdul's picture

dont worry the fortress had them higher and i recorded that

BigPeteBx's picture

Good evening Islander and where have you been hibernating.
U r right with that remark about posters.
Some just went into idleness and kept quiet and out of the way of matters. But the past few days/week, its been serious matters and more than idleness.
Hopefully the light is at the end of the tunnel and friendships banter remains.

Keep well mate - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Dont forget Pabdul that Chooks did likewise across the ditch.
Bondi - Kiwis home away from home.

Coach Potato's picture

Backs are the stars.
Stars win the penalties.
Penalties often requires acting.
These are the best of the best.

pabdul's picture

i remember a mate of mine said you hate manly so much I'll give you $100 right now if you shout out i love manly...thinking about it now i could of done with the money.

BigPeteBx's picture

Nah Coachy - happy to remain here and go along for the ride.
Raking it up by the bucketfuls. But I would accompany you along to The Footy Show to challenge David Middleton. I'd even carry your briefcase of thumb drives for you.

BigPeteBx's picture

Aah - another Manly hater to the fore.
We love to be hated. Especially here where there is so few of us.
Remember Pabdul, that Nick Politis and Arko had the same beliefs with the $$$ and player marketing. In those days, they showed how it could be done......no rorts either.

BigPeteBx's picture

Minus the brothers Coach, would be the present test.
But I think Manly recruited more forwards this year and we have players itching to get their chance, that are just waiting in the wings.
Love seeing that name Sironen and Hastings in our ranks. Big boots to fill but given their chances, they will grab at it - and by the throat.

pabdul's picture

so true the old brown paper bag under the table.
i love at manly games the sign saying guess what we hate you too.

pabdul's picture

the good news is that you got hastings and sironen.the bad news is they got their mothers genes

a's picture

Yes Christine as BigPete said keep posting

Fortress's picture

Coach every team will have injuries its part of the game.it's when the injuries happen and how severe that can hurt any club.I love our depth this year I think we can give this comp a real shake we can now more than match it upfront and the mighty eagles are back where they belong, its a long season but I'm going to enjoy the ride.

Big pete yes I have noted what pabdul has been sating but its an opinion and welcome to it pabdul but beware the mighty eagles are soaring and look very nasty and mean so enjoy the footy everyone may the best team win.

Big Pete hoping to catch up with you soon fish and chips at the famous corso and then a tour of the fortress by the one and only fortress eagle mate.

Mark ashford good to hear your in fine voice buddy don't worry the broncos will come good I bet u benmett has a few tricks up his sleeves the wily old fox where is the rocket man miss his posts.

Christine I know u have supported me on this post and I have done the sane for you but what's the use mate use the old addage if u can't beat them join them coach will always be coach and your a strong person speak ur mind keep posting don't go u will be more missed than anyone .

A big cheero to "a" and all the folks up there hope your all safe and well were thinking of you and keep on keeping on.

So from the fortress eagle punt high and follow on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
