Round twenty two selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – WIN Stadium

Two teams that, on form, appear to be in a race to the bottom. The Dragons have a head start, while the Broncos have time to turn their ship around if they can. Right now I'm not sure how seaworthy the Broncos vessell is. I'm reminded of those boats they make out of strapped together beer cans for charity events. They do get three international forwards back on Thursday night, while the Dragons lose (I think) their two best forwards in Thompson and Frizell. The Dragons had everything to play for last week, and while they tried a few more things in attack against the Bulldogs, they still only managed 10 points. Given the leakage from the Broncos in defence of late (161 points conceded in five games) the Dragons may have more luck here. Clearly I have no confidence in either side at the minute, but I'm giving the Broncos one more chance (keen observers will note I've been saying that about the Broncos for at least a month).

Verdict – Broncos by 2

Result - Broncos 12 defeated Dragons 8

Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

I was all set to tip the Eels this week. Three important inclusions in Ma'u, Scott and Jennings, and the Eels hatred for the Sea Eagles runs deeper than most. A win here and they all but end the Sea Eagles hopes of a finals campaign. I thought all that would be enough, and it still might be. In the end, two things changed my mind:

  1. This isn't the Eels last game at Pirtek this season (and when that day arrives in round 25 the Eels will fly like Superman); and
  2. I had a look at the Eels line-up that beat the Sea Eagles in round seven (22-10). That team included Norman, Foran, Peats, Paulo and Radradra. This team on Friday night will not.

The Sea Eagles went close in round seven (they actually led until around the 70th minute). Given that their season is on the line, and their remaining games after this one look frightening, I've come full circle and I'm doing the Eagle Rock for one more round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 7

Result - Eels 10 defeated Sea Eagles 9

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

The Knights will win another game this season. Their draw isn't too bad and they still have their 'old boys' game...but they won't be winning this.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 20

Result - Bulldogs 28 defeated Knights 14

Cronulla Sharks vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

A quick turnaround from an extra time draw for the Sharks and the Raiders are in a rich vein of form. There are many that think the premiership is a three-horse race, and the green machine would like nothing more than to knock off one of those three. When the Raiders are playing well they are a delight to behold, and I've loved watching their development this season. But (there's always a but), I can't tip them this weekend. They'll be packed to the rafters on Saturday night, and with the minor premiership on the line the boys in blue won't be losing their last two home games this season. Note that the Sharks did play the Raiders in Canberra earlier in the year, and it was a towel-up. This won't be a towel-up, but the Sharks can maintain their 'not losing streak' for another round.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Raiders 30 defeated Sharks 14

Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – AAMI Park

I have an image in my head of Storm coach Craig Bellamy, dressed up as Elmer Fudd, hunting rifle in hand. "It's rabbit season". Inglis returns in the halves for the red and green but it's too late baby now it's too late...though they really did try to make it. The Storm don't need to work on their points differential, given the Sharks are on an odd number and the Storm are on an even number, but they'll be unleashing a wave of purple fury on Saturday night. A clinic.

Verdict – Storm by 40

Result - Storm 15 defeated Rabbitohs 14

Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

Channel Nine must be annoyed. They've given this game to Fox Sports, which was a perfectly cromulent decision until the Hayne plane landed at the Gold Coast Airport. Suddenly the delays around the re-signing of Titans fullback David Mead make more sense. If Hayne plays (and he may not) I assume Mead shifts to one wing and perhaps Macdonald to the bench given his utility value and the possibility that Hayne does a hamstring the first time he tries to stretch out. This was going to be a big game anyway, but there's a whole other dimension at play now. Both sides are playing well and both sides are backing up from golden point games. Golden point has become habit-forming for the Warriors in recent weeks and this looks like the sort of game that could go the same way. They'll just about sell the joint out on Sunday afternoon, and almost half the crowd will be ex-pat Kiwis that now call the Gold Coast home. Shaun Johnson got the Warriors home when these sides met in New Zealand in round 17, but the Titans were asking passengers on the plane if they wanted to play in the backline for that game. They cobbled a team together and almost won. I think the tables turn on Sunday.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result - Warriors 24 defeated Titans 14

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

Luke Brooks is out for the Tigers, but Jason Taylor can't find a place in his heart or his team for Robbie Farah. There's some speculation he may end up at the Rabbitohs next season. Like sands through the hourglass et cetera et cetera. The Cowboys have, but for one winger and one future immortal, named their strongest seventeen, and $1.45 for the Cowboys looks okay to me. Make sure you tune in if you can. If the weather is fine a footy game at Leichhardt on a Sunday afternoon is about as good as it gets.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result - Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 14

Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters – Monday night – Pepper Stadium

Rightly or wrongly, I'm trying to get a read on this game based on these sides performances over the Broncos. The Panthers beat the Broncos 31-12 in Brisbane two weeks ago and last week the Roosters beat the Broncos 32-16 in Sydney. On that alone, there's probably not much between the sides. These sides met in round seven where the Panthers prevailed 20-16. It was three tries apiece that day and it was the goal-kicking of Jamie Soward that proved the difference. That Roosters team were missing Pearce, Cordnor and Taukeiaho and it's clear the Roosters have gradually improved as the season has progressed. The round seven Panthers included a number of players that we won't see on Monday night - Soward, Te Maire, Hiku and McKendry, although they have unearthed a rich talent in Nathan Cleary since then. Perhaps goal-kicking proves the difference again - Cleary vs Taukeiaho - I can see Cleary now the rain has gone.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result - Panthers 38 defeated Roosters 18

Wally Lewis - round twenty-two selections (in bold)

  • Eels vs SEA EAGLES
  • Knights vs BULLDOGS

Mark we ground it out, but really put that effort against a team of contenders and the boys would have been destroyed. The last penalty was deserved, and more so it is something we need out of the game, the mind set of giving away penalties to stop tries.

mark ashford's picture

Fortress, I feel your pain mate that was a disgrace.
Are the refs feeling sorry for Parra because they lost points by cheating?
Never seen more bullshit penalties awarded in a club game.

Footy chick's picture

Hello Coach

14 for me thank you.
xx

Baggy_Gee's picture

No one feels sorry for parra, it was just terrible calls each way.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy Toupou took the guy he thought was getting the ball in a very tight ruck. There was no space between the attacking players and happens in almost every game.
It was a rubbish penalty, and I'll stand by that.
Your Eels played their hearts out and showed they will be a force next year, but not tonight mate, the refs got them home.

mark ashford's picture

Coach you don't like the Sea Eagles or the Eels.
Any comments on he game?

Coach Potato's picture

Sounding a bit cranky rhere Fortress - well one of the Fortresses anyways.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I get the why, I'm irate here as well. Matt is a terrible ref, and should be demoted back to the local under 8's comp.

mark ashford's picture

Coach, that's it? I just hope your panthers aren't robbed by the refs in any games left this season.

Coach Potato's picture

Was a tough, willing game. Parra bombed about three tries and I didn't count that many for Manly although the one that French intercepted was a miracle.

Definitely one of those games where it would not be fair to say one team was better. Both teams defended well but defence ain't gonna win the comp this year.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I was beside myself when French did that. Still a lot of under 20's in his system. Fortunately bit came off and he saved the try. But far far to close for comfort.

Coach Potato's picture

Hey Thinker would you be comfortable telling that Parra was t he better team because they got an extra point and because the game didn't have to go into extra time? If you don't actually agree, know that I completely understand.

The biggest issue is that these close games become the most horribly refereed.

The amount of penalties that went unblown was the only disgrace I saw, (followed by the sour grapes comments afterwards). Get it through your heads refs, the flow of the game is not up to you to control. Just the officiating. If there's 40 indisrections committed, that means 40 penalties. Shit of a bloody gamebut, I know, but some games will be like that and that's how that is. Standing offside all night because you know the ref won't blow it. That's the bad thing that came out of last night.

Coach Potato's picture

14? So shouldn't there be 12 more x's ?

Oops.
Sorry.
14.
Got it.

a's picture

Eels vs Manly game was crap

Coach Potato's picture

Mark, it was unlucky.
Tapou was committed.
He did end up taking a player out without the ball which is an offence if it's off the ball , as the refs ruled. But how could he be off the ball if he could easily have been passed the ball - but just didn't.

Taufua was grounded ingoal as Baggy mentioned and lots of stuff both ways that just went unchecked.

The biggest laugh was at the start where Scott got penalised for having his head rubbed, and then got cautioned for rubbing someone else's.

Sydney 2000 that is.

Tailspin's picture

Well I'm glad the Eels won, mainly because I picked them :) even though it was a shit game.

fortresseagle's picture

how the hell was that a pena;ty tpo parramatta.........The pass was forward, the reciever knocked on,the player who was supposed to have been tackeled without the ball came through after the play had finished.

a disgracefull decision i mean if anyone here can hounestly come on here and tell me that was a penalty than they are worse that inept poor excuse of a fref that contro;;ed the game last night.

parramatta didnt go to play footy knowing that all the sentiment will be enough to get hem over the line. They could do what they pleased as matt checchin came calling to there needs.

we live to fight anpther day i know it will be hard from now on,but i will never give up on my team there are still games that coul;d gom opur way and where there is life there is hope.

to everyone on here better take a deep breath if matt checchin is referering your teams game, you might end up feeling just the way im feeling today .

go the mighty sea eaglesssssssssssssss

Hey BigPete, Tassie is a fantastic place, full of history, recommend it to everyone. The XXX beer is awesome but you cant get it out of Tassie which is a bloody shame. I did sample a fair few down there and have to say I enjoyed all of them. Looking forward to the Raiders/Sharks game, would be good to see Raiders knock them over.

Tailspin's picture

Hey fortress, It wasn't that long ago when a refs call cost cowboys a final, and come to think about it, that was against Manly. What comes around goes around I guess. So, if the ref obviously makes a wrong decision, why cant the Bloody U beaut Bunker override it and make the correct call, and another thing, if the ref cannot see if a player has scored a try, then why should he have to make a call????? This pisses me off to no end.

BigPeteBx's picture

Agree Mark - I picked a two point margin for the game because I knew it would be close. No walk in the park.

Bloody Show Pony refs.
They are f - - -ing the NRL along with the at times, dope smoking piss heads in The Bunker

My bitch and that's it.

A not so happy - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

I'm glad Baggy you also saw it.
U seem to be a better Parra fan, than some I've met.

Bring Harrigan back to revitalise the NRL.
Bill might have been up himself at times, but he still knew his job and did it extra good.
He was always up with play and that was when one ref (without a lairy pink shirt) controlled the game.

Big Pete

doggie's picture

Hey bigpete, ease up on the dope smoking pissheads. making me feel guilty. My view, no penalty.

BigPeteBx's picture

Morning Coach - not cranky here just not real happy for now.

Refs are ruining the quality of NRL.

I hope your Panthers don't get jinxed by their same shit.

If Manly exits, I'll have my heart there for Panthers and Sharks.
NRL needs change and would be nice to see Sharkies win their first, irrespective of who plays with them and is disliked in some circles.

Big Pete

tigerholic's picture

Apparently there were thousands of Sea Eagles washed up on beaches all across Australia, they all had blue and yellow stripes across their chests and all had tears frozen in the corner of their eyes.

Tough game to lose Fortress and big pete and Seaeagle 47, those losses are that makes you a more passionate supporter of your club, for me it is another correct tip.

Cheers

Coach, I think the Aussies will get about 2 golds. You must have a decent swimmer or something :)

The Thinker's picture

There is a XXX in Brisbane - there's only two places you can get it....I believe.

The Milton Brewery (not a bad spot for a drink before a game at Lang Park)
The Breakfast Creek Hotel

Beer out of wooden kegs - hard to find these days.

I suspect the XXX you are talking about is a different beast.

Another analysis from the above stat is that only Canberra and Penrith have beaten two top 8 teams twice ,(given that Parra would otherwise be sitting next to Broncos on 26). That's a surprise to me, in regard to the expert's current list of title contenders.

Coach Potato's picture

Hey Gary from Chester, when is England gonna vote it's way out of the UK and show the world what an average sporting nation you are?

Question for me is how do four different countries sing one National anthem?

Seems to have forever contravened the conventions of Olympic Games /Commonwealth Games/ Rugby League and many other sports.

When's the referendum set down for this buddy?
(And how will you be voting,?)

The Thinker's picture

Greetings Olympics enthusiasts

The winner of the Olympic medal tally comp run by Coach (it probably has a name....sorry Coach)....wins a $25 NRL shop voucher.

Good luck to those taking part....hopefully these Olympics run relatively smoothly.

Can't believe that a pom is giving us a chance to win even 2 gold medals. I think that our women and men's teams in the velodrome will carry our gold medal haul. But Cav should destroy the field on the track.

No matter.
Maybe next time.

Pencilled down as a loss hey Rocket?

How funny that it's not just team rivalry, but the effect on you own teams's chances which is behind your tipping. Who would have thought, Broncos needing results to go their way. Laugh a minute Rocket.

WTF the Bulldogs lost to Eels twice

Coach Potato's picture

Pele huh?
No Nostrodamus'es that's for sure.

Baggy_Gee's picture

We are a worthy chance next year, and we can put in a showing even missing a few MIL in players. Still not impressed by last night though.

mark ashford's picture

OK Coach you have shamed me into it.
I'll match thinkers generous off and make the prize a $50 NRL voucher.

Thinker can you email your bsb & acc and I'll send straight away.

mark ashford's picture

That should read "generous offer"

Coach Potato's picture

Yes a, and thanks somehow I had Bulldogs beating Parra rtwice which is obviously wrong.

Coach Potato's picture

Considering Warriors wouldn't be in the 8 if Eels were there, then it's just Panthers who have beaten two top 8 teams. Go team.
