Canberra Raiders vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – GIO Stadium
The Raiders are warming up nicely as the season progresses, and are on track for their fourth win in succession in what is a rare game for them under the bright lights on a Friday night. Their victory over the Warriors last week was full of merit – two late withdrawals left the Raiders with just 15 players to work with. It's been nine years since a team have done that in the NRL, and not only did the Raiders win but they were strong at the tail end of that 20-8 victory. They are the real deal. The Sea Eagles were strong at the tail end of their round seven game too, but left their run too late. Martin Taupau returns up front for the visitors and Manly will need every one of their big men performing if they want to match the might of the Raiders pack. That said, the forwards battle won't be where this game is won (and that's unusual). That edge attack from Leilua and Rapana is probably the best in the league, and it's that edge where Manly have conceded most of their points this year. Those looking at try-scoring betting options take note, and for those just looking for a tip....the Raiders are specials.
Verdict – Raiders by 8
Result – Sea Eagles 20 defeated Raiders 18
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – ANZ Stadium
In the last five weeks the Bunnies only victories have been at the expense of the spare tyres at the Panthers (by a solitary point) and the Knights by six. In their three losses they got towelled up by the Chooks, Storm and Bulldogs. I think the Broncos have more in common with the teams that towelled up the Bunnies. Sam Burgess gets to lace on the boots, which makes the Bunnies slightly more competitive but not competitive enough to win. I thought the Raiders were specials, but the Broncos even moreso.
Verdict – Broncos by 14
Result – Broncos 25 defeated Rabbitohs 24
Parramatta Eels vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
While the Eels vs Tigers game on Easter Monday was entertaining to watch, few would have walked away thinking either team would be competing with the better sides in the competition. The Eels looked good late, but the Tigers made them so. Penrith are fast becoming the most disappointing team this season (which isn't easy when you're in the same competition as the Warriors). I suggested many times last season that the Panthers looked very good against the poorer teams but struggled against the very best teams. This theory had me in a running battle with you-know-who...but I was right. This year they've flogged the Tigers and the Knights, but lost to the Dragons, Roosters and Sharks. It looks like nothing has changed. Now I just have to decide if the Eels are a good team or not. I don't think they are, but keep an eye on the team line-ups. If Kenny Edwards starts at fullback (ignore this...I'm an idiot), Gutherson switches to the halves and Takairangi takes on utility duties off the bench I could change my mind. As teams currently stand, I'll tip the Panthers with almost no confidence whatsoever.
Verdict – Panthers by 2
Result – Eels 18 defeated Panthers 12
North Queensland Cowboys vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
There's been a playmaker inside John Asiata bursting to show himself and he gets another chance to shine. So too Ponga in the fullback role, against the club he joins next season. Clearly the Cowboys are one or two forwards and one or two Thurstons short of a premiership threat at the minute, but they finished well against the Dragons last week and they should be too strong at home.
Verdict – Cowboys by 10
Result – Cowboys 24 defeated Knights 12
Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – Southern Cross Stadium
The extended bench for the Titans creates interest with Hayne, Proctor and Hurrell all named in the 21. Of those, only Hayne is any real chance of playing. If he does, this is quite the task he faces in his return. The Sharks haven't conceded a try in their last two games, and those games were away from home. They're back at their spiritual home with an unchanged line-up, and they'll win this in a canter.
Verdict – Sharks by 22
Result – Titans 16 defeated Sharks 12
Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
I spoke of the Tigers earlier but I'll say it again. They aren't good enough. Their right edge defence leaked points last week, and I'm sure Des Hasler noticed. Note that one of the weak links on that Tigers edge is out injured this week but they don't exactly have a truckload of first grade centres to call upon. I'd be tempted to throw Chris Lawrence back out there again, if his hamstrings can take the pace. There's not many levers Cleary can pull, and whatever he does come up with is likely to fall short. Note the venue – it's a Tigers home game played at the Bulldogs home ground.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 8
Result – Tigers 18 defeated Bulldogs 12
Sydney Roosters vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Tuesday afternoon – Allianz Stadium
If you only watch one game this round make sure it's this one, and if you're in Sydney on ANZAC Day you could do worse than stroll down to the Sydney Football Stadium for what is one of the real highlights of the NRL season. My blood flows red, white and blue so perhaps that is colouring my judgement but I'm happy to tip the Chooks here. Their forward pack will be a sterner test for the Dragons than what they faced in round seven. Note that Dylan Napa is some chance of an early return too. If the Roosters are to be taken seriously as premiership contenders they need a big scalp, and I've a feeling they'll be primed for a breakout performance.
Verdict – Roosters by 4
Result – Roosters 13 defeated Dragons 12
Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors – Tuesday night – AAMI Park
This ANZAC Day clash is often over-shadowed by the afternoon game, but is a worthy spectacle indeed. In fact, the Storm have often shown us their very best on this day, and the Storm at their best are better than everyone. Will Chambers returns to strengthen the backline. The Warriors are yet to win away from Mt Smart this season, and they're backing up from a trip to Canberra with a trip to Melbourne. Do they actually go home in between? A game that often surprises on the upside, as the Warriors do like to remind us that NZ is a very important part of ANZAC. In any case, the Storm will get the points in the end.
Verdict – Storm by 8
Result – Storm 20 defeated Warriors 14

Baggy G - the garden roses aren't an issue, just think of it, that I'm the rose between the thorns. 42 aren't a problem and I wont be in line for 60 in the next life, as I don't come from that background.
Fussy, furry or thorny.....they have a lovely perfume, if you pick the right ones.

Hi BigPeteBX & Pudbul,
Brings back the memories with your posts on English soccer. My father came to Australia from England (Kent) when he was 14. Over 50 years ago now, we both enjoyed watching the soccer on TV. and I was a Manchester United fan, when George Best was at his best and my father went for Arsenals.
Mind you, I think my father went for whatever the opposing team was then, so that we enjoyed the friendly rivalry and barracking our team on.
Great memories - thanks.

Morning Tailspin.
They can do all the whingeing they like, when they want a result.
I HATE Golden Point!!!!!!
Always did and as I said to somehow on this site when I first joined, it is the soccer/football version of shoot-out and can be very disheartening when you lose.
If its a draw, let them share the points, as it could be the difference between making the eight or missing the boat to the finals.
Have a nice Sunday

Good morning Miss Mary.
Good to see and hear from you.
You said you were a Man Utd supporter and I hope you still are.
I am also and it goes back to my youth and when I started playing which led to 40 plus years involved with sports coaching and admin in my area of C W NSW.
I have a framed photo of George Best (he was my idol), Eddie Charlton and Denis Law together. I've also purchased last year, the George Best Immortal - The Approved Biography. All 520 pages of it. Cost was $23.00 from Dymocks Bookstores, if it interests you. I haven't read it yet, but have it for a rainy day and as a collectors item.
Did I notice that you are a Nth Qld resident when you first came on site? I remember Robbie Fowler (ex Liverpool) having a stint at Nth Qld Fury in A-League, when they were participating.
You keep well and nice seeing you declare your colors and of some past.
Cheers - Big Pete

Sorry Mary - it was Bobby Charlton, got me snookered there.
Also, my heritage forefathers to this area came from Pinchbeck/Spalding
in Lincolnshire back in 1853 when the gold rush was blooming here in Australia.
Long story, but gold got money and then they bought farms.
Have a nice Sunday

George best never saw him play but saw him train. former leeds manager don revie was dying of motor neurons and were having a match in his honor. an all stars team were playing leeds united.
we got kicked off elland road so they could train. Keegan dalgleish rush all there but one player stood out george best.
we went to the match but he didn't play. they interviewed him in the break and was asked was it because of the alcohol and womanizing that he didn't play. and he said no i tried that once and it was the worse 20 minutes of my life.

Baggy, Broncos have already featured in the Loungeroom so featuring the other teams would be fair I would have thought.
Must be someone out there that likes their Sunday footy.

A, you want the Lounge open permanently?
So it's there to plonk yourself on anytime there's a game on?
I guess that's a thought.

Hi All
Enjoyed the talk about where we come from and who we support.
I too am a ten pound Pom. Born in Portsmouth and coming here at age 18 months with Mum & Dad, three sisters and a brother all older than me.
Now an extremely proud Aussie citizen.
Big Pete your heritage is interesting, any bushrangers in there mate.
Just watching the intro into the Dogs/Tigers game and can't help thinking Gould is looking more like a Galapagos Tortoise every day.
His eyes are just slits and his head is getting bigger.

Well done to your boys Tigerholic. They wanted it more than the dogs.
A very physical game with Tedesco shining, you will miss him.
Don't know about Woods, if I was a Tiger supporter....glad to see him gone.

I'll just sit over here with the popular front. Nothing better than a good belly laughs at some real comedy, saw about 100 crested pigeons on a power wire one-day with one about 15m away by himself. Only thing I could say was "splitter".

That's 2 good scalps in the last 3 weeks, the cowboys and the dogs. Shame the biggest of the 3 eluded you. But there is enough there to look forward to life next season. Maybe loosing a few will encourage the young colts to step up and make their mark.

Hello there Mark.
The Pompey ay.
Played in EPL a few seasons ago, or was it FA Cup Final - might be The Cup.
So Mark, do you have a favourite team in UK or is it straight out A-League and Brisbane Roar who defeated West Sydney Wanderers on Friday night in an eventual shoot-out.
No link to b/rangers that I know. But my g/grandfather found a bushranger's loot buried in the hills where their farm was, during gold rush period. No wonder, I've been told, he never worked after that.
I did find that two girls of the English side of the family, that I am trying to trace back to Devon, married into English History. Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh, but I haven't had it confirmed.....so no bragging rights, although one lost his head (beheaded at the block).
Yes Mark, the more I look at Gus G, the more I think he is an out of condition ageing pug (boxer).
Submitted by BigPeteBx on
I guess Pabdul, we can comprehend with your dad and the late dinner.
They feed them up early in aged care.
Nothing like the fresh air.
R u enjoying the last of the school holidays and getting away for a few days?
Did you call into Crow's at G/Gong?
Cheers mate and take it steady on the roads.

Hi 'a' - I certainly agree with you on the round of upsets!! Congrats Tigerholic, Razzledazzled and Coach on your pick of the Tigers - was an exciting finish. Scores are certainly low this round with 3/6 being the highest so far. I have scored 2/6 in the work comp I take part in- most disappointing with double points this round!
Cheers to all

Tigers play Sharks next week
Submitted by christine on
"a" more importantly tigers play sharks next week who just lost to titans , sharks will want the win to make up for their loss to titans but tigers will want to win three in a row , whats your thoughts on all of this tigerholic who wants it more sharks or tigers ???
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Logic dictates if you can't afford four high price tag players, you would settle for keeping three happy and letting the other go.
Making two happy, and letting the other two go would show as a slightly more desperate situation with finances.
Only keeping one, and letting three go reaks of a club in all sorts of strife. Sure they'll have money to spend now but on who? They need to replace half a spine and a front rower. Noones coming to mind at the moment.

Big Pete ,johnny awesome just watched the fa cup semibfinal .
In a dramatic match arsenal came from 1 nil down to win 2_1 in the second period of extra time which means they now play chelsea in the fa cup final late may at Wembley.
Wow what a win hopefully they can win silverware and if it is arsene Wenger's last year give him a much deserved send off what a final it will be.
This will be arsenals 20th fa cup final having won the cup 12 times.
Sanchez and ozil were brilliant the goal to win the match from Sanchez was stunning.
So the mighty eagles in the top 8 and proving the critics and haters wrong.
Have a good one boys from fortress home of the mighty sea eagles!!!!!!!!!

Hope you had a good weekend, I played two games of golf and celebrated my 28th wedding anniversary. The Tigers were great yesterday and yes the 3 that are leaving played a big part but there are other players out on the paddock that showed that they want to be there to give me some hope for next year.
The Tigers play the sharks this week and they will be pushing you know what up hill to win, the Sharks coming off a loss and the Tigers looking for two in a row as they lost the week before last to the Eels.
Have a good week
