Round eight selections

Canberra Raiders vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – GIO Stadium

The Raiders are warming up nicely as the season progresses, and are on track for their fourth win in succession in what is a rare game for them under the bright lights on a Friday night. Their victory over the Warriors last week was full of merit – two late withdrawals left the Raiders with just 15 players to work with. It's been nine years since a team have done that in the NRL, and not only did the Raiders win but they were strong at the tail end of that 20-8 victory. They are the real deal. The Sea Eagles were strong at the tail end of their round seven game too, but left their run too late. Martin Taupau returns up front for the visitors and Manly will need every one of their big men performing if they want to match the might of the Raiders pack. That said, the forwards battle won't be where this game is won (and that's unusual). That edge attack from Leilua and Rapana is probably the best in the league, and it's that edge where Manly have conceded most of their points this year. Those looking at try-scoring betting options take note, and for those just looking for a tip....the Raiders are specials.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Sea Eagles 20 defeated Raiders 18

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

In the last five weeks the Bunnies only victories have been at the expense of the spare tyres at the Panthers (by a solitary point) and the Knights by six. In their three losses they got towelled up by the Chooks, Storm and Bulldogs. I think the Broncos have more in common with the teams that towelled up the Bunnies. Sam Burgess gets to lace on the boots, which makes the Bunnies slightly more competitive but not competitive enough to win. I thought the Raiders were specials, but the Broncos even moreso.

Verdict – Broncos by 14

Result – Broncos 25 defeated Rabbitohs 24

Parramatta Eels vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

While the Eels vs Tigers game on Easter Monday was entertaining to watch, few would have walked away thinking either team would be competing with the better sides in the competition. The Eels looked good late, but the Tigers made them so. Penrith are fast becoming the most disappointing team this season (which isn't easy when you're in the same competition as the Warriors). I suggested many times last season that the Panthers looked very good against the poorer teams but struggled against the very best teams. This theory had me in a running battle with you-know-who...but I was right. This year they've flogged the Tigers and the Knights, but lost to the Dragons, Roosters and Sharks. It looks like nothing has changed. Now I just have to decide if the Eels are a good team or not. I don't think they are, but keep an eye on the team line-ups. If Kenny Edwards starts at fullback (ignore this...I'm an idiot), Gutherson switches to the halves and Takairangi takes on utility duties off the bench I could change my mind. As teams currently stand, I'll tip the Panthers with almost no confidence whatsoever.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result – Eels 18 defeated Panthers 12

North Queensland Cowboys vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

There's been a playmaker inside John Asiata bursting to show himself and he gets another chance to shine. So too Ponga in the fullback role, against the club he joins next season. Clearly the Cowboys are one or two forwards and one or two Thurstons short of a premiership threat at the minute, but they finished well against the Dragons last week and they should be too strong at home.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result – Cowboys 24 defeated Knights 12

Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – Southern Cross Stadium

The extended bench for the Titans creates interest with Hayne, Proctor and Hurrell all named in the 21. Of those, only Hayne is any real chance of playing. If he does, this is quite the task he faces in his return. The Sharks haven't conceded a try in their last two games, and those games were away from home. They're back at their spiritual home with an unchanged line-up, and they'll win this in a canter.

Verdict – Sharks by 22

Result – Titans 16 defeated Sharks 12

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

I spoke of the Tigers earlier but I'll say it again. They aren't good enough. Their right edge defence leaked points last week, and I'm sure Des Hasler noticed. Note that one of the weak links on that Tigers edge is out injured this week but they don't exactly have a truckload of first grade centres to call upon. I'd be tempted to throw Chris Lawrence back out there again, if his hamstrings can take the pace. There's not many levers Cleary can pull, and whatever he does come up with is likely to fall short. Note the venue – it's a Tigers home game played at the Bulldogs home ground.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Tigers 18 defeated Bulldogs 12

Sydney Roosters vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Tuesday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

If you only watch one game this round make sure it's this one, and if you're in Sydney on ANZAC Day you could do worse than stroll down to the Sydney Football Stadium for what is one of the real highlights of the NRL season. My blood flows red, white and blue so perhaps that is colouring my judgement but I'm happy to tip the Chooks here. Their forward pack will be a sterner test for the Dragons than what they faced in round seven. Note that Dylan Napa is some chance of an early return too.  If the Roosters are to be taken seriously as premiership contenders they need a big scalp, and I've a feeling they'll be primed for a breakout performance.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Roosters 13 defeated Dragons 12

Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors – Tuesday night – AAMI Park

This ANZAC Day clash is often over-shadowed by the afternoon game, but is a worthy spectacle indeed. In fact, the Storm have often shown us their very best on this day, and the Storm at their best are better than everyone. Will Chambers returns to strengthen the backline. The Warriors are yet to win away from Mt Smart this season, and they're backing up from a trip to Canberra with a trip to Melbourne. Do they actually go home in between? A game that often surprises on the upside, as the Warriors do like to remind us that NZ is a very important part of ANZAC. In any case, the Storm will get the points in the end.

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 20 defeated Warriors 14

Wally Lewis - round eight selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • RAIDERS vs Sea Eagles
  • Rabbitohs vs BRONCOS
  • Eels vs PANTHERS
  • COWBOYS vs Knights
  • SHARKS vs Titans
  • Tigers vs BULLDOGS
  • ROOSTERS vs Dragons
  • STORM vs Warriors

Hi "a"
Not exactly sure what your comp is about but I'm sure it will be good.
This week (round 8) put me down for Sharks.

a's picture

3 strike comp

Christine: Broncos
Pabual : Broncos
Mark Ashford: Sharks

mark ashford's picture

Hi all tippers!
"a" will soon advise the details of his comp.
As an "a" supporter I have decided to offer a prize of $75 to the winner.
Enough for a Polo or a few Beanies of your choice.
I have no idea of the details but they will soon be divulged.
For #8 I have picked the Sharks.
So get your selections in as the details enfold.
THINKER I think "a" needs some help with a page if you can do that.
TLH it will probably fall to you. A bottle of Scotch for your trouble is not out of the question.

The Thinker's picture

Thanks Mark for the offer of the prize. That is very generous of you.

No need for the scotch, I can build a page for 'a'.

I couldn't quite get my head around how it works, so 'a' might have to add some detail.

Here is the link to the 'a' competition.

a's picture

Thanks Thinker I will when you create a page

Look I don't want to kick a man when he's down but I sense a slightly happier, safer to have a dig, more people posting without being castigated and a generally easier site.
Coach come back when you are ready, all it takes is a little bit of niceness, if you can manage that.

a's picture

Yeah I agree with you Mark it's a easier site now

Johnny Awesome's picture

Ok Mr A what is comp all about? Some folk have chosen teams to do what? Cheers from Mr Awesome

Coach Potato's picture

Some totally respectful questions from the top of the compost heap in between lots of orange peel and finely shredded Sunday sports sections.

Respectfully, wasn't the new comp only meant to be begin once the current one had finished? Makes no difference to compost - I guess, but would seem to disrespect the current comp somewhat-ish.

Respectfully, if the current comp has shown to go for 10, 11, 12 weeks plus with no lives, how long will it go for if you now get three lives? Is the season long enough? Is It kinda sorta teeny weeny just a little bit a copy cat of Last One On The Couch and could maybe offer something a bit newer?

Respectfully, the Wicked Witch has flown Westward, and the muchkins from Oz are all out dancing hip hip hooray - and yet everything the Wicked Witch was credited as bringing to the table: the stats, the games, is somehow needing to be carried on by the other Ozwegians like a Commonwealth Games torch through the streets of Tuvalu. Not gonna say the H word, but maybe - What the ...? Is this like the movie where they steal the damn shoes?

So these are my zombie-esque questions from the compost heap.
If it's easier for you to snub your nose like dynamic lifter on a summer's day than offer your respectful answers, so be it.

Just don't forget those flowers in the meadows will always need some occasional fertiliser to thrive.

a's picture

So you just had a go at me Coach how immature I hope you know want your doing is pointless well I hope people ignore cause you will think I pissed guess what I'm not

Coach Potato's picture

I think I could say the sky is blue, and there would be someone who found that distastefully offensive.

a's picture

Well I would never disrespect any
comps now can we be on our best behaviour Coach

Baggy_Gee's picture

Pabdul - K-Rudd was voted off the island years ago.

Coach Potato's picture

I'm just asking for some info on the whole thing and don't think that's being immature.

If I didn't ask to your liking, tell me exactly what words I should use.
I will then copy and paste the question back to you.

christine's picture

"a" Just ignore it , by responding your giving him what he wants .

a's picture

Yeah I agree I will try I already told him that I will be ignoring him in the future so yeah I will be

Hi Coach,
I would have thought that The Thinker’s request for more information on “a’s” suggested comp and “a’s” answer, would indicate that more info is coming so it seems a bit premature for you to ask, and the fashion in which you do so seems to indicate your disdain for other contributors to this sight. The fact that you need to ask what words you should use and your use of ‘Respectfully’ in your previous comment, appears more as a slight to other users and a complete lack of respect for them.
I began following this sight 5 years ago when I found Wally Lewis contributed with his tips and I had entered a work footy comp with a sport I knew absolutely nothing about. I have found it to be extremely helpful, and in the majority entertaining in some of the comments. There have been times I have also been disgusted with the personal attack on some contributors and unfortunately Coach Potato, most of those have originated from yourself.
As I have also appreciated some of the stats you have provided, and watched comps progress, I sincerely hope that should you elect to continue on sight Coach, that the apparent distain for others opinion disappears.
Cheers,
Mary S

Hello Mr Coach Potato,
Still can't figure how you do it. You could start an argument in an empty house and still lose it. This site is all inclusive and if Mr Thinker sanctions an extra comp' like Mr 'a' wants to do, its not detracting from yours. In fact, more fun for more who want to participate. Mr 'a' will let us all know when he has it all worked out. Check out how many tipping comp's there are on the internet all based on similar lines, teams etc so I wouldn't be too concerned about copyright Mr Coach Potato. Most droughts usually end with a flood and boy did you come back with a bang. Mate, crusty as you are, sometimes you need to just bring the bacon without the sizzle. Cheers from Mr Awesome

christine's picture

Mary s Good for you & well said i'm on your side & i'll back you up when he attacks you anytime , were have you been hiding all these years? you should have spoken up sooner but i'm glad you have now ...

I'm you your side to Mary S

I'm on your side Mary S too

pabdul's picture

first of all well said mary
to me its been like a cartoon i used to watch called the wacky races. with the coach being dick darstardly. it didn't matter how much he upset people you know he was never going to win.
i can hear mutley laughing in the background.

Kenny Edwards at fullback? eh?

Hi Thinker,

My tips for round 8:

Raiders by 12
Broncos by 16
Eels by 4
Cowboys by 8
Sharks by 20
Bulldogs by 16
Dragons by 12
Storm by 10

Thank you.

The Thinker's picture

Well spotted Anonymous......argh.

I'm getting my footballers mixed up. Stoopid brain.

I meant Bevan French....and he's not back yet. Panthers...good things.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Look Kenny Edwards did far better at 5/8 last year than anyone gave him credit for. He'd kill it on the kick return, might just struggle with proper positioning. Don't underestimate the boys they are back in town.

Rocket Ryan's picture

The A game comp, a can you agree to the thinkers suggestion re the 10 points etc, in all fairness to Mary s who has been on the sight for years we need some clarity, blokes have picked teams without any idea how it will work this could be messier than a west tigers game.
it needs to be more than last one on the couch with three chances or as thinker has suggested it will be hard to administer.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Happy to join the comp Mr 'a' just clarify final rules with Mr Thinker. Don't really care how you run it. I go with the flow as I do with my boss ( she who must be obeyed) Iand follow instruction well. Cheers from Mr Awesome

christine's picture

"a" So "a" in your A game ( don't forget to bring your a game ) if I tip broncos this week I can't use broncos as a tip again unless they loose this week because I tipped them is that right ? so similar to on the couch comp you have to pick a different team each week but unless you loose one week you can't use that same team again , that's how it works ?

mark ashford's picture

Hi all
Regarding "a"s comp.
I've been in touch and he is still fine tuning the details which will be posted shortly.
Anyone who has already chosen a team will have the option to change if they want to when it's up and running.
Give it a little time and I'm sure we'll have some fun.

My tips for round 8

Mary S (great post!)
Johnny A

and all others soon all will be revealed.

Coach Potato's picture

Congratulations everyone!
You all passed.

Go to your nearest tool shed, grab pliers, and gently pull hooks out of mouth.

It's all been a good old stir.
The whole damn thing.
Gotcha's all.

There was a point to it though. I really do think a bit of fire is great for the game. Just need to limit the brimstone - until Origin season.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Ok Mr Coach Potato, not a bad way to tidy up loose ends. However, I still think you may have a small hole in the fence that still needs fixing mate. Starting with Christine and Mr 'a' and a little 'sorry' would help. Cheers from Mr Awesome

Oh by the way Mr Coach Potato I'm still waiting for that rendition of Kumbaya from you. I'm already humming a few bars and oiling my throat ready to hit that chorus high notes with you. We could be louder than my Dads Sunday tie

Hello Mr Thinker, I have a little annoyance which maybe you could solve with the programming of your site. I basically only use my phone hence the typos ( stupid spell check gets me every time), so when I leave the page, I always have to relog in. Ok, I'll never forget my password now, lots of practice, but is it possible to add a remember password box for those who want? Just putting it out there Mr Thinker? What do you think? think is what you do best. Cheers from Mr Awesome
