The off-season 2019-2020

Greetings football fans.

For those of you hoping to stay in touch between now and season 2020...here is the place to do so.

All things sport and anything else for that matter. There won't be a massive number of people around in the off season, but those that are usually pretty good value. I'll drop in from time to time myself, for what it's worth.

All the best.

Sorry guys, was gonna get on last night but Perth had (I’m told this morning) some internet “issues” so couldn’t get on. Will try and get on tonight if they’ve fixed whatever the problem is/was.

Can’t hang around too long, I’m sitting at my desk at work and have been here since 5.30am and seeing as it’s nearly 7am that must be why my tummy’s rumbling. Not enough time right now but looking forward to replying to Mr Ashford, Pete, Markus and Panther on a few things.

One last thing … checked my Westpac account this morning and Newbie if officially “mortgage-free”! Besides the 🐔 goin’ back-to-back, can life get any better? 😁 Cheers y’all…

NuL1F3's picture

Congrats Newbie!! I know the feeling of having a car paid off, a mortgage must feel infinitely better 😁

mark ashford's picture

Steel Panther
Now come on mate we didn't have that much to drink!
I laugh about guys called Snoop-dog doggie dog dog, Tu pack (what's wrong with 6 pack) M & M (whatever) thought that was a little chocolate and those gansta rappers with ridiculous names driving around LA in just as ridiculous cars shooting the crap out of each other.
What about their record label Death Row Records???
As soon as this rubbish is dead I'll be a happy man.
Now behave or I'll ask the rain gods to visit you again.

mark ashford's picture

Newbie
Hope you shouted yourself a brew or two on becoming mortgage free.
it's a real achievement these days of financial stress. I too am mortgage free but know of many that approach retirement still carrying that burden. I seem to remember your ideal retirement or movement into SE Asia somewhere. Hope this realizes your dream. Just remember where ever you end up to keep us Thinker people in mind.

Baggy_Gee's picture

How good were the crowd in PNG vs GBL? They were having a ball in the second half.

If there are any fellow thinkers out there from this website that are in close proximity of these fires please try to keep us updated & keep in contact with the website but above all stay safe , I have been displaced before from a house fire we had to stay in a hotel for 6 weeks living out of suitcases was not fun at all but in some cases you don't even get time to grab your clothes you just have to get out just to stay safe but your all in our thoughts & I really do feel for all of you that have been effected ...

Rant starts here…

Geez I’m starting to get narky! No internet since last Wednesday 13/11 thanks to total and utter ineptitude of NBN 😖 They are utterly and absolutely freakin’ hopeless. Then again, iiNet aren’t much better. Go and check on their website and punch in the postcode and they tell me everything’s fine. Yeah right!

Might have to put up Newbie’s Wednesday Night OSSOTW on Wednesday morning ‘cos the only place I have internet access is at work. Did I tell you I haven’t had any internet since last Wednesday? Oh yeah, I have. Sorry about that.

Can’t wait until I get internet back. I’ll get online and sign up to a “wireless mobile internet” plan and then tether to my laptop. Then I can ditch the NBN and iiNet completely.

Anyhoo peeps, gotta dash as I have bills to pay online so I need to get a wriggle on. I have to do them here at work ‘cos I’ve had no internet since last Wednesday. Oh hang on, I’ve already mentioned that eh. If this wasn’t so annoying I’d laugh 😉

Rant finishes here…

manyana's picture

Hi Newbie, I know exactly how you feel.
The NBN sucks big time!!
I think I was getting something like 0.05 download & 0.02 upload.
I did what you are talking about, ditched the NBN, went totally wireless, no more land line, and no more problems.
Now have 100 gb data & all mobile phone calls & texts are included.
Had to go with a plan, which went against the grain, but when, & If, 5g comes to beautiful Bribie, we'll be able to get it.
Went with Telstra, also against the grain!
The only problem I have now is that I have 7 cordless phones & 2 answering machines sitting gathering dust. LOL.
As they say...don't delay, do it today.
Best of luck, manyana.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Guys
My computer has also s--t itself and I can't reply to emails or do my banking. Booked in tomorrow with my tech to hopefully fix the problem.
If you get this you know where I'm at.

manyana's picture

The joys of modern technology Mark. Hope you get it fixed.
Cheers, manyana.

Remember what we did before we had computers & we survived the youger generation haven't got a clue they have got it too easy these days , on a different note i went to the hemotologist today because i have no immunity on my red cell subsets on my b cells but it is what they call b cell no. 19 so no immunity at all on that particular b cell subset & he told me the easy way to explain it is my treatment for ms is working because i have no immunity on that particular subset because take it as your ms is in your immunity so when i have treatment for my ms it is killing my immunity on my b cell subset no.19 which means my treatment is working because my ms is in my immunity so by killing my immuniry it is killing my ms but remember there is no cure so i just wanted to update you mark let us now When your back in action & with everyone else from this site stay safe everyone & stay out of the firies way & let them do there job ...

Christine 's picture

That meant to read it is killing my immunity so it is killing my ms even though there is no cure for ms & the treafment i havd is called immunotherapy which he said they don't norg use my type of treatment whjcb j knos js only for certain types of ms for starters only 15% of people have my type of ms & there is over 2 million people with ms bug knly 15% have my type ...

Fellow Cowboy fans would you rather Valitine Homes or Lateell Mitchell I say that I want Latrell Mitchell

Christine 's picture

Neither i think latrell played the market & it did not go the way he wanted it has back fired on him he has been reading too much of his own publicity i don't mean too offend anyone by saying that so no one jump down my throat it is just my opinion i think latrell can be a bit troubled if things don't go in his favour thats when you see a different side as yoi do sith alot of people agaon just my opinion ...

Christine 's picture

"a" i also heretigers are going to be makingban offer to latrell as well that is worth more so watch this space latrell is playing his luck on the market ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Take Holmes, he has been out of the environment for a year and a bit, might come back with a clear focus, and to quote the Americans a greater ceiling. That other guy isn't worth his current pay check let alone the $1,000,000 he wants, you can't go missing in games, and get suspended through being brainless and chase the big coin. When did you last see Tedesco, DCE, Cronk face the judicial system. And even though they get shut down but good defence, they still bust themselves trying to get involved in the game.

NuL1F3's picture

Can't we have both? Haha! If I had to choose it would be Holmes all the way, plus he is a Townsville boy.

@Newbie, sorry to hear of your internet woes. I have never had a single issue with the NBN, my experience has been super fast and super reliable. I decided, however, that I wouldn't rub salt into the wound by bragging so I won't mention it... Oh.

I hope you get it all sorted soon mate!

Newbie’s Wednesday Night OSSOTW on Wednesday morning

Every time I see this video it reminds me of when I was in London back in 1985. I think this song was released around 1985 as well. Always good to see Victoria Station, double decker buses, the shops, the fashion of those days, all on the small screen. Also reminds me of time spent walking around Soho and along the Thames. Oh and yeah, all the times we spent drinking “bevvies” in the English pubs. Ah, those were the days 😍

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3j2NYZ8FKs

*UPDATE* Internet Issue
OK, it turns out that surprise, surprise, there’s a NBN "line fault” that’s the cause of my internet drama. Who would’ve thought eh? Just as well I’m a semi-civilised sort of guy otherwise expletives would be flying around left, right and centre. No idea how much longer I have to wait until this shamozzle is fixed but all I can do is wait 😡. Must say however that the support staff at iiNet are fantastic. Talked with them last night and they couldn’t do enough to help me out. Not that any of them are reading this but thanks guys!

@Mary
You’ve got the right idea young lady, love your style 👍. I’m not on Twitter and don’t know if this hashtag even exists but if I was on Twitter I might just be tempted to start something like #theNBNsucksbigtime in honour of what you said above. Yes, as per your advice, I would urge everyone to get away from NBN as soon as possible if at all possible 😖.

@ Christine
If killing your immunity is what it takes to kill your MS then that’s gotta be good eh? Great to hear something is going good for you finally. Keep the faith GF. Yeah, I reckon you’re right with Latrell “playing the market” and coming up (so far) empty-handed. Sad to see him being led astray in this. Oh well, hopefully he’ll “learn” by what eventually happens (or doesn’t).

@ Baggy
Points well said my friend. Agree with your take on the Latrell situation 100%. Cheers.

@ Markus
Ha-Ha! No problems mate. Some people just have a “charmed life” and it seems you’re one of them 😁. No seriously, I always expect that some won’t have NBN problems and some (most) will. Happens in all aspects of life I reckon. It’s all about balance in the Universe bud.

OK peeps, nearly 7am here at work and I’m getting hungry. Bacon, eggs and toast awaits 😋. Cheers y’all…

The Thinker's picture

Holmes vs Mitchell...interesting one

My two cents (and it's worth almost half that) - Holmes is probably the safer bet while Mitchell has more potential upside if it all went well.

You want Mitchell enthused and engaged....when he is he's one of the best in the game, but if he isn't he's almost a liability.

And while he is likely to prefer living in Townsville than in Sydney...he might still get homesick....it's a long drive to Taree.

If Holmes signs he sticks...so you know you have a class fullback (and a player without any off-field misdemeanours) for years to come.

mark ashford's picture

"a"
I'd take Valentine Holmes any day over Latrelle Mitchell. He is a troubled young man who needs a lot of support. As Thinker said Holmes is a solid young man with no obvious problems and could be a huge asset.

mark ashford's picture

Newbie
I feel your pain about the Internet. I'm not on the NBN but use a Telstra Turbo Internet connecter (wifi)
I spent 2 hours and $150 today with my Tech who removed all sorts of nasties from my hard drive. He suggested my turbo stick belonged in a museum and sent me to Telstra for an update to a new wireless modem.
Being almost computer illiterate I did as was told and purchased this little black box which would solve all my problems. At home I spent a couple of hours trying to get the black box to talk to my 3 year old lap top with no success. In frustration I plugged in my geriatric turbo and here I am, responding to emails and talking on Thinker.
No doubt I am doing something wrong but the kids in our Telstra Shop (only phone shop on Bribie) talk so fast and don't take us grey hairs to heart. My phone is with Amaysim and that's all he was interested in, trying to sell me a Telstra deal.
So tomorrow I'm back to the Telstra shop with my laptop and this new devise to see if they can connect it for me.
Will keep you informed if I can.

I was born in England (Portsmouth) but came to AUS as an 18 month baby, not on my own of course but with my migrating family Mum & Dad and 5 kids. I did a solo trip to London in 1985, we may have passed on the street. Met up with an Aussie from Newcastle and a super funny guy from South Africa. We drank heaps of pommie grog in various pubs but weren't made real welcome. A barman suggested an Aussie Pub near the Embankment Station and we were set. Heaps of Aussies, Kiwis and well iced xxxx and Fosters. Great memories, great fun.

I do say this with tounge in cheak : re Latrell if Latrell doesn't get what Latrell wants like most guys it affect is performance ...

NuL1F3's picture

Good evening all.
I love those guys Newbie! That cover of Elvis' is probably my favorite. Thanks for the share 😊

So... I may be over compensating a little but this weeks song should make up for last weeks.... well, the less said the better.

The album this one comes from is my favourite of theirs, the one that followed gets a tad heavy for my taste though they are a heavy band, so be warned.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sTQ0QdkN3Q

Here is a safer version for Newbie and others not brave enough to subject their ears to glorious melodic METAL 😋

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eLbUklzXqI

Mark, I hope you enjoy 🤘

Steel Panther's picture

Nice work NuL1F3......really down my alley music wise. I have a wide taste with a distinct leaning towards the heavier stuff. I too grew up in the 80s and what a decade to be growing up in music-wise.

Metal has the opposite affect on me Newbie......it gets the blood pumping, fires you up and represents energy. I've sampled all types of metal...some I like, some I don't. My favourite band is Iron Maiden closely followed by AC/DC but I enjoy some of the newer metal too!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Thinker change your 2 cents to USD, its worth a lot more AUD than just the 2 cents.

NuL1F3's picture

Hi SP, if I had to choose, I think Seventh Son and Fear of the Dark would be my top favourite albums but yeah, LOVE Iron Maiden! Always a happy trip down memory lane when I listen to them 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed this weeks pick!

mark ashford's picture

Hi Folks
I'm sure you'll all be trembling with excitement when I tell you the little black box is now talking to my computer. It was last night, I just didn't know how to access it. Whereas I used to be able to have a cup of tea waiting for programs to open now I'm struggling with the speed of my equipment (the computer that is).

mark ashford's picture

Newbie, NuLiF3 and Steel.
Being a senior you may be surprised how much I love heavy metal. Always have for as long as I can remember. I was also a fan of the Sex Pistols, (I know it's not metal) totally naughty and poked fun at the establishment. The only thing that leaves me a bit cold is the bands that scream into the mike constantly. You can't understand a word but the guitar and drum work is usually excellent. If I had to say my favourite band of all time (again not metal) would be the Doors. Not sure how to classify their music but I loved it, all of it.

NuL1F3's picture

Favourite Doors song Mark? Hard for me to go passed The End but People are Strange would be another stand out for me. What did you think of Oliver Stone's biopic? I'm feeling I might need to watch it again, Val's portrayal is uncanny!

newbie from perth's picture

Yay! Newbie’s back online 💪. No, I’m not gonna get too confident ‘cos that bloke “Murphy” is lurking around here somewhere…

@ Markus
Glad to hear you’re a fan of the PSBs. So your favourite is their Elvis cover eh? I’m assuming you’re talking about AOMM? If so, yeah, it’s a good one for sure. Much prefer it to the original. Another Elvis cover I prefer to the original is this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUdloUqZa7w

Such a great, great version. Especially love the horns around the 2:50 mark that continue on until around 3:23. This song just melts my heart 💖.

Now, as far as your SOTW goes, well … what can I say? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again … taste is subjective my friend 😉. With due respect, I played through the whole thing and yeah, that “death metal” style of singing doesn’t really do it for me bud. But hey, all that matters is if you enjoy it. Seriously, you (and Steely) should always listen to what YOU like and dang the rest. Now the acoustic version on the other hand wasn’t too bad. Didn’t mind that one actually. Glad you put it up as a comparison. Cheers.

@ Mr Ashford
Your favourite band (Doors) – pretty nice choice mate. I’ve given it some (quick) thought and can’t really say I’d be able to narrow my favourite band down to just one. There’s a few I’d have to lump in together if I was pressed. They’d be The Doobie Brothers, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, UB40, the Doors (of course) and Police.

Anyhoo, better not test my luck with the internet for too much longer, got other things (places) I need to log into so better see if I can.

OK kids, stay well, keep safe and enjoy life 😍 Cheers…

NuL1F3's picture

Good evening Newbie, just about to head to bed but wanted to let you know that there is no death metal style singing in the BFMV song I shared. That style of singing is called 'scream' or 'screamo' but I do understand to you there is probably not much difference haha, though, as a metal fan, it's like comparing apples and oranges 😉
Peace!

newbie from perth's picture

Hey Markus,
So there’s a difference eh? Thanks for the clarification regarding “death metal” and “scream” 🤟. I’m always up for learning something new mon frére.

Hope you got to bed soon after your post and you’re rested up sufficiently for another awesome day in this wonderful world of ours 😍. I’m feeling pretty happy sitting here at work with a coffee, a couple of cream bikkies and listening to some Spandau Ballet 😉. Happy Friday indeed!

P.S. I’ve got next week’s OSSOTW all lined up already. It’s gonna “disappoint” many and have them shaking their heads. Well insofar as asking themselves “how the hell does Newbie like this crap”. Oh the anticipation….🤔

Steel Panther's picture

Newbie,

I've been shaking my head at a lot of your song choices for ages mate..haha. Of your list above, probably only Zeppelin appeal and I absolutely loathe the Doobie Brothers. Each to their own though aye. Now I don't mind SB who came out of the same era as did the Pet Shop Boys in the 80s. Remember ABC, Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls,Tears for Fears and Simple Minds. All great bands from the same time. We were spoilt musically in the 80s. And the don't forget the legendary Cure. To touch on Mark's earlier comments about the Sex Pistols....Punk Rock to me back then meant only one band...The Ramones!!

The Police where big back then too but I never warmed to them. I did see them play a show here in the early 80s and they were disappointing. You know when bands play the songs differently to the record, you know add a lala here and a lala there. Spoils it for me and this is my memory of the Police concert. The other stand out memory was someone lit a flare in the (indoor) venue that night and Sting literally nearly choked to death!!

mark ashford's picture

NuLiF3
I could waffle on for ages about Doors songs. LA Woman was a fav as was Rider on the Rain. Texas Radio got into my head big time but I have to agree The End was probably the zenith of Morrison's career.
Stones movie was (I hope) an accurate portrayal of what the Doors went through including Morrisons descent into alcohol and drugs.
Val Kilmer was excellent as Morrison.

mark ashford's picture

Back to NRL for a bit.
Very happy to see Cam Smith as agreed to play out the final year of his contract. Will be a huge boost for Storm in 2020 and the young players coming through. JWH has resigned with the Chooks for a couple of years and love him or hate him he brings a lot of starch to the Roosters forwards. It may indicate Latrelle is gone but where to? Any ideas anyone?

BigPeteBx's picture

@Newbie
@Mark A
@Steely P

Good evening lads - I mentioned some bands the other night, but all were Aussie ones.
I'll add my threepence worth and say Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Beach Boys, KC & The Sunshine Band.....then The Doors wrap it up for me. Riding on The Rain needs a Storm.
There are others depending how their hits came along.
FYI - Simple Minds have a tour and taking bookings for Australia leg now.

Mark - BTW, if u r having "gizmo" box issues, head over to Avondale, there is a lady there who might also be able to shed some light for you. She is a programs and troubleshooting genius. Buy a steak and then kick the conversation off from there.

I'm just a little slower ATM. Shanks' Pony has torn tendons in ankle.
Keep well as I try to.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Well Mark - if Latrelle's been testing the marking, West Tigers might keep him in Sydney, which is closer to his Taree home.
If it is JWH who is getting under his skin and from one remark made late in finals time last year, I think I'm on the money.
Best Mitchell can do is stay away from The Mouth, who's had his head used as a punching bag, once too often.

Cheers - B P Bx

“Standout Winner” Predictions - EPL Round 13

For those interested (besides Big Pete), Round 12 saw a perfect 2 from 2 “Home” wins so can’t complain about that eh? This week’s selections as follows:

Home Winners
- Arsenal
- Everton

Away Winners
- Liverpool
- Man Utd

Results so far:

Home Teams
Selections - 24
Winners – 16 @ 66.67%

Away Teams
Selections - 7
Winners – 5 @ 71.43%

Internet Question:
Even though I’m now back online, I’m still interested in going mobile home wireless. Just because of “coverage” I’m leaning towards Telstra. Anyone besides young Mary have mobile home wireless? If so, ever had any problems? Looking for any and all advice if you have the time. Not looking for anything spectacular as I’m not into gaming or streaming movies or shows. Just want something reliable, stable and maybe with 25-50Mbps speed. Lastly, cost isn’t a factor. Then again I’m not gonna pay “overs” for something either. Has to be value-for-money or else it’s pointless. Thoughts? Advice?

RE: Latrell
Yeah, think he might (I stress might) end up at the Tigers. Don’t think anyone else wants him or wants to take the risk or has the capacity to spend the money he’s after. I was initially sad about him moving on (love the guy to bits) but have had time to think about this and have come to the conclusion that maybe a move will be the best solution all round. The Roosters will be OK without him and Latrell will be happy with the extra cash. Reckon the only (possible) loser would be the Tigers. Worse case scenario he gets injured and they’ve wasted good money. But hey, footy (just like life in general) is a risk. “Go hard or go home” as they say 💪

OK kids, be good, keep safe and enjoy life 😍 Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

BigPeteBx's picture

Never know Newbie with Spurs and Mourinho at the helm, that could be another away win along with Wolves. They are known to score on the road, so even a draw could be on the menu.

I've taken Newcastle, Leicester & Burnley in draws this round.

Glory and The Smurfs nearing kick-off at yours tonight.

Cheers and keep well - Big Pete

Valitine Homes has just signed with Cowboys

Christine 's picture

Tigers are after latrell but nkw titans are too they are talking about 4 year contract 1 million a year the question is, is latrell really worth it for someone that doesn't play if he doesn't want too ,& yet another player breaking ther contract trying to get more money it is never going to stop the nrl just allows them to keep doing it the nrl wants there fans to be loyalbut there players at said clubs aren't loyal so we are being tacken advantage of if you join a club because of a said plager before the start of a season your not guarenteed the ssid player will still be there at fhe end of the season ...

Mary S's picture

Yes - great news 'a'

Christine 's picture

I think cowboys just avoided a big problem there by not signing latrell , they won't regret it ...

NuL1F3's picture

Good evening to all :)
I have to agree with everyone, I think signing Valentine was the best move for the Cowboys, though I have heard they are still looking at Latrell as an option? I'm sure someone has their wires crossed as I doubt we could even afford an extra water boy after that deal? Rumors have Latrell looking at Gold Coast too? It's a real 'watch this space' scenario, for those who care anyway.

Anyway, that time of the week again, it's hump day diddys and I am hoping my pick will get everyone smiling and ready to tackle these last two days before the weekend! I hope you enjoy.

Newbie’s Wed Night OSSOTW

Not for everyone (actually reckon it’s not for anyone on here if I had to guess) but this gal rocks 🤟. Love what she does (not sure why though) and have done so for many, many years now. Absolute legend but I’m pretty sure no-one will agree 😪. Not exactly a cover version as such, more of a “sampling” you could say.

Spoilers …. the original song was put out around 1973 by a young lady named Ann Peebles and a subsequent version 5 years later by a group whose name is the same as what you see when a volcano gets angry.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHcyJPTTn9w

Geez, Latrell at the Titans? Has the world gone insane? Sometimes you just can’t “buy” your way out of mediocrity, regardless of how much money you throw around. Seriously! You would need structure, a club culture and an actual plan surely. I’m gonna stop now…

Nice share Markus. That brings back some memories. Great song and my feet were a tappin’. Makes me wanna go online and watch the Footrot Flats movie (which I’ve never seen by the way) 😁. Cheers brother.

OK kids, stay well, keep safe and enjoy life 😍 Cheers…

NuL1F3's picture

Hi Newbie, I should have known what I was in for when you said 'sampling' haha. Mate, I really really wanted to watch/listen to the whole thing but I only made it to 1.33 LOL. This is one of my least favourite genres. Actually, I think it is at the bottom for me haha. I guess you deserve a little payback after the metal numbers I've shared 😋

Like you said though, different strokes for different folks hehe.

Haven't seen Footrot Flats?? Surely this is something you will have to amend? Though I'm not sure it has aged well 🤔 At least you enjoyed the tune.

I heard on the radio that Tigers have pulled their offer RE Latrell and that he may end up a Cowboy yet? I can't see it personally. However, I would be excited to see what he could do in blue.

mark ashford's picture

Newbie
You are 100% correct my friend, not my style or on any enjoyment level I could think of. You do have an eclectic range of music and I compliment you for it.
NuLif3
Now that's a song I can sing along with, Dave D and the Footrot dog. Who didn't enjoy this? both the song and the movie, not to mention the cartoon series. Surely one of my all time favs, Murray Ball was a very funny man, almost wept when he hung up his pen. A little question, can anyone tell me the dogs name as I've forgotten.
Steel this is your backyard, an answer please.
While I look forward to both your SOTW I wonder if you could include some Aussie bands, no suggestions, will leave it up to you guys. PLEASE no Darryl Braithwaite or J Farnham.

Steel Panther's picture

Mark,

I'm pretty sure the dog's name is just that....The Dog. I think Murray Ball had a name all ready to go but never ended up introducing it in to the cartoon then got cold feet so just left it.

Newbie,

Sorry mate but I'm voting with NuL1F3 & Mark on that one.

Just about finished reading Jonathan Thurston's book. Its been an enjoyable read but one thing that's surprised me is his drinking which is referenced to many times throughout the book. He definitely enjoyed a beer.
