Round six selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Roosters may be perched in the upper reaches of the competition ladder, but when one looks at who they've played this season one starts to second guess them a little. They've played just one other team that's going well (the Sea Eagles) and they lost. The only other team they've played in the top eight is Penrith – now Penrith are barely in the top eight and the Chooks were pretty lucky to beat them. Meanwhile the Broncos have beaten the teams that are currently fifth and sixth and went painfully close to beating the teams that are currently first and fourth. Their loss last week to the Bulldogs was disappointing, but conditions on the night certainly didn't help. A return to a dry surface should see an improved performance from the home side. Note also the injury to Dylan Napa for the tricolours. He must have been on the verge of an Origin call-up this season and his absence evens up that forward contest. Potentially the game of the round in front of what should be a big crowd for a Thursday night.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos 32 defeated Roosters 8

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

We must give credit where it's due, and the Knights deserve some credit. But for one absolute blow-out they've been competitive week-in and week-out. Given the cattle they have at their disposal it's hard to ask for more than that. If the Bulldogs take this game lightly they'll come unstuck, but I'm leaping to the conclusion that Des will insist that they aren't in form until they are stringing wins together. Two is a string...for the Bulldogs at least.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Bulldogs 22 defeated Knights 12

Penrith Panthers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pepper Stadium

The Panthers were given a lesson in professionalism by the Melbourne Storm, then three of their players backed up that effort by breaking curfew and getting on the drink. So no Moylan, no Blake and no Hiku this weekend. They'll be sitting alongside the injured Peachey, Cartwright, and Fisher-Harris which leaves one of the most talented rosters in the competition light on for talent. Some young kids get a chance to step up in front of a home crowd. Some will handle it and some won't. There's enough doubts for me and I'm happy to tip the Bunnies in an upset.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result – Rabbitohs 21 defeated Panthers 20

Manly Sea Eagles vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

Not so long ago the Dragons couldn't score in a you-know-where, but right now they're top two and they've scored more points than every other team. How this transformation has occurred is anyone's guess but it's a delight to see. So too the Sea Eagles who looked destined for another ho-hum season. They've now won three on the trot and they're entertaining to boot. They're back at Lottoland and the last time they were here they flogged the Bulldogs 36-0. We'll have nothing like that scoreboard this weekend, but the Dragons are Dugan-less and his absence gives the home side a slight edge. With or without Dugan it's the game of the round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Dragons 35 defeated Sea Eagles 10

Gold Coast Titans vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

There's probably a way for the Raiders to lose this game, but there's at least a thousand ways they can win it. I'm happy to take $1.42. Good things.

Verdict – Raiders by 16

Result – Raiders 42 defeated Titans 16

North Queensland Cowboys vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

I can see Cleary now that Taylor's gone. A tough road trip for the new coach. The inury to Granville makes it a little easier but there was nothing in that Tigers attack last weekend that should worry the Cowboys too much. A tough road trip and a long quite flight home.

Verdict – Cowboys by 22

Result – Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 16

New Zealand Warriors vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

In the first two rounds the Eels beat the Sea Eagles and the Dragons, and all of sudden that looks like darn good form. Since then the Eels have been close to woeful. That said, they'll find this contest a lot easier than their last two outings against the Sharks and the Raiders. Given the players lining up for the Warriors on Sunday I can understand why they are a warm favourite on a Sunday at home, but goodess gracious you can't tip them with confidence. I'm leaning their way but barely so, because they've been awful and they fell over the line against an injury-depleted Titans last week. I'm assuming Foran will be better for the run last week, and his combinations with the rest of that Warriors spine should continue to improve. I'm not remotely confident, but the Eels have given me nothing to be confident about either. The home side...by default really.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result – Warriors 22 defeated Eels 10

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – AAMI Park

Call me a romantic old fool, but that was rather cute watching Cooper talking us through his decision to leave the Storm at the end of season 2017. My guess for where he ends up next season – the Dragons. I'm not sure how the Storm will respond to the news but they usually respond to just about everything by winning. I expect Cooper will feel some relief now that the decision is made and he'll be very keen indeed to do all he can to end his career in purple with another premiership. Clearly the Sharks can beat the Storm – they did exactly that in the 2016 grand final, but they've been to AAMI Park seven times previously and they're yet to find a win.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – SHarks 11 defeated Storm 2

Wally Lewis - round six selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BRONCOS vs Roosters
  • Knights vs BULLDOGS
  • PANTHERS vs Rabbitohs
  • SEA EAGLES vs Dragons
  • Titans vs RAIDERS
  • COWBOYS vs Tigers
  • WARRIORS vs Eels
  • STORM vs Sharks

Round 22 must be a long time

Baggy_Gee's picture

Bugger Tigerholic, Sorry for the apparent stealing of Moses, not sure if I want him as a BOY. Lets hope he can keep kicking on for your boys and proves that he's the real deal for any team by pulling hard for the rest of the year and then jumps the ship, not this whinge and leave because Clearly said "are you in or out?"

Baggy_Gee's picture

Is that all? They had some beer and relaxed, don't we now live in a overly PC world. Let them have a beer and bond, better way to do it than horse riding.

Coach Potato's picture

From what I knew, Cleary had a house built on the Penrith side of the river when he moved to Penrith, which is only a 5 minute walk.

They probably won't but would be very cool to see them strolling over to the ground. Nathan maybe tossing a footy to himself, Ivan maybe flicking through his clipboard to check all is in order.

mark ashford's picture

All joking aside I would think it would be very hard for a father to coach a team to beat a team in which your beloved son is playing.
Do we know of this has happened before?

mark ashford's picture

Meant "Do we know if this has happened before"

mark ashford's picture

Good to see you back having a say Christine

Coach Potato's picture

Good on Moylan, Blake and Hiku I reckon. Had a few quiet ones, and then a couple more. Not saying partying all the time is good for footy, but once in a bloody while is harmless.

They had enough sorrows to drown didn't they? What's more, there's nothing like sharing a beer for open and honest conversation.

I think more good comes out of this than anything.

New players who feel like they have been waiting to break into the Australian cricket team will be champing at the bit, and when the senior players come back, they'll be better. That's the theory anyway.

mark ashford's picture

Coach do you think suspending Matt Moylan (your captain) and a couple of others is a good move by "hook" when you are not going all that well.
This is a coaches suspension not an NRL sanction.
I know it's only round 6 but top players hate this sort of thing.
Could it backfire?

pabdul's picture

pretty sure john lang coached his son martin maybe at penrith and sharks

Fortress's picture

Yes I know Christine and thankyou and I have looked out for you OK have u got ur tips in.

Should be a huge crowd at brookie for the blockbuster can't wait,

Its good to see people talking footy and what a great weekend we have comming up.

Isn't great to see that pathetic matt chechin not refereeing how inept and out ifvtouch is he disgracefull .

christine's picture

My tips for rd 6 are :
broncos
bulldogs
panthers
manly
raiders
cowboys
warriors
storm
have a safe weekend everyone

Coach Potato's picture

When the playing group knows that the coach doesn't play favourites, that anyone can get in trouble and lose their spot, they will respect him doubly.

Let's not forget 2014 when Panthers had a whole starting lineup out injured and still made the prelim. Sure their depth will be tested, but I'd rather see how the 2nd stringers stack up now than late in the season jumping in the deep end. There's also the great opportunity for Cleary Jr to show some young leadership. No doubt he is a born leader. He wont have the (c) next to his name, but just watch him lead.

a's picture

Just remember this Soward got say as captain too

christine's picture

Mark No cronk next year for origin , that's a huge loss ...

Coach Potato's picture

Won't it be a strange thing having to be nice to one another when someone's team just lost, telling them to cheer up old sport, there's always next week and similar ...shite.

Try and trade barbs and you'll in the outhouse for it.

Players getting binned for just being themselves.
NRL forum page crashing due to passion getting too high. What a wonderful pear-shaped world.

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Getting late here over in Perth so I’d better get straight into it. These Thursday night games to start the week necessitate me posting to y’all on Wednesday nights and it’s starting to do my head in. Yeah, and it’s only Round 6 as well…

Roosters - This is gonna be tough for my BBB to win. Up at Suncorp, crowd behind the Broncos and the fact that we’ve lost the last 3 there. Both sides will want to redeem themselves after last week and I’m hoping we want it more. I’m sticking with my guys but I might “tempt fate” and back Brisbane (responsibly of course) to score first points for the 2nd week in a row. WA TAB has that particular play @ $1.90. Go you Mighty Roosters!

Knights - Gee whiz, poor ol’ Knights sunk last week by a field goal. Who would have thunk it? I’m liking how the Knights are having a crack this year. I watched the Doggies take care of the Broncos last week but Newbie’s thinking the wet conditions may have played a part in the end result somewhat. Then again I could be absolutely wrong. My head says Bulldogs but my gut is saying Knights. Ah bugger it, I’m going the Knights.

Panthers - Surprisingly (well for me at least) the Panthers didn’t seem to show up last week against the Storm. Everyone’s entitled to a bad week, especially against a class outfit. I can’t see Souths getting up here based on what I saw last weekend. Back home at Pepper will help enormously and another reason I’m going the Panthers.

Manly - To their credit, Manly have really turned things around and currently enjoying a nice run of form. Dragons aren’t doing too bad either. Considering who they’ve beaten in the last 3 weeks and the fact it’s at Brookie, I’ll jump on this Manly juggernaut. Well, for at least one week anyway. Manly for me.

Raiders - Can’t see this as anything else but a comfortable win for the Raiders. Viking Clappin’ Time!

Cowboys - To borrow from my in-depth summary of the previous game, I can’t see this as anything else but a comfortable win for the Cowboys. Saddle Slappin’ Time!

Warriors - Have the Warriors turned the corner? Will they be able to focus for the full 80 minutes? They did it the hard way last week (coming from behind) but the fact is they did it. Eels have now lost 3 on the trot. How will they respond? Is this the start of the end for them? What will they do Baggy? Not really that confident about either side but gotta pick someone so I’ll tip the Warriors. Peow! Peow!

Storm - Bring it on! Newbie’s gonna settle down on the lounge and watch this on GEM. Hopefully this will be a belter! Form-wise, the Storm Troopers should account for the Sharkies semi-comfortably. Stranger things have happened though. I’m thinking the AAMI/crowd advantage will help the Storm get up. Only thing I’m not looking forward to is having to sit and watch Bozo run around. Bozo as in “clown” as in “Gallen”. You know he was Dux at Clown College didn’t you?

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.

P.S. Could someone ever get addicted to counselling? If so, how could you treat them? Hmmm…

Rocket Ryan's picture

People showing a lot of faith in the panthers undeserved for mine early bullshit about a premiership year has been diagnosed as dynamite dreaming dont let pototo brain and fittler fool us any more than they already have if they cant get off the grog the top eight will not happen even .

Coach Potato's picture

Mr Rocket Ryan
I ask you to stop attacking me and my team with those inappropriate comments.

pabdul's picture

spot on rocket.
with Nathan clearasil cleary and tia maria martin steering the ship its a lost cause. when did an inexperienced halves pair last win the comp..it aint potato science

Rocket Ryan's picture

Coach my cleary jnr to tigers theory gains momentum and he will not be alone.

christine's picture

Now I just need to hope adam Reynolds breaks his leg so he can't kick .

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Broncos by 6- Both teams will be looking to get back to form. I think that it'll be the Broncos here beating the Rooters in a close one.

Bulldogs by 8- Bulldogs will be too good for the Knights here.

Rabbitohs by 4- Moylan, Hiku, Whare out will effect the Panthers a lot here. Rabbitohs in a close one.

The mighty Dragons by 2- Yes, we've got Dugan out. Nightingale replaces him at fullback, Mann on the wing, Aitken back in the centres and Hame Sele in on the bench to make his debut in place of Jacob Host whose been demoted back to the reserves. On paper, we've still got the team to beat the inform Manly. Both teams confidence are sky high. Confidence plays a huge role in this one. Whose confidence will prevail? I think that the mighty Dragons' confidence will prevail in a thrilling game of football.

Raiders by 14- Raiders too good for the Titans here.

Cowboys by 16- Cowboys to win big over the Tigers here.

Warriors by 2- Warriors to just beat the Eels here which'll mean that the Eels will lose 4 straight.

And finally... the Storm by 10- Storm to remain undefeated here with a win over the Sharks here.

Awesome. Good luck with everyone's teams this week and for everyone's tips this week. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oops, I saved my comment 4 times. Haha

Doggie's picture

Thanks for clearing that up Christine. I hadnt taken any notice until it was Dogs turn to play there. BTW hoping a player breaks his leg seems a bit harsh just for 1 point in a tipping comp. Take care.

Islander's picture

I think Whare is playing, Blake is out.

The Thinker's picture

Mark Ashford,

Regarding the father and son question. If it's happened before it was a long time ago.

Martin Lang, son of Johnny Lang, played 176 games in the NRL and his Dad was his coach in every single game.

That was hard enough, particularly because of the way Martin played (didn't have much of a sidestep), and his father knew what he was sending his son out to do.  Knocked out ten times he was, with his Dad watching on the sidelines every single time.

Tough gig.

pabdul's picture

thanks thinker i mentioned that about 50 posts ago but when i say it for some reason it just gets ignored. when a new player comes in u have to pass the ball to him eventually.

The Thinker's picture

Thanks pabdul....I was just adding a little more colour. Mark wants to know if a coach has coached against his son, and Johnny Lang didn't. Someone probably did, but I can't think of anyone. If someone knows somebody feel free to let us know.

Keep contributing. Your comments aren't ignored.

pabdul's picture

ive never done this posting comments thing before. im used to talking footy down the pub and if your ignored or disagree...well thats why god made carparks.

The Thinker's picture

That's what they're for? I thought God made carparks so Greg Bird could always find a toilet.

pabdul's picture

good call... thats about as funny as why all the prostitutes in canberra are going out of business ... all
their clients have contracted the viking clap.

The Thinker's picture

Those vikings lived a colourful life.

Unrelated – but I've been down in northern NSW (or Inglisville as Coach likes to call it) and I bumped into one of the Lang Park statues. Mr Darren Lockyer.

I was a bit surprised, because I assume he's working at the Broncos v Roosters game tonight. Let's hope he gets a better run on the M1 than I did.

christine's picture

Doggie I know it was a bit harsh of me to wish adam Reynolds to break his leg seeing I was a souths supporter in 2014 but that's the reason I say so , i'm not following any particular team this year i'm a free agent so to speak & if you don't want anyone to bring their kicking game with them it's adam Reynolds that's what he does at training he just spends the whole time kicking goals & I went with panthers this week so I hope adam Reynolds breaks his leg or does a hamstring at least would be nice .

christine's picture

Alright i'm changing my tip now to souths from Penrith so adam Reynolds you better not break your leg or do a hamstring :so my tips for rd 6 are :
broncos
bulldogs
manly
souths
warriors
raiders
storm
cowboys

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Thinker.
I remember Martin Lang and those suicidal runs of his.
You can just imagine his dad saying "one step Martin, just one step. Don't care if it's left or right...just one step"
Had the pleasure of meeting Martin some years ago when he had set up a personal trainer business on the Gold Coast.
He was a lovely bloke and those "hits" didn't seem to have taken too much of a toll.

mark ashford's picture

Mr Coach Potato,
I think your inappropriate comment about Mr Rocket Ryans inappropriate comment is totally inappropriate.
Isn't it nice we are all being so nice.
Do you think it will last?

tigerholic's picture

I have never seen Coachy Boy sooo quiet, Coach are you OK.

Coach Potato's picture

christine, did you just you hope Adam Reynolds breaks Nathan Cleary's leg?

Thinker, are you sure this the poor victim?

mark ashford's picture

Don't worry about Coach Tiger he will come back bigger and better.
Beware the wounded Coach

mark ashford's picture

Coach it was his own leg...but I guess If Nathan gets his leg in the way who knows what will happen.

christine's picture

No coach I originally tipped panthers over souths & I know from being a former souths member adam Reynolds spends his whole time training on just kicking goals & he's good at it so I wished him to break his leg so Penrith will win & after speaking with someone I know they've got in my head to change my tip because Penrith have 6 players out so I changed my tip to souths which believe me coach means Penrith will win because that's my luck right now what ever I do or say the opposite happens so no the only person I wished to break their leg is adam Reynolds because I don't really rate souths this year anyway .

Coach Potato's picture

oh yeah you're right Mark.
christine said she hoped Adam Reynolds has his leg broken.
So much better .. (I think not).

Islander's picture

I hear you Coach!

mark ashford's picture

C'mon Coach no one really wants to see a player hurt badly it was just a figure of speech.
How do you see the Broncos/Roosters game evolving tonight?
Being a Broncs tragic I am a bit worried about how they are going.
2 from 5 is not a good start. The wins were by a point or two.
At home they need to beat the Roosters by a good margin.
Any comment?

christine's picture

Coach leave me alone the thinker said keep it football related & I am but you are trying to provoke me yet again.
