Round six selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Roosters may be perched in the upper reaches of the competition ladder, but when one looks at who they've played this season one starts to second guess them a little. They've played just one other team that's going well (the Sea Eagles) and they lost. The only other team they've played in the top eight is Penrith – now Penrith are barely in the top eight and the Chooks were pretty lucky to beat them. Meanwhile the Broncos have beaten the teams that are currently fifth and sixth and went painfully close to beating the teams that are currently first and fourth. Their loss last week to the Bulldogs was disappointing, but conditions on the night certainly didn't help. A return to a dry surface should see an improved performance from the home side. Note also the injury to Dylan Napa for the tricolours. He must have been on the verge of an Origin call-up this season and his absence evens up that forward contest. Potentially the game of the round in front of what should be a big crowd for a Thursday night.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos 32 defeated Roosters 8

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

We must give credit where it's due, and the Knights deserve some credit. But for one absolute blow-out they've been competitive week-in and week-out. Given the cattle they have at their disposal it's hard to ask for more than that. If the Bulldogs take this game lightly they'll come unstuck, but I'm leaping to the conclusion that Des will insist that they aren't in form until they are stringing wins together. Two is a string...for the Bulldogs at least.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Bulldogs 22 defeated Knights 12

Penrith Panthers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pepper Stadium

The Panthers were given a lesson in professionalism by the Melbourne Storm, then three of their players backed up that effort by breaking curfew and getting on the drink. So no Moylan, no Blake and no Hiku this weekend. They'll be sitting alongside the injured Peachey, Cartwright, and Fisher-Harris which leaves one of the most talented rosters in the competition light on for talent. Some young kids get a chance to step up in front of a home crowd. Some will handle it and some won't. There's enough doubts for me and I'm happy to tip the Bunnies in an upset.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result – Rabbitohs 21 defeated Panthers 20

Manly Sea Eagles vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

Not so long ago the Dragons couldn't score in a you-know-where, but right now they're top two and they've scored more points than every other team. How this transformation has occurred is anyone's guess but it's a delight to see. So too the Sea Eagles who looked destined for another ho-hum season. They've now won three on the trot and they're entertaining to boot. They're back at Lottoland and the last time they were here they flogged the Bulldogs 36-0. We'll have nothing like that scoreboard this weekend, but the Dragons are Dugan-less and his absence gives the home side a slight edge. With or without Dugan it's the game of the round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Dragons 35 defeated Sea Eagles 10

Gold Coast Titans vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

There's probably a way for the Raiders to lose this game, but there's at least a thousand ways they can win it. I'm happy to take $1.42. Good things.

Verdict – Raiders by 16

Result – Raiders 42 defeated Titans 16

North Queensland Cowboys vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

I can see Cleary now that Taylor's gone. A tough road trip for the new coach. The inury to Granville makes it a little easier but there was nothing in that Tigers attack last weekend that should worry the Cowboys too much. A tough road trip and a long quite flight home.

Verdict – Cowboys by 22

Result – Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 16

New Zealand Warriors vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

In the first two rounds the Eels beat the Sea Eagles and the Dragons, and all of sudden that looks like darn good form. Since then the Eels have been close to woeful. That said, they'll find this contest a lot easier than their last two outings against the Sharks and the Raiders. Given the players lining up for the Warriors on Sunday I can understand why they are a warm favourite on a Sunday at home, but goodess gracious you can't tip them with confidence. I'm leaning their way but barely so, because they've been awful and they fell over the line against an injury-depleted Titans last week. I'm assuming Foran will be better for the run last week, and his combinations with the rest of that Warriors spine should continue to improve. I'm not remotely confident, but the Eels have given me nothing to be confident about either. The home side...by default really.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result – Warriors 22 defeated Eels 10

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – AAMI Park

Call me a romantic old fool, but that was rather cute watching Cooper talking us through his decision to leave the Storm at the end of season 2017. My guess for where he ends up next season – the Dragons. I'm not sure how the Storm will respond to the news but they usually respond to just about everything by winning. I expect Cooper will feel some relief now that the decision is made and he'll be very keen indeed to do all he can to end his career in purple with another premiership. Clearly the Sharks can beat the Storm – they did exactly that in the 2016 grand final, but they've been to AAMI Park seven times previously and they're yet to find a win.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – SHarks 11 defeated Storm 2

I go no where near LottoLand, I'll leave you, the Beagles and the rats to enjoy the food there. Look forward to round 17 where your losing streak will extend where you even manage to lose to the bye. Bet DCE chucks a sook when he stuffs up as bad as he did on Saturday and a invisible person steals his ball.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I said nothing about your race, species on the other hand............................ No DCE was pushing Nightingale, what game were you watching? Or do all Manly supporters turn their back the moment their team runs onto the field? The sparrows up the top of lottoland might have provided a better spectacle than that game.

Christine 's picture

mark ashford's picture

Hi Chris,
yeah Coach has gone on a holiday but the feeling in still there.
I think I also got 5/8 so not a good round for me.
Sharkies very physical against Storm and got the win.
Sharks are becoming the dirtiest players in the comp.
Fiffita, Maloney and Gallen leading the charge.
Just watched the game and many head highs, strips, offsides etc let go by the refs. Looked to me that there was an agenda to ensure a Sharks win.

Fortress's picture

Big Pete don't worry we will beat the storm next week at home.

Cheers everyone!!!!!!!!

a's picture

Looks like THL may have to shut down the comments since it felt like where on Home and Away site and not Footy

Rocket Ryan's picture

How you traveling Big Pete nice time of the year up here in I'm kicking back having a few beers and a giggle as fortress gives baggy a spray i know to keep out of his way when he fires up

You have to enjoy it no harm done baggy pants likes to poke the possum so to speak.

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening Fortress - gee mate u certainly got into it there.
Thanks for the reassurance for next week. Next week Storm at home, then Raiders away, then Carrot Eaters (Bunnies) away then Broncos at Brooky in Rd 10.
Looks like a few games to sharpen up with.

Question in my last email unanswered, but if you still have it, reply to me and I'll know it works.

Keep well all and have a nice week.
Big Pete

a's picture

Actually Broncos play Manly at Suncorp

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes "a", Fortress gave it just as we know from the past, any wise cracks at North of The Harbour and he'll be in like a T-Rex.
Hope all is ok up Nth Qld mate and that u r all getting somewhere with what the devastation caused.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks for the update on that "a".
Is that one of the games that becomes a double header and we make a few $$$'s on from NRL and QRL for taking our home game to Brizzy?
Keep well - Big Pete

a's picture

Yes Brisbane will give Manly a bit of money and yes everything is
Okay in the NQ

Thanks BigPete

BigPeteBx's picture

U r certainly right there Rocket.

Yes Rocket, Drags got into it from word go and Manly was playing catchup footy all arvo. Not the team I know. I hope they weren't backing themselves on Sportsbet.

Stuff a Nth Qld Goanna - Fortress ripped back into Baggy G with the remark he made about his Under 8 side v's NRL MWSE. There are a couple that like to test the waters and have a niggle. That certainly happened in this case.
What r u enjoying in the liquids mate?
R u a XXXX man as I think Mark A likes a XXXX (brew or two) and then into the reds (wine)?

BigPeteBx's picture

Hang in there "a" as we think of all people in situations of hardship and devastation.
Yes, like the charities I give to as well, that need it and keep it flowing in Australia, because they get no bloody assistance from govt's and that is why they do the ring around and post out so much mail to try and obtain donations.
Australian Govt's under their so called obligations, have to and keep giving to United Nations "events". So much goes offshore, there are more times I could see the money better used within our continent or to secure our Homeland, National Shores/Security and the Homeless.

Christine 's picture

Mark I noticed he's disappeared but apparently the spirit lives on don't quite know what set this one off but hey thinker I'm staying out of it so don't look at me , who would of thought cowboys would loose to tigers & storm would loose to sharks in Melbourne but I will say feki Is a good player but yes some of there players do play dirty & it wasn't just ennis , I wonder how long jet will be out for poor "a" has a nervous wait ...

Christine 's picture

I meant jt not Jimmy jet I hate predictive text ...

Fortress's picture

Big pete and rocket its no secret I don't like baggy pants he doesn't follow the footy and his comments follow suit his mob of tripe lost today so hevtrys to hide behind that and has a go a others well tough titties baggy pants.

Yes big Pete I will give u my new e_mail address OK the other one not working how do I send it to to you buddy.

Enjoy the drinks rocket man any hottie's with you heard there are some great sorts up north you should come to manly beach in the summer you would go blind mate.

Cheers from the fortress eagle!!!!!!!!!!!

BigPeteBx's picture

Hahahaha 'a' - far from what we know as The Sullivans, Some Mothers Do av Em or MASH, mate. Maybe The Vicar of Dibley may need to rule on this.

Fortress's picture

How do I send you my e-mail big Pete thanx buddy.

Christine 's picture

Big Pete bx I was a volunteer for seven years with saint Vincent de Paul before I got injured with a protruding disc in my back which was just prior to getting ms & I can tell you for a fact vinnies ask for & get a $9million grant every year from the government salvos don't the don't ask for it & they don't want it so I only give to the salvos or donate to them not vinnies because everything that Vinnie's sell is profit they only pay wages for a very few they treat you like garbage when you volunteer for them they don't pay for electricity they don't pay tax so take it from me I now boycott vinnies evety chance I get...

Christine 's picture

That was suppose to say every chance I get ...

BigPeteBx's picture

Fortress - send it to me via Thinker. He does discreet emails for and on behalf of tippers. Just inform him that the previous one that he sent me with your approval - stuffed up.

We were at The Corso just on three years ago and Sydney has TALENT in capitals written all over it. We were there for The Vivid Festival around the harbour on a pre-booked dinner cruise.
Was recently down there last year for Julio Iglesias Concert and usually stay near Haymarket area, as it is easy walk to all CBD areas/sites and Country Trains platforms.

Keep well and have nice week although my tomorrow would be better thought of. Into Eye Clinic for an op - torn retina and floaters.
Need to get it fixed, so I can watch the footy and EPL Footy and what comes with all that, along with the workplace and doing my job.

Christine 's picture

The boss I had at vinnies was Carmen Graham former wife of Mark Graham who hasn't got anything good to say about him...

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans

I've updated the tipping comp and the NRL ladder. Congrats to our top scorers for this round – Dragons Fanboy and Johnny Awesome with six from eight. Scott M maintains his lead in the tipping comp and the mighty Dragons sit on top of the NRL ladder. Wow.

I'll have the round seven page published by Monday night for those that need to tip early, and I'll have my previews and tips published by Wednesday afternoon.

All the best

a's picture

Yeah I hope JT isn't out for too long It it's not good when your wife doesn't have any respect for you

a's picture

Thinker looks like another fight on your site you might have to talk to them again

BigPeteBx's picture

Tell me Christine and nice to know that you also do volunteer work, or did.
Mark Graham, is he the one who once played top grade rugby league?

As for grants, I guess there are charities that really cry out for it (grants) and get it. Many do it by donations. Vinnies often had me wondering being a satellite of Catholic Church denomination.
Lately, I think of animals and have Taronga Zoo on my list with Guide Dogs, RSPCA.....not so sure about WWF, as much goes to assist the species that are becoming extinct, and that means money abroad to assist others.

The way it is in this Country, the male species is being extinct, as women are outliving men. Keep well Christine and try have a good week.

a's picture

Well I also work at the charity Endeavour

BigPeteBx's picture

They will lay at rest 'a'.
Fortress isn't repetitive until the lid gets lifted again.
He's a true blue and as we know, ANZAC Day as fast approaching.
I could stand Baggy G next to Fortress at Martin Place Cenotaph and they'd have their arms around each other.

That's how true this site really is, until the shit stirrers stop stirring and get down the football facts. But.........each to their own I guess.
Mark A knows, because he had a couple of scenarios develop and threatened to drive south and poke someone on the nose.
For a moment there, I thought Smokin Joe and Ali were warming up for a rematch.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Fortress for indicating your grass roots.
I look forward to some kava with you.
Is that Maori kiwi or like us whiteys mate?
We have a group of athletes got to Bay of Plenty every year from our Western Region Academy of Sport.

Who you signing to head back across the ditch to join the Brooky Clan next.
Mark Broadhurst would be proud of your stand today.

BigPeteBx's picture

Heifer dust Johnny Ray.
U r presently three points behind me and the comp isn't even half over yet. Long way to go Old Son.

You stay here with us and continue being JR (not Ewing).
Keep well mate - Big Pete Bx

a's picture

Yeah please comment JR I miss you

christine's picture

Big pete bx Yes mark graham the one & only mark graham who according to his former wife has a child in several different countries where ever he has been so it's no wonder she's a bit filthy on him when she has two kids with him ...

christine's picture

Johnny ray please come back you make me laugh when coach just makes me cry we need you johnny ray ...

a's picture

Yeah Come back JR you better than Coach

christine's picture

big pete bx i'm not religious at all & you don't have to be to volunteer at vinnies but I know what I saw in the time that I worked there & they are so crooked it isn't funny that $9million grant they get & ask for every year is supposed to be redistributed amongst the community & it isn't , the shop I was working at when I was there was doing $12000.00 a week in sales & they don't pay for anything not electricity not tax nothing at all it all gets pocketed & they work you hard to because they don't have to pay you ,they just take blatant advantage of you & after seven years of it so that was seven years that I didn't get paid a cent at all I finally gave it away & to add to it they don't even give there volunteers a Christmas party you have to supply food for them to have one when your a volunteer now enough about that better get back to the nrl talk or we will p*#s someone off ...

christine's picture

Big pete bx I would donate to animals & wild life any day over vinnies .

christine's picture

Big pete bx I can tell you that someone with ms lives seven years less than the average life span of someone that doesn't have ms , don't ask me why but I put it down to the scaring it gives you on your brain ...

christine's picture

Mark This is typical of coach going into hiding because his team lost but I know as well as you mark & ''a'' & everyone else coach is lingering around somewhere mark my words he is probably reading every comment that gets posted it would just be killing him to not be on here posting comments so coach read this your silence is deafening but I can still hear you scream ...

Fortress's picture

OK big Pete will do mate,as far as my heritage is Maori mate as far as players comming from over the ditch we have had some great talent Ridgy didge, iro brothers,Craig innes, just to name a few yes Trent could have a look.

Hope ur eye test goes well mate keep smiling mate.

Cheers from the fortress!!!!!!!!

tigerholic's picture

Hey Big Pete, the seaegles played like sparrows, what happened to them from last week where they looked like a genuine premiership challengers. Don't suppose you witnessed one of the upsets of the century in the Tigers mauling the cowboys at home, one of the best wins for my under siege club.

I think Rocket's favourite drink is best sipped out of a saucer.

Have a good week

tigerholic's picture

Coach, where are you old boy, get your arse back on this site and throw some dirt at someone, throw it at me for gods sake just get back in the saddle.

Tailspin's picture

C"mon Coach, come back and play, I miss the banter. Geez people, lighten up a bit. It's just a bit of fun and games. Yes it is a footy site and yes people love their teams and hate others and love some players and hate others. WHO BLOODY CARES, I thought the idea was if you made a comment, you want people to see it and hopefully reply, or not. If you don't like the reply, then have a go back or don't reply to that reply, its that simple. If you take the reply to heart and want to go have a cry about it, then go get a box of tissues and walk outside and have a cry. Don't sit on the site and cry about it. Any good information and or stats are awesome, keep it coming. Love the site Thinker and Little helper, keep up the good work, Anyway, back to the footy, Bloody Cowboys, WTF, they played like they were on the piss the night before, very uncharacteristic of them, I know they have a lot of new talent coming through but they were terrible, even JT had a shocker. But congratulations all the Tigers fans and tippers. Good to see the Storm get knocked off their perch, I reckon it would have been a different story if it was dry conditions though. And how good are the Dragons and Warriors going now, playing some good footy. And Souths were very lucky to get the win over a very depleted Panthers side, hmmmmm, doesn't look good for them playing a full strength side does it? Any how, my tips are going up the blurter, but there is room for some improvement, hopefully. Cheers everyone. Hope you all have a good week.

a's picture

Tailspin I hope JT doesn't miss too many games

While people want Coach to come back I want Johnny Ray back come on bring back Johnny Ray we need Johnny Ray he makes me laugh while Coach just makes people leave bring back Johnny Ray
