Round twenty one selections

Sydney Roosters vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – Allianz Stadium

The Roosters won the last three minor premierships in a row, and they've won just three games this season. Their last win was way back in round 13, in atrocious conditions over the Tigers. Other than that they've beaten the team running last and the team running thirteenth. They're not just a shadow of the team they were in seasons past, they're a shadow of a shadow. Dark days indeed. Despite that, you've got to give them a chance on recent form. The Bulldogs only beat them by four points, and the Bulldogs beat the Broncos by 26. The Storm beat them in Melbourne by 16 points, but the Storm beat the Broncos in Brisbane by 42 points. And a 12 point loss to the Sharks isn't a disgrace either. The Broncos, with just two wins from their last eight games, are looking a little shadowy themselves. Thaiday, McGuire, Kahu and Reed are unavailable - that's (technically) four internationals, but the return of Gillett is an important one. I'm far from confident, but we've seen the Broncos with their backs to the wall many times over the years. More often than not, they fight back and find a way. If Waerea-Hargreaves was playing I'd be tipping the Chickens...but he isn't...so I won't.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Roosters 32 defeated Broncos 16

Canterbury Bulldogs vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

These sides met in round 14 where the Bulldogs prevailed 34-16, and the line-ups on Friday night are much the same as they were back then. The Dragons have done little to show me they've improved. Since round 14 they've beaten a reserve grade Storm outfit and the Knights, but they've been dismantled on every other occasion. The Bulldogs were dismantled last week, but the team that dismantled them would have dismantled everybody. More on that later. With a loss here the Dragons can all but plan their trip to Thailand. I can't say the Dragons have been great in 2016, but the effort was there. Effort won't be enough on Friday night. Woof Woof.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 16

Result - Bulldogs 13 defeated Dragons 10

New Zealand Warriors vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Here's something you may not have noticed. The Warriors have lost their last three away games in golden point extra time to the Raiders in Canberra, the Sea Eagles in Perth and the Sharks in Sydney. They'll be happy they're back at Mt Smart where they usually produce their best, including their last two performances at home where they soundly defeated two top eight sides in the Titans and the Broncos. The Panthers are a top eight side currently - a win here and they probably move to seventh, while a loss sees them swapping places with the Warriors. A loss for the Warriors and they could quite easily drop to 11th. These sides played in Christchurch in round 10 where the Warriors started well but were no match for the Panthers in the end. The Warriors record in New Zealand away from Mt Smart is comically bad, so this is more like a real home game for them. That said, if the Panthers hold their form from last week they should prevail again. There are many ways to beat the Warriors (and sometimes they beat themselves). I imagine Nathan Cleary has had a chat to his Dad about a few of those ways.

Verdict – Panthers by 1

Result - Warriors 20 defeated Panthers 16

Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

When you are right 70% of the time you are going to be wrong 30% of the time, and I have a confession to make - I was wrong about Aaron Woods. I had him labelled as a bit of a pudding, probably because he looks like Baloo from The Jungle Book. This season he's racked up triple figures in metres gained every time he has played (including three Origins), and he's doing it the hard way. Three times this season he's run for more than 200 metres, and he was near his best with 183 metres last week. It's on the back of that effort, and the efforts of the lessor known supporting players in the Tigers pack, that the kids in the Tigers backline can perform. The Tigers are unlikely to make the top eight but it's not impossible. The Eels are done. Effort, and the flickering hope of finals football, will get the Tigers home.

Verdict – Tigers by 8

Result - Tigers 23 defeated Eels 8

North Queensland Cowboys vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

While there was plenty of chatter here about the Panthers last week, the Panthers General Manager wrote an article about the Cowboys. Phil Gould described the Cowboys demolition of the Bulldogs as easily the best performance of the season. He described their first half performance as perfect football. That's high praise, and while they take to the field without their most important player they are yet to lose at home all season. In a way the absence of Thurston takes some of the pressure off them in this game. If he were there, and the Storm won, it would be quite a blow. Without him they know they have an ace up their sleeve if these two meet again in the finals (and that's looking likely). It's not often I focus on the wingers, and with good reason, but this game may be the exception that proves the rule. Winterstein isn't the tallest winger in the world and I expect Cooper Cronk to try and isolate him under the high ball. On the other flank Javen Bowen will need to contain Koroibete. The two Fijian wingers have notched up 27 tries for the Storm this season. In a game I'm finding difficult to split their finishing power could be the difference.

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result - Storm 16 defeated Cowboys 8

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

The Bunnies have named a cast of thousands on the bench which should boost the attendance figures at Tumbleweed Stadium this weekend. The red and green have all but given up, and those left in the crowd are rusted-ons that are there through thick and thin. They look thin. The Raiders have the top four in their sights and they deserve a finals berth this season. Well done Ricky Stuart...you cranky b*stard.

Verdict – Raiders by 18

Result - Raiders 54 defeated Rabbitohs 4

Manly Sea Eagles vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Brookvale Oval

Talking about the Knights makes me sad. I simply don't want to talk about it, instead I'll close my eyes and pretend it's 1997.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 32

Result - Sea Eagles 36 defeated Knights 16

Gold Coast Titans vs Cronulla Sharks – Monday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Irrational this may be, but it wouldn't hurt the Sharks to lose a game before the finals series. The Titans are a sneaky hope here, but I have to remind myself of their clash in round six when the Sharks lost both Maloney and Lewis early in the game, and Andrew Fifita in the second half...and they still found a way to win. Finding a way to win has been their thing since round three. Greg Bird returns against his old side, but he's the sort of goofball that will try too hard, overplay his hand, and give away silly penalties. Someone will beat the Sharks eventually, but we may have to wait until they take on a team with a bigger boat.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Titans 18 drew with Sharks 18

Wally Lewis - round twenty-one selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • Roosters vs BRONCOS
  • BULLDOGS vs Dragons
  • Warriors vs PANTHERS
  • Eels vs TIGERS

1997 ARL Grand Final (Newcastle Knights vs Manly Sea Eagles)

tigerholic's picture

Morning Folks
Geez, there is so much debate about what has been or should have been said at press conferences. If teams put more into their 80 minutes on the field rather than the 5 mins in the press conference then maybe the result would be different.

The panthers played a good game yesterday, as Coach says they were in it right til the end and if the Warriors weren't due to win a close one then the Panthers would have snuck home.

Speaking of sneaking home, thats what the Broncos would have done after being smashed by the lowly placed Roosters. Broncos will struggle to make the finals and if they do it will be an early exit.

Before anyone says anything about the Tigers playing finals, I personally don't think we will but "IT IS WHAT IT IS"

Rocket Ryan's picture

Dont worry tigerholic mark and i are just hopeing we know the train has come off the rails but come on you can admit it wasn't it great to see coachy and his team go down in golden point gee it wasn't a grand final now thats painfull i can tell you

Four teams on 22 this morning broncos in trouble last three spots in the eight undecided who wants it more?

fortresseagle's picture

Rocket I believe the broncos will make the 8, they play the drag queens next week and one must admit they won't be a great guide or a bench mark for the broncos but they need a win they do have some tough games but been in 24 I believe 3 wins of the next 6 gives your mob a finals spot.

The eagles at the fortress today how they approach this game will be interesting do they go for the kill because four and against could be a deciding factor in the end, the knights have improved of late but barring a complete collapse by the mighty eagkes I can't see only a massacre if they are seriouse.

I think the eagles should be able to also account for the eels next week which then have them going for 6 in a row against the dogs winnable but not easy.

Speaking if the dogs how on earth that grub josh Reynolds got away with the tripping incident is beyond me it's going to take someone to break there Leg,twist an ankle or worse. Fair dinkum how many times has he been pulled up for this a dog act if I've ever seen one, reports are that the saints could of scored . Can someone tell me one player gets suspended for touching a refs shirt, while one gets off for tripping it's a farce, in the words of pauline hanson PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great afternoon everyone enjoy the footy and go the mighty eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Thinker's picture

Tigerholic,

Very nice...I like that.

The Tigers have got some momentum at the minute, but their run home is tricky. They do play three teams in that battle for the last few spots. That makes it all the more interesting, and makes those games very important. Not only is a win worth the two points, you've stopped another team in contention getting two points.

The Broncos have no momentum - the only thing going for them right now is their ladder position. If they were in 10th place now, and playing the way they are playing....season over.

Coach Potato's picture

Tigerholic, the Tigers are one of the form teams of the comp.
So long as teams continue to fail to take advantage of your wingers defending 20 metres in, you'll probably just keep winning. I know Panthers couldn't seem to work it out, but it won't get missed next time.

a's picture

Yeah we will win next week with or without JT

Coach Potato's picture

Dragons also showed enough in their close loss to the Dogs (a game that could have gone either way), that they will trouble the Broncos defensively. Broncos will need more than two set plays that worked in the past. To have coach and then captain utter the words "It is what it is", is a clear and simple acceptance of failure with no real solution, given they have tried and tried to rectify the situation and nothing , absolutely nothing has changed.

Coach Potato's picture

The most damning thing I've heard from a coach, so damning, it has pervaded into the minds of captain and the rest of the team.

Coach Potato's picture

With Panthers still down two internationals, and a future star, I can't be relieved enough that Griffin never said "It is what it is"

Coach Potato's picture

If anyone wants to know where this all started, it's bragging rights day last week, Panthers take down the Broncos pants at Suncorp, yet no Bronco fan or holder of a soft spot contributor (apart from Mark well done to you), could bring themselves to say well done Penrith, you were better on the night. Even the coaches only say well done to the big name the teams. Get beaten by a smaller club, and we're not fessing up. All good, whether people shut their gobs or not, we all know how the game went.

Calling me a hypocrite for not saying the same to Warriors when both teams finished a tie on the same score after 80 minutes?? That's hardly the same thing. I did say well done to the Warriors, and I was the first to do so.

Coach Potato's picture

Thinker apart from a point win over the Cowboys, you would be hard pushed to say Broncos have beaten anyone of note themselves.
Losing twice to Penrith must show as some sort of failure.

Broncos were 4 seconds away from winning the title last year and Penrith were just as close to taking the Wooden Spoon. One team has fallen and the other is rising.

fortresseagle's picture

Good morning folks,

Welcome to the fortress eagles preview of today's golden eagles day at the mighty fortress brooky,

The golden oldies will march from the leagues club to the fortress.

Then players from the premership winning sides of 1976 and 1996 will be hounored before what I believe will be a capacity crowd.

Then highlights of both grand final wins will be shown on the big screen.

And before kickoff the players of both those grand final triumphs will form a gaurd of hounor as the team runs out for the clash with the knights.

The mighty eagles come into this match with a 3 game winning streak, confidence is sky high and the club look like they have overcome there early season horror injury run and now look on track for a tilt at the finals . With the emergence of tom turbo and jake his brother fast becoming dominate performers , it seems the eagles have some incredible talent at there disposal,
Darcy lassick ,jamie burer and cherry evens have all steped up a gear with the great veteran Lyon combining to great effect with cherry Evans. The forwards lead by vave and taupu aare now starting to produce the goods so there outside backs can weave there magic.

The knights are last on the ladder. But in the last few weeks they have taken both the storm and the raiders to the wire, they are showing great fight the sharks than whacked them but to no real surprise.

With four and against looming as a deciding factor for the finals I expect the mighty eagles to go in for the kill , if they are fair dinkum about playing finals footy this year than these are the games they must win. With a huge crowd expected and the knights only playing for pride , I expect the mighty eagles to dismantle them and romp home ,

For mine it's the mighty eagles
to win there 4th in a row and decimate the knights by 30...........................

A memorable day in store, hope you all enjoy the game ,

This is fortress eagle reporting from the home of the mighty sea eagles the fortress brookvale oval ...................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
If you don't like the way Wayne Bennett presents at press conferences that's your business, but if you want to suggest he is having a cancerous effect on his team you are off the planet.

While he was not at the Broncos this was how they fared each season:

6th, 10th, 3rd, 8th, 12th, 8th

In the three years before he left they were 1st, 8th and 5th. In his first year back they nearly won a premiership and they will probably play finals football again this year.

At the Dragons on his watch they finished 1st, 1st and 5th.....since then 9th, 14th, 11th and 9th.

The Knights made a preliminary final with Bennett, losing to the Premiers....since then 16th and 16th.

He knows what he's doing.

Coach Potato's picture

Teams currently 6 to 12 (still in with a chance at finals) who meet each other in the run home

Rnd 21 - NZ v PEN
Rnd 22 - DRA v BRI, G/C v NZ
Rnd 23 - TIG v G/C
Rnd 24 - PEN v TIG
Rnd 25 - G/C v PEN, NZ v TIG
Rnd 26 - PEN v MAN

These games will be important, as will be the games where teams can manage to take down another from the top 5.
Two wins out of five for Warriors, I wouldn't say they are back but they did get an important win yesterday.

Coach Potato's picture

While not blaming the coach for the team's performance, I am saying that not having a clear answer and not being open and honest about that, is a concern. The Broncos are a club that demand success. As successful as they have been, I wouldn't think the wishy washy excuses will be swallowed by the club hierarchy ad infinitum.

mark ashford's picture

Coach why are you so concerned about what the Broncos and their coach are doing, saying or not saying?
There wouldn't be a team in the comp who would say "no" if Bennett made himself available.
Perhaps you should be more concerned about your Panthers.
In the game against the Warriors they made 13 errors, completed their sets at only 71% and missed 30 tackles.
Making them the 2nd worst team for missed tackles in the comp.
Only the Knights miss more.

Coach Potato's picture

Want exactly perfect footy conditions Mark.
I dont think error stats are something to read much into from that game.

Its about being honest, and big clubs have a tendency to not admit they weren't the better when they lose against a smaller club.

You and Thinker have told me to get over it, so I better do the opposite.

Change of subject coach how's my strategy going now with the couch comp seven from seven & i'm not done yet i've still got sharks , storm , cowboys , bulldogs , broncos , dragons , roosters , & knights still available to me that I can use for my couch comp tips , that's strategy .

mark ashford's picture

Coach your all consuming dislike (I don't like the word hatred) is taking away from what you are.
We all enjoy your stats, your extra comp and your obvious RL knowledge.
Your panthers have beaten my Broncos twice this season the second time convincingly.
Continuing to rub it in earns you nothing.
Are you just a bully Coach?
No one likes bullies.
Your continued rants about Wayne Bennett are becoming boring, tedious and a waste of space on this site.
Talk up your Panthers, talk football, talk finals etc.
Your Coach's record is nothing to write home about but I don't attack him.
This is RL Coach, a hard man's game. We don't praise the winners just promise to beat them next encounter.

christine's picture

To add to the list of teams I still have available to me to use for the couch comp souths but I won't be tipping them .

christine's picture

Mark & coach c'mon call a truce guys enough is enough even though I know it's not serious , play nice please .

mark ashford's picture

Fortress, Eagle Rock and BigPete (and other Manly fans)
Great win by your boys. Forwards unbelievable and DCE on top of his game. No Jamie Lyons or Nate, or Snake didn't matter.
I know it was the Knights but a convincing win...well done to your team.
They will feature in the finals.

mark ashford's picture

Chris I'll play nice if Coach plays nice.
Broncs doing it tough at the moment don't need his continual abuse of a great coach and club.

fortresseagle's picture

The mighty eagles march towards the finals continues thrashing the knights at brooky some stunning try's and great defence.

The knights to there credit tried very hard and came up with some good try's themselves.well done to them maybe better year for them in 2017.

The mighty eagkes win there 4th in a row at the fortress where starting to click and now for the eels I feel could be an even bigger score line next week.

Great job boys keep it up great atmosphere, great day with golden eagles day, great crowd well done to the mighty eagles well done to the whole of the football ball club for a magnificent day at the mighty fortress home of the mighty eagles ,

Soaring high and mighty the mighty sea eaglesssssssssssssss

Coach Potato's picture

Mark, sorry but footy banter :
- can freely include opinions of coaches and players
- can freely include talk about other teams
None of this is attacking or bullying.
Again, you insult me with such accusations.

fortresseagle's picture

Thanks mark a yes a great win still a long way to go we need to take it one week at a time mate.

Good luck to your boys next week surely they will beat the drag em queens though they did play well against the dogs, though you would think the broncs will click very soon .

To big Pete and eagle rocks and all the mighty sea eagles supporters were keeping the dream alive.

Hope everyone is having a great evening.................the fortress eagle of the mighty sea eagles!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Potato's picture

Well done Fortress and the people you share your phone with.
Nothing unexpected so far.
Wins against Souths and Knights were on the cards.
You still need 4 more wins from
Parra
Dogs
Storm
Raiders and
Panthers.
Not saying it can 't be done, but will be super tough.

Hello everyone

Have had a great weekend, started with golf on Friday, golf on Saturday with the Tigers winning and then finished with a 36 hole come today. Also watched the sea eagles take care of Manly.

Have a great week guys

Coach Potato's picture

Not off the top of my head, everyone still tipping the team that plays Newcastle. Will double check. Not sure why you can't check yourself though. I'm not noone's organ grinding monkey.

mark ashford's picture

Coach if I have insulted you then I am happy.
Because you insult my team at almost every post.
Banter is banter and is welcomed
But continued assault is boring don't you think?
Let's see who is at the final dance shall we.

Last One On The Couch - week 7

Everyone's tip received has played and won.

Sorry to Baggy who thought he had tipped but hadn't, and BoozeMaster2000 who was crossing the international date line and wasn't sure what day or time it was.

I need to be fair to everyone, and that means not changing the rules I laid down. I do feel bad, but the best and safest decision is to keep the rules black and white.

You are happy that you have made a judgement against my character based on footy banter? Are you sure?

Coach Potato's picture

If Brisbane is you right bower, I'd hate to see the rest of your hand.

a's picture

Well I still have Broncos Dragons Eels Knights Panthers Rabbitohs Roostsrs Warriors West Tigers to tip

christine's picture

Coach & Mark don't you guys see your fighting a loosing battle , your both get sin bined until finals I've had enough until you apologise to each other & behave .

christine's picture

"a" I'm just trying to break up the fighting between coach & mark by intervening & changing the subject & the teams that I said I still have to tip for the couch comp are the teams I still have to use .

a's picture

Yeah I agree people should behave after all we don't want the site ending up like a Trump vs Cilton debate

christine's picture

"a" Can you really see trump being in charge of weather or not America goes to war against another country ? , That's just crazy be a bit like having coach in charge of making that decision that's a scary thought .

fortresseagle's picture

Yes I agree Christine and cowboy come on coach and mark it's ok fir rivalery I love it but let's all respect I've been gulity of it in the past we all have a some point so boys let's have rivalery let's love our teams sometimes have a go if need be but let's be respectfull.

You win some and you lose some no team wins for ever well expect for the sharks but even they lost at the start of the year.

I love passion and we all are,god help us if the panthers play the broncos in the finals it will be on for young and old.

Let's enjoy the footy this is great stuff the top 8 still undecided riverting stuff every game means something edge of the seat tension and drama let's all embrace the fight for survival and may the better teams win .

Be good everyone have a great night ...........fortress eagle flying high!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a's picture

Yeah I agree Fortress

Coach Potato's picture

Can anyone out there back me up that christine has it wrong.
These are the facts:

# There is discussion. People put forward their own points of view.
# Not every topic people agree on. That is the way of the world.
# People will stand up for what they believe in.
# This is not fighting.
# This is not bullying or attacking.
# It's not easy to build club rivalry and tribalism by being nice to each other

One concession I will make is there is a regular lack of respect from myself and also many others of people's right to have their own opinion.

#Still and all, you have it wrong christine, Disagreement is not fighting.

Coach Potato's picture

Do Labor, Green , Liberal , National guests on Q and A fight with each other, or do they just put forward their own points of view ?

fortresseagle's picture

Thanks cowboy I'm not just saying this but I did too your mob to beat the storm and no shame at all . Scoreless second half one thinks that if jt was there it may of been a different story many times they were pulled down close to the line and jt is the master of broken play very interesting at the moment you would have to say it's a race in three with the sharks the storm and the cowboys but there are some wild cards in the eagles the raiders and the warriors and panthers.

The tigers are playing very well but we have to wait and see of the Robbie farrah vs Taylor dramas affects them but one there day very dangerous.

I havnt left the broncos out mark just something deep down tells me they are going to swing this around no favourite tag anymore some bad losses for there ability , but with players to come back and the master coach to once again have a bearing.

The dogs always a threat but have been up and down have the forwards to do damage.

The panthers extremely talented side very good coach and they play to the siren will be hard to beat if they make the finals

The warriors you just don't know what ur going to get but when they are on well they can cause upsets.

The incredible run of the sharks 15 straight and counting a real chance for a maiden title the thing is can they hold there nerve if they get to the big one .

Hard to win back to back but the cowboys have the team to do it ,no major injuries and a very shrewd coach has them primed

The mighty eagkes have come from no where to now just be one win from the 8. Still a long way to go they should beat the eels but then then the dogs away and the raiders and storm at brooky with there last match against fellow top 8 hopefuls the panthers away it's going to be tough but I have belief in them players back from injuries and still more to come back a real dark horse.

Good luck everyone may the better teams win but of course been an eagle I have to say go the mighty sea eagles !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rocket Ryan's picture

I back you up 100% coach i love the fact we have this banter no quarter given none asked you think mark and i feel bullied christine think again i go after coach tigerholic fortress baggy or anyone no harm meant and in fact would be disappointed if coach did not gloat on football views he has it was his turn saturday night to cop some is all.

tigerholic's picture

Gidday Coach

I support you 100%. There has been no bullying or anything deemed as being personal that I have read. Christine, I am sorry to say that on this occasion there is nothing to back up your concerns, the banter has been based on the footy and all of the different passions shown for an individuals team, there has been nothing for you to be concerned about.

This site thrives on footy banter and I am sure that all of the followers of the site love the way that Coach, myself, Rocket, Mark Ashford, A, Fortress and all of the others take aim at each others team and love of footy.

I like to give more than I cop and I expect for return fire once I post comments, all par for the course.

Cheers, have a great week and may the footy gods look down on the Titans tonight so I can get a perfect round.

christine's picture

To all I never said there was bullying & I never said it was all coach & I also never said it was all mark I am getting sick of only hearing about panthers & broncos , you guys have singled me out so have it to yourselves i'm done no more .

christine's picture

On this occasion guys you all had to be jerks & tigerholic thanks for your support .
