Round eight selections

Canberra Raiders vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – GIO Stadium

The Raiders are warming up nicely as the season progresses, and are on track for their fourth win in succession in what is a rare game for them under the bright lights on a Friday night. Their victory over the Warriors last week was full of merit – two late withdrawals left the Raiders with just 15 players to work with. It's been nine years since a team have done that in the NRL, and not only did the Raiders win but they were strong at the tail end of that 20-8 victory. They are the real deal. The Sea Eagles were strong at the tail end of their round seven game too, but left their run too late. Martin Taupau returns up front for the visitors and Manly will need every one of their big men performing if they want to match the might of the Raiders pack. That said, the forwards battle won't be where this game is won (and that's unusual). That edge attack from Leilua and Rapana is probably the best in the league, and it's that edge where Manly have conceded most of their points this year. Those looking at try-scoring betting options take note, and for those just looking for a tip....the Raiders are specials.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Sea Eagles 20 defeated Raiders 18

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

In the last five weeks the Bunnies only victories have been at the expense of the spare tyres at the Panthers (by a solitary point) and the Knights by six. In their three losses they got towelled up by the Chooks, Storm and Bulldogs. I think the Broncos have more in common with the teams that towelled up the Bunnies. Sam Burgess gets to lace on the boots, which makes the Bunnies slightly more competitive but not competitive enough to win. I thought the Raiders were specials, but the Broncos even moreso.

Verdict – Broncos by 14

Result – Broncos 25 defeated Rabbitohs 24

Parramatta Eels vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

While the Eels vs Tigers game on Easter Monday was entertaining to watch, few would have walked away thinking either team would be competing with the better sides in the competition. The Eels looked good late, but the Tigers made them so. Penrith are fast becoming the most disappointing team this season (which isn't easy when you're in the same competition as the Warriors). I suggested many times last season that the Panthers looked very good against the poorer teams but struggled against the very best teams. This theory had me in a running battle with you-know-who...but I was right. This year they've flogged the Tigers and the Knights, but lost to the Dragons, Roosters and Sharks. It looks like nothing has changed. Now I just have to decide if the Eels are a good team or not. I don't think they are, but keep an eye on the team line-ups. If Kenny Edwards starts at fullback (ignore this...I'm an idiot), Gutherson switches to the halves and Takairangi takes on utility duties off the bench I could change my mind. As teams currently stand, I'll tip the Panthers with almost no confidence whatsoever.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result – Eels 18 defeated Panthers 12

North Queensland Cowboys vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

There's been a playmaker inside John Asiata bursting to show himself and he gets another chance to shine. So too Ponga in the fullback role, against the club he joins next season. Clearly the Cowboys are one or two forwards and one or two Thurstons short of a premiership threat at the minute, but they finished well against the Dragons last week and they should be too strong at home.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result – Cowboys 24 defeated Knights 12

Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – Southern Cross Stadium

The extended bench for the Titans creates interest with Hayne, Proctor and Hurrell all named in the 21. Of those, only Hayne is any real chance of playing. If he does, this is quite the task he faces in his return. The Sharks haven't conceded a try in their last two games, and those games were away from home. They're back at their spiritual home with an unchanged line-up, and they'll win this in a canter.

Verdict – Sharks by 22

Result – Titans 16 defeated Sharks 12

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

I spoke of the Tigers earlier but I'll say it again. They aren't good enough. Their right edge defence leaked points last week, and I'm sure Des Hasler noticed. Note that one of the weak links on that Tigers edge is out injured this week but they don't exactly have a truckload of first grade centres to call upon. I'd be tempted to throw Chris Lawrence back out there again, if his hamstrings can take the pace. There's not many levers Cleary can pull, and whatever he does come up with is likely to fall short. Note the venue – it's a Tigers home game played at the Bulldogs home ground.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Tigers 18 defeated Bulldogs 12

Sydney Roosters vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Tuesday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

If you only watch one game this round make sure it's this one, and if you're in Sydney on ANZAC Day you could do worse than stroll down to the Sydney Football Stadium for what is one of the real highlights of the NRL season. My blood flows red, white and blue so perhaps that is colouring my judgement but I'm happy to tip the Chooks here. Their forward pack will be a sterner test for the Dragons than what they faced in round seven. Note that Dylan Napa is some chance of an early return too.  If the Roosters are to be taken seriously as premiership contenders they need a big scalp, and I've a feeling they'll be primed for a breakout performance.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Roosters 13 defeated Dragons 12

Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors – Tuesday night – AAMI Park

This ANZAC Day clash is often over-shadowed by the afternoon game, but is a worthy spectacle indeed. In fact, the Storm have often shown us their very best on this day, and the Storm at their best are better than everyone. Will Chambers returns to strengthen the backline. The Warriors are yet to win away from Mt Smart this season, and they're backing up from a trip to Canberra with a trip to Melbourne. Do they actually go home in between? A game that often surprises on the upside, as the Warriors do like to remind us that NZ is a very important part of ANZAC. In any case, the Storm will get the points in the end.

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 20 defeated Warriors 14

Wally Lewis - round eight selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • RAIDERS vs Sea Eagles
  • Rabbitohs vs BRONCOS
  • Eels vs PANTHERS
  • COWBOYS vs Knights
  • SHARKS vs Titans
  • Tigers vs BULLDOGS
  • ROOSTERS vs Dragons
  • STORM vs Warriors

Big Pete you are going well in the tipping, I cant see that far up the ladder but I hear you are up there.

Coach Potato's picture

No Big Pete. You misread.

I was trying to highlight how some purple people are fixated on talking footy, so must mean you too. They must be telling you to change your ways. Not me, I don't mind typing outside the square.

Also reminds me of that H word when talk is about Paula Abdul, fish and chips, drooling over women in bikinis, and playing bingo at the RSL. Definitely reminds me of that capital letter.

Not that I would mention it of course, as per Thinker's required etiquette.

pabdul's picture

its funny coach how you like to mention paula abdul coz when i think of you i think of ronan keating.
didn't he sing
you say it best when you say nothing at all. i know your humming big pete.

BigPeteBx's picture

Ok Coach - point taken.
But there are ways of expressing ourselves.
If it wasn't for footy (all codes accepted I take it - not just NRL), we wouldn't get to speak with guys at far north of Qld and how they are going or what has affected them emotionally.

We came here to tip and speak NRL, SoO and footy in general. It does expand from that and it cant be helped, as there is more to life than footy. Others just need to look at the bigger picture, or maybe it is me and being too friendly. I've found some got to know me and they wouldn't return comment, if they didn't want to.

I think Thinkers etiquette was directed more about manner of speech and use of said words/language in mention.
Not about a good beer, fish and chips or fishing and crabbing or beaches and babes, cheerleaders or certain types of potato in the garden bed and how to cultivate them.
I care for 42 roses (in my spare time) of the flowering type, so there is something extra for us all to drool over.

Keep well and good luck this afternoon in The Battle of West Sydney.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Young Rocket......long season to go with tipping and ladder.
Quite a few on same points......makes it interesting and competitive.
I was 4th, but dropped back a couple of notches, after last round.
I'm going fairly well in Fox Sports EPL Tipping as well, to date.

You keep well mate and Broncs got home last night, but wasn't easy and full of remarks directed at result.
Cheers - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Pabdul - humming like a bee.
How you been mate?

Heading out shortly, so will check back later this evening.
Good luck against The Drags on ANZAC Day and don't forget your rosemary (to wear). Paula can hold your hand, so you don't get led astray.

Keep well and keep the friendship alive, even if I am Manly, because I wouldn't been seen for the beaches.

pabdul's picture

yeah good big fella
i volunteer every Saturday at bayswater nursing home manning reception and listen to their life experiences i love it.
its a 6 hr break from Paula's nagging and singing.
its hard for me to say but it was a good win for the silvertails
im as happy as tedesco in a roosters jersey.

Coach Potato's picture

still think you're not getting it.
I agree with you.
It's good to have different flavours ie subjects and not just vanilla.

I think it's hilarious that the occasion blow-in will pipe up and say, hey start talkin' footy - when they don't contribute their own views whatsoever. Telling people what to say and not say, when they have nothing to say.

It's still a free world Pete until North Korea or Donald Trump remove your rights. Write what you want to write I say.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Nothing about the result, it was how the result was reached. I backed the ponies, and exactly the same as if the BOYS get up today in the same circumstances.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi Mr Fortress, been following Everton in the Premier league around the same time I started following the Dragons in 1969. Anyway to all, there were two ripper games last night on TV. I think Souths were a tad unlucky with that try that was passed from the ground. As far as I know if the ball carrying hand touches the ground with an opponent touching the player it should be deemed to be a tackle. Crickey, can't figure how that one got away. The Raiders played with a lot of heart but gee have to admit Manly probably deserved it. That Rapana try was unbelievable. Fairdinkum, how do they do that stuff. I'm glad that goal post rule was changed, I think around 2010? otherwise we wouldn't be seeing these great athletic tries. Anyway, got a wedding to attend. Catch you all later. Cheers from Mr Awesome,

a's picture

Yeah WTF did American put Donald Trump in charge he takes everyone's rights away he should ever be incharge

christine's picture

Coach don't you mean it's a free world until trump applies pressure to the red button ( next war is already looming ) ...

Fortress's picture

So u think potato brain that you know everything bout football do you,you put up stats that anyone can think up.

End of statement end of subject.

pabdul's picture

a's picture

Fortress's picture

Thanks pabdul good luck tonyour team.picked them in my tipping will be very close.

No I'm fine just wanna talk to and post to normal people on this site don't care too much bout rubbish have a great weekend.

Gee that Jackson Hastings is a talent his dad Kevin was a great chooky and looks so much like his old man great step and natural ability.a star in the making.

In was watching some old 70" s finals and grsndfinals some of those eagles and roosters clashes were awesome and its the same these days the last game a few weeks back was a ripper are we both heading for another finals showdown who knows.

Big Pete all good just wanna post to people I want to post to it was a great victory not many tipped us but great to prove people wrong I heard Ricky Stewart after the game he said that the mighty eagles were a team to be feared and he knew it was going to be s very tough game with so many line breakers and never say die attitude .
Our completion rate was incredible 100% in the first half only 3 errors the whole match the forwards really stood up against a monster Canberra pack.

All in all a cracking fast game with great defence from both clubs loved every minute of it.

Christine thanks for your kind words keeo on keeping on.

Rocket a win is a win you got the 2 points and sometimes you have to win the close ones it was a close hard game.

Mr awesome yes Everton and arsenal both close on the ladder yes it was a nail biting game but we won have a great time at the wedding.

Hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend and as the great ray hadlee always says punt high and follow on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pabdul's picture

i actuality know kevin hastings when he was a barman at easts leagues he picked up my sister. they had 2 dates then she found out he was married. because of sterlo and mortimer hes probaly the best half never to play for Australia.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Was that 42 bushes or 42 species of rose Pete, because the former is quite a feat to maintain, and the latter is just incredible. How are they going with the wind/rains down there?

Coach Potato's picture

christine, yes it's worrying times but until that time comes, this next few days should help to remind that the generations passed have seen worse.

a's picture

Trump should have never won the election

christine's picture

Coach I know that from my own experience my mum grew up in a bomb shelter in Holland during the war ( that was hard ) ...

christine's picture

Thinker Bring back johnny ray we need him to lighten the load with his humour & padbul when johnny ray is in fine form which was most of the time in the beginning on this site you two would of had a field day .

Fortress's picture

Yes padbull a great player indeed always wondered why he didn't play reps maybe politics.well his son may well do what his dad wanted to do.

Bring back Johnny Ray

Rocket Ryan's picture

Oh No Coach the eels have jumped out of the gate they look good don't tell me no it cant be 12 blot surely not.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I don't think the top 8 is set in stone. The BOYS will be there in the end of the season at the pointy end.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Hey coach, Norman scored I side five minutes in each half. Going well so far. Still 25 minutes for the BOYS to drop the bundle though.

Fortress's picture

Hey everyone good time to grab a bite a drink a rest the footy starts at 5.30pm interesting games tonight enjoy.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Another poor display by the panthers where are you coach come out from under the lounge we are off to Suncorp for another touch up Darius is waiting YeeeeeeeeeeeeHarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Coach Potato's picture

I'm here. Not hiding.

Not good, but nothing I haven't highlighted for weeks.

Also nothing I'm not used to.
Panthers supporters know the lows better than anyone.
Doesn't change. Still the biggest fan.
Can't work out why game plans changed in the off-season though.

Other teams decided that the Panthers 2016 style was something to model themselves on this year, and why not.

We changed what wasn't broke, and we broke it.

christine's picture

Thinker I bet your sorry now you didn't change your tip to eels .

Fortress's picture

Now the under 12's match is done let's get down to the real footy gosh what a difference a day makes from the drama and high standards of yesturdays games to well u all saw it for yourselves the admission fee should be tefunded !!!!!!!!!!!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Ahhhh, it took 5hrs and 5 minutes to break your word fortress.
Not sure how happy I am that the BOYS let in 12 points but as I didn't see it I don't know if our usual problems were there.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Refunded was the word of the day as well princess, nearly got it though.

Coach Potato's picture

u12s Parra beat your mob at home by 8 didn't they?
They only got us by 6.

Fortress's picture

Yes but u see ur at the bottom of the ladder and if u can get ur brain to work properly which could be a mission that's a massive difference oh well guess once a loser always one

One more thing we have beaten teams inside the 8 what tripe was served up today a lot of things have happened since round 1 we have moved up a gear today"s game was gearless.

Haaaaaahaaaaaaaa yeeeeehaaaaaa

Just a footnote u have the broncos next week get ready for a wooden year yeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaa

mark ashford's picture

Hi All
No computer access last night or today...been garage saleing.
Firstly congrats to Fortress, Big Pete and other Manly fans.
A win in Canberra is something to crow about.
Coach I have watched plenty of replays of Milford's efforts and, like the refs and bunker, see no problem.
Perhaps you should concern yourself with what the Panthers are doing and leave the Broncs to Rocket and me.
Seriously how dumb is Sam Burgess?
Just escaped a shoulder charge last week (maybe rightly) and does it again. Only this time there will be no escape.
Madge should direct his anger to Sam not the refs.
Baggy....well done a good win for your Eels. I was always sorry the Broncs let Corey Norman go.

mark ashford's picture

A very good call Coach

mark ashford's picture

Sorry Coach I thought my above comment would appear under your reply to Christine. Anzac weekend is very special to all Australians.

mark ashford's picture

BigPete.
42 roses, man that is something.
I take it they are of various hues and bouquets.
Mate I have trouble keeping a couple of vegie plants going but do enjoy a little gardening.
Are we allowed to talk roses? probably not so...
Will Aaron Woods become a Bulldog?
Will Tedesco became the next fullback at the Roosters?
Where will Foran end up?
See I'm back on track.

a's picture

Cowboys win yes Inhlad I watched robs game live

mark ashford's picture

"a" and Tailspin
Good stuff by the boys in Townsville but was a game you should win.
Any idea when JT will be back?

Tailspin's picture

Bloody hell, I had a gut feeling that the Eagles would beat the Raiders, congrats to the manly supporters, oh well my bad for being a chicken shit. And I think that the Panthers are goners coach, they are playing terrible, what is going on with them? But good job for the Eels, they are getting their mojo back. And of course, go the Cowboys, still a lot of mistakes but still improving which is what they should be doing without the magic of JT. Hopefully back next round with Granville and Coote.

Coach Potato's picture

I'm glad it's Broncos next week.
At last a game Panthers are not expected to win.
They've started favourites 7 times out of 8.
Even against bloody Sharks a couple of weeks ago.

Expectation doesn't seem to be their friend.
That's probably their biggest asset going to Suncorp in 5 days.

The big E doesn't get a plane ticket.

christine's picture

Mark they said jt will be back next week & possible coote .

Tailspin's picture

Well the way they are playing coach, I'm expecting a big blow out to the Broncos. Even though the Panthers have beaten them their previously. Something is very wrong with the Panthers at the moment.
Maybe its that grub, Gus.

Coach Potato's picture

Sharks are goners.
I tipped them.

Tailspin's picture

So did I. :(

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Chris & Tailspin for the update.
Cowboys back to full strength will be formidable.

mark ashford's picture

What do you mean "Sharks are goners"
I don't have fox.
