Round twenty two selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – WIN Stadium

Two teams that, on form, appear to be in a race to the bottom. The Dragons have a head start, while the Broncos have time to turn their ship around if they can. Right now I'm not sure how seaworthy the Broncos vessell is. I'm reminded of those boats they make out of strapped together beer cans for charity events. They do get three international forwards back on Thursday night, while the Dragons lose (I think) their two best forwards in Thompson and Frizell. The Dragons had everything to play for last week, and while they tried a few more things in attack against the Bulldogs, they still only managed 10 points. Given the leakage from the Broncos in defence of late (161 points conceded in five games) the Dragons may have more luck here. Clearly I have no confidence in either side at the minute, but I'm giving the Broncos one more chance (keen observers will note I've been saying that about the Broncos for at least a month).

Verdict – Broncos by 2

Result - Broncos 12 defeated Dragons 8

Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

I was all set to tip the Eels this week. Three important inclusions in Ma'u, Scott and Jennings, and the Eels hatred for the Sea Eagles runs deeper than most. A win here and they all but end the Sea Eagles hopes of a finals campaign. I thought all that would be enough, and it still might be. In the end, two things changed my mind:

  1. This isn't the Eels last game at Pirtek this season (and when that day arrives in round 25 the Eels will fly like Superman); and
  2. I had a look at the Eels line-up that beat the Sea Eagles in round seven (22-10). That team included Norman, Foran, Peats, Paulo and Radradra. This team on Friday night will not.

The Sea Eagles went close in round seven (they actually led until around the 70th minute). Given that their season is on the line, and their remaining games after this one look frightening, I've come full circle and I'm doing the Eagle Rock for one more round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 7

Result - Eels 10 defeated Sea Eagles 9

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

The Knights will win another game this season. Their draw isn't too bad and they still have their 'old boys' game...but they won't be winning this.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 20

Result - Bulldogs 28 defeated Knights 14

Cronulla Sharks vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

A quick turnaround from an extra time draw for the Sharks and the Raiders are in a rich vein of form. There are many that think the premiership is a three-horse race, and the green machine would like nothing more than to knock off one of those three. When the Raiders are playing well they are a delight to behold, and I've loved watching their development this season. But (there's always a but), I can't tip them this weekend. They'll be packed to the rafters on Saturday night, and with the minor premiership on the line the boys in blue won't be losing their last two home games this season. Note that the Sharks did play the Raiders in Canberra earlier in the year, and it was a towel-up. This won't be a towel-up, but the Sharks can maintain their 'not losing streak' for another round.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Raiders 30 defeated Sharks 14

Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – AAMI Park

I have an image in my head of Storm coach Craig Bellamy, dressed up as Elmer Fudd, hunting rifle in hand. "It's rabbit season". Inglis returns in the halves for the red and green but it's too late baby now it's too late...though they really did try to make it. The Storm don't need to work on their points differential, given the Sharks are on an odd number and the Storm are on an even number, but they'll be unleashing a wave of purple fury on Saturday night. A clinic.

Verdict – Storm by 40

Result - Storm 15 defeated Rabbitohs 14

Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

Channel Nine must be annoyed. They've given this game to Fox Sports, which was a perfectly cromulent decision until the Hayne plane landed at the Gold Coast Airport. Suddenly the delays around the re-signing of Titans fullback David Mead make more sense. If Hayne plays (and he may not) I assume Mead shifts to one wing and perhaps Macdonald to the bench given his utility value and the possibility that Hayne does a hamstring the first time he tries to stretch out. This was going to be a big game anyway, but there's a whole other dimension at play now. Both sides are playing well and both sides are backing up from golden point games. Golden point has become habit-forming for the Warriors in recent weeks and this looks like the sort of game that could go the same way. They'll just about sell the joint out on Sunday afternoon, and almost half the crowd will be ex-pat Kiwis that now call the Gold Coast home. Shaun Johnson got the Warriors home when these sides met in New Zealand in round 17, but the Titans were asking passengers on the plane if they wanted to play in the backline for that game. They cobbled a team together and almost won. I think the tables turn on Sunday.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result - Warriors 24 defeated Titans 14

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

Luke Brooks is out for the Tigers, but Jason Taylor can't find a place in his heart or his team for Robbie Farah. There's some speculation he may end up at the Rabbitohs next season. Like sands through the hourglass et cetera et cetera. The Cowboys have, but for one winger and one future immortal, named their strongest seventeen, and $1.45 for the Cowboys looks okay to me. Make sure you tune in if you can. If the weather is fine a footy game at Leichhardt on a Sunday afternoon is about as good as it gets.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result - Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 14

Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters – Monday night – Pepper Stadium

Rightly or wrongly, I'm trying to get a read on this game based on these sides performances over the Broncos. The Panthers beat the Broncos 31-12 in Brisbane two weeks ago and last week the Roosters beat the Broncos 32-16 in Sydney. On that alone, there's probably not much between the sides. These sides met in round seven where the Panthers prevailed 20-16. It was three tries apiece that day and it was the goal-kicking of Jamie Soward that proved the difference. That Roosters team were missing Pearce, Cordnor and Taukeiaho and it's clear the Roosters have gradually improved as the season has progressed. The round seven Panthers included a number of players that we won't see on Monday night - Soward, Te Maire, Hiku and McKendry, although they have unearthed a rich talent in Nathan Cleary since then. Perhaps goal-kicking proves the difference again - Cleary vs Taukeiaho - I can see Cleary now the rain has gone.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result - Panthers 38 defeated Roosters 18

Wally Lewis - round twenty-two selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • Dragons vs BRONCOS
  • Eels vs SEA EAGLES
  • Knights vs BULLDOGS
  • SHARKS vs Raiders
  • STORM vs Rabbitohs
  • TITANS vs Warriors
  • Tigers vs COWBOYS
  • PANTHERS vs Roosters

Mark ashford if it rains what are the broncos like in the rain wil they change there tactics.

They do have some important players back u think they should play out there sets and let them come out from there line .

Get back to basics they your team has great ball players Milford and hunt have to take on the line and let the backs do there stuff that's what they were doing at the start of the year.

I think sam thiaday will add more starch in the middle.

Seaeagle47's picture

Give it a rest Christine, its a footy tipping forum not the womans weekly.

Coach Potato's picture

Would you like a quick pre game stat Rocket?
Too bad ready or not here it is.

Every team that has got done nil and then played the same team again, has come back and won.

Well its only happened two times including tonight, but it's 100% so far. There have been 4 games where a team got nil. 2 of them were Newcastle, and they didn't get to play the team again. The other was Tigers scoring nil against Parra, who turned it around recently big time. Can the Dragons turn around their nil against the Broncos? They must be a chancez and here is why.

Teams clearly remember the games where they scored nil.

Dragons players remember the last time. That's the worry for all the Broncos fans.

BroncoSwimmer's picture

Coach, put me down for the Cowboys this week, I'm pretty sure I have not done them yet.

mark ashford's picture

Coach enjoyed your Hayne/Mundine (and the spell check) quip.
The Hayne hype continues and really I wish him well and the Titans.
IMO Hayne during his earlier stint in RL was either brilliant or woeful.
As far as fullbacks go I would prefer Billy Slater, Darrius Boyd, James Tedesco and maybe some others over Hayne purely on their consistency.
My player of the moment (Coach you'll like this) is Josh Mansour.
Has been a stand out all year. If other clubs don't fear him they do so at their peril.
At 6 foot (in the old scale) and a 100kg he's the best winger in the comp.

Tailspin's picture

Well here we go again, Listen peoples, everyone has problems, I say best you keep them to yourself or go visit lifeline cause they care!!!!!
As far as bagging the shit out of other teams, who bloody cares, grow up people, it happens all the bloody time. If you are that soft and cant take a bit of shit here and there, maybe you should go find a softball site or take a trip down to the Blue oyster bar and look for a shoulder to cry on. I personally like this site where everyone has a say of what they are feeling and their perspective of the game. Its pretty easy, if you don't like it go somewhere else, if you like a bit of banter and here it is, get prepared, with NO repercussions, then join in, stir a bit of shit and have a bit of fun. You can do all this, have a good laugh, enjoy life, just don't step over the boundary, and if you are an adult with common sense, you know the limits. I really cant see why a few of you get so uptight. Try taking a chill pill, a bucket of rum and coke, maybe that might help. And guess what, I hate Manly also, but news flash everyone, so does 95% of the world, but who cares, if you like them, good luck to you. If someone hates Cowboys, I couldn't give a rats ass. So to the end of that, hope you all enjoy a great weekend of the greatest game of all, and here are my tips.
Broncos to finally have a win by 14
Eels by 4
Dogs by 16
Raiders by 4
Storm by 24
Titans on a roll by 8
Cowboys by 24
Roosters by 8
P.S. Hey coach ya marsh mellow, can you put up the knockout picks please as all this philosophy has frazzled my brain a bit.

christine's picture

Fortress you & all your manly supporter buddies are the ones causing problems on this site , & if you guys were any good at tipping you wouldn't be worried about what you can get in money from winning the tipping comp on this site no offence there thinker but I have one three comps how many have you won ?

Tailspin's picture

Sorry Thinker and TLP if I over stepped the line, but bloody hell.
P.S. how dare you delete comments from your site and aren't on the site 24/7. Tisk tisk, you should be ashamed of yourself :)

mark ashford's picture

Coach if the Dragons score "nil" again tonight what will that do to your stats.
Just checked our tipping thingy above and it appears you have them on your own.
Very brave Coach. BUT again if you've called it right, I'll be the first.
Whoever wins do you think they'll congratulate the other team?

BroncoSwimmer's picture

I like the sound of that Seaeagle47.....

Tailspin's picture

See Christine, there you go. I don't think they are, I just think they need to harden up and cop a few on the chin, its not a blame game, just needs to make it fun. Give me all you got fortress, I think I can take it without slitting my wrists :)

BroncoSwimmer's picture

Hello Christine, I have read an awful lot of posts this season, and some of your comments are quite cheeky.

mark ashford's picture

Tailspin, that's what we like some good old fashioned passion.
That's what we're here for.
That's why I like Fortress and his pals.
I don't hate Manly (or any other team) but love to see that raw aggression.
I love Broncs, Cowboys & Storm. I guess it's just a NSW -v- the rest thing.

christine's picture

Mark don't you find storm are a protected species , they get away with things other teams wouldn't , Yes broncos swimmer my father has a sense of humour which I get from him my mother had none & mark today would be my mums birthday even though she died .

BigPeteBx's picture

Big HELLO to you also Fortress and E/Rocks.
Lets just hope J. Hayne bounces the ball over the try line, each time he crosses.
Well, until his RL and Rugby techniques kick back in.
I'm baffled as to how he can play this late in the current 2016 season, bearing in mind, the cut off date would have been yonks ago.

Tailspin in the blue oyster bar be careful, something tells me you might come across big Pete the poor bastard has forgotten where he lives, somewhere south of Port Moresby, you will know who he is he will have his eagles jersey from 1957 on.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Coach heaps of tipsters will avoid the couch for yet another week.

mark ashford's picture

Chris Storm were not a protected species a couple of years ago when stripped of 2 grand finals, 2 minor premierships fined a $mill and forced to play all year for no points due to cap over payments.
IMO they are probably the most professional team and best coached in the comp.
The NRL needs to keep a foothold in Melbourne the home of AFL and the Storm do it well.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Jump on cowboy a free pass to next week.

Looking forward to tonights footy

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Dragons by 2- Dragons' desperation to get them over the line. Even though they're without their star second rowers, the mighty Dragons to get a tight win over the Broncos to keep their slight chance of making the finals footy alive.

Manly by 16- Manly to keep the streak going by getting a big win over a Parramatta side who do get some stars back but still are very depleted.

Bulldogs by 7- The Knights to really give it to the Dogs, but the Bulldogs to get the win here. In my eyes, what I have seen in the last couple of weeks, the Bulldogs aren't a top 8 side, they aren't consistent enough that teams like the Sharks, Storm, and Raiders are. But for the Knights, it has been a very tough season for them, they'll lose yet another game.

Sharks by 7- Sharks to get the win here in what should be a cracking game between two top 4 sides.

Storm by 22- Storm to smash the Rabbitohs here.

Titans by 4- Dunno if Hayne is playing or not but either way I think that the Titans will win or at least have a big chance to winning this one. They do have Peats back which is a huge plus for them.

Cowboys by 8- Cowboys to get the win only because Brooks isn't playing for Tigers and I don't know if the halves will gel for the Tigers in this one.

And finally... the Panthers by 1- The panthers to win in an absolute thriller.

Awesome. That's done. Should be a great week of footy. Good luck to everyone's teams and tips. Cheers and finally go the mighty Dragons. I still have faith in you guys especially after last week's performance, but in saying that, we do have Frizell and Thompson this week, so it'll be hard this week against the Broncs who have pretty a full strength team.

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Pretty much* a full strength team.

Holy shit Rocket, I wasn't planning on going to the bar. Big pete, best of luck to you mate, whatever floats your boat :) And thanks tigerholic, see, now that's funny shit. Rice nuts, Im still on the floor laughing.

BigPeteBx's picture

I guess now Mark - you'd have to include, just over the border - Titans.

But Mark, many do hate Manly - WHY????
The so-called Silvertails bought other clubs players with hard cash.
Money that some clubs couldn't find back in The 1970's into early 80's.

Arko was a very astute Club Mgr and knew what he was on about.
He built an empire for rugby league. I admire the man because it occurs today BIG TIME, or you don't survive.

Thanks for the kind comments towards us.

Rocket Ryan likes to stir the possum and get us all biting. He has to be No.1 S/Stirrer on this site.

Christine made a post where Fortress and his Manly mates on this site start all the trouble. Doubt it mate - I for one haven't tried it and if I did, I'd probably be red carded and recommended to Thinker to be suspended - because I AM MANLY and just a newcomer here.

Cheers mate and good luck tonight. I've got The Couch riding on this.

Tailspin's picture

Titans for me thanks Coach.
Very impressed with these boys efforts lately, definitely in the top 8 end of year. Hope jarrod doesn't bring them down.

Coach Potato's picture

Tailspin and Broncswimmer, Dragons win for you and you're the only ones left

Tailspin's picture

Hey mark, I was a broncos fan until cowboys came along, so I guess they are my second team and yes it could be a QLD/NSW thing, but that makes it all the better, and I think the broncos have the wood on dragons, ever since they beat them in a grand final way back and Alfie got up and sang dragons cant play football :) I think he had 47 beers under his belt at the time.

Tailspin - Rocket wouldn't have a hope in hell of knowing what each tipper's likes or dislikes were.
He just does the rounds and tries to get his weekly satisfaction of throwing up dirt and stirring.

He's the captain Harris of us all. Dont need to worry about what floats my boat mate. I certainly wont let my daughter read that post of Rockets. I know where I am and who I am mate.

But I do say that if it is Rocket who lives 200 kms from Townsville, then he his closer to Port Moresby than what I am.

Cheers Tailspin

Big Pete
