Round twenty two selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – WIN Stadium

Two teams that, on form, appear to be in a race to the bottom. The Dragons have a head start, while the Broncos have time to turn their ship around if they can. Right now I'm not sure how seaworthy the Broncos vessell is. I'm reminded of those boats they make out of strapped together beer cans for charity events. They do get three international forwards back on Thursday night, while the Dragons lose (I think) their two best forwards in Thompson and Frizell. The Dragons had everything to play for last week, and while they tried a few more things in attack against the Bulldogs, they still only managed 10 points. Given the leakage from the Broncos in defence of late (161 points conceded in five games) the Dragons may have more luck here. Clearly I have no confidence in either side at the minute, but I'm giving the Broncos one more chance (keen observers will note I've been saying that about the Broncos for at least a month).

Verdict – Broncos by 2

Result - Broncos 12 defeated Dragons 8

Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

I was all set to tip the Eels this week. Three important inclusions in Ma'u, Scott and Jennings, and the Eels hatred for the Sea Eagles runs deeper than most. A win here and they all but end the Sea Eagles hopes of a finals campaign. I thought all that would be enough, and it still might be. In the end, two things changed my mind:

  1. This isn't the Eels last game at Pirtek this season (and when that day arrives in round 25 the Eels will fly like Superman); and
  2. I had a look at the Eels line-up that beat the Sea Eagles in round seven (22-10). That team included Norman, Foran, Peats, Paulo and Radradra. This team on Friday night will not.

The Sea Eagles went close in round seven (they actually led until around the 70th minute). Given that their season is on the line, and their remaining games after this one look frightening, I've come full circle and I'm doing the Eagle Rock for one more round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 7

Result - Eels 10 defeated Sea Eagles 9

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

The Knights will win another game this season. Their draw isn't too bad and they still have their 'old boys' game...but they won't be winning this.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 20

Result - Bulldogs 28 defeated Knights 14

Cronulla Sharks vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

A quick turnaround from an extra time draw for the Sharks and the Raiders are in a rich vein of form. There are many that think the premiership is a three-horse race, and the green machine would like nothing more than to knock off one of those three. When the Raiders are playing well they are a delight to behold, and I've loved watching their development this season. But (there's always a but), I can't tip them this weekend. They'll be packed to the rafters on Saturday night, and with the minor premiership on the line the boys in blue won't be losing their last two home games this season. Note that the Sharks did play the Raiders in Canberra earlier in the year, and it was a towel-up. This won't be a towel-up, but the Sharks can maintain their 'not losing streak' for another round.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Raiders 30 defeated Sharks 14

Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – AAMI Park

I have an image in my head of Storm coach Craig Bellamy, dressed up as Elmer Fudd, hunting rifle in hand. "It's rabbit season". Inglis returns in the halves for the red and green but it's too late baby now it's too late...though they really did try to make it. The Storm don't need to work on their points differential, given the Sharks are on an odd number and the Storm are on an even number, but they'll be unleashing a wave of purple fury on Saturday night. A clinic.

Verdict – Storm by 40

Result - Storm 15 defeated Rabbitohs 14

Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

Channel Nine must be annoyed. They've given this game to Fox Sports, which was a perfectly cromulent decision until the Hayne plane landed at the Gold Coast Airport. Suddenly the delays around the re-signing of Titans fullback David Mead make more sense. If Hayne plays (and he may not) I assume Mead shifts to one wing and perhaps Macdonald to the bench given his utility value and the possibility that Hayne does a hamstring the first time he tries to stretch out. This was going to be a big game anyway, but there's a whole other dimension at play now. Both sides are playing well and both sides are backing up from golden point games. Golden point has become habit-forming for the Warriors in recent weeks and this looks like the sort of game that could go the same way. They'll just about sell the joint out on Sunday afternoon, and almost half the crowd will be ex-pat Kiwis that now call the Gold Coast home. Shaun Johnson got the Warriors home when these sides met in New Zealand in round 17, but the Titans were asking passengers on the plane if they wanted to play in the backline for that game. They cobbled a team together and almost won. I think the tables turn on Sunday.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result - Warriors 24 defeated Titans 14

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

Luke Brooks is out for the Tigers, but Jason Taylor can't find a place in his heart or his team for Robbie Farah. There's some speculation he may end up at the Rabbitohs next season. Like sands through the hourglass et cetera et cetera. The Cowboys have, but for one winger and one future immortal, named their strongest seventeen, and $1.45 for the Cowboys looks okay to me. Make sure you tune in if you can. If the weather is fine a footy game at Leichhardt on a Sunday afternoon is about as good as it gets.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result - Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 14

Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters – Monday night – Pepper Stadium

Rightly or wrongly, I'm trying to get a read on this game based on these sides performances over the Broncos. The Panthers beat the Broncos 31-12 in Brisbane two weeks ago and last week the Roosters beat the Broncos 32-16 in Sydney. On that alone, there's probably not much between the sides. These sides met in round seven where the Panthers prevailed 20-16. It was three tries apiece that day and it was the goal-kicking of Jamie Soward that proved the difference. That Roosters team were missing Pearce, Cordnor and Taukeiaho and it's clear the Roosters have gradually improved as the season has progressed. The round seven Panthers included a number of players that we won't see on Monday night - Soward, Te Maire, Hiku and McKendry, although they have unearthed a rich talent in Nathan Cleary since then. Perhaps goal-kicking proves the difference again - Cleary vs Taukeiaho - I can see Cleary now the rain has gone.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result - Panthers 38 defeated Roosters 18

Wally Lewis - round twenty-two selections (in bold)

  • Eels vs SEA EAGLES
  • Knights vs BULLDOGS
  • SHARKS vs Raiders

Thinker I would like to stay on the site if that's ok with you but this gang up mentality has to stop & if you read the comments from last round you will see what i'm refering to ,i'm just a person that wants their voice heard ?

christine's picture

Thinker besides that I want to beat coach at his own comp .

Hi Christine, you need to be patient. Some of your comments are 10 mins apart. The Thinker is probably employed somewhere as well earning a quid. Hey I haven't stayed in touch with the comments so I don't know what you are upset about, but really just don't take things too personal. Let's face it some people on any site can be do contrary they can float upstream. There is no slack in your rope. Anyone who has a Dad who follows the Dragons plays good darts :-)

Rocket Ryan's picture

Christine you could be one of tigerholics wifes not sure whether you want to stay or go.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Righto coach I'll play my bower to avoid the couch this week.

fortresseagle's picture

Rain rain go away come back another day .

Can't wait for the footy this weekend time to really put the rorters in there place.

Gym here I come evening to all !!!!!!!!!! Eagles we dare!!!!!!!

The Thinker's picture

Christine,
It's up to you if you want to stay or go, but I'm not on the site all the time. This site is just a hobby and I'm not paid to be here. Whatever money I get from ads on the site barely covers the cost of keeping the server running, the tipping comp prizes and a couple of bottles of scotch for my helper buddy. That's about it. I'm here for the love of the game, to post a few thoughts about what I'm thinkering and give others a chance to do the same. That's all it is. Sadly I have another world I have to swim around in when I'm not here.

It's not personal if I haven't responded to you immediately after you have posted. People ask me stuff regularly, and it's often days before I respond. That's just the way it is.

The Thinker's picture

Breaking news: Jarryd Hayne has signed with the Titans - press conference at 10.30 this morning.

If he stays.....it's massive.

fortresseagle's picture

Come on Christine look I'm not been rude I understand what ur going through many times I have said people should resoect you read my past posts.

But this is a footy forum it's rugby league it will always be this way lots of passion and fire just blokes having a go .

I'm now just supporting my team and having fun. Just wanna get along I think your taking things far too personal on here.

If you feel it's too much and it's upsetting you take a break. Thinker gave you some great advice and you should respect that he said you can stay or leave.

But to be hounest with you we all have issues and personal problems I face them everyday.

I think just maybe your getting far too involved with people personally on here it's not like u know anyone like it's family.

I'm sorry Christine please don't take offence but your acting like your a mother on here.

I think we are grown up enough to do what we want,if coach and mark ashford wanna debate and have a go or anyone else as long as there is respect than why not.

To be hounest I have not seen any malice between mark and coach at all just footy talk and passion by two blokes who love there clubs neither giving a inch as long as there is respect.

Please Christine u are a valued person on this site but to keep asking thinker the same things over and over again and to keep telling people how to behave and what to and not what to say is a bit far fetched.

My advice take a break visit the site if u want to post then do so , if u don't than it's your call no one forces no one to be here I remember once you were asking for my head after I was wrongly accused of inciting violence towards you but not once you posted a thankyou after I stood up for you and spoke well of you.

Having favourites here won't help just be yourself and let people be,from what I see lots of people respect you on here, but if you keep going on and on and on I think people will start to think this is a do as I tell you site.

All resoect Christine do what u want to do ok.

Round 22 everyone and the nerves are already here so much tension u can cut it with a knife great games and match ups , who will survive , who will vanquish edge if the seat stuff I just hope I don't break my one this week.

Off to work good morning to all out there in footy land.................

The fortress about to fly and soar over the spit bridge!!!!!!!???????

fortresseagle's picture

Well I never he has signed with the titans great move in my mind I mean fair dinkum the parramatta club is a basket case no wonder.

Good luck to him great talent and the titans going great guns at the moment.

Cheers everyone ...........

Fortress eagle of the mighty eagles of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!

christine's picture

To all I will stay on site & just try to ignore some of the comments , thinker if hayne has signed with titans that is huge news & the only reason I got annoyed at all is because I have been on this site for a long time now & mark & coach went on about broncos / Penrith what seemed like weeks on end no one else could get a word in & fortress just remember I did get you & coach talking cause coach wasn't going to budge he's like that he's stubborn & so am I , I come from a kiwi , Scottish , dutch background .

The Thinker's picture

Hayne a likely starter for the Titans this weekend. Wow!

The Thinker's picture

Where's my potato buddy? Surely he's got something to say about this Hayne/Titans deal?

fortresseagle's picture

Good on you Christine that's the spirit I think the kiwi in you makes a survivor , have many kiwi mates great people and the Scottish in you gives u a sence of humour which you have.

Hope u win the coach comp your going great guns keep up the fight never ever give up and enjoy the footy and the Olympics hopefully heaos of gold medals for the Aussies.

Doing the tips later have a great day everyone and Christine smile life is too short mate.

Fortress eagle I'm just crazy bout the way you move !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doggie's picture

Titans odds on making the 8 plus even a premiership should shorten a bit im guessing.

christine's picture

Titans are all ready in the 8 .

Doggie's picture

Yes Christine, by 1 point and 5 rounds to go. I f warriors panthers and tigers win they drop to tenth.

mark ashford's picture

Hi all
This week I'll go;
Broncos
Sea Eagles
Sharks (is Maloney playing?)
Bulldogs
Storm
Titans (is Hayne playing?)
Cowboys
Roosters
If Hayne plays surely he'll come off the bench for a bit of game time and maybe run on next week or the week after.
He has supposed signed a 2 year deal commencing 2017.
So does he play the rounds this year for $0 or does he finish at the end of round 21 2018. (just kidding)
Sorry for the Parra fans but if I was in his boots I'd do the same $$$$

mark ashford's picture

OK Coach the time has come, wisely or not I'll take the Broncos in the couch comp.

mark ashford's picture

Christine, Scots, Kiwi and Dutch ancestry not only gives you stubbornness but a good helping of fire.
Don't worry if Coach and I have a bit of niggle it's all in fun.
Hayne is not as popular in QLD as in NSW but if he can regain his previous form will be formidable for the Titans.

Baggy_Gee's picture

How are the Titans under the cap? Bird, not cheap, Peats, not cheap on market price which they have to do. Mortimer would be moderately expensive. Is the NRL doing a bodge job to get the Titans and the population of the GC into the finals? Where is the accountability for a club run by the NRL. Sorry just a bit fired up. But I want numbers and answer from Todd as to the hows and EXACT cap position of the Titans.

The Thinker's picture

Baggy,
Obviously I'm not privy to all the details, but I do know the details for those two.

Bird is on $500,000 this season. The Titans got Peats for $150,000 for this season - a bargain really.

The Titans never really spent their Cherry-Evans money...and the rest of the squad is hardly a list of highly paid superstars.

Konrad Hurrell is playing for almost nothing in 2016.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy can't blame you. In years past Titans have flirted with the cap and basically gone into administration , now run by the NRL who is counting the dollars?
Sure they saved a motza by losing DCE but what has happened since.
Existing players upgraded etc.
Hope this isn't a bulls--t move just to get Hayne back in the game.
On the plus side I have heard Bird will return to Knights next year to finish his career and the rest of the players are happy to get $500 a week just to be on the Gold Coast

christine's picture

Mark my mum was the dutchie so with the ancestry I've got what chance do I have they are both head strong & stubborn as each other it's in the blood , but that's were I get the worrying from my mum was a worry wart & I get it from her as well as the ms .

christine's picture

Mark remember my ancestry don't mess with me I can turn fast on someone when annoyed but I can be a caring person to .

mark ashford's picture

Chris, I know I asked you this before.
you used to support the rabbits and then showed some support for the warriors and then the sharkies.
Who would you like to see win this year?

a's picture

Here are my tips

Broncos by 8 I think Broncos are going to strike back here

Sea Eagles by 2 I think Sea Eagles are going to win 5 in a row here

Bulldogs by 12 I think Bulldogs will continue Knights misery

Sharks by 1 I think Sharks are going to win in a thriller here

Storm by 20 Storm will win and win easily here

Titans by 6 with Hayne coming in Titans will make the top 4 here

Cowboys by 6 I think Cowboys will win with or without JT

Panthers by 4 I think Panthers will win

and Coach put me down for Broncos in your comp

Steel Panther's picture

Wow Konrad really is doing it tough these days. Over here they paid him in KFC.....

christine's picture

Mark when I was a souths member it was for my mum because she was in hospital after having a seizure on the day of the grand final I only showed interest in warriors because of luke going there but I haven't been supporting them at all & I have never been a sharks supporter but I do think it's going to be sharks year when I put a bet on the person that served me said her sister put a bet on sharks at the start of the season $20.00 @ $26.00 but i'm not a member of any club this year it's too hard when you have ms it hates heat , humidity , cold so you can't win it puts you in spasm though out your body .

mark ashford's picture

Steel Panther. Konrad may like his KFC but is getting some real money as well.
Apart from that he is playing well, can't understand why Warriors let him go.
Will be a big part of the Titans march to the finals.

mark ashford's picture

Coach? where are you? no comment on the Hayne thing?
I know you don't like the Eels or the Titans because of the cap.
Has it left you speechless?

christine's picture

My tips for rd 22
broncos
manly
bulldogs
sharks
storm
titans
cowboys
panthers
coach for my couch comp broncos

tigerholic's picture

Giddy Folks

We are now in August, how can a club sign a new player and play him this year. That would mean the Broncos could sign our mate Rocket and he could play this week , something wrong with the system even if the club can afford Hayne Plane.

Steel Panther's picture

Mark....Konrad's disgraceful behaviour on more than one occasion is why the club let him go. He had many chances but continued to bring the club into disrepute. An absolute star in the making at Under 20s level went on to be a clown prince with his antics on social media. If he gave half as much effort to his on field performance as he did to Twitter, Instagram etc. he would have had the game at his feet. Loved him as a player but not sad to see him go. The Warriors are bad enough without having players repeatedly in the spotlight for the wrong reasons!!!

tigerholic's picture

Coach

I'll take the Broncos to take care of the Dragons please

Coach Potato's picture

Fortress, "Christine please don't take offence but your acting like your a mother on here". That's gotta be the most offensive comment towards women all year. It offends me enough as a son and as a husband. Maybe next time you get to that bit about please don't take offence, you should know you are just seconds away from putting your mouth in it again.

Coach Potato's picture

*putting your foot in your mouth again that is

Baggy_Gee's picture

Since KFC were paying Konrad, in an obviously legal third party, was he getting more than his share of dodgy bunker calls go his way. Is there collusion between Konrad, the bunker, and KFC?

fortresseagle's picture

With all due respects to hayne a great talent. But in the past 2 years since the NFL and all his hopes and dreams and now playing for the titans. Are we going to go on and on and on and on about him . The media won't stop he is not the only player in the nrl.

And one more thing the mighty eagles have unearthed a future great tommy turbo and his brother jake and other talented young players from other clubs.

All the media talks about is jarred hayne , mr average Pearce and that has been benji Marshall.

Let's also put the spot light on other talents god now will never hear the end of it , it's a jarryd hayne ambush will all firget the finals.

Plus it's going to take him along time to get back in shape and his been out of the nrl for a whole.

My tips for round 22 are,

Mighty eagles

Broncos

Storm

Cowboys

Dogs

Panthers

Warriors

Sharks

Big hello to big Pete and eagle rocks.

Good luck everyone go the mighty sea eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Steel, I wasn't aware of Conrad's naughtiness over in NZ. Seems the NRL allows this sort of think as long as a player changes clubs.
Hope he has cleaned up his act.

Coach Potato's picture

Rocket, be honest,Broncos are no right bower, meaning that they beat anypne. Even the most die hard supporter would say if you made it past the next day, you did it playing a lowly ten of clubs.

fortresseagle's picture

Coach for your information I said to Christine we don't need people to tell people what to say and do on this site ok, I meant it in a way that I'm sure she didn't take offence.

Anyway I'm sick of all this immature behaviour coach let's talk footy ok , just talk footy and debate how u feel I'm sure there is enough footy talk to keep u going mate.

Good evening to all!!!!!

Fortress eagle of the mighty eagles

Ps coach instead of worrying bout everything that comes out of my mouth worry bout your team put more energies into your club.

That's what I do and that's what I love the mighty sea eagles and my club. A very good evening to you!!!!!!!!!!!!
