Round twenty two selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – WIN Stadium

Two teams that, on form, appear to be in a race to the bottom. The Dragons have a head start, while the Broncos have time to turn their ship around if they can. Right now I'm not sure how seaworthy the Broncos vessell is. I'm reminded of those boats they make out of strapped together beer cans for charity events. They do get three international forwards back on Thursday night, while the Dragons lose (I think) their two best forwards in Thompson and Frizell. The Dragons had everything to play for last week, and while they tried a few more things in attack against the Bulldogs, they still only managed 10 points. Given the leakage from the Broncos in defence of late (161 points conceded in five games) the Dragons may have more luck here. Clearly I have no confidence in either side at the minute, but I'm giving the Broncos one more chance (keen observers will note I've been saying that about the Broncos for at least a month).

Verdict – Broncos by 2

Result - Broncos 12 defeated Dragons 8

Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

I was all set to tip the Eels this week. Three important inclusions in Ma'u, Scott and Jennings, and the Eels hatred for the Sea Eagles runs deeper than most. A win here and they all but end the Sea Eagles hopes of a finals campaign. I thought all that would be enough, and it still might be. In the end, two things changed my mind:

  1. This isn't the Eels last game at Pirtek this season (and when that day arrives in round 25 the Eels will fly like Superman); and
  2. I had a look at the Eels line-up that beat the Sea Eagles in round seven (22-10). That team included Norman, Foran, Peats, Paulo and Radradra. This team on Friday night will not.

The Sea Eagles went close in round seven (they actually led until around the 70th minute). Given that their season is on the line, and their remaining games after this one look frightening, I've come full circle and I'm doing the Eagle Rock for one more round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 7

Result - Eels 10 defeated Sea Eagles 9

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

The Knights will win another game this season. Their draw isn't too bad and they still have their 'old boys' game...but they won't be winning this.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 20

Result - Bulldogs 28 defeated Knights 14

Cronulla Sharks vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

A quick turnaround from an extra time draw for the Sharks and the Raiders are in a rich vein of form. There are many that think the premiership is a three-horse race, and the green machine would like nothing more than to knock off one of those three. When the Raiders are playing well they are a delight to behold, and I've loved watching their development this season. But (there's always a but), I can't tip them this weekend. They'll be packed to the rafters on Saturday night, and with the minor premiership on the line the boys in blue won't be losing their last two home games this season. Note that the Sharks did play the Raiders in Canberra earlier in the year, and it was a towel-up. This won't be a towel-up, but the Sharks can maintain their 'not losing streak' for another round.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Raiders 30 defeated Sharks 14

Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – AAMI Park

I have an image in my head of Storm coach Craig Bellamy, dressed up as Elmer Fudd, hunting rifle in hand. "It's rabbit season". Inglis returns in the halves for the red and green but it's too late baby now it's too late...though they really did try to make it. The Storm don't need to work on their points differential, given the Sharks are on an odd number and the Storm are on an even number, but they'll be unleashing a wave of purple fury on Saturday night. A clinic.

Verdict – Storm by 40

Result - Storm 15 defeated Rabbitohs 14

Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

Channel Nine must be annoyed. They've given this game to Fox Sports, which was a perfectly cromulent decision until the Hayne plane landed at the Gold Coast Airport. Suddenly the delays around the re-signing of Titans fullback David Mead make more sense. If Hayne plays (and he may not) I assume Mead shifts to one wing and perhaps Macdonald to the bench given his utility value and the possibility that Hayne does a hamstring the first time he tries to stretch out. This was going to be a big game anyway, but there's a whole other dimension at play now. Both sides are playing well and both sides are backing up from golden point games. Golden point has become habit-forming for the Warriors in recent weeks and this looks like the sort of game that could go the same way. They'll just about sell the joint out on Sunday afternoon, and almost half the crowd will be ex-pat Kiwis that now call the Gold Coast home. Shaun Johnson got the Warriors home when these sides met in New Zealand in round 17, but the Titans were asking passengers on the plane if they wanted to play in the backline for that game. They cobbled a team together and almost won. I think the tables turn on Sunday.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result - Warriors 24 defeated Titans 14

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

Luke Brooks is out for the Tigers, but Jason Taylor can't find a place in his heart or his team for Robbie Farah. There's some speculation he may end up at the Rabbitohs next season. Like sands through the hourglass et cetera et cetera. The Cowboys have, but for one winger and one future immortal, named their strongest seventeen, and $1.45 for the Cowboys looks okay to me. Make sure you tune in if you can. If the weather is fine a footy game at Leichhardt on a Sunday afternoon is about as good as it gets.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result - Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 14

Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters – Monday night – Pepper Stadium

Rightly or wrongly, I'm trying to get a read on this game based on these sides performances over the Broncos. The Panthers beat the Broncos 31-12 in Brisbane two weeks ago and last week the Roosters beat the Broncos 32-16 in Sydney. On that alone, there's probably not much between the sides. These sides met in round seven where the Panthers prevailed 20-16. It was three tries apiece that day and it was the goal-kicking of Jamie Soward that proved the difference. That Roosters team were missing Pearce, Cordnor and Taukeiaho and it's clear the Roosters have gradually improved as the season has progressed. The round seven Panthers included a number of players that we won't see on Monday night - Soward, Te Maire, Hiku and McKendry, although they have unearthed a rich talent in Nathan Cleary since then. Perhaps goal-kicking proves the difference again - Cleary vs Taukeiaho - I can see Cleary now the rain has gone.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result - Panthers 38 defeated Roosters 18

Wally Lewis - round twenty-two selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • Eels vs SEA EAGLES
  • Knights vs BULLDOGS
  • SHARKS vs Raiders
  • STORM vs Rabbitohs
  • TITANS vs Warriors
  • Tigers vs COWBOYS
  • PANTHERS vs Roosters

#Wow that is generous Mark. Thanks.

#GaryChesterUK, you currently sit in the winning position, but there is no doubt you will be the first one to drop out.

Coach Potato's picture

Kitty Chiller, sounds like the fridge out the back that holds the cat food?

mark ashford's picture

You're welcome Coach. Can't have you and Thinker carrying all the weight.

Kitty Chiller = Very fast dog with big teeth.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy thanks for that. "The Great Escape" perhaps one of the best war movies ever made.
My dad (a UK WW2 vet, sadly no longer here) took me and my bro to see it when I was a little tacker.

BigPeteBx's picture

Now u r talking Thinker - beer out of wooden kegs/barrels.
In London near The Tower of London was a "pub" called The Tower Inn, it served the pommie ales, that same way.

Down near where I live, not from railways here, is a brewery (Two Heads) that just opened up in a former flour mill that has been gutted and refurbed. It has art gallery, coffee shop and all other tourism lures.

Precisely 2 blocks walk down my back lane and about a mile trying to get home. Of course as yet, I haven't been there.

Cheers - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Hey Tige -
yr tipping on last night was pure arse and guess.
Nah....sorry mate. You and Rocket must have paid the refs.

EPL in UK starts next weekend. I bet you follow Arsenal.

Cheers and make sure refs down railroad your final 8 chances.
Cowboys should actually start that as from tomorrow and then the refs can add to it.

Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Try predicting better than what you did Gazza.
Aussie swims could score 11 Golds in the pool alone.
Athletics one of my faves - we will be down 1, as no Sally Pearson .

Keep well mate and keep guessing.

Go The Devils on Monday in Community Shield.

Big Pete

Steel Panther's picture

Have never liked Checchin as a ref. He has absolutely zero people skills when it comes to talking to players. There's an air of arrogance about him. Not a mention on here though about one of the most embarrassing things to come out of the NRL this season......Tyson Frizzell's recent one match ban. IMHO one of the worst decisions ever out of the judiciary. Surely someone has some common sense??

BigPeteBx's picture

Coach -
Sorry Pele prediction never came off, as apparently Pele has been rather ill, leading up to the event.

Former marathon man de Lima, stepped in and did the honours.
Very colorful so far mate.

Cheers
Big Pete

a's picture

JT is going to play

mark ashford's picture

Yes Steel. Tyson lightly touched him on the chest as he tried to get around him and back on side.
There was no push or malice the guy was just trying to get around him.
Tyson gets a suspension and the likes of Josh Reynolds keeps playing after a deliberate trip (one of many)
Surely this rule was introduced to stop players approaching refs in a threatening manner and rightly so. The Klemmer/Graham incident last year is a perfect example.
Tyson did not threaten in any way.
As you say common sense has gone out the window.

Coach Potato's picture

They see themselves as untouchable, and they are taking it literally..

Harrigan still wearing his police hat onto the field was the one who led this new breed. To take a highway patrol attitude into each game. It's wrong. Ex coppers Harrigan and Archer will show as having created this monster.

Harrigan was originally in charge of the refs, but guess who is now?

Don't expect any changes overnight.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Wow the Knights are taking it to the Doggies.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Ah well what a shame. They went close, but the Dogs kicked away late.

mark ashford's picture

Yeah Baggy Knights stood up well.
Watching last nights game and todays it seems the massive Polynesians are taking over this game.
This year we introduced less interchanges to give the little guys a go.
It hasn't really worked. The big guys just get fitter.
I feel that in the next few years our comp may as well be Tonga v Fiji v NZ v anywhere else in the Pacific.

mark ashford's picture

Have a look at Sam Kasiano. Born in NZ moved to Brisbane as a teenager
played his junior footy in QLD and should have been a Maroon, in fact declared himself a Maroon.
Family intervened and he changed his availability to NZ.
How you NSW fans would have cried if he pulled on a Maroon jersey.

Coach Potato's picture

If he played junior footy in Qld why would NSW be crying? Sam seems to pass the Qld eligibility. NSW didn't stand in his way.

If he had been born in Macksville, played always in NSW including first graded footy for Hunter Sports High (Newcastle), then moved to Qld and turned his back on his NSW origins, that would be different.

Baggy_Gee's picture

That would be very hard to swallow. I hope that situations of that magnitude haven't happened.

Coach Potato's picture

umm Initials GI

Baggy_Gee's picture

SAY IT ISN"T SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am shocked, devastated that in his youth he should have been playing for us. What is the world coming to that a man would sell out his state for money and winning.

Coach Potato's picture

Sterlo was born in Toowoomba but had moved to NSW by the time he had started Kindergarten. Surely that's not the same. (Although I know I've said that before). The kid hadn't even so much as held a footy in his hands in the other state.

Coach Potato's picture

Are you takin the piss Baggy?
Surely yr heads not been in the sand for ten years.

Coach Potato's picture

Radradra is no groundbreaker

mark ashford's picture

Coach
Inglis played in QLD for Wavell State High School and then the Norths Devils he also played in the under 18's Brisbane Wombats (unfortunate name) making him eligible for QLD, which he chose.
The rules have since changed but it is as it is (as said by our famous coach)
You NSW wombats have just gotta get over it.
AND now your all salivating that Hayne will be back in the team next year. Just how many series did you win with Hayne in there?

Baggy_Gee's picture

I was just playing for laughs Coach. Actually Mark, I hope that JH (even the initials give me pain) isn't selected. It would be a massive step backwards to drop young talent from the state team just so that he could increase his pay day. That goes also for Farah, Jennings, and Gallon. We have the ability to chop and change to also choose the best and inform players yet we go with the old stand by's

Baggy_Gee's picture

Gah inform should be "in form". Damn my eyes.

Baggy_Gee's picture

How about a better example, the Sims boys. how are they able to oppose each other at state level?

Coach Potato's picture

That's not where he was first graded Mark and that's what the eligibility rule stipulates.

What about Matt Rogers. Born in Sydney moved to Qld when he was 12, but his father played for NSW and was one of the greats. How do you rip the heart out of your own father??

Coach Potato's picture

I haven't researched yet but I have a Kangaroo OriginTheory.
My suspicion is that State with the majority Kangaroo incumbents will be the State that wins Origin.

My suspicion is that Qld have dominated the Australian taam in the same way they have dominated Origin.

My suspicion with loads of NSW talent emerging and Qld greats at the end of their careers, that NSW are almost in a position to take most Kangaroo jumpers - and that will mean Origin glory.

GaryChesterUK's picture

Hi Coach, I see myself as British rather than English, so i hope we dont ever get that vote because like the EU one, sometimes idiots prevail! Also don't you guys have the same national anthem? :)

Pete my tips are ticking along nicely, including the Raiders here!

I've had a good bet on Storm -16 in the next. I think the storm will win the grand final this year!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Hopefully not Gary, we can do without another Storm victory. Back the Sharks and lets hope they can get their maiden victory.

Coach Potato's picture

I think the last time we sung God Save The Queen was back in the 70s.

GaryChesterUK's picture

GSTQ It is comfortably the worst national anthem in the world. I hate the Queen. Is yours now Waltzing Matilda?

Baggy_Gee's picture

The last time I saw God save the Queen sung, was at Wemblem Stadium '86. That was a pretty awesome group sing.

mark ashford's picture

Coach England is part of the UK that is duh the United Kingdom made up of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Recently Scotland tried to separate but was overwhelmingly defeated.
The UK has voted to separate from the EU. Not sure what effect it will have on the UK economy...time will tell.
The over riding reason for the vote was the UK almost unable to control emigration from foreign nationals (read alleged asylum seekers).
We are lucky in Australia being "girt by sea" and having some control of our borders.
I respect our current pollies and their border protection policies.
The UK is a very difficult place at the moment and their people need to be respected.
Sure we don't sing GSTQ anymore but have a little respect for one of our greatest allies.

mark ashford's picture

GARY I just read you hate the Queen. What a shameful admission. just hope you didn't say that because you're on an Aussie site.
Are you born and bred in the UK?

Coach Potato's picture

Thanks for the 5th class geography lesson Mark.
I think my point is lost on you, or else its the comprehension thing again.

So why isn:'t Australia ,NZ. PNG, and Fiji a Kingdom when it comes to the Olympics? Sammy Radradra would vote yes.

mark ashford's picture

Gary
I was born in the UK, Portsmouth and came to Aussie as an 18 month old toddler.
Took Aussie citizenship many years ago and am now a proud and fierce Aussie.
I love Australia but would never disrespect the Monarchy.
If we become a republic and turn our backs on the UK then that's ok with me but a big part of me will always be England, my birth place.

Coach Potato's picture

Ahh Mark, aren't you forgetting that people have the right to their own opinions, including being able to decide who they like and who they don't like?

GaryChesterUK's picture

Mark - I am an anti-royalist, I hate the queen, her family and the privilege that they stand for.

If we look at the latest member of the family, George, why should he be born into wealth and privilege beyond any of our wildest dreams whilst another child born on the same day may grow up without sufficient food or shelter. On top of all of this our taxes actually pay for them to live, and they are exempt from paying taxes themselves, so not only are they mega mega rich, they are then paid by us paupers, and don't have to pay into the same pot. It is completely unfair and surely one day soon will have to stop!

I am born and bred in the UK, I voted to remain in the EU and I fear you are right that immigration was what swung the balance. It seems that the majority of the population here were unable to ignore the propaganda of right wing politicians and press and actually see that immigration is a fantastic thing for the country, probably the best thing about the UK!

mark ashford's picture

Coach
Because it's simply not, it's simply not.
Had to repeat it just in case...you know.
The UK is united those places you mentioned are just RL rivals.

Coach Potato's picture

Repeat stance - they are separate countries with their own governments. I don't think they should be able to compete against the world as one.

mark ashford's picture

Jesus Gary
we are getting in deep here. Have you checked how much revenue the Monarchy brings into the UK every year via tourism.
And the fact from investments etc the Royal Family are pretty much self supporting.
Not to mention the numerous charities they support.
Easy to be a nay sayer my friend.

mark ashford's picture

Take your point Coach but it is as it is

GaryChesterUK's picture

England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland arn't sovereign states, so legally arn't countries.

The country is the UK; England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are constituent countries of the UK. Its messy and complex but in terms of sport it does get silly that in some sports they compete together and in others seperatel; I think that this is because fans of the football and rugby union teams for each of the countries wouldn't dream of giving up the seperate teams.

Coach Potato's picture

Oops. Sorry. Looks like I'm as devoid of knowledge about your country as you are of ours.

I'll take back the UK thing even though I think it's a flimsy cover. They show as countries on my map.

GaryChesterUK's picture

I think regardless of whether the monarchy brings money into the economy (perhaps this is true of London and the area around some of the palaces but not across the country) it is still outdated and unfair. Manchester United bring millions into the economy should we therefore let them off their taxes and pay them £30m a year for the privilege of having them?

Your argument is often made by those supporting the Royal Family, if they bring that much money in etc. all the more reason for us to say stand on your own two feet, the government doesn't need to give you money anymore and you can pay taxes like any other organisation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This looks like the old fashioned game of two halves!

GaryChesterUK's picture

Yeah coach its a strange situation for sure, in many respects they are their own countries, but legally are part of the Union!

Anyways, more important matters, what are you making of the game?
