Round five selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

If the media are to be believed we have two unhappy camps here, as speculation mounts that two of the most respected coaches in the game are struggling to keep their teams together. In a role where getting sacked seems to happen every other week, Bennett (30 years) and Hasler (13 years) have never lost their job. That speaks volumes. It looks like Hasler is under the most scrutiny at the minute, given the Bulldogs start to the season and that bafflingly poor performance against the Sea Eagles in round four. Perhaps the Bulldogs want to snap up Ivan Cleary before the Tigers get their claws on him. We will wait and see. If the Broncos are unhappy they aren't playing that way, with wins or very narrow losses against the top four teams from 2016. Every game they've been involved in has been the highest quality of rugby league we've seen in the round. They've lost as many games as they've won, but they look like contenders again in 2017. Their best seventeen will take to the field on Thursday, while Matt Frawley slots in for Moses Mbye in the halves for the Dogs. The Dogs failed to trouble the scoreboard attendant against the Sea Eagles and the Broncos are a sterner test than that. If they want Hasler as their coach they'll compete and lose, and if they don't this is a gap job. Des deserves an effort – let's hope we get one.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Bulldogs 10 defeated Broncos 7

Sydney Roosters vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Allianz Stadium

In the last two weeks the Sea Eagles have scored 66 points and conceded only 8 against competitive opposition. I can't get a read on that form but I can't ignore it either. That said, Friday night is a true test. The Chooks sit at the top of the table, and appear to have regained the swagger that saw the tri-colours win three successive minor premierships. Jake Friend, Blake Ferguson and Kane Evans are named on the extended bench but whether they all make the final seventeen remains to be seen. The tricolours just look too good to me, but we better keep an eye on this game just in case the Sea Eagles are the real deal.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Sea Eagles 18 defeated Roosters 12

North Queensland Cowboys vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

Jason Tenmillionolo returns for the Cowboys and adds some much-needed beef to the pack. The last time he laced on the boots he ran for 231 metres and played for 87 minutes. He's come a long way from the promising youngster that was good for 10 minute bursts here and there. It sounds like a lot of money, and let's be honest it bl00dy well is, but he's probably worth it. Lachlan Coote is back too, and while his inclusion isn't quite as important, it does complete one of the best spines (1,6,7 and 9) in the NRL. Their last performance at home was one to forget. On Friday night I expect they'll give the people up north a performance to remember.

Verdict – Cowboys by 16

Result – Cowboys 20 defeated Rabbitohs 6

Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

I fear the Knights have peaked already, and for them peaking was about half a kilometre short of base camp and a long way from the pointy end of Everest. They never looked likely against the Panthers and I'm expecting a very similar result here.

Verdict – Sharks by 30

Result – Sharks 19 defeated Knights 18

Canberra Raiders vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Before this season kicked off I spent some time reading tea leaves and poking at the entrails of a small animal, and on the back of that research I predicted that the Eels were a top four team this season. Now I may be sexy and popular with the ladies, but I'm also humble enough to admit that occasionally, once or twice a season, I get things wrong. Perhaps I was poking around inside the wrong animal – that can happen to the best of us. Well I'm not too proud to admit that I am the best of us and I was wrong. The Raiders on the other hand are giving their all, and my top two prediction is still within the realms of possible. Now the Eels may very well give us their best performance this season and if they do they'll be winning and I'll be wrong (again), but until such time as they bring consistent football week in and week out they are making up the numbers. They've fooled me twice...they shan't be fooling me thrice. Now...where did I leave that bandicoot?

Verdict – Raiders by 14

Result – Raiders 30 defeated Eels 18

Melbourne Storm vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – AAMI Park

Plenty of people will be thinking of tipping the Panthers on Saturday night, and I don't blame them for a minute. But there is one important statistic you need to remember above all others – the Panthers have never won a game at AAMI Park. Sure they've been competitive at times, they've even been a touch unlucky a few times, but they never win. Tipping is about finding the winner, so the winner is...

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result – Storm 28 defeated Panthers 6

New Zealand Warriors vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Last week I pointed out that Foran was named for the Warriors but almost certainly wouldn't play (and that the Dragons were specials). This weekend he's been named again, and although our potato friend has doubts I'm quite certain he will play this time. That doesn't make the Warriors specials, because they never are, but I am tipping them for once. This is just their second game at Mt Smart for the season, and their first was played in apocalyptic conditions against the Storm. This is easier.

Verdict – Warriors by 10

Result – Warriors 28 defeated Titans 22

Wests Tigers vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Note the neutral venue tipsters, negating any advantage the Tigers may have gained if this game were taking place at Leichhardt or Campbelltown. The Tigers showed some spirit last start before the ever-professional Storm pulled away when it counted. That was better, but can they repeat the effort, and even then, is that enough? Littlejohn moves into the halves in the absence of Brooks while the Dragons name the same side that won convincingly over the Warriors. If you shop around you can get $1.80 for the Dragons and that's good shopping. Shop responsibly.

Verdict – Dragons by 8

Result – Dragons 28 defeated Tigers 6

Wally Lewis - round five selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • Bulldogs vs BRONCOS
  • ROOSTERS vs Sea Eagles
  • COWBOYS vs Rabbitohs
  • SHARKS vs Knights
  • RAIDERS vs Eels
  • STORM vs Panthers
  • WARRIORS vs Titans
  • Tigers vs DRAGONS

Coach lets call a truce before we all get binned & get on with the next round of tipping , that's my suggestion which you can ignore all you like but I strongly suggest you don't because the thinker isn't going to put up with much more of this crap coach ...

pabdul's picture

coach you've just been offered bail and a one way ticket out of Cairo...I'd take it if i was you.

I believe in democracy.
So here you go.
Have your say.
Vote me IN or OUT.

Regular contributors only.

(Blow ins and onetimer trolls you don't get a vote. You don't talk so why would your opinion be considered? If you decide to vote anyway, it just won't count)

There's probably enough to vote me out anyway, so do it.
Who wants to throw the first stone?

Voting closes Thursday kick-off.

Look folks i know its a late post but I have to do this.early last year when I came on the thinker site been a manly supporter I didn't know what to expect maybe to be bagged out maybe to be loved.but I was nervouse at the start but I've always wanted to be myself yes and sometimes been street up and outspoken can get u into hot water, but its OK to be me like everyone should be themselves on this site.we should all be thinking and prating for those people who have lost there lives, there homes there loved ones.and think how lucky mist of us are who have a warm bed and a safe place to stay the cyclone up there is so devastating to all Australians my prayers to you all.this is such a trivial matter compared to that I know when I first came on coach gave as much as I gave but at the end of the day who am I to say he can't stay.when coach talks footy he is at his best and coach that's what your good at OK so for me I vote coach in plus you can't get rid of your arch rival.Christine u are a very strong person never ever give up OK.

So now that's my say good morning from fortress!!!!!!!!!

Some really good games next week starting with Brisbane v Roosters. Gee pressure is on the Broncs. Then you have Penrith v Souths. Penrith will find that one tougher than most expect. Melbourne v Cronulla will be another close one. Match of the round is Manly v my beloved St George. Cheers from Mr Awesome

Johnny Awesome's picture

I agree with your analysis genrally on the top 4 after round 5 making the final 8 Mr Coach Potato. The question is, who will round out the rest of the 8? I feel the Panthers are not handling a favourites tag too well and will have a scattergun approach for a while yet. On the opposite end of the scale we've got the old Manly back loving the underdog tag, with the Bulldogs in tow. Hoping Raiders will have a spot in the 8 so that leaves 3 left. Reckon, Brisbane will have to be there and now that leaves 2. It will be a shootout between Manly, Penrith, Bulldogs, Cronulla, and Souths for those 2 spots. Cheers from Mr Awesome

Yeah this Cyclone we all in now is dangerous as Christine sails let's just get back to footy

Coach Potato's picture

Penrith are nowhere near their last couple of games last year, taking Bulldogs apart piece by piece, then going down in Canberra by 6 in an absolute carve up.

The reasons are pretty simple, different cattle - different combinations.

Mansour and Moylan were on the same wavelength a lot and in combination were tough to defend against.

Cartwright and Cleary were a bit odd couple but worked beautifully. Opposites attract kind of thing. Cleary and Martin play so similar it makes sense they would be easier to defend against.

Then there's Tamou and he's not living up to expectations. Not only that, he is like the Sandow of Parra. Paid so much for him, gotta play him out of form or not.

There's still time to make the 8 but time quickly running out to make the top 4. If cattle doesnt change soon they won't be making the 8

pabdul's picture

exciting times for manly they finally have a five eighth and a hooker who can help dce. long way to go and lack of depth. i have them finishing at best 6th.

Fortress's picture

My top 8 not in order

Mighty eagles
Roosters
Storm
Cowboys
Broncos
Raiders
Panthers
And the 8 the spot to be fought out between the dogs, dragons, sharks, eels, warriors

Its going to be a great year but I feel a suprise grand final let's enjoy the ride folks

Don't agree pabdul manly do have deapth this year look at there bench and the talented youth that's the difference this year they can now match it up front with the other heavy weights .

Good luck everyone round 6 comming up and some huge games.

Fortress hone of the mighty sea eagles

Johnny Awesome's picture

No Dragons Mr Fortress? Cheers from Mr Awesome

pabdul's picture

good on ya fortress. if im still disagreeing with manly supporters then lifes good

Johnny Awesome's picture

That Penrith loss and score line against Melbourne didn't reflect how good Penrith were. It was a ripper of a game and the way Melbourne played, well what can you say, they are a machine. I think Penrith will get better and better Mr Coach Potato but no premiership this year for them. Cheers from Mr Awesome

a's picture

Yes Panthers played alright they will come good against the Rabbitohs

Coach no one has to go it's an nrl website , we can both be on site but keep it civil no one has to be voted off you don't own the website or make the rules .

christine's picture

Before you even say it either do I so don't even waste your time .

christine's picture

I'm done i'm not doing this anymore because of you coach you have to drive people off this website your a fool coach & I want nothing more to do with you ,"a" & mark good luck but I can't do this crap anymore .

christine's picture

If you didn't focus so much on your pathetic stats you might have a better score coach .

christine's picture

Thinker how many people are you going to loose from your website until you do something about coach , he has taken over your website completely you may as well rename it , he abuses people all the time 7 tells them to go else where & you just let him do so well you've lost yet another follower because of a fool like coach .

Doggie's picture

Im voting for Coach to stay. Go the doggies.

christine's picture

Fortress coach didn't even want you on the website when you first came here , I was the one that got you two talking in the first place but you have a short memory , too late now damage is done ...

christine's picture

Voting isn't in the rules it's coach trying to control the website the only person that brings in voting is coach .

a's picture

Christine as fortress said don't give up you have been great Coach just needs to say sorry for the crap his done so Dont Leave Christine

Coach say sorry

Baggy_Gee's picture

You can't compare Sandow and Tamou Coach. Halves get forgiven for a few off games as long as they pull together a brilliant one. Look at DCE last season he was crap, this season he's doing his job of driving the team. Forwards, particularly on big coin have no Lee way, it's perform or you are never trusted again. Hopefully Tamou gets his duck in a line and pulls the metres and tackles his price tag says he should.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Am I missing something here? Is there another forum happening in sync with one? Last comment I heard was Mr Coach Potato giving his views on Penrith and passing on some stats? I don't understand all this anger, he hasn't said anything. Inpersonally love stats, David Middleton was one of my favourites. You'll find in every game of footy stats are used all the way through. Cheers from Mr Awesome

Copy this if you want Christine to stay

Mr Coach Potato, what's your secret in doing your tips? Is it like blind mans buff type scenario, you walking around blindfolded or maybe pin the tip on the donkey game. Could it be just some simple pattern recognition using psychedelic colours. Being a stats man Mr Coach Potato, maybe you are thinking the chances of your tips getting worse couldn't happen? I wouldn't count on that stat ho. C'mon share your wisdom with me so I know what tipping methods not to use. All the best Mr Coach Potato you're ok cheers from Mr Awesome

Thanks thinker for allowing me to be on the site as my home away from home when I need to escape the reality of my illness but I can't do this any more with coach he hasn't let up since the cyclone even started & enough is enough.

Strangely those who left never said so.

Panthers looked ordinary v storm cleary has what looks like second year blues dad appointed coach ot the tigers what price some of these blokes say goodbye to gus and become tigers next year.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Nah I don't see that happening, all the Tigers seen very happy where they are. Same at the Panthers, Cleary might be better with only one voice in his ears, instead of a few all at once. Manly and Dragons of the long gone era both were excellent at training with the cheque book.
