Round six selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Roosters may be perched in the upper reaches of the competition ladder, but when one looks at who they've played this season one starts to second guess them a little. They've played just one other team that's going well (the Sea Eagles) and they lost. The only other team they've played in the top eight is Penrith – now Penrith are barely in the top eight and the Chooks were pretty lucky to beat them. Meanwhile the Broncos have beaten the teams that are currently fifth and sixth and went painfully close to beating the teams that are currently first and fourth. Their loss last week to the Bulldogs was disappointing, but conditions on the night certainly didn't help. A return to a dry surface should see an improved performance from the home side. Note also the injury to Dylan Napa for the tricolours. He must have been on the verge of an Origin call-up this season and his absence evens up that forward contest. Potentially the game of the round in front of what should be a big crowd for a Thursday night.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos 32 defeated Roosters 8

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

We must give credit where it's due, and the Knights deserve some credit. But for one absolute blow-out they've been competitive week-in and week-out. Given the cattle they have at their disposal it's hard to ask for more than that. If the Bulldogs take this game lightly they'll come unstuck, but I'm leaping to the conclusion that Des will insist that they aren't in form until they are stringing wins together. Two is a string...for the Bulldogs at least.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Bulldogs 22 defeated Knights 12

Penrith Panthers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pepper Stadium

The Panthers were given a lesson in professionalism by the Melbourne Storm, then three of their players backed up that effort by breaking curfew and getting on the drink. So no Moylan, no Blake and no Hiku this weekend. They'll be sitting alongside the injured Peachey, Cartwright, and Fisher-Harris which leaves one of the most talented rosters in the competition light on for talent. Some young kids get a chance to step up in front of a home crowd. Some will handle it and some won't. There's enough doubts for me and I'm happy to tip the Bunnies in an upset.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result – Rabbitohs 21 defeated Panthers 20

Manly Sea Eagles vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

Not so long ago the Dragons couldn't score in a you-know-where, but right now they're top two and they've scored more points than every other team. How this transformation has occurred is anyone's guess but it's a delight to see. So too the Sea Eagles who looked destined for another ho-hum season. They've now won three on the trot and they're entertaining to boot. They're back at Lottoland and the last time they were here they flogged the Bulldogs 36-0. We'll have nothing like that scoreboard this weekend, but the Dragons are Dugan-less and his absence gives the home side a slight edge. With or without Dugan it's the game of the round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Dragons 35 defeated Sea Eagles 10

Gold Coast Titans vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

There's probably a way for the Raiders to lose this game, but there's at least a thousand ways they can win it. I'm happy to take $1.42. Good things.

Verdict – Raiders by 16

Result – Raiders 42 defeated Titans 16

North Queensland Cowboys vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

I can see Cleary now that Taylor's gone. A tough road trip for the new coach. The inury to Granville makes it a little easier but there was nothing in that Tigers attack last weekend that should worry the Cowboys too much. A tough road trip and a long quite flight home.

Verdict – Cowboys by 22

Result – Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 16

New Zealand Warriors vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

In the first two rounds the Eels beat the Sea Eagles and the Dragons, and all of sudden that looks like darn good form. Since then the Eels have been close to woeful. That said, they'll find this contest a lot easier than their last two outings against the Sharks and the Raiders. Given the players lining up for the Warriors on Sunday I can understand why they are a warm favourite on a Sunday at home, but goodess gracious you can't tip them with confidence. I'm leaning their way but barely so, because they've been awful and they fell over the line against an injury-depleted Titans last week. I'm assuming Foran will be better for the run last week, and his combinations with the rest of that Warriors spine should continue to improve. I'm not remotely confident, but the Eels have given me nothing to be confident about either. The home side...by default really.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result – Warriors 22 defeated Eels 10

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – AAMI Park

Call me a romantic old fool, but that was rather cute watching Cooper talking us through his decision to leave the Storm at the end of season 2017. My guess for where he ends up next season – the Dragons. I'm not sure how the Storm will respond to the news but they usually respond to just about everything by winning. I expect Cooper will feel some relief now that the decision is made and he'll be very keen indeed to do all he can to end his career in purple with another premiership. Clearly the Sharks can beat the Storm – they did exactly that in the 2016 grand final, but they've been to AAMI Park seven times previously and they're yet to find a win.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – SHarks 11 defeated Storm 2

Wally Lewis - round six selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BRONCOS vs Roosters
  • Knights vs BULLDOGS
  • PANTHERS vs Rabbitohs
  • SEA EAGLES vs Dragons
  • Titans vs RAIDERS

  • WARRIORS vs Eels

People are suggesting that Nathan might join Ivan when his contract is up in a couple of years.

I guess at that time, if Panthers refuse to make him a decent offer, if he's willing to earn less, or conversely if the money-strapped Tigers can match the Panthers offer - I guess that would be life. Good luck to him although it would be a potential future great of the game lost to another team.

Problem I see with this theory is the fact Cleary (Snr) was told he was unwanted in a year that Penrith finished 2nd last. What makes people think that he will last any longer at the cellar-dwelling Tigers if his softly, softly approach to on-field performance doesn't show any results? By the time Nathan is free to go somewhere else, he might again still be the sole bread-winner of the household. Try anywhere out of Sydney and it would almost need to become Nathan's decision to uproot his own family. That scenario doesn't seem too likely at this stage.

Talk of Nathan leaving Panthers can succinctly be described as pure hogwash.

Dynamite dreams pototo brain about to go BANG hahahaha and you still have an origin series to lose
Good luck coach you will need it.0

Coach Potato's picture

Dynamite still a dream, Firecracker the most I've seen this year.

tigerholic's picture

Rocket
I love the confidence you display, you Queenslanders are heading for a fall and it comes this year, Watch This Space" Rocket, I want to hear you say well done top NSW when we clean up the series.
Coach Boy
The Tigers are cellar dwellers and I can't argue with that, in fact any comment relating to their team song, their piss poor performances, the fact that the big 4 have not resigned can not be argued, please feel free to take all of the swipes you like but keep this as your last comment from me this morning Coachy Boy, ever heard of Karma.

Have a great day, bring on round 6 and bring on the Cowboys.

pabdul's picture

if you look at the bottom 3 teams their halves are relatively inexperienced. the top 5 teams have at least 1 mature head in their halves. if i was penrith id use

pabdul's picture

wallace and Moylan
use martin like a craig wing roll . Moylan can kick goals.

Doggie's picture

Where the hell is Mcdonald Jones stadium.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I think it's not far from La La Loopsy Beach (aka Brookvale). There are some horrible names these days, makes Pepper Stadium sound normal.

Johnny Ray's picture

Tigerholic i can see why you and tigers 717 do not back your team having made that mistake myself last week i now know how embarrassing it is to be a tiger supporter.

tigerholic's picture

Coach

Get out from under whatever cover you have dived under, I know you are under attack but it is not like you to just let everyone have open season on you, come back and settle the natives!!

Panthers in a mess Coach, here comes their dive towards the bottom, its not that bad sitting on bottom.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Broncos out of the eight big game coming up were specials.

Taka's picture

Hi The Thinker, what should I do to be included on the tipster ladder.

Well here are my tips for round6:

Broncos by 10
Bulldogs by 12
Panthers by 12
Sea Eagles by 6
Raiders by 16
Cowboys by 20
Warriors by 1
Storms by 1

Go the mighty bulldogs...!

BigPeteBx's picture

U r certainly right about ground names Baggy G.
I have a 2017 draw that still shows Manly matches at Brookvale.

1300 Smiles sounds like The Land of Smiles. I preferred your ground when it was Cumberland Oval, as one could honestly relate to where that was.
Pirtek rhymes so much with Perk Up. So Lottoland isn't that bad after all.
Eels in Kiwi Land this round - good luck over the ditch mate. A Steinlager and a Mudbath, might just ease the tension there.

a's picture

Yeah exactly round 9 Broncos vs Panthers go Broncos

mark ashford's picture

Who will be favourites to sign Cronk for next year?
I believe he is 34 ??? and while he is one of the best halves in the game how long a contract would you offer him?

Fortress's picture

Tiger hollic cry me a river coach is big enough to defend himself ,and no Christine I don't condone his actions but what do you want me ri do I don't run this site.

Johnny Ray's picture

Pabdul. I really would like to call myself a comic but then dude I suck at Christopher Walken impressions. That's the first rule of comedy that everybody needs to learn. Rule number one : nobody's funnier than Christopher Walken : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B07KQ7WgUJI LOLS ! ;-D

Johnny Awesome's picture

Dugan is a huge loss for the Dragons but Jason Nightingale replaces Josh Dugan at fullback = tick. Kurt Mann on the wing?Eusn Aitken at centre = tick Hame Sele replaces Jacob Host on the bench. All in all I think my Dragons have enough grunt up front and balance to beat Manly. Let's hope Dragons prevail, gee I love my Dragons cheers from Mr Awesome.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Cooper kronk to panthers and cleary to the tigers wouldn't happen would it

mark ashford's picture

Johnny Ray
Christopher Walken is one of my favourite actors, watched your you tube and not too impressed. It seems those New Yorkers all talk the f--king same.
So how can we decide who is impersonating who when they all sound like Donald Trump, only difference is the pursed lips.

mark ashford's picture

Rocket how about Cooper to the Broncs to replace Hunt and we fly him to Sydney when he needs "a little contact" with his loved one.
Doesn't really need to train as he knows it all.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Well well well, is Penrith starting to get full of all the pains as an old window? Trying to get win with what's going on could be as hard as putting a pair of socks on a rooster. Interesting, round coming up. Cheers from Mr Awesome

christine's picture

Please don't let bulldogs sign cronk sorry taka just my thought , my father did see tara rushston at a Sydney fc game at Allianz stadium he sat directly behind her .

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans,

I am not here to decide who is good and who is bad, who stays and who goes, who is a bully and who is being bullied. I simply don't have the time to be here helping you people sort out your disagreements, and if I did have the time I wouldn't want to anyway. This is meant to be a bit of fun – somewhere to talk about the footy and hopefully tip a few winners.

I urge you all, once again, to get back to talking about the football. If a particular person says something that you find annoying...ignore them.

In the meantime I will be removing any comments from this page that I feel are inappropriate. That way the people who come here to read about the footy get to see what they came here for.

I'm not taking sides...other than the teams I have picked to win in round six.

All the best

tigerholic's picture

Morning Folks
So very glad that Thinker has cleared the way to return this site to football, I still think all was well with everyone but lets talk footy.

I see this weeks games as a bit of a tester, there are a few 50/50 games that could easily go either way like the Tigers V Cowboys(joking).
I am going to deliberate a little longer this week, maybe Rocket and Coach can give us their insight early.

Seaeagle47's picture

While where all apologetic, I'd like to take this opportunity to apologise to tigerholic for taking the piss out of him for having a massive bald head,

I also have a bald head but it only has 1 eye ????.

Your lucky your kittens aren't up against the mighty SEAEAGLES, we'd definately put 50pts on ya's.

Its hard to soar like a SEAEAGLE, when your surrounded by TURKEYS.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Tigerholic follow thinker his thinkering is sound again
Are you not only a tiger supporter but suffer from a massive bald head now that is almost 2 much.

christine's picture

Thinker or anyone else please tell me why fisher harris is out for panthers ?

Coach Potato's picture

I know it's not til Round 22, but I can't but wish I was a fly on the car window when Cleary Jnr and Snr drive to the game at Penrith to play against each other.

What will they talk about?
Which one will be driving?
Will they not talk for three days after the game?

Would love to know the answers.

christine's picture

Fortress at least I was looking out for you .

mark ashford's picture

Hi all.
Got a bit carried away recently, got completely off the track.
Thank heavens for the wisdom of Thinker.
Cooper Cronk has got plenty in the bank so probably doesn't need the loot. Whatever he decides I wish him well.
Coach your Cleary/Cleary question gave me a smile.
You can just imagine dinner that night.
Probably only Mrs Cleary having anything to say.
Like "Now boys be nice"

Broncs have dropped Jai Arrow (a very big dude) for Cody Nikorima (a little dude). Has Wayne forgotten how large the Roosters are.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Bigger question Coach, Will Snr leave Jnr out in the cold and just take himself. or bump him out at the lights and tell him to walk?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Unless the Roosters get out to a massive lead the little dude will allow the other little guys to carve up as the big dudes tire.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Good god Coach, what was this breech of protocol? Should I get on the Bunnies as the roughie of the round?

Rocket Ryan's picture

Coach can you shine some light on the drinking session behind the academy
