Round five selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

If the media are to be believed we have two unhappy camps here, as speculation mounts that two of the most respected coaches in the game are struggling to keep their teams together. In a role where getting sacked seems to happen every other week, Bennett (30 years) and Hasler (13 years) have never lost their job. That speaks volumes. It looks like Hasler is under the most scrutiny at the minute, given the Bulldogs start to the season and that bafflingly poor performance against the Sea Eagles in round four. Perhaps the Bulldogs want to snap up Ivan Cleary before the Tigers get their claws on him. We will wait and see. If the Broncos are unhappy they aren't playing that way, with wins or very narrow losses against the top four teams from 2016. Every game they've been involved in has been the highest quality of rugby league we've seen in the round. They've lost as many games as they've won, but they look like contenders again in 2017. Their best seventeen will take to the field on Thursday, while Matt Frawley slots in for Moses Mbye in the halves for the Dogs. The Dogs failed to trouble the scoreboard attendant against the Sea Eagles and the Broncos are a sterner test than that. If they want Hasler as their coach they'll compete and lose, and if they don't this is a gap job. Des deserves an effort – let's hope we get one.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Bulldogs 10 defeated Broncos 7

Sydney Roosters vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Allianz Stadium

In the last two weeks the Sea Eagles have scored 66 points and conceded only 8 against competitive opposition. I can't get a read on that form but I can't ignore it either. That said, Friday night is a true test. The Chooks sit at the top of the table, and appear to have regained the swagger that saw the tri-colours win three successive minor premierships. Jake Friend, Blake Ferguson and Kane Evans are named on the extended bench but whether they all make the final seventeen remains to be seen. The tricolours just look too good to me, but we better keep an eye on this game just in case the Sea Eagles are the real deal.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Sea Eagles 18 defeated Roosters 12

North Queensland Cowboys vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

Jason Tenmillionolo returns for the Cowboys and adds some much-needed beef to the pack. The last time he laced on the boots he ran for 231 metres and played for 87 minutes. He's come a long way from the promising youngster that was good for 10 minute bursts here and there. It sounds like a lot of money, and let's be honest it bl00dy well is, but he's probably worth it. Lachlan Coote is back too, and while his inclusion isn't quite as important, it does complete one of the best spines (1,6,7 and 9) in the NRL. Their last performance at home was one to forget. On Friday night I expect they'll give the people up north a performance to remember.

Verdict – Cowboys by 16

Result – Cowboys 20 defeated Rabbitohs 6

Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

I fear the Knights have peaked already, and for them peaking was about half a kilometre short of base camp and a long way from the pointy end of Everest. They never looked likely against the Panthers and I'm expecting a very similar result here.

Verdict – Sharks by 30

Result – Sharks 19 defeated Knights 18

Canberra Raiders vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Before this season kicked off I spent some time reading tea leaves and poking at the entrails of a small animal, and on the back of that research I predicted that the Eels were a top four team this season. Now I may be sexy and popular with the ladies, but I'm also humble enough to admit that occasionally, once or twice a season, I get things wrong. Perhaps I was poking around inside the wrong animal – that can happen to the best of us. Well I'm not too proud to admit that I am the best of us and I was wrong. The Raiders on the other hand are giving their all, and my top two prediction is still within the realms of possible. Now the Eels may very well give us their best performance this season and if they do they'll be winning and I'll be wrong (again), but until such time as they bring consistent football week in and week out they are making up the numbers. They've fooled me twice...they shan't be fooling me thrice. Now...where did I leave that bandicoot?

Verdict – Raiders by 14

Result – Raiders 30 defeated Eels 18

Melbourne Storm vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – AAMI Park

Plenty of people will be thinking of tipping the Panthers on Saturday night, and I don't blame them for a minute. But there is one important statistic you need to remember above all others – the Panthers have never won a game at AAMI Park. Sure they've been competitive at times, they've even been a touch unlucky a few times, but they never win. Tipping is about finding the winner, so the winner is...

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result – Storm 28 defeated Panthers 6

New Zealand Warriors vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Last week I pointed out that Foran was named for the Warriors but almost certainly wouldn't play (and that the Dragons were specials). This weekend he's been named again, and although our potato friend has doubts I'm quite certain he will play this time. That doesn't make the Warriors specials, because they never are, but I am tipping them for once. This is just their second game at Mt Smart for the season, and their first was played in apocalyptic conditions against the Storm. This is easier.

Verdict – Warriors by 10

Result – Warriors 28 defeated Titans 22

Wests Tigers vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Note the neutral venue tipsters, negating any advantage the Tigers may have gained if this game were taking place at Leichhardt or Campbelltown. The Tigers showed some spirit last start before the ever-professional Storm pulled away when it counted. That was better, but can they repeat the effort, and even then, is that enough? Littlejohn moves into the halves in the absence of Brooks while the Dragons name the same side that won convincingly over the Warriors. If you shop around you can get $1.80 for the Dragons and that's good shopping. Shop responsibly.

Verdict – Dragons by 8

Result – Dragons 28 defeated Tigers 6

Wally Lewis - round five selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • ROOSTERS vs Sea Eagles
  • COWBOYS vs Rabbitohs
  • SHARKS vs Knights
  • RAIDERS vs Eels
  • STORM vs Panthers

P.S. We all know how minding your own business Mr Coach Potato should be a full time job. But hey I've just got unemployed so what better way than to devote some of my time helping those who are somewhat challenged. Its my gift to you. And humming a few bars of Kumbaya as you go about your daily business, well, can't be a bad thing hey? have a great day Mr Coach Potato. I know I will be enjoying mine at GIO stadium with a triple header on display. Fair DinkumI love footy. Better get me myself psyched... serenity now... serenity now... ahh yes cheers from Mr Awesome

Coach Potato's picture

Hope you find work soon, Mr A.

Try not to think of the next 50 knock-backs as meaning you are unemployable.

Winning jobs are a chook raffle, so keep thinking of it that way.

If you miss out on the chook raffle 50 times, does that mean you will never win? No, it just came down to bad luck.

You will definitely never win if you stop entering chook raffles.

If you keep entering chook raffles, and lots of them, you will eventually win one.

Johnny Awesome's picture

I'm hearing ya, You are a wealth of knowledge Mr Coach Potato,, pity you can't utilise some of it in your tipping. About the job... my boss told me to have a good day, yep, so I went home and the rest is history. I'll check on some of my mates at the local RSL and see how many chooks are in the freezer. Cheers from Mr Awesome

Close to being put away by the Knights. Ohhh what a fun upset that would have been.

Thinker having trouble accessing your website on my computer but not on my phone, when I try to access your website from my computer it comes up website error & you can't access anything at all any suggestions at all there thinker?

mark ashford's picture

Thinker, I have been thinkering about your request to give Coach a break. Why should we???
Coach is the most aggressive poster here and continues to be even after your censure.
I will back off as requested. THE THINKER HAS SPOKEN.
But perhaps Coach is out of control, like a runaway truck.
Causing devastation whenever he posts.
A runaway truck will eventually crash...will it be tonight?

mark ashford's picture

Where are our Manly friends?
You must be happy about how your team is going.
A win over the Chooks must surely rate a YOOHAA or two?
C'mon you guys get on board.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Coach i cant see the 2017 premiers there

Christine 's picture

Have a techno currently working on it Thinker ...

Christine 's picture

Mark all is good penrith lost you can rub it in all you want to but that's what he wants you to do & I wouldn't give coach the satsyfaction mark when you don't rub it in it annoys him even more mark...

mark ashford's picture

Oh Coach a massive flogging of your Panthers by the Storm.
When exactly did Phil the fool Gould predict a premiership from the Panthers? 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, or was it sometime in the unforeseeable future?
You can now eat a little bit of humble pie...maybe.

Coach Potato's picture

No not there in week 5.
I definitely said it was Cartwright at #6 that got them there last year. When he is back, when Mansour is back and they're still not winning people can rubbish all they want.

Far too often Martin plans his next move before he gets the ball. Cartwright waits until the defender makes the first move and then reacts.

Storm would have won without the carve up though. Panthers regain the ball after kicking off 2nd half, get penalised for it, and 6 points down within half a minute. Kind of how it went. When the hell are refs going to get called up for questioning. The Rapana pass to Austin in the other game could definitely be described as 'criminal'.

christine's picture

Mark I meant do just the oppositeto that .

christine's picture

I will just leave it to you guys to sort each other out .

pabdul's picture

hey mr Ashford
panthers had enough tackles in the storms 20 to win 3 games until Alexander geyer & simmons return the April fools team are no hope

Coach Potato's picture

probably right.
who's your team pabs?

pabdul's picture

im a rooster.
i remember turning up to Eastern suburbs trials with a hundred others and jack gibson was sitting in a tennis umpires chair.
his opening quote was alot of you want to tell me what position your playing. so we're heading to run thru the forest..those who run around the trees are backs those who run into the trees are forwards. then with a smirk he said only kidding now show me what u got.

Coach Potato's picture

Love it.
I hope 2003 still burns deeply for you.

pabdul's picture

it does.i was there on that wet night i actually know todd byrnes dad he's a taxi driver
scott sattler will only be remembered for that tackle and being johns son

Coach Potato's picture

Hopefully you were also there for semi week 1, 2014.
That wouldn't have just cut to the bone, would have cut through the bone.

christine's picture

Every time I tried to go on the thinkers website last night I would get a security certificate error message come up & block me but all is good again it's fixed now .

Coach Potato's picture

Fair call Mark.
So let's set stuff in concrete.
You now understand, I trust.
Say what you like about others teams players coach etc.

I "do not" take what you say as a personal attack, so why do you, christine, voyeur, Steel Panther and others think it is when it's me talking??

Just pure hypocrisy if you think there's a difference.

christine's picture

Coach it's because the comments you make are more personal in attack & if you were more careful with your wording then it wouldn't have such an affect on people , i'm not your enemy coach & i'm not against you but sometimes it does hit a nerve over & over again .

pabdul's picture

no..cut to the bone is playing reserves against balmain and getting hit by David grant RIP. being airborne for 5 seconds then playing the ball to the opposition

pabdul's picture

oh by the way our concussion test was the trainer said where are we knowing it was leichhardt..i said wembley..he said close enough

Coach Potato's picture

Hypocrite christine.
Face it.

Coach Potato's picture

What's the damn story with the not-so-ageless Ronnie Palmer? Played for Tigers in the 70s, then trainer for Roosters forever - shunted - trainer for Gold Coast - shunted - trainer for Panthers - shunted - now trainer for Parra.

Is there any doubt that next in this pattern is shunted?

Coach Potato's picture

padbul, that should have been a penalty to the opposition for not getting to your feet to play it.

pabdul's picture

i got to my feet except i played it in the wrong direction.
because of that the trainer knew there was something wrong

a's picture

Good news everyone I have just got Power back on I can comment again thanks to everyone who wished me luck I missed all you guys

Coach Potato's picture

Also a penalty to the opposition.

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Mark A and others that I previously posted to/with.

Us Sea Eagles are about and that win against Roosters was a mighty closing stages effort, especially playing away from Brooky (Lotto/LollyLand). Many were writing Manly off after the first two rounds. Give it some time I said, so the newcomers can blend in and get used to a new coach, who is making a real go of it and testing his combinations. Haven't heard from Fortress Eagle since last season, so don't know where he is, or what he is doing. Maybe getting eyeball therapy at Manly Beach. The opportunity was there for him to email me privately, as Thinker arranged that through his discreet avenues.
That offer is there for you also Mark A, as I have found you to be pretty genuine and like to keep away from crap barrages and exchanges from the past.

Coach "dislikes" Manly, so I rarely played on that, or Penrith with him. Although I do have soft spot for Panthers/Choc Soldiers, especially after Western Division doing them in the first AMCO Cup Final. I have quite a number of close friends who support Penrith and we also have a division of their licensed Panthers Club in Bathurst. Need I have to say that Panthers will be playing Raiders here on Sat 10th June at Carrington Park in NRL Round 14, then closely followed by SoO 2 in Sydney.

I hope all our Nth Qld friends are ok and they didn't have too much cyclone or flood damaged to their properties. I did a blog to all last week and lost the flamin post in waiting for spooler to save it.
Does Thinker site have anywhere where posts go to draft, when online technical issues occur?

@Padbul - I'm trying to figure out, who you really are. I actually thought George Daldry was one of the best trainers on the Sydney scene and both Chooks and Eels had his services, in the past. We had some boys from here go through the East RLFC grades. Paul Dunn also did some time there, along with Souths and Bulldogs. George Rose is one of our local juniors, along with a fellow called Marty Moore and Craig Culnane. All did time at Chooks.

I often think of you Christine with your medical condition. Hang in there and ride the waves as I know how well you do.

I don't post daily here, but when I do, I'll do catch up. Got quite a bit on the plate with local scene, community volunteer/admin work, home, home and errands I don't attend too often because I love me bloggers and reading of and about them and their activities. Plus EPL in UK and this morning Man Utd did themselves no favours in a draw with WBA. Even Chelsea let across the district C/Palace beat them. I'll steer away from that code for now, as much as I like to chat about many sports - it messaged me from a past reading, to stay within the code here. Not conduct either.

Cheers Mark and all others and keep well. We'll speak again.

Pabdul - if my memory serves me, David Grant was playing with Souths then. I had friends who lived in Barrack Heights/Warilla and across the road from him.
My mate worked for NSW Police on bikes at both Batemans Bay and Warilla. He worked in Kogarah with Craig Young and Bruce Starkey many years ago. I did voluntary work with our local Police Boys Club now PCYC. Had a couple of stays at Eastern Suburbs PBC at Paddington/Underwood St......aah the memories.

Further I have written re you in a joint post with Mark A.
Cheers and welcome mate.

Coach I'm no hypocrite I've just been pushed around enough in my life by people like you .

christine's picture

" a '' glad your back & coach how low do you stoop picking on someone with an illness all the time ,you fight your own battle with mark & leave me out of it .

Thanks Christine it sure have been a long time when I seen you people

christine's picture

''a'' did your house get any damage from the cyclone ?

Coach Potato's picture

Noone pushes you around.
That is just fairy tale.
If you aren't ok with people having a niggle at each other, that's your problem to sort out.
Noone else's.

christine's picture

" a " I sore a tweet of titans training gound & the water level is not far below the cross bar of the goal post ...

The Voyeur's picture

Coach since you referenced me early, honestly its the "style" at which you comment on others posts........everyone is entitled to a view/opinion just like you are, but when ever some one does that or comments on a point you have made you tend to strike back at them personally rather than the actual topic.......I think the easiest way to look at this is that it "appears" that there is multiple members telling you this, so surely we can not all be 100% wrong....even if we are only 50% right it should be enough to suggest you might as the Thinker said "play the ball and not the man" so much........any way that's just my view from what I have been watching........Now its kick off time for the Warriors.........and OMG Mr Foran has actually made it through the warm up....... hopefully he can give us some direction and straighten the runners up
