Round twenty one selections

Sydney Roosters vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – Allianz Stadium

The Roosters won the last three minor premierships in a row, and they've won just three games this season. Their last win was way back in round 13, in atrocious conditions over the Tigers. Other than that they've beaten the team running last and the team running thirteenth. They're not just a shadow of the team they were in seasons past, they're a shadow of a shadow. Dark days indeed. Despite that, you've got to give them a chance on recent form. The Bulldogs only beat them by four points, and the Bulldogs beat the Broncos by 26. The Storm beat them in Melbourne by 16 points, but the Storm beat the Broncos in Brisbane by 42 points. And a 12 point loss to the Sharks isn't a disgrace either. The Broncos, with just two wins from their last eight games, are looking a little shadowy themselves. Thaiday, McGuire, Kahu and Reed are unavailable - that's (technically) four internationals, but the return of Gillett is an important one. I'm far from confident, but we've seen the Broncos with their backs to the wall many times over the years. More often than not, they fight back and find a way. If Waerea-Hargreaves was playing I'd be tipping the Chickens...but he isn't...so I won't.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Roosters 32 defeated Broncos 16

Canterbury Bulldogs vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

These sides met in round 14 where the Bulldogs prevailed 34-16, and the line-ups on Friday night are much the same as they were back then. The Dragons have done little to show me they've improved. Since round 14 they've beaten a reserve grade Storm outfit and the Knights, but they've been dismantled on every other occasion. The Bulldogs were dismantled last week, but the team that dismantled them would have dismantled everybody. More on that later. With a loss here the Dragons can all but plan their trip to Thailand. I can't say the Dragons have been great in 2016, but the effort was there. Effort won't be enough on Friday night. Woof Woof.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 16

Result - Bulldogs 13 defeated Dragons 10

New Zealand Warriors vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Here's something you may not have noticed. The Warriors have lost their last three away games in golden point extra time to the Raiders in Canberra, the Sea Eagles in Perth and the Sharks in Sydney. They'll be happy they're back at Mt Smart where they usually produce their best, including their last two performances at home where they soundly defeated two top eight sides in the Titans and the Broncos. The Panthers are a top eight side currently - a win here and they probably move to seventh, while a loss sees them swapping places with the Warriors. A loss for the Warriors and they could quite easily drop to 11th. These sides played in Christchurch in round 10 where the Warriors started well but were no match for the Panthers in the end. The Warriors record in New Zealand away from Mt Smart is comically bad, so this is more like a real home game for them. That said, if the Panthers hold their form from last week they should prevail again. There are many ways to beat the Warriors (and sometimes they beat themselves). I imagine Nathan Cleary has had a chat to his Dad about a few of those ways.

Verdict – Panthers by 1

Result - Warriors 20 defeated Panthers 16

Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

When you are right 70% of the time you are going to be wrong 30% of the time, and I have a confession to make - I was wrong about Aaron Woods. I had him labelled as a bit of a pudding, probably because he looks like Baloo from The Jungle Book. This season he's racked up triple figures in metres gained every time he has played (including three Origins), and he's doing it the hard way. Three times this season he's run for more than 200 metres, and he was near his best with 183 metres last week. It's on the back of that effort, and the efforts of the lessor known supporting players in the Tigers pack, that the kids in the Tigers backline can perform. The Tigers are unlikely to make the top eight but it's not impossible. The Eels are done. Effort, and the flickering hope of finals football, will get the Tigers home.

Verdict – Tigers by 8

Result - Tigers 23 defeated Eels 8

North Queensland Cowboys vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

While there was plenty of chatter here about the Panthers last week, the Panthers General Manager wrote an article about the Cowboys. Phil Gould described the Cowboys demolition of the Bulldogs as easily the best performance of the season. He described their first half performance as perfect football. That's high praise, and while they take to the field without their most important player they are yet to lose at home all season. In a way the absence of Thurston takes some of the pressure off them in this game. If he were there, and the Storm won, it would be quite a blow. Without him they know they have an ace up their sleeve if these two meet again in the finals (and that's looking likely). It's not often I focus on the wingers, and with good reason, but this game may be the exception that proves the rule. Winterstein isn't the tallest winger in the world and I expect Cooper Cronk to try and isolate him under the high ball. On the other flank Javen Bowen will need to contain Koroibete. The two Fijian wingers have notched up 27 tries for the Storm this season. In a game I'm finding difficult to split their finishing power could be the difference.

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result - Storm 16 defeated Cowboys 8

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

The Bunnies have named a cast of thousands on the bench which should boost the attendance figures at Tumbleweed Stadium this weekend. The red and green have all but given up, and those left in the crowd are rusted-ons that are there through thick and thin. They look thin. The Raiders have the top four in their sights and they deserve a finals berth this season. Well done Ricky Stuart...you cranky b*stard.

Verdict – Raiders by 18

Result - Raiders 54 defeated Rabbitohs 4

Manly Sea Eagles vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Brookvale Oval

Talking about the Knights makes me sad. I simply don't want to talk about it, instead I'll close my eyes and pretend it's 1997.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 32

Result - Sea Eagles 36 defeated Knights 16

Gold Coast Titans vs Cronulla Sharks – Monday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Irrational this may be, but it wouldn't hurt the Sharks to lose a game before the finals series. The Titans are a sneaky hope here, but I have to remind myself of their clash in round six when the Sharks lost both Maloney and Lewis early in the game, and Andrew Fifita in the second half...and they still found a way to win. Finding a way to win has been their thing since round three. Greg Bird returns against his old side, but he's the sort of goofball that will try too hard, overplay his hand, and give away silly penalties. Someone will beat the Sharks eventually, but we may have to wait until they take on a team with a bigger boat.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Titans 18 drew with Sharks 18

Wally Lewis - round twenty-one selections (in bold)

Hello,
A quick question. What is this immunity thing that crops up occasionally on the posts? I presume its not related to cooking.
Secondly, finally managed to get on on a stand alone computer but for some reason having trouble getting on the site via my phone.
Lastly, I think this round 21 is one of the toughest rounds to pick. Lastly, I'm behind regarding posts due to the trouble of logging on so if I mention Farah and Jason Taylor and its already been re-hashed don't hold it against me. I think Farah has a very valid case to go to the fair work commission regarding his job at Wests Tigers. His treatment is appalling, and if you were ostracised in any work place like he has been there would have been ramifications against the employer. Its not Farahs fault he got a millions plus contract, he didn't forge the documents, Wests Tigers management signed off on it, and their management record going back to the Tim Sheens days is pretty ordinary. The guy has a contract for 1 and a bit years, let him play it out and clean out the management me thinks. In addition, Jason Taylor might have a smart footy head but he has no people skills and if he is not careful no real loyalty from the other players. I know if i was a player at Wests Tigers I'd be looking over my shoulder wondering if I was next on the chopping block. Cheers everyone from Mr Awesome

Johnny Awesome immunity was just a thing that coach did for one week only which I got .

Johnny Awesome's picture

Mr Thinker,
I very much like this site you manage and would like to be part of the tipping next year [2017]? Is this possible? I know its a premature request, we need to finish 2016 but let me know regardless please?
Cheers from Mr Awesome

Bulldogs vs Dragons round 21. Ok, its not looking good for the Dragons and you don't want to be facing the Bulldogs after their flogging by the Cowboys. In saying that the Dragons have a chance, slim as it may be to beat them. Dragons have a traditional rivalry with the Bulldogs. They say the rivalry may have started in 1967 after the Dragons recorded 11 straight premierships from 1955-1966. Bulldogs put an end to the run when they beat them by 1 point in the preliminary final 1967. Anyway, when these two sides meet, its usually a pretty tough dour affair. The Dragons scoring issues wont be too much of a problem if they can also stop the Bulldogs from scoring. Dragons need to get some mongrel back. However, lets face it, Paul McGregor looks as confused as a cow on synthetic grass and about as useless as a wheelbarrow with rope handles. Whats missing and has been missing since Wayne Bennett left, is the pride in the jumper. Unless Mary he gets his act together in getting those players playing as a team, it could end up being as ugly as my mother-in-law's toenails. Come on Mary, lets have a go, no more excuses. Go the Dragons. Cheers from Mr Awesome.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Johnny awesome sorry to be the one to have tell you dragons have no chance against bulldogs just how itis this week

BoozeMaster2000's picture

Can cowboys beat the storm without Thurston? That is the question.

Doggie's picture

Hey Mr thinker. What happened to my post?

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi Rocket Ryan, the chances are slim indeed but there still is a chance. Here's an interesting stat I read. It was the Bulldogs fourth loss in five games against a current top four team on the ladder. Dragons are not even a top eight side but Bulldogs have got more than a few chinks. Cheers Mr Awesome

Rocket Ryan's picture

Fair enough johnny lets agree on the slim.

christine's picture

It would be good to see ennis go out with a grand final win in my opinion even if he is a grub .

a's picture

Here is the updated ladder for the people in the non tipping competition

Dragonsfan4ever 86

That puts BigPeteBx up by 3 but still anyones game

Good Ennis is retiring just need Gallen to retire with than I will be quite happy to see Sharks win

christine's picture

I would love to see gallen retire he's an even bigger grub than ennis .

fortresseagle's picture

Big Pete did u see Michael McGuire and Sam burguss press conference no praise for manly what so ever and they kept asking others opinions on the game.

Even if the try was awarded we still would of won we smashed th in the first half and gutsy defence in the second half.

Mr mcgiure is a very desperate man what bout the forward passess by souths that were let go no mcgiure we won't talk about that will we sour grapes.

Now for newcasle , and if you look at the draw drag queens ,warriors and the tigrrs all have tough games this is getting very interesting indeed mate.

Chat soon big Pete .

Fortress eagle of the mighty sea eaglesssssssssssssss

Baggy_Gee's picture

Manly will not make the 8, lock it in Eddie.

BigPeteBx's picture

I dont get FOX here Fortress.
Saw a couple in i/views via computer. They probably were that p'd off with the result, why would they give Manly credit. We won the first half and they won the second - simple as that mate and they didnt get enough in the second to win the two comp points.

I looked at the try they are talking about and blaming Bootcamp at The Bunker about. The ball came loose, fresh air and water could have got in there easily.
What is the rule then, as it was slipping (serve himself right for not using two hands) and loose and he's pressed it, like a knock on.

Getting very interesting Fortress, as I said before. We just need to keep winning and not looking beyond week by week. We play Storm at Brooky but Penrith out at The Graveyard.

You might have to meet up with Coach and take him to the club and whack a few into him, so he's laughing and not crying, when you both sit together.

Coach Potato's picture

It's an annual event, talking up the chances of teams that haven't even won 50% of their games so far, but then somehow mathematically could win 80%+ of games remaining and play finals.

Teams that need to virtually double their quota of wins in the last 6 weeks, seems a bit unlikely.

Teams like East's and Souths were still fancying their chances a few weeks back because they too could win every game and still make it. We see where they will be In September a few weeks on now don't we. Was it only two years ago the top 4 was East's, Manly, Souths, Penrith?

fortresseagle's picture

Partamatta the rorters took foren under false pretences rorted the system the whole place in on it up to thee necks now they want everyone to feel sorry for them stiff cheddar.

At least we have a chance the jelousy and hatred continues it really hurts parra but I would say is what's the matter parramatta.

We have Newcastle at brooky watch for a massacre than the rorters at Piretek yes very interesting indeed other teams above us have tougher draws.

Big Pete the hate continues but us manly boys love it we don't care.

Go you mighty sea eagles go get em boys ........mighty and proud !!!!!!!!!!!!!

fortresseagle's picture

Parra won't make the 8 lock it in Eddie haaaaaaaahaaaaaaaa

The fortress eagle of the mighty sea eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Potato's picture

Fortress, if Foran had not left then wouldn't his gambling, his personal and mental health issues, and his injuries just be Manly's problem now?

Rocket Ryan's picture

Panthers still $2.25 coach don't sportsbet know you tipped them for the flag

EagleROCKS's picture

yes true coach lots of baggage, but thats where he played his best football the best half 5/8th combo with cherry evans if we had him we would be challenging for the title for sure.

i mean we have someone on here saying we wont make the 8,yet his team rorted the comp and all at the club knew what was goin on
maybe he should worry bout his wrecked club, instead bout worrying bout others.

at least we have a chance what chance does parramatta have i ask you.

the thing that gets under my skin is that this was no small rort on par with the cheats from melborne and the bulldogs or even worse ,they do this than the media and bleeding hearts want all of us to feel sorry,it doesnt matter what club does it the deserve the full fury of the law and other supporters of clubs,i mean paying players in the car park do you mind.

fair dinks we have a chance and they dont thats the bottom line, the fact they were caught cheating they want to take other clubs down with them.and make other clubs supporters feel bad for them.

they dug there grave now they can get themselves out of it.........................................great round of footy comming up games that could define the season.in the words of big ted im so excited..........................................................fortress eagle where eagles dare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fortresseagle's picture

sorry coach im at eagle rocks place, and forgot to change his post so that last comment was mine not eagle rocks, by the way coach you never paid eagle rocks a compliment he tipped the panthers to beat the broncos as well.

hope everyone is having a great night stay warm and chat soon ..............................the fortress wings and all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahh yes those fools who took the $4+ about the Panthers last week.

Broncos the weekly favourites, this time ever so slight against 2nd last placed Roosters. Absolute certainties right?

Coach Potato's picture

Ahh the old phone swap routine.
Any chance you could both post a 20-line rant simultaneously?

Anyone who tipped the Panthers knew their stuff. Don't need me to tell them anything.

Think you'll be seeing the funny side of things in 48 hours Rocky?

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Broncos by 10- The Broncos to get the win here over the Roosters. I think that the Broncos will be too good here although they have two significant players out in Thaiday and McGuire. But for me, it's going to be intriguing to see how the forwards of both sides go, with both teams still having decent forwards in their line-ups although they both have some important forwards to their respective sides out.

Dragons by 2- Yes, I'm not going against my team. Even though people expect the Bulldogs to demolish the Dragons, I just have this feeling that it's going to be an absolute cracking, tight game. These two great sides have a fierce rivalry which has been going on for a long time now. It makes sense that these two sides are playing in retro round. Classic grand finals/finals matches in the 80s, 60s and 70s. Should be a ripper of a game. But like I said, I'm not going against my team so I'm tipping us to win but in a tight one since we don't have the points to smash the Bulldogs. But, for us to win, we need to defend very, very well.

Warriors by 2- Warriors in what should be cracking game. Pretty much only because of them playing at Mt Smart where they play well at.

Tigers by 4- This one is such a tough game to choose from. But I'm going of the way of the Tigers in a tight one. But I seriously wouldn't be surprised to see the Eels winning since it's at Pirtek where all their passionate fans will be cheering loud and proud, let alone, I wouldn't even really be surprised if Eels smash the Tigers. I'm being dead set serious.

Storm by 8- Storm will be too good here only because of JT being out for this one which is a massive blow for the Cowboys, I don't know how well they'll go without him in a full game (excluding origin) especially against a very good Storm side.

Raiders by 18- Raiders will be way too good for the poor old Bunnies in this one.

Manly by 30- This is going to be an absolute belting from Manly to the Knights.

And finally... the Sharks by 8- The Sharks to make it 16 in a row with a hard fought win over the Titans here. In which should be an exciting and interesting match.

Awesome. That's done. Good luck to everyone's team this week. And also good luck with everyone's tips. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Ahhh, Manly fans, someone has to love them.

On to the football,

Broncos - I want to back the Roosters, really I do. They weren't exactly terrible against the compertition front runners in back to back weeks, but..................... they seem to be lacking something. That said the Broncos are lacking the same thing. Maranta should not have been tackled in goal, just sloppy, uninspired errors at the moment. But with out Thiday I think they gain something with the young guard. Broncos, but not by as much as you might think.

Bulldogs - Just put me down for a hunch, you don't win in the origin period without playing well. Lets put last week up as a blip and see if Shirley Bassy comes out to play. https://youtu.be/15QngStkp-E

Panthers - Warriors two heartbreaking losses in golden point in two straight week. For me that speaks of momentum breaking down over the ditch. The only threat I would worry about for the Panthers is after knocking off the Broncos last week, they might under estimate the Warriors attack and get bushwacked.

Eels - Oi Todd we want Peatys back now you thief. We are staying in games, our defence is loose, Toutai being back will help that slightly, but we need our young prospects to fire, and make that impact they have been promising all year. Time to rest the BOYS, have an early mad Monday and start next years preseason Tuesday the 2nd of August.

Storm - This is one of the games that might break the Cowboys season. Cop a thrashing at home, they might put the weights on Thurston to come back early to his detriment. Can't see the Storm losing against the Cowboys with the team wrapped in cotton wool on the side lines. Game, Set and Match to the Storm.

Raiders - Might lose this one on the bell. Going great racking up good leads, and then blowing them. Might be a teams coached by Ricky habit. If the hold their line and defend this is theirs to lose. Give the Bunnies a sniff and they might be bundled out of the eight by a team under performing.

Manly - I was thinking the Knights till I read Mullens is out. Only think that changed my mind. Again the Knights are getting better, not great but better than where they were and Manly's not the team they were. But you play this game with whats in front of you. Just a shame its Manly.

Sharks - Peats in, closer game. Peats out, might get bloody. Titans have been great since they were gifted him by the NRL. Conflict of interest Todd. A loss now would set the Sharks up for a better back end run, I like every other NRL fan would enjoy seeing the Sharks get their first Premiership. But blow off that pressure valve quickly, and get back to basics.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I could lead my joker as a club before trying to run my 8 no trumps to completion, and back the Raiders. Or would you rather me turn you down and go alone with the Panthers? It could be the Storm for 120 points because I'm over 3000. :P Anywhere, anytime, you me and a deck of cards mate.

fortresseagle's picture

its early but why not here are my tips for round 21 of the nrl :

the mighty eagles to completely and utterly demolish the knights with a double slap to nathan browns face the mighty eagles by 40

the broncos to decimate the roosters by 30

the bulldogs to come over the drag queens by 14

the panthers to just edge the warriors in a thriller by 2

i dislike both these sides but something tells me the cowboys want to prove they can win without jt and they are at smiles stadium tipping the upset the cowboys by 4

tigers and the rorters game could go either way hard one to pick but ill stick with the pussys sorry i meant the tigers by 6

the raiders to just about bring the curtain down on mcguires coaching stint the poor sod.the raiders to execute them by 20

Coach Potato's picture

And so Rocky the horse kicked at the barn door,
as sream rose out those menacing flared nostrils
Iike Puffing Billy on a charge.
"That's it" neighed Rocky..
"I'm bringing out the cheap suit"

"Oh no", yelped Mr Potato.
"Not the cheap suit".
"Anything but the cheap suit".
"I'v e always been a well-dresssed jacket man".

Just then Crowie the Rooster, pecked his was around the corner of the barn, doing his best Jagger impersonation.

"No fear, Potato", "I"ll saves ya" as Crowie let out an almighty cock-a-doodle-do and the Jagger thing turned into song ..."Wild, wild horses couldn't drag me àaaawwwaaayyy .."

Doggie,
I'm pretty sure your comment is still there, it's just buried away in the comments on the round 20 page...and this is the round 21 page. So you don't have to spend half an hour looking for it, here it is below:

Great weekend of footy guys. Missed most of it. Was up in Arnhem Land. Weather up here is probably abit better than SE Queensland mark. BigPete those names u thru up are not familiar. Must have been before my time. It was 30yrs ago mate & i can remember playing with Crowy & Rosco & next year we all went to Nambucca Heads to play. Pub there was run by Billy Wilson & his sons Steve & Brad. Billy Wilson was from Oberon & he played for St George during their hey day. He was named in St Georges toughest front row ever. To all you Cowboys supporters, congrats, really towelled up my beloved doggies. Another Thurston masterclass. Back to the drawing board for Dessie. Or is he playing games. We will see.

Johnny Awesome,

Regarding the tipping comp next season - we should have a few vacancies and I'll expand the comp to include a few more tipsters too.

A couple of people are all but guaranteed inclusion next season and beyond if they want to be a part of it (BigPete, Islander, Christine if she wants it)....but I'm sure we can get you in there too.

Doggie's picture

Thanks Mr Thinker.

Brad 's picture

G'day The Thinker,

Have been following your website all year and would love to join in as a tipster next year should there be enough vacancies.

Cheers,

Brad

I meant to say Thinker I will take a place on the tipping ladder next season if you can fit me in please .

christine's picture

Thinker we'll see what happens with the comp next year juggling three comps at once plus having treatment for my illness which I really don't know how that is going to go so maybe next season I will just do the same as this season & then we will see after that what happens ok .

Rocket 's picture

Thanks coach that was a bit funny, but the warriors could really get me giggling.

I remain hopefull.
