Round eight selections

Canberra Raiders vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – GIO Stadium

The Raiders are warming up nicely as the season progresses, and are on track for their fourth win in succession in what is a rare game for them under the bright lights on a Friday night. Their victory over the Warriors last week was full of merit – two late withdrawals left the Raiders with just 15 players to work with. It's been nine years since a team have done that in the NRL, and not only did the Raiders win but they were strong at the tail end of that 20-8 victory. They are the real deal. The Sea Eagles were strong at the tail end of their round seven game too, but left their run too late. Martin Taupau returns up front for the visitors and Manly will need every one of their big men performing if they want to match the might of the Raiders pack. That said, the forwards battle won't be where this game is won (and that's unusual). That edge attack from Leilua and Rapana is probably the best in the league, and it's that edge where Manly have conceded most of their points this year. Those looking at try-scoring betting options take note, and for those just looking for a tip....the Raiders are specials.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Sea Eagles 20 defeated Raiders 18

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

In the last five weeks the Bunnies only victories have been at the expense of the spare tyres at the Panthers (by a solitary point) and the Knights by six. In their three losses they got towelled up by the Chooks, Storm and Bulldogs. I think the Broncos have more in common with the teams that towelled up the Bunnies. Sam Burgess gets to lace on the boots, which makes the Bunnies slightly more competitive but not competitive enough to win. I thought the Raiders were specials, but the Broncos even moreso.

Verdict – Broncos by 14

Result – Broncos 25 defeated Rabbitohs 24

Parramatta Eels vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

While the Eels vs Tigers game on Easter Monday was entertaining to watch, few would have walked away thinking either team would be competing with the better sides in the competition. The Eels looked good late, but the Tigers made them so. Penrith are fast becoming the most disappointing team this season (which isn't easy when you're in the same competition as the Warriors). I suggested many times last season that the Panthers looked very good against the poorer teams but struggled against the very best teams. This theory had me in a running battle with you-know-who...but I was right. This year they've flogged the Tigers and the Knights, but lost to the Dragons, Roosters and Sharks. It looks like nothing has changed. Now I just have to decide if the Eels are a good team or not. I don't think they are, but keep an eye on the team line-ups. If Kenny Edwards starts at fullback (ignore this...I'm an idiot), Gutherson switches to the halves and Takairangi takes on utility duties off the bench I could change my mind. As teams currently stand, I'll tip the Panthers with almost no confidence whatsoever.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result – Eels 18 defeated Panthers 12

North Queensland Cowboys vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

There's been a playmaker inside John Asiata bursting to show himself and he gets another chance to shine. So too Ponga in the fullback role, against the club he joins next season. Clearly the Cowboys are one or two forwards and one or two Thurstons short of a premiership threat at the minute, but they finished well against the Dragons last week and they should be too strong at home.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result – Cowboys 24 defeated Knights 12

Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – Southern Cross Stadium

The extended bench for the Titans creates interest with Hayne, Proctor and Hurrell all named in the 21. Of those, only Hayne is any real chance of playing. If he does, this is quite the task he faces in his return. The Sharks haven't conceded a try in their last two games, and those games were away from home. They're back at their spiritual home with an unchanged line-up, and they'll win this in a canter.

Verdict – Sharks by 22

Result – Titans 16 defeated Sharks 12

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

I spoke of the Tigers earlier but I'll say it again. They aren't good enough. Their right edge defence leaked points last week, and I'm sure Des Hasler noticed. Note that one of the weak links on that Tigers edge is out injured this week but they don't exactly have a truckload of first grade centres to call upon. I'd be tempted to throw Chris Lawrence back out there again, if his hamstrings can take the pace. There's not many levers Cleary can pull, and whatever he does come up with is likely to fall short. Note the venue – it's a Tigers home game played at the Bulldogs home ground.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Tigers 18 defeated Bulldogs 12

Sydney Roosters vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Tuesday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

If you only watch one game this round make sure it's this one, and if you're in Sydney on ANZAC Day you could do worse than stroll down to the Sydney Football Stadium for what is one of the real highlights of the NRL season. My blood flows red, white and blue so perhaps that is colouring my judgement but I'm happy to tip the Chooks here. Their forward pack will be a sterner test for the Dragons than what they faced in round seven. Note that Dylan Napa is some chance of an early return too.  If the Roosters are to be taken seriously as premiership contenders they need a big scalp, and I've a feeling they'll be primed for a breakout performance.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Roosters 13 defeated Dragons 12

Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors – Tuesday night – AAMI Park

This ANZAC Day clash is often over-shadowed by the afternoon game, but is a worthy spectacle indeed. In fact, the Storm have often shown us their very best on this day, and the Storm at their best are better than everyone. Will Chambers returns to strengthen the backline. The Warriors are yet to win away from Mt Smart this season, and they're backing up from a trip to Canberra with a trip to Melbourne. Do they actually go home in between? A game that often surprises on the upside, as the Warriors do like to remind us that NZ is a very important part of ANZAC. In any case, the Storm will get the points in the end.

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 20 defeated Warriors 14

Wally Lewis - round eight selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • RAIDERS vs Sea Eagles
  • Rabbitohs vs BRONCOS
  • Eels vs PANTHERS
  • COWBOYS vs Knights
  • SHARKS vs Titans
  • Tigers vs BULLDOGS
  • ROOSTERS vs Dragons
  • STORM vs Warriors

Pabdul, it is true that plants go better if people talk to them. But it's more along the lines of while your talking to them your doing the little jobs to keep them dancing along. Checking water content, picking off diseased leaves, that sort of thing. Same as why domesticated animals have a longer life span.

pabdul's picture

thanks baggy that makes sense oh well lost another bet to the missus. i better not tell her the plants are plastic then.

Coach Potato's picture

The H word has nothing to do with respect or disrespect.

It's merely pointing out when someone's words don't follow their actions.

You told everyone to keep it to the footy, yet somehow happy to type about Paula Abdul, Corso chicks, Bingo at the RSL, and now FA Cup.

It's not me that needs to take the witness stand.

Congratulations everyone!
You all passed.

Go to your nearest tool shed, grab pliers, and gently pull hooks out of mouth.

It's all been a good old stir.
The whole damn thing.
Gotcha's all.

There was a point to it though. I really do think a bit of fire is great for the game. Just need to limit the brimstone - until Origin season.

Fortress's picture

Once again u turn it on someone else coach this was about you about your post remember when u came back short memory ey u said u were having everyone on and u caught us all out remember coach the question I repeat does that mean u were having us on from when u first came on the thinker site that's the qusrion why have u turned it on me,not sqirming out of this one I can cut and paste that post so everyone van look at it coach so in a but shell, your behaviour has been the same when u recently left and u came back on attacking everyone in sight but u have been doing that since day dot not just one person not 2 people but everyone that does not agree with your sordid mind ,
So coach sorry still waiting for the answer please you have been exposed and I ask the ladies and the jentleman of the jury to carefully read the post after his short exile than we can see what a liar you really are u don't fool me and I hope u don't fool everyone else but then again u can't handle the truth..........answer please waiting !!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

Well I guess I rest my case no answer and the siren about to go!!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

So what the post means is that when he first started on the thinker post he is not the same person to the one who wrote that post meaning that everything he said leading up to the post after his short exile was a different coach so he had to come up with something you see by this point almost everyone was glad he left he had nothing left so bingo he comes up with a bobby dazzler and tells us he was only taking us for a ride to make us all believe that hr really is this great and perfect person when in actual fact he never changed from day dot.

So ladies and gentleman of the jury why didn't he take us for a ride from last year and the year before.

Because u see he wants us to believe that when he came back after his short exit he was not the same person of the past .

You see it was always just fake his really just a perfectly nice bloke we were all caught out we he thinks were the stupid ones for not knowing .

In turn to the jury and say I think we've been had !!!!!!!!!!;;

Baggy_Gee's picture

Sorry Pabdul, I hate to cause a man to lose out to his wife.

Look everyone, Coachy claims he throws out some bait to get a bite. Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't.
You gotta wonder why he does it?.
Apparently he get's some sick satisfaction from baiting people.
Just ignore his crap, talk footy and maybe he'll stop.
I've meet heaps of people like Coach who like to shit stir.
In the end they are the losers.
There's no need for it on this site.
We are all here for a bit of fun, lets keep it that way.

Fortress just ignore it mate. Your Manly are going real well, much better than Coach's Panthers.

tigerholic's picture

Fortress

Coach revels in this situation, the more you come back the more he enjoys it, you would be better off not commenting towards any of his posts unless they are to with the footy.

I know you don't like the Tigers but you must admit they turned up on Sunday against the doggies, I know they are a long way off the standard of the Storm, Manly and Dragons but as a supporter it almost brought a tear to my eyes.

Have a great Anzac Day

a's picture

Fortress do not let Coach get to you all he does is have a go at everyone if you ignore him maybe he might realise what he is doing is pointless if it really bothers you. You can report it here

little-helper@the-thinker.org

And maybe he might do something about it

Tomorrow is a special day for Australia and New Zealand.
Let's commemorate it as it should be.
If you can take part in parades, dawn services etc. do it.
And if you get a chance buy a Digger a beer from WW2, Korea, Vietnam or any of the conflicts our servicemen or women have been involved in be proud to do it. These people keep us safe.
Lest we NEVER forget.

tigerholic's picture

Thinker made a huge statement about behaviour not that long ago, I believe we all owe it to him to play by his rules, if you can't then you need to sign off.

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin Fortress.
All London FA Cup Final. Chelsea v Arsenal.
Date - Sat 27th May 2017.
Wenger knows what required as he's won The Cup on 6 prior occasions.

Yes Fortress, Sea Eagles play some tight and close games. Good to see, on this occasion, that they played like a team and got the spoils. Dylan Walkers looks to be enjoying himself. I think Trent has given him a free reign to run and he sure does that.

BigPeteBx's picture

Pabdul - yr wife is correct with talking to plants.
Bit of a story to doing it though.
Maybe the plant that told you off was Mary J. She's most likely entitled to do that because she needs her leaves to get head.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Baggy G.
It is about care and upkeep with plants. I saw a cartoon on tomatoes one day, many years ago and a tomato bush had headphones on whilst the owner was playing music to them.
No joke, but you can laugh, as I did when I saw it.
The band wasn't Red Hot Chilli Peppers either, as they weren't around in the days I saw that cartoon.

BigPeteBx's picture

Aah - so it s a no dig, no water garden then Pabdul.
Mostly likely to your liking, giving you more time to socialise.
Good luck tomorrow in Round 8.

pabdul's picture

big pete just got back from the trip . you know how we cant see what you look like for some reason i picture u looking like noel cleal but then i imagine coach looking like stewie from family guy. yes you pick the plant that spoke to me and what vic afl team do u support.

BigPeteBx's picture

Tigerholic - the Tigpies kept in the game and pounced when they needed to. Cost me a win though, but they did it with class and were entitled to celebrate like they did.
When Ivan and his board decide on whats needed to get this side right, they'll be taking a pantec to Mulgoa Road and most likely getting some offloads to bring back to Campbelltown.

Dont mind The Tigers from Balmain days. I ran into Lozza Nichols one day at Central Rly Stn, around two years before he passed away and we got talking. We supplied a couple of guys from up this way to the Tigers Support Team. Strapper and high performance doctor. Enough, but Tigers will come good, all they need is confidence and a few good wins to convince themselves.

BigPeteBx's picture

Agree Mark about your ANZAC Day sentiments towards those who put their lives on the line.
We will NEVER forget mate.

Keep well and have a nice remembering day tomorrow.

BigPeteBx's picture

No Pabdul - not a Crusher lookalike.
Noel and Les played with a former school mate of mine from here at Warialda and Sawtell, a number of years ago.
I'm not BIG as in weight. I'm 6ft 3 in the old scale and weigh 85 kgs.
I was a sprinter in my days, bowled more than bat in cricket, played basketball and soccer and couple of years of r/league.
I was mistaken for David Hookes on a coach coming to NSW from Adelaide Greyhound Coach Terminal quite a number of years ago.
I have a mo and part my hair rather easily these days. My wife used to reckon I looked like DKL and my late mum sometimes called me Magnum.

Now for AFL team I support, yes it is a Victorian one and I recall Coach having a shot at the same club here a couple of weeks ago, but it was only in his passing and ideals of speaking out. You being a former "pom", might just happen to be on the money with the same team with black and white stripes. Carn Pabdul!!!!!

a's picture

If people behave badly they should leave no questions

pabdul's picture

ok tom selleck before we get to afl. i used to talk to Laurie on the country platform after work. he lived at springwood and died 2 weeks before the joint ventures first game in 2000.
he reckons he got on the train and he was buggered from the wool shed and wanted a seat. near the doors was an old lady with a cat in a traveling cage. he said unless the cat had paid his fare he needs to move. the lady refused. when the train pulled into strathfield he picked up the cage and threw the cat onto the platform. the lady said what have u done. he said i think i just invented the catapult.

BigPeteBx's picture

Pabdul - u r cruel speaking about your dad on the car roof like that.
But I know it was only your usual sarcasm and sharpness coming out.
I didn't smoke so didn't need to give it up. Like a beer or three, when in company. Like me potatoes whole, but sometimes need to smash/mash em. Love me shoestring chips, but not off the block.

a's picture

When don't speak to your dad like that

BigPeteBx's picture

Hahahaha Pabdul - how does your wife Paula put up with you.
We have a fellow from Orange works with us and he always has some words for the day written or something cryptic.
Mind you he and you meet tomorrow, as he is a Dragons and Chelsea tragic.

Where did you work at mate or what was the trade/business you were in, when you needed to make a quid?

Fortress's picture

Yes tiger great win to your boys I did tiip them if u go back to my post, look mate please I don't hate the tigers OK hate is a bad word its just friendly rivalry in fact I'm a big Steve roach fan met him many times and he has been helping the manly forward pack with advice to Trent Barrett and as you can see we beat Canberra who have a monster pack so we are going well you have to say that was the game of the year I think I cried when they won it was just great against the odds against Canberra I'm Canberra, but then again we have a great record down there and I had a feeling an upset was in the air.

But well done to your team don't worry they will come good u support your club not a player so keep the spirit.

Mark ,christine,"a" rocket big Pete ,pabdul.don't worry im here to stay I can't help I just love my team OK I get excited sometimes but they mean a lot to me it makes me happy when they win not so much when they lose but then you move on and know that there is always next week so it was great to see them beat such a great side like Canberra and they just never gave up.

Should be a beauty tomorrow with the chooks and drags I just wanna say Anzac day is a real sad day for me because gran dad never came back so I always look forward to the service with a lump iny throat.

Happy Anzac day everyone lest we forget!!!!!!!!!!!

a's picture

Yeah it should be a beauty tomorrow

pabdul's picture

ill keep it short coz its afl but im a bulldogs supporter for the last 40 yrs. i didn't think id see a flag in my life time. but i can die now ive witnessed heaven . why do u support the two yeams that most people hate.
i guess the BX stands for bloody xcuses

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello there "a".
Nah just Pabdul, in one of his recent posts he made about his dad.

I usually like to read a past post before I answer some here, in case they are aligned or an answer is given and it saves a double-up.

Cheers "a" and have a remembering day tomorrow. I'd take it ANZAC Day is a big one up that way with army etc. I knew some guys from Lavarack Barracks.

a's picture

Yeah should be 2 good games hey BigPete

pabdul's picture

good onya a
your comp is tougher than most thought. im enjoying it. grest idea

a's picture

Thanks Pabdil it's pretty telling when half of the players are on strikes and the round hasn't finished

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Pabdul - just one of those things mate. I didn't take the hate sense in sport into it, when I started following them.
Far from excuses Pab,
Bx is the abbreviation of the City where I live. Its been used for years.

Am I due an answer mate on your trade, or were you a man in blue in charge of the blue light taxi's.

BigPeteBx's picture

U r certainly right there "a" with both games tomorrow.
I don't think Warriors will lay down too easy for Storm.
I wonder what the Melbourne weather is forecasting by kick-off.

pabdul's picture

at the time i was chief concierge at star city just before i went into customs at the airport.

Baggy_Gee's picture

That win last year by the Dogs was one of the proper Cinderella stories of the sport. So glad you got to experience a good win. Hope I don't have to wait that long for the BOYS to do the same.

BigPeteBx's picture

She's cool Fortress.
I know where u r coming from......an eye for an eye.

Remember tomorrow mate......most do!!
Some of the disrespectful, vandalising, thieving and corrupt crap that walks the streets these days, should be drafted into an army, trained in the rights of life, as well as learn an apprenticeship.
My dad served in New Guinea and one could well imagine what they went through up there.
In our Town Square there is a Carillon and Boer War memorials. Not small in structure, by any means. The Boer Memorial has the name plates all updated on it. Yes, Harry Breaker Morant is inscribed on there as well.
Lot of history here............

BigPeteBx's picture

If that is fair dinkum Pabdul, I say good one mate.
I was over at Star City last year for Julios concert.
A fellow from here is in Customs in Darwin, but two close friends of mine drive for CommCars and mind you, once were both on NSW Police bikes at B/Bay and Warilla - now retired.
Guess what, they live in Sharks country at Sutherland Shire and yes, as I mentioned before, are good friends with Flanno, whom I think you said you might have played footy with.
As I don't know what area of Sydney you actually live in, they might not be far. If u r a Balmain area boy due to yr dad, I like it around there.

pabdul's picture

i live in Newington which was the athletes village at the sydney olympics. i lived in the st george district but later travelled over the tom uglys bridge to play in the shire. why u ask......so i could punch a shirey and not get arrested.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks for being honest with me.
Nah, just like the geographic locations of some we get to speak with more often or on a friendlier note.
One of the two I previously wrote about, his brother played r/union for St George and then became Sthn Districts when they merged with Pt Hacking, if my memory hasn't faded too much.
Newington College, I seem to believe, were very good in rowing, in years gone by. Did you also do your schooling in that area?

pabdul's picture

i went to school in the eastern suburbs but i was caught jigging surfing down bronte or at rushcutters bay ten pin bowling alley

pabdul's picture

on a parting note dont know if your a betting man but a pies/roosters multi is looking good.
shit i better go i forgot dad's still on the roof of the camry

BigPeteBx's picture

Keep well Pabdul,
Nice speaking and getting to know of interests.
Not a real betting man. Thanks anyway. Used to follow trots here for years, but betting these days is all over the shop. You can bet on anything in footy, right up to 5 mins from full-time.
Hope dad wasn't too cold.
One of my good friends, now in WA, he lived in boundary of Kingsford and Mascot. Bob McCarthy's backyard backed onto theirs.

u keep pulling out those coincidences sat next to Bob's son darren in yr8.

Hi BigPete,
Just reading through the more recent comments and yours posted Mon 24/4/17 10.24pm caught my eye, as Breaker Harry Morant is a relation of mine. As he was the black sheep in the Morant family, my Aunt would not discuss him but was pleased when Renmark (SA and his old stomping ground) finally were able to acknowledge his contribution to the Boer War and a special plaque was erected at the local War memorial.
My father was an Anzac and a returned soldier who also served in New Guinea. Because he returned when so many did not, I cherish the good memories we were able to share – our friendly rivalry over the soccer (Manchester United or Arsenal) and the test cricket. Looking back, I realised he was extremely good at pressing the buttons to egg me on. That sounds a bit like some on this site!!!
I find that Anzac Day and the time leading up to the special services are a time for reflection - for those who sacrificed their lives in any war so that we could enjoy the choices we are able to have in lifestyle, passion in whichever style of footy we choose to follow, the roses/plants we grow, and the fact that we are able to share those views publicly – such as this website.
Just imagine having to swap our way of life for something similar to Nth Korea – you disagree with your leaders every view then the whole family is persecuted.
Enjoy Anzac Day everyone in the manner of your choice, remembering those who gave us the right to choose – Lest we forget.
Cheers
Mary S

Can I share some poetry from Laurence Binyon.
Laurence Who? you may be excused for thinking.

Stanza 4 should reveal all.

http://www.greatwar.co.uk/poems/laurence-binyon-for-the-fallen.htm

Originally written for the British forces, now inseparable from ANZAC Day and other days of Remembrance. A poem that speaks to both sides of the world, all corners of the world in fact.

A day of happiness this is not.
