Round five selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

If the media are to be believed we have two unhappy camps here, as speculation mounts that two of the most respected coaches in the game are struggling to keep their teams together. In a role where getting sacked seems to happen every other week, Bennett (30 years) and Hasler (13 years) have never lost their job. That speaks volumes. It looks like Hasler is under the most scrutiny at the minute, given the Bulldogs start to the season and that bafflingly poor performance against the Sea Eagles in round four. Perhaps the Bulldogs want to snap up Ivan Cleary before the Tigers get their claws on him. We will wait and see. If the Broncos are unhappy they aren't playing that way, with wins or very narrow losses against the top four teams from 2016. Every game they've been involved in has been the highest quality of rugby league we've seen in the round. They've lost as many games as they've won, but they look like contenders again in 2017. Their best seventeen will take to the field on Thursday, while Matt Frawley slots in for Moses Mbye in the halves for the Dogs. The Dogs failed to trouble the scoreboard attendant against the Sea Eagles and the Broncos are a sterner test than that. If they want Hasler as their coach they'll compete and lose, and if they don't this is a gap job. Des deserves an effort – let's hope we get one.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Bulldogs 10 defeated Broncos 7

Sydney Roosters vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Allianz Stadium

In the last two weeks the Sea Eagles have scored 66 points and conceded only 8 against competitive opposition. I can't get a read on that form but I can't ignore it either. That said, Friday night is a true test. The Chooks sit at the top of the table, and appear to have regained the swagger that saw the tri-colours win three successive minor premierships. Jake Friend, Blake Ferguson and Kane Evans are named on the extended bench but whether they all make the final seventeen remains to be seen. The tricolours just look too good to me, but we better keep an eye on this game just in case the Sea Eagles are the real deal.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Sea Eagles 18 defeated Roosters 12

North Queensland Cowboys vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

Jason Tenmillionolo returns for the Cowboys and adds some much-needed beef to the pack. The last time he laced on the boots he ran for 231 metres and played for 87 minutes. He's come a long way from the promising youngster that was good for 10 minute bursts here and there. It sounds like a lot of money, and let's be honest it bl00dy well is, but he's probably worth it. Lachlan Coote is back too, and while his inclusion isn't quite as important, it does complete one of the best spines (1,6,7 and 9) in the NRL. Their last performance at home was one to forget. On Friday night I expect they'll give the people up north a performance to remember.

Verdict – Cowboys by 16

Result – Cowboys 20 defeated Rabbitohs 6

Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

I fear the Knights have peaked already, and for them peaking was about half a kilometre short of base camp and a long way from the pointy end of Everest. They never looked likely against the Panthers and I'm expecting a very similar result here.

Verdict – Sharks by 30

Result – Sharks 19 defeated Knights 18

Canberra Raiders vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Before this season kicked off I spent some time reading tea leaves and poking at the entrails of a small animal, and on the back of that research I predicted that the Eels were a top four team this season. Now I may be sexy and popular with the ladies, but I'm also humble enough to admit that occasionally, once or twice a season, I get things wrong. Perhaps I was poking around inside the wrong animal – that can happen to the best of us. Well I'm not too proud to admit that I am the best of us and I was wrong. The Raiders on the other hand are giving their all, and my top two prediction is still within the realms of possible. Now the Eels may very well give us their best performance this season and if they do they'll be winning and I'll be wrong (again), but until such time as they bring consistent football week in and week out they are making up the numbers. They've fooled me twice...they shan't be fooling me thrice. Now...where did I leave that bandicoot?

Verdict – Raiders by 14

Result – Raiders 30 defeated Eels 18

Melbourne Storm vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – AAMI Park

Plenty of people will be thinking of tipping the Panthers on Saturday night, and I don't blame them for a minute. But there is one important statistic you need to remember above all others – the Panthers have never won a game at AAMI Park. Sure they've been competitive at times, they've even been a touch unlucky a few times, but they never win. Tipping is about finding the winner, so the winner is...

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result – Storm 28 defeated Panthers 6

New Zealand Warriors vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Last week I pointed out that Foran was named for the Warriors but almost certainly wouldn't play (and that the Dragons were specials). This weekend he's been named again, and although our potato friend has doubts I'm quite certain he will play this time. That doesn't make the Warriors specials, because they never are, but I am tipping them for once. This is just their second game at Mt Smart for the season, and their first was played in apocalyptic conditions against the Storm. This is easier.

Verdict – Warriors by 10

Result – Warriors 28 defeated Titans 22

Wests Tigers vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Note the neutral venue tipsters, negating any advantage the Tigers may have gained if this game were taking place at Leichhardt or Campbelltown. The Tigers showed some spirit last start before the ever-professional Storm pulled away when it counted. That was better, but can they repeat the effort, and even then, is that enough? Littlejohn moves into the halves in the absence of Brooks while the Dragons name the same side that won convincingly over the Warriors. If you shop around you can get $1.80 for the Dragons and that's good shopping. Shop responsibly.

Verdict – Dragons by 8

Result – Dragons 28 defeated Tigers 6

Wally Lewis - round five selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • Bulldogs vs BRONCOS
  • ROOSTERS vs Sea Eagles
  • COWBOYS vs Rabbitohs
  • SHARKS vs Knights
  • RAIDERS vs Eels
  • STORM vs Panthers
  • WARRIORS vs Titans
  • Tigers vs DRAGONS

You're right Newbie From Perth. It's supposed to be a cartoon drawing of NZ Warrior but cool I guess the thing just doesn't work. Maybe I should just change it back to something more personal like my wedding photo ... ;-D

nola todd's picture

hi to all & the best of luck to you all hope all are safe re cyclone debby
I need some help from you if you would please
my grand son is 8 his first game has been cancelled re cyclone Debby
he so loves his footy, but he is been bullied because of his height but let me tell you he can duck & weave like no bodies business. would you guys let me know off a few players that are short; present & passed that were the greats on the field. its rather hard on the internet to find for nrl but in saying that I am not very savvy

nola todd's picture

love the cardboard wedding photo
all the best

christine's picture

Not to upset anyone on site but I think dogs are a lost course this season , haven't convinced me as yet that they will do any good .

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi Christine,
Wouldn't write the dogs off yet. They are like the Manly of old, bit of mongrel there, they can win, it maybe an ugly win, but a win. Could be an upset against Brisbane if it's a wet track Christine. I'm not braves enough to tip them though I wouldn't be surprised. Cheers from Mr Awesome

Coach Potato's picture

nola, just tell him to tell the bullies that his uncle, the policeman, asked for all their names if there's any more trouble.

Might not work, (but it might).

Coach Potato's picture

Gary and Rhino,
Could we have some British flavour?
Can I ask you both this.
Imagine this was an English Super League site.
What combination of teams would be classed as bitter rivals?

mark ashford's picture

Hi Nola
Coach's offering is good. Would add Darren Lockyer, Andrew Johns, Geoff Toovey and of course many others.
These are all small players who succeeded at the top level
If your "little guy" is getting bullied please talk to the Coach or the club manager as this is not on any more.
Good luck with this and may we see him in a couple of years in the NRL.
Just tell him size isn't everything, speed, and a desire to be at the top will beat the bullies any day.

Coach Potato's picture

Really Mark?
If the little guy is getting bullied, let Coach come to the rescue?

mark ashford's picture

Coach we can agree to disagree on many points.
Lets keep it nice and then I can respect your opinions.
As I would hope you respect mine.
I think Thinker has censured us both so lets agree to be nice.
What say you?

mark ashford's picture

Coach you are a real problem. I tried to offer the olive branch but you come back with this. You have a real problem.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hey Mark, this is one time you read Coach Potato wrong. Seriously he was being kind in a light hearted way, wasn't putting you down. One thing I learnt when the internet came to play was written words do not reflect feelings and can be misconstrued. Cheers all from Mr Awesome

Johnny Awesome's picture

Let's face it Mr Coach Potato, even you would admit you could strut sitting down, I reckon you are pretty honest, though sometimes misguided word wise but hey I reckon I could play poker with you over the phone no probs. You are a bit like the great Tommy R, hearts in the right place but expressing it a touch raw. For all it's worth everyone Mr Coach Potato is a good bloke just rough around the edges, probably start an argument in an empty house but hey let's get on getting on cheers and kind regards from the one and only Mr Awesome

Coach Potato's picture

Mark please read again, (slower).

It was an ironic play on words.
Talking about bullying and turning to Coach to help.

Are you sure Queensland isn't a different planet? Because there is a massive wavelength disconnect.

Baggy_Gee's picture

You know if I'm going to sit down on the couch at least I'm taking the ponies with me.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Love the MILF'S defence. Rock solid.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Nice to see the sandow chip and chase being wheeled out by the ponies. He'll never leave us.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Almost going to call it. The ponies are looking stale.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I do like James Graham, the type of effort is something that fullback for the Broncos lacks.

Johnny Ray's picture

That's it. I'm done. Dogs >:-(

Coach Potato's picture

Well done to voyeur and tigerholic. I know plenty of roughies win in the wet, but they are usually gee-gees, not dish lickers.

More than a bit telling for the Broncos season when they throw their injured star centre out in the wet for 80 minutes. Noone any better than a guy that can't bloody walk?!

Shit. Only 4 weeks til Panthers visit huh? They better find a replacement or two.

Coach Potato's picture

Did Bulldogs claw and paw their way out of the bottom4 for this week? Maybe. Just. Or maybe not.

Titans and NZ below them will earn two points, and then it comes down to whether Canberra beat Parra or not. If the Raiders win, Dogs are all but back to bottom4.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Baloney, the raiders win against the BOYS? The dogs might have a prayer if that is all they need to get out of the dreaded round 5 bottom 4. But I'm interested if tonight we saw their attack click back into gear. The forward bent the line, that new metric of post contact metres was won by the dogs, and Graham lead very well. Always best to have a forward as captain or a half, backs are to far away to be effective motivators

J-Jones's picture

Gentlemen,

After watching that brisbane-cantebury game, I can't help but feel Brisbane will miss the 7 this season, very tough few weeks coming up, and I think if hey lose a couple more than they win they will struggle.

My area was without power in brisbane, and couldn not submit my tips.
however with the remaining games, if this is a suitable way to submit as the link is down, here are the following:

Roosters (8)
Cowboys (14)
Sharks (20)
raiders (8)
Panthers (4)
warriors (14)
Dragons (6)

Steel Panther's picture

Mark...you meant the little fellas coach...not the resident coach on here....CP just picked it up as you meaning him (as a joke) since he's been accused of bullying. You've read this wrong this time....

GaryChesterUK's picture

Hey guys, no joy on the betting front last night, tell you someone who impresses me - Josh Reynolds - good player, plays with passion and seems to care!

Nola Todd - feel for the little guy, the guys here have mentioned a few players, I would also direct him to messi for football, basically a midget but one of the best players ever,

I don't know if you have any near you, but any boxing or martial arts club do amazing things for a little lads confidence, even if we ignore the fact it would help him protect himself if necessary, well worth a try. But the main thing is to show him he is loved and make sure he knows its their issue not his.

Coach - with regards rivalries, the big ones here I would say are Wigan, St Helens and Warrington, they all hate each other, and as with any other sport, everyone hates Leeds (Sorry rhino!).

As for tomorrows game, we go again! Roosters/Cowboys double to win a few quid :)

christine's picture

Newbie just a ? for you when we all get driverless cars do we all still need insurance ???

christine's picture

In regards to bulldogs win last night well that's the way things are for me right now as soon as I say something the opposite happens but i'm still not convinced they will really do any good this year , that win for bulldogs in my opinion was not a reason to say they have turned their season around ...

christine's picture

Johnny ray love the wedding photo can't wait till the kids come along mate ...

Steel Panther's picture

Totally agree with you Christine. You'll note the Thinker has them finishing in lowly 12th place in his pre-season predictions. Time and time again a poor kick on tackle 5. Reynolds seemed to lose his edge after Hodkinson left for the Knights and I don't rate Mbye.

christine's picture

Steel panther Mbye has been reading to much of his own publicity & shouldn't be getting paid anything like the amount he is ...

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi all, just putting this out there regarding Kahu. He picked the ball up after it went only 5m fairdinkum killing Brisbane in the process. I reckon he had either overdrawn from his memory bank or maybe someone should have looksee into some betting trends....Cheers from Mr Awesome

Baggy_Gee's picture

As someone pointed out on the channel 9 commentary last night, and it seems true with some of the stupid brain farts happening, that no one is getting the rules drummed into them. It could just be that, or the Broncos squad had cash on the Dogs to get the win............................. Where is Tim when you need him to throw someone else under the bus?

christine's picture

What were they giving james Roberts last night to keep him in the game , they shouldn't have kept him on .

The Thinker's picture

J-Jones

Glad to hear you are back online. Given the circumstances I will add your tips for the remainder of the round in manually.

All the best

Coach Potato's picture

Steel Panther you got the message wrong too again.

I knew exactly what Mark was saying, I just thought I was kinda funny that the 'coach' is the suggested solution, whereas on this page the coach is the suggested problem.

Noone I hear has taken Thinker to task as yet.
He also thinks it's weird that the mob that gangs up on one person are claiming to be victims.
I wonder why not?

Johnny Awesome's picture

As a casual observer, I can't see anyone ganging up on you Mr Coach Potato. I've seen people expressing themselves in regards to certain comments that's all from yourself and others. I don't think anyone wants anyone to kowtow but using certain words like mob etc doesn't help the situation Mr Coach Potato. Let's practice this instead....serenity now...serenity now... serenity now... gee that felt good. Cheers from Mr Awesome

Coach Potato's picture

Ever thought of casually minding your own business?
I think that would be truly bloody Awesome.

mark ashford's picture

Coach if I misread your "little pun" I apologise.
But it was a serious question and perhaps no joking matter.
Anyway see I'm trying to be nice!
Broncos/Bulldogs not an inspiring game in terrible conditions.
Interesting that Kahu picked up the ball when it should have been a penalty to the Broncs and ended up being a penalty to the Doggies.
GO figga!
Can anyone tell me what the weather is in Sydney tonight?

christine's picture

Mark it showers on & off till Wednesday next week in parts of Sydney ...

Coach Potato's picture

I definitely agree with that. Why wasn't it a Broncos penalty? Yuri Gella couldn't have moved that ball past the 10m. Else why is the 10m rule for the attacking team as well. They're the ones the ball is getting kicked to aren't they? Gonna have to watch that glorious 91 Grand Final again to see where MG took the ball from.

mark ashford's picture

Thank you Christine, so another wet night in Sydney and perhaps more upsets.
Thanks for your support comments. I should be big enough and ugly enough to look after myself but Coach has got under my skin for ages.
After reading many comments here I've gotta grow a thicker skin.
Thanks Chris...hope you are well.

mark ashford's picture

Coach you would think the ref would have called it back (as they often do) and awarded the penalty to the Broncs.
Ha Ha we agree on something!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Whoops Cows/Rabbits has started so I'm off to the tv.
cheers all

Coach Potato's picture

No + the ball had gone at least 111.5m when MG ran onto it.

Thank God for that! Could've changed history.

Coach Potato's picture

11.5 I meanz

Baggy_Gee's picture

That's not a bad drop out Coach, is that 111.5M on the fly

The Thinker's picture

SeaEagle47,

Congratulations you have won a prize...and you may not even realise you were in the running for something.

Your prize is an NRL cap – the choice of team is yours. Can I assume you would like a Manly Sea Eagles on ?
