Round twenty two selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – WIN Stadium

Two teams that, on form, appear to be in a race to the bottom. The Dragons have a head start, while the Broncos have time to turn their ship around if they can. Right now I'm not sure how seaworthy the Broncos vessell is. I'm reminded of those boats they make out of strapped together beer cans for charity events. They do get three international forwards back on Thursday night, while the Dragons lose (I think) their two best forwards in Thompson and Frizell. The Dragons had everything to play for last week, and while they tried a few more things in attack against the Bulldogs, they still only managed 10 points. Given the leakage from the Broncos in defence of late (161 points conceded in five games) the Dragons may have more luck here. Clearly I have no confidence in either side at the minute, but I'm giving the Broncos one more chance (keen observers will note I've been saying that about the Broncos for at least a month).

Verdict – Broncos by 2

Result - Broncos 12 defeated Dragons 8

Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

I was all set to tip the Eels this week. Three important inclusions in Ma'u, Scott and Jennings, and the Eels hatred for the Sea Eagles runs deeper than most. A win here and they all but end the Sea Eagles hopes of a finals campaign. I thought all that would be enough, and it still might be. In the end, two things changed my mind:

  1. This isn't the Eels last game at Pirtek this season (and when that day arrives in round 25 the Eels will fly like Superman); and
  2. I had a look at the Eels line-up that beat the Sea Eagles in round seven (22-10). That team included Norman, Foran, Peats, Paulo and Radradra. This team on Friday night will not.

The Sea Eagles went close in round seven (they actually led until around the 70th minute). Given that their season is on the line, and their remaining games after this one look frightening, I've come full circle and I'm doing the Eagle Rock for one more round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 7

Result - Eels 10 defeated Sea Eagles 9

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

The Knights will win another game this season. Their draw isn't too bad and they still have their 'old boys' game...but they won't be winning this.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 20

Result - Bulldogs 28 defeated Knights 14

Cronulla Sharks vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

A quick turnaround from an extra time draw for the Sharks and the Raiders are in a rich vein of form. There are many that think the premiership is a three-horse race, and the green machine would like nothing more than to knock off one of those three. When the Raiders are playing well they are a delight to behold, and I've loved watching their development this season. But (there's always a but), I can't tip them this weekend. They'll be packed to the rafters on Saturday night, and with the minor premiership on the line the boys in blue won't be losing their last two home games this season. Note that the Sharks did play the Raiders in Canberra earlier in the year, and it was a towel-up. This won't be a towel-up, but the Sharks can maintain their 'not losing streak' for another round.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Raiders 30 defeated Sharks 14

Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – AAMI Park

I have an image in my head of Storm coach Craig Bellamy, dressed up as Elmer Fudd, hunting rifle in hand. "It's rabbit season". Inglis returns in the halves for the red and green but it's too late baby now it's too late...though they really did try to make it. The Storm don't need to work on their points differential, given the Sharks are on an odd number and the Storm are on an even number, but they'll be unleashing a wave of purple fury on Saturday night. A clinic.

Verdict – Storm by 40

Result - Storm 15 defeated Rabbitohs 14

Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

Channel Nine must be annoyed. They've given this game to Fox Sports, which was a perfectly cromulent decision until the Hayne plane landed at the Gold Coast Airport. Suddenly the delays around the re-signing of Titans fullback David Mead make more sense. If Hayne plays (and he may not) I assume Mead shifts to one wing and perhaps Macdonald to the bench given his utility value and the possibility that Hayne does a hamstring the first time he tries to stretch out. This was going to be a big game anyway, but there's a whole other dimension at play now. Both sides are playing well and both sides are backing up from golden point games. Golden point has become habit-forming for the Warriors in recent weeks and this looks like the sort of game that could go the same way. They'll just about sell the joint out on Sunday afternoon, and almost half the crowd will be ex-pat Kiwis that now call the Gold Coast home. Shaun Johnson got the Warriors home when these sides met in New Zealand in round 17, but the Titans were asking passengers on the plane if they wanted to play in the backline for that game. They cobbled a team together and almost won. I think the tables turn on Sunday.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result - Warriors 24 defeated Titans 14

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

Luke Brooks is out for the Tigers, but Jason Taylor can't find a place in his heart or his team for Robbie Farah. There's some speculation he may end up at the Rabbitohs next season. Like sands through the hourglass et cetera et cetera. The Cowboys have, but for one winger and one future immortal, named their strongest seventeen, and $1.45 for the Cowboys looks okay to me. Make sure you tune in if you can. If the weather is fine a footy game at Leichhardt on a Sunday afternoon is about as good as it gets.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result - Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 14

Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters – Monday night – Pepper Stadium

Rightly or wrongly, I'm trying to get a read on this game based on these sides performances over the Broncos. The Panthers beat the Broncos 31-12 in Brisbane two weeks ago and last week the Roosters beat the Broncos 32-16 in Sydney. On that alone, there's probably not much between the sides. These sides met in round seven where the Panthers prevailed 20-16. It was three tries apiece that day and it was the goal-kicking of Jamie Soward that proved the difference. That Roosters team were missing Pearce, Cordnor and Taukeiaho and it's clear the Roosters have gradually improved as the season has progressed. The round seven Panthers included a number of players that we won't see on Monday night - Soward, Te Maire, Hiku and McKendry, although they have unearthed a rich talent in Nathan Cleary since then. Perhaps goal-kicking proves the difference again - Cleary vs Taukeiaho - I can see Cleary now the rain has gone.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result - Panthers 38 defeated Roosters 18

Wally Lewis - round twenty-two selections (in bold)

  • Knights vs BULLDOGS

Congratulations Rocket, No.1 shit stirrer. Does he get a beany for that coach. Good on ya Big Pete for sticking to your club, like we all do I guess. And your dead right Big Pete, Titans should be included as they have done really well this year, bloody good coach too.

Coach Potato's picture

Spotted any forward passes yet Mark?

mark ashford's picture

Big Pete the hangover from the silvertails thing when there was no cap will forever haunt your club.
I for one got over it long ago as should most RL supporters.
It's all even guys.
Some Cows supporters blame Manly for bad calls over the past couple of years and they were right.
But it wasn't Manly's fault it was poor referring.
Oops the games on better go.

mark ashford's picture

Coach I see forward passes in every RL game including your beloved Panthers. Anything else?

BigPeteBx's picture

Fortress - the ways it pans out here , at times.
It could be seen as Days of our Lives.................and we all just talk it up.

I'll hang in there Fortress with our match. Wont be a walk over, as there is too much of the old Parra/Manly fire and hate, that still goes around.

Manly have memories and if given enough loose play, could just terrorise Eels, if they want. No taking the foot off the pedal, like last week.

I told my wife, that we are heading for Beach Inspectors training in the Summer. Lunch at The Corso, then a Fortress guided tour of the beach. Hahahaha......I been there a few times - nice fresh fish and chips, but need a draught beer - not bottled.

Cheers - Big Pete

mark ashford's picture

Whats with the Broncs jerseys? Thought I was watching the Storm play he Dragons?

christine's picture

Mark I was not referring to storm being stripped of their competition points but I was reffering to things I have seen storm do during games that they get away with even when it's not a home ground advantage for them that another team wouldn't get away with , & big pete that comment that was made was not actually directed at you ,i'm not against you big pete so I hope that clears the air with you ok .

Baggy_Gee's picture

Ahhh manly, how the mighty have fallen. Shouldn't the empire continue? Problem with buying titles in the 70's is that you keep having to pump that cash in. If you couldn't grow your own talent back then, why would that change over time?

Coach Potato's picture

Only difference is the Storm are a top class team

doggie's picture

Fortress, you keep carrying on about no one wants to talk footie. I commented last week about how good your team is going. No reply. You made a comment about the Treboyovich brothers. I responded and backed you up even though im an old maggies man, now dogs. No reply. I will always talk footie. Did you play and if so where. I like to know how many old country a graders are out there. So far only bigpete is getting my attention.

Coach Potato's picture

No beanie because he's not #1

Tailspin's picture

Ah coach, there goes the boot, love it.

Coach Potato's picture

At least the lights are working at about 65% tonight Dragons.

Tailspin's picture

So are you claiming No.1 coach

doggie's picture

Hey Bigpete. Draught beer, please. Call it what it is, a cold frothy schooner. Not those gay pots they sell in qland.

Tailspin's picture

Hey doggie, I played for a fair few years for the Tieri eagles and at one stage we had Chris Close as captain coach. He new a fair few drinking games :)

Tailspin's picture

Woo back there doggie, we drink the schooners up here mate, but only when we run out of buckets :)

Tailspin's picture

Love a tooheys new on tap but me favourite now is great northern

Tailspin's picture

Broncos winning coach, shitty weather, but still not happy with their kicking game.

Tailspin's picture

By the way you southerners, real men drink Bundy rum.

Coach Potato's picture

When it's raining on the South Coast it's usually raining on the mid-North Coast.

If it's still cats and dogs at Newcastle, that could even things up a whole lot. Remember it was 16-10 to the Knights last 40. And Dogs lost their last 40 to the Dragons 10-0.

Coach Potato's picture

Both Carlton by why is VB such cat's piss, and Carlton Draught nectar of the gods??!

doggie's picture

Good stuff tailspin.Sounds like a good side to play for. I can imagine big Chris Close being agreat coach and bloke. Even though he hates NSW with a passion. By the way, Bundy is pretty popular amongst NT boys as well. I might be still a NSW supporter but after 30yrs I call myself a topender. Drinking tooheys new right now but when at the pub I like a great northern myself.

Coach Potato's picture

No try my ass

Coach Potato's picture

No try my ass

Coach Potato's picture

Actually, fair call

Baggy_Gee's picture

He made a good attempt try of the year if it came off.

Coach Potato's picture

Actually, fair call

Coach Potato's picture

Ahh yes well done Broncos. A grinding dour affair. Possibly a sad indictmemt though to think that this style of game ended up suiting the Broncos even more than the Dragons. Who would have thought.

Dragons and Souths, their only wins in 2 months. What can you say.

a's picture

I'm still standing in the comp with Dragons Eels Knights Panthers Rabbitohs Roosters Warriors and West Tigers to tip

Tailspin's picture

Hey doggie, Choppy is a great bloke, very passionate footballer, and an easy going bloke to boot. Happy to call him a mate, I still keep in contact with him on facebook. Great northern is my favourite drink now, even though its heavy it goes down light, yum yum. I'm a bundy rum fan myself, makes me very happy where as other people gets them agro as shit. Bloody broncos are playing shit. I cant understand what the hell is going on with them at the moment. They nearly lost the game. Took the foot of the pedal aand thought they would cruise home, definitely the broncos of old.

Tailspin's picture

Sorry, definitely NOT the broncos of old.

Tailspin's picture

Hey coach, I heard Melbourne bitter was the good stuff down south.

mark ashford's picture

Broncos stay alive but only just. St G a good game guys nearly got us.
Probably the best game dragons played all year. A savage rivalry between these clubs with the Broncs well on top.
If it had been dragons at home against panthers then a dragons win was assured

Tailspin's picture

XXX from Tasmania is bloody awesome, trouble is you cant get it up here.

Coach Potato's picture

Hey Fortress, footy talk covers all aspects, and if players are making money out of losing games then I don't think that is the kind of thing to be swept under the carpet.

So tell us what you know. What you've heard. Or are you zipping it shut?

mark ashford's picture

What the f--k we are talking about beer here?
What about the broncs win?
no one interested?
ok I'll go to bed

mark ashford's picture

doggie's picture

I thought it was a good win for the broncos considering the conditions. Hey tailspin, you mentioned that Great Northern was a heavy beer. In Darwin, Great Northern is a mid strength. Might be a conspiracy. Love to have a bundy with ya.

doggie's picture

Mark, footy and beer go hand in hand.

Coach Potato's picture

Tailspin, my Panthers beat his Broncos to a pulp as he taunted me about hiding under the bed, and then blow me down, that's where we found him. He finally sent a bleary eyed 4am comment that meant nothing, and he could hardly say a word for days apart from something about still being in shock. Is that who you want to crown?

Coach Potato's picture

Ok it's time for the Great Aussie Gold Count-athon.

No prize to offer here, but a great opportunity if someone else wants to be an equally generous giving person and offer something (anyone? anyone?)

Just pick how many Gold Medals Australia wins at the Olympics. Team events, swimming relays, rowing etc only count as one. The only rules are you can't pick the same number as someone else, once that number is taken, you gotta pick sometning elss, and it's first in best dressed.

Sounds like I get first pick amd my magic number of Gold is ..... 10.

Seaeagle47's picture

Well said tailspin, I'll drink to that ????????????????????????????????????????????????, oh yeah......... GO THE EAGLES.

fortresseagle's picture

Congrats broncos tough gritty win as they say in the classics a win is a win well done mark Ashord hope that puts a smile on your face.

Yes doggie played grade at school then played A grade for the local area in manly started out as lock but then played second row as well. If we beat the rorters tommoz night a great game against your mob the following week at the ANZ.

Tailspin that's cool u can hate my team but I think most if the hate against the mighty eagles is because of our success it's called the talk poppy syndrome. No club has had the success of the mighty sea eagles in the modern era u only need to check the stats to find out. Jelousy and envy . As for hate no I don't hate but I might dislike other teams , at least u have the guts to say it and that's fine the feeling is mutal ,just watch u don't drop ur nuts.

Big Pete yes mate who cares they can hate us as much as they like going for 5 in a row it's funny how baggy pants keeps talking bout our team god the all mighty his club is silver water jail bound why dies he blame the world for his clubs misery I really think he is a manly closet supporter come on baggy pants we know I love manly we won't tell anyone just have the guts and the balls to tell us it will be fine fair dinkum.

Anyways big Pete in very confident of a big win heading into our last 4 games which are tough but we are in a roll lots of nervouse people out there hoping we don't make it .i knew we could and the guts and never say due artitude is what makes our magnificent club the greatest.

Chat soon big Pete will post to tommorrow night after the murder at Piretek .

Good evening to all and as the fortress always says were keeping the dream alive go the mighty eagles go get em boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

fortresseagle's picture

Sea eagle 47 good to see u back mate we need you here to even the ledger.

Yeah the boys going great guns 5 in a row is on the cards thena very tough month but we can do it the confidence in the club is sky high well done to the boys for showing the spirit of our great club.

Seaeagle47's picture

G'day fortresseagle,
Gr8 to see the mighty ones hit a bit of form, just a bit concerned about there 2nd half efforts. If they can get the mongrel back in there defense & keep the regular 17 week in week out, we will give this a real shot.
To all our knockers ????, bring it on, i love big firm knockers ???? ????.

fortresseagle's picture

No worries mate me too the firmer the better .

Yes but the game against the knights was done and dusted don't want injuries or suspensions mate were going great guns if we can blow parra off the park bring down the 4 and.against will give this a real shot one week at a time buddy,

Speaking bout firm ones what the eagles cheerleaders they are the hottest not only is our club the best but our cheerleaders are the best as well ,

Go the boys tonight let's kill em
