Round twenty two selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – WIN Stadium

Two teams that, on form, appear to be in a race to the bottom. The Dragons have a head start, while the Broncos have time to turn their ship around if they can. Right now I'm not sure how seaworthy the Broncos vessell is. I'm reminded of those boats they make out of strapped together beer cans for charity events. They do get three international forwards back on Thursday night, while the Dragons lose (I think) their two best forwards in Thompson and Frizell. The Dragons had everything to play for last week, and while they tried a few more things in attack against the Bulldogs, they still only managed 10 points. Given the leakage from the Broncos in defence of late (161 points conceded in five games) the Dragons may have more luck here. Clearly I have no confidence in either side at the minute, but I'm giving the Broncos one more chance (keen observers will note I've been saying that about the Broncos for at least a month).

Verdict – Broncos by 2

Result - Broncos 12 defeated Dragons 8

Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

I was all set to tip the Eels this week. Three important inclusions in Ma'u, Scott and Jennings, and the Eels hatred for the Sea Eagles runs deeper than most. A win here and they all but end the Sea Eagles hopes of a finals campaign. I thought all that would be enough, and it still might be. In the end, two things changed my mind:

  1. This isn't the Eels last game at Pirtek this season (and when that day arrives in round 25 the Eels will fly like Superman); and
  2. I had a look at the Eels line-up that beat the Sea Eagles in round seven (22-10). That team included Norman, Foran, Peats, Paulo and Radradra. This team on Friday night will not.

The Sea Eagles went close in round seven (they actually led until around the 70th minute). Given that their season is on the line, and their remaining games after this one look frightening, I've come full circle and I'm doing the Eagle Rock for one more round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 7

Result - Eels 10 defeated Sea Eagles 9

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

The Knights will win another game this season. Their draw isn't too bad and they still have their 'old boys' game...but they won't be winning this.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 20

Result - Bulldogs 28 defeated Knights 14

Cronulla Sharks vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

A quick turnaround from an extra time draw for the Sharks and the Raiders are in a rich vein of form. There are many that think the premiership is a three-horse race, and the green machine would like nothing more than to knock off one of those three. When the Raiders are playing well they are a delight to behold, and I've loved watching their development this season. But (there's always a but), I can't tip them this weekend. They'll be packed to the rafters on Saturday night, and with the minor premiership on the line the boys in blue won't be losing their last two home games this season. Note that the Sharks did play the Raiders in Canberra earlier in the year, and it was a towel-up. This won't be a towel-up, but the Sharks can maintain their 'not losing streak' for another round.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Raiders 30 defeated Sharks 14

Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – AAMI Park

I have an image in my head of Storm coach Craig Bellamy, dressed up as Elmer Fudd, hunting rifle in hand. "It's rabbit season". Inglis returns in the halves for the red and green but it's too late baby now it's too late...though they really did try to make it. The Storm don't need to work on their points differential, given the Sharks are on an odd number and the Storm are on an even number, but they'll be unleashing a wave of purple fury on Saturday night. A clinic.

Verdict – Storm by 40

Result - Storm 15 defeated Rabbitohs 14

Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

Channel Nine must be annoyed. They've given this game to Fox Sports, which was a perfectly cromulent decision until the Hayne plane landed at the Gold Coast Airport. Suddenly the delays around the re-signing of Titans fullback David Mead make more sense. If Hayne plays (and he may not) I assume Mead shifts to one wing and perhaps Macdonald to the bench given his utility value and the possibility that Hayne does a hamstring the first time he tries to stretch out. This was going to be a big game anyway, but there's a whole other dimension at play now. Both sides are playing well and both sides are backing up from golden point games. Golden point has become habit-forming for the Warriors in recent weeks and this looks like the sort of game that could go the same way. They'll just about sell the joint out on Sunday afternoon, and almost half the crowd will be ex-pat Kiwis that now call the Gold Coast home. Shaun Johnson got the Warriors home when these sides met in New Zealand in round 17, but the Titans were asking passengers on the plane if they wanted to play in the backline for that game. They cobbled a team together and almost won. I think the tables turn on Sunday.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result - Warriors 24 defeated Titans 14

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

Luke Brooks is out for the Tigers, but Jason Taylor can't find a place in his heart or his team for Robbie Farah. There's some speculation he may end up at the Rabbitohs next season. Like sands through the hourglass et cetera et cetera. The Cowboys have, but for one winger and one future immortal, named their strongest seventeen, and $1.45 for the Cowboys looks okay to me. Make sure you tune in if you can. If the weather is fine a footy game at Leichhardt on a Sunday afternoon is about as good as it gets.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result - Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 14

Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters – Monday night – Pepper Stadium

Rightly or wrongly, I'm trying to get a read on this game based on these sides performances over the Broncos. The Panthers beat the Broncos 31-12 in Brisbane two weeks ago and last week the Roosters beat the Broncos 32-16 in Sydney. On that alone, there's probably not much between the sides. These sides met in round seven where the Panthers prevailed 20-16. It was three tries apiece that day and it was the goal-kicking of Jamie Soward that proved the difference. That Roosters team were missing Pearce, Cordnor and Taukeiaho and it's clear the Roosters have gradually improved as the season has progressed. The round seven Panthers included a number of players that we won't see on Monday night - Soward, Te Maire, Hiku and McKendry, although they have unearthed a rich talent in Nathan Cleary since then. Perhaps goal-kicking proves the difference again - Cleary vs Taukeiaho - I can see Cleary now the rain has gone.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result - Panthers 38 defeated Roosters 18

Wally Lewis - round twenty-two selections (in bold)

  • Eels vs SEA EAGLES
  • Knights vs BULLDOGS
  • SHARKS vs Raiders
  • STORM vs Rabbitohs
  • TITANS vs Warriors

coach your lucky i kind of like you look i thiought i had lost my picture i kept posting on my old post forgetting to log in on my new one are u satisfied.

i think your a great contributer to this site wanted to go on your coach comp but wasnt invited and im not sucking up to you if anyone wants to get me for that, just think that you do stir the pot but its fine it keeps it interesting with the manly boys and the so called losing games i dont know no one likes that to happen fron any players in any club.....i dont think they would do that they couldnt be that low but if they haver then throw the book at them i mean it no one player is bigger the the club.maybe at the the end of the year we will find out more if there were players involved than none of the players playing in the team now were involve im saying if it was then the players that have left but i dont want to slander my club as you woudnt yours.

i have tipped your mob to win this weekend better for muy team if you blokes lose but at penrith park i think in a tight affair your mob to just get the job done.

see coach im trying to get along with you but when u fire me up then im a different animal.

the game tonight could be closer than if it was on a dry track as was last nights game wher the broncos suffacated the drag queens,it was a great ploy by hunt and milford to play the game down there end.the ending was close but the broncos won and a win is a win.

yhe mighty eagles look more settled than parra i think our halves are going great guns, strangly last year in the rain on a bleak sunday we were upset by parra and that stopped our great run to the finals.will it happen again i dont think so,cheery evans will have much more control; tonite and the turbo tom and brother jake in great form with the forwards making easy yards for the backs to shine i can only see a mighty sea eagles victory in the wet by 14

bring it on boys and then later let the games begin with an aussie gold rush .

the fortress eagle flying to parramatta or as many people say whats the matter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fortresseagle's picture

Was just a curiosity question why you would need to have 3 names in 10 minutes. They all seem to work.

About your invite, the whole world was invited. Thats how ooen it was. Where you were 8 weeks ago when it started only you know the answer to. Please dont say I excluded you. Its just not true.

Tailspin's picture

Hey coach, I'll go 13 gold.
I really think the Eels are going to beat the Eagles, they have an awesome record against them and a home game.
Think they will put on a show for the home crowd, and since they cant make the finals, I hope they throw the ball around a bit.

Does Jamie Lyon have enough time to fly to Rio after the game to make the diving event? Does he know where he put his passport?

How does Dave make the diving team? Wouldn't he be in the 2*2 bucket KFC relay with young Konrad?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Looking forward to seeing how the northern beaches go when they all move to Egypt. Should be a cracking game tonight.

Baggy_Gee's picture

BigPeteBx's picture

No probs Miss Christine.
U r forgiven as Manly mates usually includes me.
I am very understanding of people and their medical conditions.
Besides, I am also very considerate of youth of the day.
I was involved with a PBC now PCYC, for over 17 years and we dealt with many types of kids and nationalities.
I have been on Boards of Mgt of 4 organisations and know what making decisions, for the right reasons is about.

Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony getting closer and I picked Pele over a month ago (Brazil's - Greatest Ever soccer player) to light the cauldron flame as last receiver/torchbearer in The Torch Relay. That fire also still burns within me, from Sydney 2000 Olympics Torch Relay.

Keep well and try have a nice weekend.

..........................................Hi Coach 8 for me please cheers.

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Doggie - I never made 1st Grade mate but knew the game well.
Just like I knew Ashley Klein's (NRLreferee) dad, when he worked as a bank accountant. Also knew Bill Harrigan when he was an NRL Ref and worked in NSW Police TRG.
You better hit me with it soon, with a surname that matches you.

We just might happen to know each other.

Keep well mate - Big Pete

mark ashford's picture

Coach i'd better get in now. Is 11 still available?

Baggy_Gee's picture

FFS, does this mean our win over Manly doesn't count? How much worse can this get. But the real question was who bet on the match. Manly players, or was it the officials.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Baggy - I know what u r getting at with the nursery grounds at clubs and bringing them on.
It hasn't change over time that clubs go for bigger names or better players to replace those who have retired/departed. Juniors and promising ones got left out, back then. So they went looking further to break into 1st Grade.
Eels, Manly, Penrith, Drags, just about all, before the restructure of league had good U/20's and Reserve Grade. Over a period of time I'd say Eels had the most Grand Final appearances in lower grades. Always, The Sulkowitz Bros rings bells.

Players needed more, just like English Super League and how our players migrate to a different style of play and quite likely retire after their working holiday.

Take also EPL Soccer, the price tag on heads today. Those players came from somewhere and moved about and there we speak in millions (Pounds, Euro, $'s). Times have changed though Baggy - players cost truckloads more.

Manly did then, what everyone has to do today.
It set the game on its toes and so did Packers Pyjama Game of Cricket (World Series).
Again for the sake of advancement and opening up new avenues in sport. But.......you have to have the cash, marketing, sponsors and support for it to happen, then you know u r on a winner.

Cheers mate - Big Pete

Baggy_Gee's picture

True, it's the fact that the game has gone to such a mercenary nature, that makes me sad. Back in the day Packer would never had a hope of playing again. Same as origin, players from nsw are declaring for QED so the get on the winning side.

BigPeteBx's picture

So does a pie and beer go hand in hand Doggie.
Remember the jingle mate - Football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars.

Cheers and a beer - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening Tailspin -
I think VB is the bigger seller in VIC, but I like a nice Carlton Draught down there myself. The Gold Crown in stubbies up here, is a nice drop also.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Matt checker you Roman barstard. That was tackled in goal. Arm down, French on top of him. Utter BS. Not manly players fixing games, it's that bloody Matt checker doing the betting.

BigPeteBx's picture

XXX from Tassie is a new one on me Tailspin.
Jimmy Boags and Cascade were always a nice brew on tap.
But it goes back to 1983 since that has been tested by myself.
Loved The Tassie and the pristine clear waters where a good brew comes from.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Get your fist off it, that was knocked even showed at speed

Baggy_Gee's picture

Interesting that the $10 million man has been tackled at least 3 times with the ball on tackle 5. Not a good game plan.

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening "a" -
firstly, many thanks for the points table you do on The Un-attached Tippers.

How does Dave Taylor make a diving team - bugger me there'd be no water left, if he hit the pond.

Cheers mate - yeah, I know u r having a quiet chuckle whilst you read that.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Hey Coach - count me in to.

16 is taken, as is 17 - so I'll go 18 mate.
Aust should increase its Gold medal count, but the overall count might go better than London. Maybe 10 more. Here's hoping anyway.

Cheers - Big Pete

These guys are really going at each other. A brutal game, is there history of dislike?
Beau (French origin meaning "sweetheart" what were his parents thinking?) Scott is an idiot. Should not be in the NRL. Just a grub.
BigPete, years ago when the beer strike was on (when was that) I drank heaps of Boags as it was all we could get in QLD came in funny little keg like stubbies. No xxxx, no vb, no tooheys but ended up liking it.
"Football, meat pies, kangaroos and holden cars" that was the Aussie I loved. Guess you'd call it "the good old days"

Baggy_Gee's picture

I agree with Pritchard, but directed at this piss poor excuse of a first grade ref.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Angry with the boys now. None of this Storm crap. Play for the win.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Na na nah nah, na na nah nah, hey hey, goodbye.

Ouch!!
4 out of 4 from here Manly.
Good luck but was always going to be long long bridge to cross.

No one in manly knows how to cross any bridges, let alone important ones.

Dead set Manly deserved to win that game. rubbish penalty in the last minute and plenty of others.
Coach, seriously would you have awarded that last penalty?
Baggy not taking anything away from your boys they played like a finals team.
But the refing is leaving me pissed off.

a's picture

Hi Coach put me down for 20 please

Baggy_Gee's picture

And Taupo hitting French off the ball was just set up?

I agree, the refing was terrible, but the play was pretty rubbish as well from both sides.
