Round eight selections

Canberra Raiders vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – GIO Stadium

The Raiders are warming up nicely as the season progresses, and are on track for their fourth win in succession in what is a rare game for them under the bright lights on a Friday night. Their victory over the Warriors last week was full of merit – two late withdrawals left the Raiders with just 15 players to work with. It's been nine years since a team have done that in the NRL, and not only did the Raiders win but they were strong at the tail end of that 20-8 victory. They are the real deal. The Sea Eagles were strong at the tail end of their round seven game too, but left their run too late. Martin Taupau returns up front for the visitors and Manly will need every one of their big men performing if they want to match the might of the Raiders pack. That said, the forwards battle won't be where this game is won (and that's unusual). That edge attack from Leilua and Rapana is probably the best in the league, and it's that edge where Manly have conceded most of their points this year. Those looking at try-scoring betting options take note, and for those just looking for a tip....the Raiders are specials.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Sea Eagles 20 defeated Raiders 18

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

In the last five weeks the Bunnies only victories have been at the expense of the spare tyres at the Panthers (by a solitary point) and the Knights by six. In their three losses they got towelled up by the Chooks, Storm and Bulldogs. I think the Broncos have more in common with the teams that towelled up the Bunnies. Sam Burgess gets to lace on the boots, which makes the Bunnies slightly more competitive but not competitive enough to win. I thought the Raiders were specials, but the Broncos even moreso.

Verdict – Broncos by 14

Result – Broncos 25 defeated Rabbitohs 24

Parramatta Eels vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

While the Eels vs Tigers game on Easter Monday was entertaining to watch, few would have walked away thinking either team would be competing with the better sides in the competition. The Eels looked good late, but the Tigers made them so. Penrith are fast becoming the most disappointing team this season (which isn't easy when you're in the same competition as the Warriors). I suggested many times last season that the Panthers looked very good against the poorer teams but struggled against the very best teams. This theory had me in a running battle with you-know-who...but I was right. This year they've flogged the Tigers and the Knights, but lost to the Dragons, Roosters and Sharks. It looks like nothing has changed. Now I just have to decide if the Eels are a good team or not. I don't think they are, but keep an eye on the team line-ups. If Kenny Edwards starts at fullback (ignore this...I'm an idiot), Gutherson switches to the halves and Takairangi takes on utility duties off the bench I could change my mind. As teams currently stand, I'll tip the Panthers with almost no confidence whatsoever.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result – Eels 18 defeated Panthers 12

North Queensland Cowboys vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

There's been a playmaker inside John Asiata bursting to show himself and he gets another chance to shine. So too Ponga in the fullback role, against the club he joins next season. Clearly the Cowboys are one or two forwards and one or two Thurstons short of a premiership threat at the minute, but they finished well against the Dragons last week and they should be too strong at home.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result – Cowboys 24 defeated Knights 12

Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – Southern Cross Stadium

The extended bench for the Titans creates interest with Hayne, Proctor and Hurrell all named in the 21. Of those, only Hayne is any real chance of playing. If he does, this is quite the task he faces in his return. The Sharks haven't conceded a try in their last two games, and those games were away from home. They're back at their spiritual home with an unchanged line-up, and they'll win this in a canter.

Verdict – Sharks by 22

Result – Titans 16 defeated Sharks 12

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

I spoke of the Tigers earlier but I'll say it again. They aren't good enough. Their right edge defence leaked points last week, and I'm sure Des Hasler noticed. Note that one of the weak links on that Tigers edge is out injured this week but they don't exactly have a truckload of first grade centres to call upon. I'd be tempted to throw Chris Lawrence back out there again, if his hamstrings can take the pace. There's not many levers Cleary can pull, and whatever he does come up with is likely to fall short. Note the venue – it's a Tigers home game played at the Bulldogs home ground.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Tigers 18 defeated Bulldogs 12

Sydney Roosters vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Tuesday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

If you only watch one game this round make sure it's this one, and if you're in Sydney on ANZAC Day you could do worse than stroll down to the Sydney Football Stadium for what is one of the real highlights of the NRL season. My blood flows red, white and blue so perhaps that is colouring my judgement but I'm happy to tip the Chooks here. Their forward pack will be a sterner test for the Dragons than what they faced in round seven. Note that Dylan Napa is some chance of an early return too.  If the Roosters are to be taken seriously as premiership contenders they need a big scalp, and I've a feeling they'll be primed for a breakout performance.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Roosters 13 defeated Dragons 12

Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors – Tuesday night – AAMI Park

This ANZAC Day clash is often over-shadowed by the afternoon game, but is a worthy spectacle indeed. In fact, the Storm have often shown us their very best on this day, and the Storm at their best are better than everyone. Will Chambers returns to strengthen the backline. The Warriors are yet to win away from Mt Smart this season, and they're backing up from a trip to Canberra with a trip to Melbourne. Do they actually go home in between? A game that often surprises on the upside, as the Warriors do like to remind us that NZ is a very important part of ANZAC. In any case, the Storm will get the points in the end.

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 20 defeated Warriors 14

Wally Lewis - round eight selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • RAIDERS vs Sea Eagles
  • Rabbitohs vs BRONCOS
  • Eels vs PANTHERS
  • COWBOYS vs Knights
  • SHARKS vs Titans
  • Tigers vs BULLDOGS
  • ROOSTERS vs Dragons
  • STORM vs Warriors

Evenin Johnny A - Raiders tonight for you, but not my selection Kandos Bro. I'll scratch me feathers to win by 2 pts.
Great site here mate when you have the time to acknowledge the posts that interest you, or come to your desired attention.
What a coincidence about Mollymook (not two capital M's that I am aware of mate), but I will be there at Mollymook next weekend for an 80th Birthday at the Mollymook SLSC. Pity that wasn't planned right, we could have also caught up.
Been to Ulladulla twice before and stayed at Burrill Lake C/van Park in the cabins. Nice spot and bus over to Milton/Ulladulla RSL the best in Sthn Hemisphere and most modern. Big meals though.

Please let me know next week what the weather was like.
Much appreciate that.

No is fine.
I always have a solution.

It would just become a Super Last One On The Couch.
Need to pick two, maybe three teams in a week.

Super LOOT-C.

Coach Potato's picture

fortress just a curiosity question.

When you to tell Johnny A he talks too much off subject, are you also asking Big Sea Eagle Pete to reign himself in too?

Just a question is all.

Coach Potato's picture

.. and chat about some car rally something .. I guess that's not too NRL either is it?

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin Fortress - doing some catch-ups mate.
Will try get to Thinker over the weekend.
Johnny Awesome isn't from The Old Dart, he originally comes from my country here West of Sandstone Curtain. He has a soft spot for The Cold Capital and Viking Clap/Crap (politicians), even though he is Dragons supporter through and through.
He played a big of Group 10 R/League with Mudgee Dragons.
They had some good players over the years. I think George Afamasaga had a stint over that way and Manly used to play Mudgee in pre-season warm-up trials for a few years. I saw them play on one occasion.
I knew The Cox family from there, well and many of a railway employee. Didn't get to know the wineries too well, but Pieter van Gent makes a lovely nice smooth white port. You can buy it in bottle shops for around $15.00 and it has a nice gold with dark green label on it.

Cheers - must go

Just having a bit of fun mark if baggy or tigerholic are really offended i would be surprised they love defending their clubs as baggy said it is my turn to crow but the wheel will turn.

mark ashford's picture

Coach behave yourself.
How about some interesting things about why your Panthers will beat the Eels this week?
I think they will but it would be better if it came from you.

mark ashford's picture

Rocket this site is all about fun.
The Broncs are going well...isn't that fun.
The Panthers are going....well... they are going to the bottom.
Isn't that fun considering what we have had to endure from the Potato man for so long.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Mark are you going to the panthers game next week.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Fortress yhe eagles have lifted 12 all

Fortress's picture

Manly warringah manly warringah you'll come a waltzing Matilda with me. Manly the magnificent the mighty eagles a mighty win against a team many predict can win the comp

The best game of the year by far dramatic magnificent defence by both teams the mighty eagles 100 completion rate first half then we win a classic game.

Come on you mighty eagles haters what u say now come on have a go haaaaahaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaa

Big Pete mate that's why our team is so mighty an incredible game well done to both teams on a great game, but we showed all the critics we are the real deal this year I'm so happy mate over the moon let's celebrate a famous victory.

Manly the magnificent go you mighty sea eagkesssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Fortress's picture

Mark and rocket let coach sibwhat he wants both our clubs above his club he can stew for all ii care him and his chum baggy pants there both crying now .

Good luck to your team tonight they should win easily I reckon gee coach and baggy pants are going to be close to brink haaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Baggy_Gee's picture

Wow, Milford must have shares in farmers union with that Display.

Baggy_Gee's picture

What are dribbling about????? Why are we close to the brink? I'll take it from Mark and Ryan because they make sense, but your mind is not anywhere near coherent.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Great gutsy win by the eagles so unpredictable in some ways enjoy it fortress baggy and pototo can't both be winners this week or next i reckon

Coach Potato's picture

Rocket yhe rabbitohs have lifted 18 all

Baggy_Gee's picture

Gah, Milford knocked that on cold. Good to know the NRL has it in its rules that the Broncos aren't allowed to lose on Friday nights. Pure bull crap. Are the NRL going to come out and condemn the on field refs call?

Coach Potato's picture

Not to mention he was tackled in goal.
Ball carrying arm touches the ground.
Player has a defender with a hand on him.

Bunker don't seem to know that rule.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I was talking about that field goal as well. Refs have to be on the take after that call.

Coach Potato's picture

.... or the one about passing the ball after being tackled
... or the one about passing the ball off the ground.

It's just mind-boggling.

Baggy_Gee's picture

How the hell did Darius Boyd get man of the match? Everyone is on the frigging take.

Rocket Ryan's picture

How about those broncos boys
Yeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaa!

Baggy_Gee's picture

The silence is deafening.

Coach Potato's picture

The ref clearly said he based the decision if try based on whether Milford grounded it.

The Bunker should have had no jurisdiction to look at anything else. They weren't asked to.

But the Bunker clearly when awarding the try, referred to the ref's onfield call of try. Were you not listening Bunker? That wasn't what the ref had called.

It's a perfect example of why the Bunker has to go.

Ref's will still get it wrong because they need to decide one way or the other, but it's so much better than watching it for 3 minutes and seeing the wrong decision being made frame by frame.

Baggy_Gee's picture

But how do you get extra cash out of a sponsor if you rub out the bunkers mandatory 4 reviews a match.

a's picture

Do you think Broncos got helped by the ref tonight

Baggy_Gee's picture

I also enjoyed listening to Stirlo blow up about Milford kicking the penalty, then being a free substitute under the HIA. He has a point, that is the abuse of the system that we all knew was going to occur. MRL was going to take a stand against that sort of behavior by teams.

Fortress's picture

Hey coach and baggy pants what's happened the cats bitten ur tounges.the both of you arnt footy supporters sore losers.

U give no credit to a magnificent victory and a magnificent game.by far the game of the year.

So sad the both of you have no idea about passion about what its really like to follow a club whar its really like to be part what makes it so great to be a mighty eagles supporter .

So coach and baggy u both meet this weekend and i hope your teams bash the tripe out of each other.

Mark and rocket well done on your teams win it was closer than expected but a win is a win.

Cheers from the fortress of the mighty sea eagles!!!!!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

Coach Potato's picture

C'mon too much footy talk from you this weekend, fortress.

Love it when you talk off subject about Paula Abdul songs, fish and chips on the Corso, bingo at the RSL.

You know, interesting stuff.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I didn't know Milford changed teams?

Fortress's picture

Look.what you talk about coach all dribble honestly ur as boring as a dead nail fair dinkum you have the hide to bag me out when u and ur chum baggy pants have footy brains of sawdust.

Get used to it coach if u and baggy pants wanna bag my team or me than sure as hell ur going to copbit back no one owns this site coach not me not you not anyone else.

So stop playing the head honcho and grow a brain u wanted to leave us cause u didn't get your own way,u discredited "a" on his very inovitive comp and then u have the hide to put big Pete down when he was trying to be nice to you.

Have some respect coach or maybe someone should teach you some!!!!!!!!!

Rocket Ryan's picture

Milford changed what

Baggy_Gee's picture

According to fortress, Milford is now playing down at la-la land. Sorry for your loss Ryan.

Coach potato, Cartwright returns just before the broncos kick your arse at Suncorp, this is better than a star wars movie, can the hero save the poor panthers I would say not, you have to careful of dynamite dreams you know how easily they BLOW UP this was supposed to be your big year something is not quite right in panther land are their minds on which ones will be tigers next year or as Mark Ashford alluded to maybe old hook is a little crook who knows maybe the Eels will be too good for you today I have a sneaky feeling they will ruin the celebrations I would love to see them win here's hoping.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Not sure if a ball playingbedge runner is what we want to be facing. Will definitely change the timbre of the game, but is it going to encourage the side to side play of last week's panthers. I also am not sure of Hiku being on the bench in place of a direct running forward. Going to be a ball tearer this afternoon, shame it won't be on free to air. I'll only get the radio so hard to judge how the refs are going.

Baggy_Gee's picture

So would I Ryan. Love to see the win, and hoping that the need ringer a win is off their shoulders allowing the BOYS to play their part and not get caught up in forcing ever single play. We can do it, just have to nail the basics and all be on the same page.

pabdul's picture

at 7:48 this morning coach sent his best post ever and ironically didnt say a word.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Baggy sign up to Telstra free NRL pass watch the games on your phone

Baggy_Gee's picture

Tried that last year and was greatly disappointed in the quality and the buffering. I was trying to connect via my Wi-Fi and not mobile data and it was still substandard. But I mainly want to know that the BOYS aren't getting away with the crap I hate other teams getting away with. Win clean and fair is my motto.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Don't worry Padbul only 5or 6 weeks til SOO time we find he is always at a loss for words this time of year.

BigPeteBx's picture

Morning Fortress - yes, sounded like an incredible game. I was watching NRL Live Score and sure was see-sawing. I thought our lads might have died in those last two minutes, but they lifted and saw the match into extra time. That's when pot shotting field goals come into the equation.
Phew....glad that's over, as Raiders are good at home and sure showed it tonight.
Have a good weekend mate. I will do as Coach has hinted and try and restrict my "social/friendly" chats to myself.

So much for making friends on site, as a lot of NRL banter leads to smart-arse comments or argument, when directed in an unfriendly manner.

a's picture

Yes it was a very incredible game

pabdul's picture

i actually dont mind the coach but his mouth was sewn for a few weeks and hes getting cocky and is gradually opening the stitches till he has a hole big enough to put his foot in.

BigPeteBx's picture

Good morning Christine.
Always a hard game at The Cold Capital. Thanks for kind comments. Was a close see-sawing game in last qtr - then extra time.
Glad its over - Glad all over (yes, some might be humming that also)!!!!!

I took Sea Eagles in all tipping I do and the 2 pt margin as well.
It wasn't going to be a walkover, in any way.
Keep well and keep ahead of things.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes and thanks Mark about Thinker site being fun.
I would not have got to know you better, if it wasn't socially.
I asked the question and on here. Just like I did with Thinker, Fortress, "a", Pabdul, Johnny Awesome, Doggie and Gary from Chester UK.
I got to know a small amount about them, by being, of all things - Friendly.

Christine, she gets some therapy from here and speaking/posting with people. Evolves around footy, but might extend from that. She's a nice lady and enjoys it here when not being targeted.

Some people don't seem to have a life and can be restrained to a couch and have nothing but a tv set or a keyboard for their eyes to be glued to. They enjoy being picky or abusive and thrive with a hint for an argument.

I tried my way with Coach and he is a very private person/vegie or whatever, from wherever. Doesn't let on too much (except for stats), but is the first to criticise, if something is getting out of hand, or isn't to his liking. Other that that, I don't mind him and his love for rugby league, Aussies at C/wealth or Olympic Games and I accept that soccer/football and Manly aren't his desires.

Life goes on and each to his own!!!!!

Cheers, keep well and enjoy the fishing, crabbing and the occasional conmsumation of desired liquids.
Big Pete
