Round twenty one selections

Sydney Roosters vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – Allianz Stadium

The Roosters won the last three minor premierships in a row, and they've won just three games this season. Their last win was way back in round 13, in atrocious conditions over the Tigers. Other than that they've beaten the team running last and the team running thirteenth. They're not just a shadow of the team they were in seasons past, they're a shadow of a shadow. Dark days indeed. Despite that, you've got to give them a chance on recent form. The Bulldogs only beat them by four points, and the Bulldogs beat the Broncos by 26. The Storm beat them in Melbourne by 16 points, but the Storm beat the Broncos in Brisbane by 42 points. And a 12 point loss to the Sharks isn't a disgrace either. The Broncos, with just two wins from their last eight games, are looking a little shadowy themselves. Thaiday, McGuire, Kahu and Reed are unavailable - that's (technically) four internationals, but the return of Gillett is an important one. I'm far from confident, but we've seen the Broncos with their backs to the wall many times over the years. More often than not, they fight back and find a way. If Waerea-Hargreaves was playing I'd be tipping the Chickens...but he isn't...so I won't.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Roosters 32 defeated Broncos 16

Canterbury Bulldogs vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

These sides met in round 14 where the Bulldogs prevailed 34-16, and the line-ups on Friday night are much the same as they were back then. The Dragons have done little to show me they've improved. Since round 14 they've beaten a reserve grade Storm outfit and the Knights, but they've been dismantled on every other occasion. The Bulldogs were dismantled last week, but the team that dismantled them would have dismantled everybody. More on that later. With a loss here the Dragons can all but plan their trip to Thailand. I can't say the Dragons have been great in 2016, but the effort was there. Effort won't be enough on Friday night. Woof Woof.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 16

Result - Bulldogs 13 defeated Dragons 10

New Zealand Warriors vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Here's something you may not have noticed. The Warriors have lost their last three away games in golden point extra time to the Raiders in Canberra, the Sea Eagles in Perth and the Sharks in Sydney. They'll be happy they're back at Mt Smart where they usually produce their best, including their last two performances at home where they soundly defeated two top eight sides in the Titans and the Broncos. The Panthers are a top eight side currently - a win here and they probably move to seventh, while a loss sees them swapping places with the Warriors. A loss for the Warriors and they could quite easily drop to 11th. These sides played in Christchurch in round 10 where the Warriors started well but were no match for the Panthers in the end. The Warriors record in New Zealand away from Mt Smart is comically bad, so this is more like a real home game for them. That said, if the Panthers hold their form from last week they should prevail again. There are many ways to beat the Warriors (and sometimes they beat themselves). I imagine Nathan Cleary has had a chat to his Dad about a few of those ways.

Verdict – Panthers by 1

Result - Warriors 20 defeated Panthers 16

Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

When you are right 70% of the time you are going to be wrong 30% of the time, and I have a confession to make - I was wrong about Aaron Woods. I had him labelled as a bit of a pudding, probably because he looks like Baloo from The Jungle Book. This season he's racked up triple figures in metres gained every time he has played (including three Origins), and he's doing it the hard way. Three times this season he's run for more than 200 metres, and he was near his best with 183 metres last week. It's on the back of that effort, and the efforts of the lessor known supporting players in the Tigers pack, that the kids in the Tigers backline can perform. The Tigers are unlikely to make the top eight but it's not impossible. The Eels are done. Effort, and the flickering hope of finals football, will get the Tigers home.

Verdict – Tigers by 8

Result - Tigers 23 defeated Eels 8

North Queensland Cowboys vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

While there was plenty of chatter here about the Panthers last week, the Panthers General Manager wrote an article about the Cowboys. Phil Gould described the Cowboys demolition of the Bulldogs as easily the best performance of the season. He described their first half performance as perfect football. That's high praise, and while they take to the field without their most important player they are yet to lose at home all season. In a way the absence of Thurston takes some of the pressure off them in this game. If he were there, and the Storm won, it would be quite a blow. Without him they know they have an ace up their sleeve if these two meet again in the finals (and that's looking likely). It's not often I focus on the wingers, and with good reason, but this game may be the exception that proves the rule. Winterstein isn't the tallest winger in the world and I expect Cooper Cronk to try and isolate him under the high ball. On the other flank Javen Bowen will need to contain Koroibete. The two Fijian wingers have notched up 27 tries for the Storm this season. In a game I'm finding difficult to split their finishing power could be the difference.

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result - Storm 16 defeated Cowboys 8

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

The Bunnies have named a cast of thousands on the bench which should boost the attendance figures at Tumbleweed Stadium this weekend. The red and green have all but given up, and those left in the crowd are rusted-ons that are there through thick and thin. They look thin. The Raiders have the top four in their sights and they deserve a finals berth this season. Well done Ricky Stuart...you cranky b*stard.

Verdict – Raiders by 18

Result - Raiders 54 defeated Rabbitohs 4

Manly Sea Eagles vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Brookvale Oval

Talking about the Knights makes me sad. I simply don't want to talk about it, instead I'll close my eyes and pretend it's 1997.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 32

Result - Sea Eagles 36 defeated Knights 16

Gold Coast Titans vs Cronulla Sharks – Monday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Irrational this may be, but it wouldn't hurt the Sharks to lose a game before the finals series. The Titans are a sneaky hope here, but I have to remind myself of their clash in round six when the Sharks lost both Maloney and Lewis early in the game, and Andrew Fifita in the second half...and they still found a way to win. Finding a way to win has been their thing since round three. Greg Bird returns against his old side, but he's the sort of goofball that will try too hard, overplay his hand, and give away silly penalties. Someone will beat the Sharks eventually, but we may have to wait until they take on a team with a bigger boat.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Titans 18 drew with Sharks 18

coach I speak from experience , I've been there a few times .

Coach Potato's picture

Ahh crystal ball still works afterall.

Sherlock Potato also reduces that Chester is not your name bit the quaint little town you are from.

Can I also try a Dynamo while I;m at it and guess your Premier League team is Everton?

mark ashford's picture

Coach I didn't understand a word you said.
Can you please repeat it in English (I'm a bit slow tonight)

GaryChesterUK's picture

Not had a big bet, as suggested wasn't the game for that really!

My pin has landed on Roosters HT/Roosters FT

2/1.

Enjoy the game

Welcome to The Thinker site Gary and that a boy with The Real Football.
Go The Red Devils mate. I love the game and played/coached for a very long time.

Will be interesting to see how Jose goes with them this season.
I'm not a lover of past players walking into immediate coach/mgr roles at the club they are or were with. Could be friction and uneasiness with other players. So on that, sorry for Giggsy.

UK Super League is a bit slower isn't it Gary. I guess with rain and mud, as much as you get, it would be.
More for draught horses or along those lines.

Enjoy it here, as I'm sure you will.

GaryChesterUK's picture

Gary is my name, Chester is my city (look it up, very nice!), Man Utd are my Premier League team :-) Chester is largely made up of Liverpool, Everton and Man Utd fans.

GaryChesterUK's picture

Cheers Pete, Yeah I think Jose will do well, probably not the most exciting football on show this season though but its a trade off I suppose!

I think in General NRL players are just a bit bigger, faster and stronger, and the fact that you guys grow up playing it whilst in the main we all play soccer gives you that extra touch of game intelligence - and yep the weather doesn't help the standard here - Super League still enjoyable though and the best players can go and try their luck in the NRL, think that will happen more!

fortresseagle's picture

Yes coach I think his deck of cards was a royal rort ooops I meant to say flush.

Coach I like your streak theory but you would think were a chance the knights the eels the dogs at home tough one but they are beatable then both the raiders and storm at brookie ending with your panthers at the dreaded mountains I have a feeling that that could be the game that could make or break although if we go on a winning run and if the panthers are already assured of finals spot than the eagles may want it more , long way to go no game is easy though one would think that the eagles will trample the knights.

Good game tonite the broncs to pull away in the second half and win tonight the chooks are roast chooks.

Fortress eagle where eagkes dare!!!!!!!!!!

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Fortress - the hate goes on.
Some Qld'ers like us, as they know we had quite a number of their clan play with Manly.

Nice to see a newy from UK join us. Manly also had a few of them, as well. Some real goodens actually.
Two different styles of play mate.

BigPeteBx's picture

Aah yes Gary - but a lot of people overlook the fact, that playing soccer develops the natural sidestep in a rugby league player.

I knew of a few that played soccer as youngsters. I know Shane Flanagan's (Cronulla Sharks NRL coach) son or one of them, played rep soccer with Sutherland Shire, as one of my friends son played with him. He was a good runner, so maybe Shane has him back at league.

We should have a good chin-wag here. Others can join in and I hope some do have a following toward an EPL Club. Also good for NRL off-season.

Keep well mate - Big Pete

Good evening Thinker.

I'd like to be included, if that is possible, as when I joined the site I thought it was like others and if you missed the first round (like I did), no probs - no points, unless home team wins were given.

Thinker, may I ask what are the conditions, as to why there are limitations as to the number of players you take into the "Major" league. Or is the cut-off before first game - the final number and nothing added after.

Coach Potato's picture

#Dammit. I was close.
Your coin landed on the right side Gazza. Roosters half time / full time looking ok.

#Geez Roosters, there must be ..... nearly 2,000 there tonight. Aren't you glad you play in such a big stadium.

#God that's a complicated and painfully long finals system Gazza.
Top 8 play for 7 weeks, playing each other once. All the while they keep their points from the regular season and add to the finals points. Then top 4 play two semis then the final. Boy.

Coach Potato's picture

How's that barn door fairing Rocket?

Coach Potato's picture

Was talking English to an Englishman.
What language did you prefer I use?

fortresseagle's picture

Mark and rocket now is the time for Milford and hunt to step up it's not a big lead they can come back have to get over mr average Pearce.
I said first half will be tough expect broncos to fight back.

Fortress eagle !!!!!!

Coach Potato's picture

Hey Rocket,
That cheap suit fits you like a glove.
It's all yours.

Coach Potato's picture

The game would have to be on the take for Broncos to win from here.

Baggy_Gee's picture

You had me listed as Canberra. Check your listing. Baggy, Can, recorded above.

Baggy_Gee's picture

That's why I didn't say anything else. I looked and you had me locked in with the raiders.

Baggy_Gee's picture

16 points in 19 minutes. Could be impossible to run down now.

The Thinker's picture

Quite the fall from grace is it not?

Coach Potato's picture

Sorry Bags.
Rules say you can't take the same team twice, let alone two weeks in a row. You played well, but you're on the couch bud.

Coach Potato's picture

You mean Roosters? Or Broncos?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Someone said that since round 8-9 the broncos changed their look, they look as though they have lost their control of the game. Always chasing points, not playing for position or possession.

Coach Potato's picture

Still want to host the Grand Final Broncos fans ?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Damn, I misread it. Oh well it was a lot of fun while it lasted.

Coach Potato's picture

My suspicion is still in-fighting.
Eg. How rarely does Roberts get the ball with any space.
He wasn't bought to not give the ball to.
There's some goings on back on the training paddock for sure.

Coach Potato's picture

Did the best I could do with the alert.

Baggy_Gee's picture

And all 10 people at the ground erupt in delight. Where is the crowd and how bad are the bunkers decisions.

Coach Potato's picture

Ahhh Bunker. Our ol' foe The Bunker.

Baggy_Gee's picture

That's OK, was stuck at work. Life goes on. Still a great concept for a comp within a comp.

Coach Potato's picture

His elbow didn't even touch the grass.

The only ones touchin the grass are the ones in the Bunker.

Coach Potato's picture

His elbow didn't even touch the grass.

The only ones touchin the grass are the ones in the Bunker.

Baggy_Gee's picture

A Cory Parker led walk off would have been appropriate reaction. Would have put pressure on the NRL to clean up the bunker mess.

Baggy_Gee's picture

His elbow was down, but there is no way his momentum was stopped, all natural, and we'll deserved. Badly dudded.

Coach Potato's picture

Shit. You'd have to give Dragons a chance @WIN against Broncos next Thursday.

Baggy_Gee's picture

The BOYS are looking good for a win as well.

Rocket Ryan's picture

We lost to bottom of the ladder team for the second week big hole getting bigger long way from our best.

a's picture

The bunker sucks

Coach Potato's picture

Some Broncos fans need scrubbin up on their stuff as much as the players. Don't think Panthers were bottom of the table.
Cheap suit and Dunce's cap. Not high fashion.

Coach Potato's picture

Baggy, the arm did not touch the ground.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Try that suit on it may fit latter in the year

The Thinker's picture

Sadly for you though Coach, the Panthers win over the Broncos last week doesn't look so good now.

The Broncos have now leaked 161 points in five games. It beggars belief.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Pre-planned set plays why why why

Coach Potato's picture

The problem for Broncos is the improved on line defence shown from some teams. Instead of committing players too early, which the Broncos crave, outside backs and wingers are waiting for the ball carrier to come to them and just marking up their opposite. This much negates the overlap, something the Broncos rely almost entirely upon.

Coach Potato's picture

We broke their hearts Thinker just as we did early in the season.
This place really is the Comedy Company.

Coach Potato's picture

Hey Rocky Balboa,
Got anything to say about the better team, or you just happy to keep saying how bad you were.

Thinker, Roosters were good tonight?

tigerholic's picture

A fair decision by the bunker, his momentum clearly stopped for a nan-second, thats the rules boys.

Does anyone on the site play a little golf? Interested to hear what handicaps you have, "Rocket", I already know your handicap is your clubs.

Coach Potato's picture

Coach Potato is.
Best round 3 over, including playing the last 6 holes 3 under.

Coach Potato's picture

No hole in ones. Close. 8cm. But not in.
Eagle-2 on a par 4 from 140m once though.
