Sydney Roosters vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – Allianz Stadium
The Roosters won the last three minor premierships in a row, and they've won just three games this season. Their last win was way back in round 13, in atrocious conditions over the Tigers. Other than that they've beaten the team running last and the team running thirteenth. They're not just a shadow of the team they were in seasons past, they're a shadow of a shadow. Dark days indeed. Despite that, you've got to give them a chance on recent form. The Bulldogs only beat them by four points, and the Bulldogs beat the Broncos by 26. The Storm beat them in Melbourne by 16 points, but the Storm beat the Broncos in Brisbane by 42 points. And a 12 point loss to the Sharks isn't a disgrace either. The Broncos, with just two wins from their last eight games, are looking a little shadowy themselves. Thaiday, McGuire, Kahu and Reed are unavailable - that's (technically) four internationals, but the return of Gillett is an important one. I'm far from confident, but we've seen the Broncos with their backs to the wall many times over the years. More often than not, they fight back and find a way. If Waerea-Hargreaves was playing I'd be tipping the Chickens...but he isn't...so I won't.
Verdict – Broncos by 4
Result - Roosters 32 defeated Broncos 16
Canterbury Bulldogs vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – ANZ Stadium
These sides met in round 14 where the Bulldogs prevailed 34-16, and the line-ups on Friday night are much the same as they were back then. The Dragons have done little to show me they've improved. Since round 14 they've beaten a reserve grade Storm outfit and the Knights, but they've been dismantled on every other occasion. The Bulldogs were dismantled last week, but the team that dismantled them would have dismantled everybody. More on that later. With a loss here the Dragons can all but plan their trip to Thailand. I can't say the Dragons have been great in 2016, but the effort was there. Effort won't be enough on Friday night. Woof Woof.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 16
Result - Bulldogs 13 defeated Dragons 10
New Zealand Warriors vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium
Here's something you may not have noticed. The Warriors have lost their last three away games in golden point extra time to the Raiders in Canberra, the Sea Eagles in Perth and the Sharks in Sydney. They'll be happy they're back at Mt Smart where they usually produce their best, including their last two performances at home where they soundly defeated two top eight sides in the Titans and the Broncos. The Panthers are a top eight side currently - a win here and they probably move to seventh, while a loss sees them swapping places with the Warriors. A loss for the Warriors and they could quite easily drop to 11th. These sides played in Christchurch in round 10 where the Warriors started well but were no match for the Panthers in the end. The Warriors record in New Zealand away from Mt Smart is comically bad, so this is more like a real home game for them. That said, if the Panthers hold their form from last week they should prevail again. There are many ways to beat the Warriors (and sometimes they beat themselves). I imagine Nathan Cleary has had a chat to his Dad about a few of those ways.
Verdict – Panthers by 1
Result - Warriors 20 defeated Panthers 16
Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium
When you are right 70% of the time you are going to be wrong 30% of the time, and I have a confession to make - I was wrong about Aaron Woods. I had him labelled as a bit of a pudding, probably because he looks like Baloo from The Jungle Book. This season he's racked up triple figures in metres gained every time he has played (including three Origins), and he's doing it the hard way. Three times this season he's run for more than 200 metres, and he was near his best with 183 metres last week. It's on the back of that effort, and the efforts of the lessor known supporting players in the Tigers pack, that the kids in the Tigers backline can perform. The Tigers are unlikely to make the top eight but it's not impossible. The Eels are done. Effort, and the flickering hope of finals football, will get the Tigers home.
Verdict – Tigers by 8
Result - Tigers 23 defeated Eels 8
North Queensland Cowboys vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
While there was plenty of chatter here about the Panthers last week, the Panthers General Manager wrote an article about the Cowboys. Phil Gould described the Cowboys demolition of the Bulldogs as easily the best performance of the season. He described their first half performance as perfect football. That's high praise, and while they take to the field without their most important player they are yet to lose at home all season. In a way the absence of Thurston takes some of the pressure off them in this game. If he were there, and the Storm won, it would be quite a blow. Without him they know they have an ace up their sleeve if these two meet again in the finals (and that's looking likely). It's not often I focus on the wingers, and with good reason, but this game may be the exception that proves the rule. Winterstein isn't the tallest winger in the world and I expect Cooper Cronk to try and isolate him under the high ball. On the other flank Javen Bowen will need to contain Koroibete. The two Fijian wingers have notched up 27 tries for the Storm this season. In a game I'm finding difficult to split their finishing power could be the difference.
Verdict – Storm by 7
Result - Storm 16 defeated Cowboys 8
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
The Bunnies have named a cast of thousands on the bench which should boost the attendance figures at Tumbleweed Stadium this weekend. The red and green have all but given up, and those left in the crowd are rusted-ons that are there through thick and thin. They look thin. The Raiders have the top four in their sights and they deserve a finals berth this season. Well done Ricky Stuart...you cranky b*stard.
Verdict – Raiders by 18
Result - Raiders 54 defeated Rabbitohs 4
Manly Sea Eagles vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Brookvale Oval
Talking about the Knights makes me sad. I simply don't want to talk about it, instead I'll close my eyes and pretend it's 1997.
Verdict – Sea Eagles by 32
Result - Sea Eagles 36 defeated Knights 16
Gold Coast Titans vs Cronulla Sharks – Monday night – Cbus Super Stadium
Irrational this may be, but it wouldn't hurt the Sharks to lose a game before the finals series. The Titans are a sneaky hope here, but I have to remind myself of their clash in round six when the Sharks lost both Maloney and Lewis early in the game, and Andrew Fifita in the second half...and they still found a way to win. Finding a way to win has been their thing since round three. Greg Bird returns against his old side, but he's the sort of goofball that will try too hard, overplay his hand, and give away silly penalties. Someone will beat the Sharks eventually, but we may have to wait until they take on a team with a bigger boat.
Verdict – Sharks by 4
Result - Titans 18 drew with Sharks 18
Wally Lewis - round twenty-one selections (in bold)
Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
- Roosters vs BRONCOS
- BULLDOGS vs Dragons
- Warriors vs PANTHERS
- Eels vs TIGERS
- Cowboys vs STORM
- Rabbitohs vs RAIDERS
- SEA EAGLES vs Knights
- Titans vs SHARKS

Sorry everyone, The Streak Table has been corrected. Somehow I had Dogs down for a win last week?! Kinda forgot everything past Friday night. Boy I remember that night though.
Anyway, here it is, and Canberra have moved to outright 3rd.
That's right, they are currently standing on the podium, and as we all know, if you are not on the podium you can't win the Gold Medal.
With a win against Souths, they move to 10 and become the 3rd team to pass the test to finish top4.
Who will be the 4th team to make it to 10?
Broncos just need another 3 streak somewhere, biut where's it gonna start? The last time they strung 2 together was rounds 7 and 8.
Those surprised about the Cowboys score should know they only have two streaks of 5 and 2, although after winning last week, they will move to 9 if they beat the Storm. 10 score could be just 2 wins away.
Dogs with streaks of 2, 2, and 4, they will only improve if they manage another streak of 3 - and that's just to get to 9. Simply, they only get to 10 with a streak of 4+ from here.
Gold Coast can get to 10 by winning their next 3 straight. Lose against Sharks though and they would need to win 5 straight to get to 10.
Panthers can only get to 10 with the current streak stretching to 6 games. Lose any of the next 4 games and they can't make 10.
Manly can only get to 10 by winning their next 5, a streak of 8.
Warriors could get to 10 with a 5 streak starting either this week or next week.
Tigers must win their next 5 games to make 10.
Dragons need to win all 6 to make 10.
So looks like the Cowboys the best chance at 10 and the top4 especially if they beat Storm. Even if they dont, they can get there with another 3 streak.
The streak theory says Premiership hopes are on the line for lots of teams right here and now (and I'm sure they don't quite realise it)
(* Currently on a streak)
1 SHARKS 15* 0
2 STORM 14* 0
3 RAIDERS 9* 4
4 BULLDOGS 8. 2
5 EELS 8 4

Hi everyone,
Early start this week so let’s get into it…
Roosters - Both pretty close in the markets and the line is only 1.5 so Newbie reckons the “experts” have worked out that this might be a little closer than some may think. I’m hoping the Roosters will turn their woeful defence around this week and cause a semi-upset. If this was at Suncorp I’d be tipping the Broncos but it’s not and I’m not. I know this defies all logic and I should play safe but I’m tipping my Beautiful Boys to get the bikkies on Thursday night. I’d end this with a “cock-a-doodle-doo” but you would all pick up on the first word and make fun so I won’t (ha-ha).
Doggies - The Doggies are much better than last week’s effort against the Cowboys. Mind you, it was a case of the Cows turning everything they touched to gold. Could not have done any better. Des will obviously work his “magic” and get the Doggies re-focused and the poor ol’ Dragons are gonna be on the end of it. Ouch!
Panthers - Geez, how stiff are the Warriors eh? Golden point losses 2 weeks in a row. Again, I feel your pain JR. I see the Warriors are favourites here but based on what they did last week, the “Cleary Factor” and because I think I should jump on board, I’m tipping the Panthers this week. What noise does a Panther make guys? Until someone tells me definitively, I think I’ll go with a “Roaaaaar”!
The Tigers weren’t too bad last time but not so the Eels (sort of). I’m liking the Tigers here in this one. Watched the game on free-to-air last Sunday and think if they bring that style to ANZ Saturday night they should get the job done. Wests for me.
Storm - The Cowboys were pretty darn good last week and they did go on with it even after JT left the park but it was at home (their record at home is out of this world), most of the damage had already been done and the Doggies forgot to show up. Yes, the Cows are at home again but no JT and fronting up against the Storm has me thinking. Anyone else and I’d be sticking with the Cows but against the Storm I’m leaning ever so slightly towards the Troopers. Storm for me.
Raiders - Holy moley! Rabbitohs or Raiders? Rabbitohs or Raiders? Losing games can sometimes become habit forming. Just ask me about my beloved Roosters if ya need convincing. By the same token, winning can sometimes become habit forming too. The Raiders have been doing more of the latter and that suggests to me that I should be picking the guys with the funny hats with horns sticking out of the top. Raiders for me, based on nothing more than winning form is good form.
Manly - Seriously, what positives can you bring forth if you were making a case for the Knights? Don’t worry Knights fans, every dog has his day and yours will come. Somebody has to be on top, someone has to just miss out on making the 8 and someone has to be propping up the bottom. Everyone (and I mean everyone) has to take their turn at some stage or another. Don’t feel lonely, my beloved Roosters are down there with you keeping you company. Think of it as character-building. It just makes the inevitable success so much sweeter. Anyway, WTH has this got to do with this game you’re thinking. Well not much except to fill up a few lines on the page I suppose. In case you haven’t guessed, I’m tipping Manly here.
Sharks - Why would you think that the Sharks couldn’t just keep rolling along? How does anyone stop them? This should be another win for them here. I see that TABtouch (the TAB over here in the West) have them @ $1.45 in the H2H and the line is a mere 6.5 points. That looks like easy money to me. Not that I’ll be having any of that, I’m just saying. Mind you, the Titans are showing $4.30 for 1-12 so should I have something on that just in case? Whatever I do, I’ll be doing it responsibly I can assure you. The Titans have been OK lately but I’ll stick with the Sharks.
OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points!
P.S. If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would anyone ever know? Hmmm…
LAST ONE ON THE COUCH
Coach, can you pencil me in for Manly this week? Thanks mate…

Hi Guys,
First time poster - I live in the UK & love the NRL.
I tend to watch and have a good bet to give me some interest - support souths largely due to the Burgess's!
Really struggling to pick a bet for Roosters v Broncos - leaning towards Broncos at about Even money - but also tempted with points (Over 41.5 is the spread here) - due to it being dry and relatively warm?
What would you experts advise? I'm off to bed now waking up just before Kick off - hopefully you experts will have some advice!

Can the Broncos win without Gillet? They have some class forwards out and now Gillet. The new guys could be like blisters and won't show up till the work’s done by the others. Then again Bennet is the kind of bloke who could hear a whisper in a thunderstorm so I won't under estimate him. I think it may be the chooks to win though. Cheers Mr Awesome

Hi Gary, welcome aboard the roller coaster, mate, I reckon the Broncos are in all sorts of trouble at the moment and I think this will be still be too hard for them. The Roosters are still having attack issues but I think they will put on a good show at home tonight. If you go on the past record for these two, its been tit for tat and its Roosters turn to win. Looks like a fair bit of money floating towards the Roosters as it is even money now and I reckon by tonight Roosters will be favourites.

Hi Gary
I'd like to add my welcome mate. Great to have someone from the UK on board.
I stopped gambling years ago (used to be a sucker for the poker machines)
I'm a Broncos supporter but wouldn't advise putting too much on them tonight.
They have not been going too well lately and the Roosters who can't make the 8 will be trying to knock off the teams above them.
Bulldogs or Sea Eagles might be a safer bet depending on odds.
Good luck mate!

I think Souths will beat Raiders. The Raiders had a tuff game last week. Going on past performances they usually have a weeks break after that. Haven't seen them back up for 80 minutes. However if the Raiders do eventually decide to play for 80 minutes consistently, they will be close to being unbeatable. Cheers Mr Awesome

Mark I would actually like Broncos to play finals.
Because wouldn't it be a debacle with the fait accompli new Grand Final venue hosting various combinations of non Qld teams year after year.
I didn't get to add from Origin III that a dead rubber game still exceeded Suncorp's capacity by 11;000.
A non Qld Grand Final would be similar to a dead rubber, so what would be the audience level at twice the entry price to ANZ?
Time will soon show that Broncos quest to host the big one was based largely on a naive notion that themselves and Cowboys would dominate for years to come.

So still struggling to pick a bet, as suggested it may be one to just watch, but not much fun in that! 20 mins to pick something to have a little on!
Coach i'm near liverpool UK, about 20 miles from me, and about 40 miles from Manchester. My nearest Super League team is Widnes, probably 18 miles or so away - but I support Wigan. As your robably aware rugby League isn't huge in the UK (For some reason) - and I am just outside its stronghold based mainly within a 40 mile radius of Manchester. My City has just formed their first RL team so I have my boy training down there as he is fast and good with his hands, but like most people his main interest is Football (soccer!).
The super league is obviously nowhere near the standard of the NRL but is a decent watch, I catch the NRL games in the mornings and the super league at night - 9 times out of 10 with a bet on the game.

Going by what Fortress expressed and described - you could get a bit squeezed up. I'm lighter than Fortress, but 6ft 3 in old scale.
As for Eagle Rocks - if its rocks, he'd weigh us down a little.
Good luck with Broncos match tonight. They have to travel South and Chooks might touch em up a bit. Will be a close one.
