Round six selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Roosters may be perched in the upper reaches of the competition ladder, but when one looks at who they've played this season one starts to second guess them a little. They've played just one other team that's going well (the Sea Eagles) and they lost. The only other team they've played in the top eight is Penrith – now Penrith are barely in the top eight and the Chooks were pretty lucky to beat them. Meanwhile the Broncos have beaten the teams that are currently fifth and sixth and went painfully close to beating the teams that are currently first and fourth. Their loss last week to the Bulldogs was disappointing, but conditions on the night certainly didn't help. A return to a dry surface should see an improved performance from the home side. Note also the injury to Dylan Napa for the tricolours. He must have been on the verge of an Origin call-up this season and his absence evens up that forward contest. Potentially the game of the round in front of what should be a big crowd for a Thursday night.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos 32 defeated Roosters 8

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

We must give credit where it's due, and the Knights deserve some credit. But for one absolute blow-out they've been competitive week-in and week-out. Given the cattle they have at their disposal it's hard to ask for more than that. If the Bulldogs take this game lightly they'll come unstuck, but I'm leaping to the conclusion that Des will insist that they aren't in form until they are stringing wins together. Two is a string...for the Bulldogs at least.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Bulldogs 22 defeated Knights 12

Penrith Panthers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pepper Stadium

The Panthers were given a lesson in professionalism by the Melbourne Storm, then three of their players backed up that effort by breaking curfew and getting on the drink. So no Moylan, no Blake and no Hiku this weekend. They'll be sitting alongside the injured Peachey, Cartwright, and Fisher-Harris which leaves one of the most talented rosters in the competition light on for talent. Some young kids get a chance to step up in front of a home crowd. Some will handle it and some won't. There's enough doubts for me and I'm happy to tip the Bunnies in an upset.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result – Rabbitohs 21 defeated Panthers 20

Manly Sea Eagles vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

Not so long ago the Dragons couldn't score in a you-know-where, but right now they're top two and they've scored more points than every other team. How this transformation has occurred is anyone's guess but it's a delight to see. So too the Sea Eagles who looked destined for another ho-hum season. They've now won three on the trot and they're entertaining to boot. They're back at Lottoland and the last time they were here they flogged the Bulldogs 36-0. We'll have nothing like that scoreboard this weekend, but the Dragons are Dugan-less and his absence gives the home side a slight edge. With or without Dugan it's the game of the round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Dragons 35 defeated Sea Eagles 10

Gold Coast Titans vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

There's probably a way for the Raiders to lose this game, but there's at least a thousand ways they can win it. I'm happy to take $1.42. Good things.

Verdict – Raiders by 16

Result – Raiders 42 defeated Titans 16

North Queensland Cowboys vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

I can see Cleary now that Taylor's gone. A tough road trip for the new coach. The inury to Granville makes it a little easier but there was nothing in that Tigers attack last weekend that should worry the Cowboys too much. A tough road trip and a long quite flight home.

Verdict – Cowboys by 22

Result – Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 16

New Zealand Warriors vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

In the first two rounds the Eels beat the Sea Eagles and the Dragons, and all of sudden that looks like darn good form. Since then the Eels have been close to woeful. That said, they'll find this contest a lot easier than their last two outings against the Sharks and the Raiders. Given the players lining up for the Warriors on Sunday I can understand why they are a warm favourite on a Sunday at home, but goodess gracious you can't tip them with confidence. I'm leaning their way but barely so, because they've been awful and they fell over the line against an injury-depleted Titans last week. I'm assuming Foran will be better for the run last week, and his combinations with the rest of that Warriors spine should continue to improve. I'm not remotely confident, but the Eels have given me nothing to be confident about either. The home side...by default really.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result – Warriors 22 defeated Eels 10

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – AAMI Park

Call me a romantic old fool, but that was rather cute watching Cooper talking us through his decision to leave the Storm at the end of season 2017. My guess for where he ends up next season – the Dragons. I'm not sure how the Storm will respond to the news but they usually respond to just about everything by winning. I expect Cooper will feel some relief now that the decision is made and he'll be very keen indeed to do all he can to end his career in purple with another premiership. Clearly the Sharks can beat the Storm – they did exactly that in the 2016 grand final, but they've been to AAMI Park seven times previously and they're yet to find a win.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – SHarks 11 defeated Storm 2

Wally Lewis - round six selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BRONCOS vs Roosters
  • Knights vs BULLDOGS
  • PANTHERS vs Rabbitohs
  • SEA EAGLES vs Dragons
  • Titans vs RAIDERS

Easy folks.

I'm gonna try not saying anything at all.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Tigers would appear to be in almost as much mess as Parra last year in terms of disarray Cleary has a huge job to do but he is only the face the real carnage lies behind the scenes can't find anyone who thinks they are a chance talk about gamble responsibility how can you.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Bit of support from the tipsters for the knights i think they can win this one and have backed them.

pabdul's picture

thinker at norths watching the game florimo reckons it hasn't happened in nrl but in the 6 nations andy Farrell ex wigan was ass coach for ireland when his son was playing for england

a's picture

Yeah I think Knights can win tonight

pabdul's picture

also i think locky new the game in mackville would be closer. now we know why carparks exist lets not go into hotel stairwells

pabdul's picture

pretty sure cronk will be in a foxsports blazer next year staying a 1 club player. but who will replace him at the storm...im hearing Kieran foran.

christine's picture

Rocket ryan you can get even with coach all you like when panthers head south but I still have the right to defend myself & if you look at what he says then you'll see he has done this to me ever since he's been on this site so it's not bs but the fact that you & others don't see it is bs .

christine's picture

Just saw a tweet that cronk has inked a two yr deal with fox sport .

pabdul's picture

your spot on christine. i dont know what a tweet is but heard it from peter osullivan who was a former recruitment mgr at the storm

Good win to the Broncos, not even someone who hates them can agree with their form last night, Roosters were woeful!!!

Come on the bulldogs and Rabbits, of course the Tigers but that is a not a secret that a hiding is coming our way tomorrow night.

Glad to see we are back onto footy chat, enjoy the footy folks.

What really is the point to a player signing a contract these days, it's not like it's binding they're just letting do what they want.

Christine 's picture

I meant there just letting players do want they want so why sign a contract in the first place with a club if the club isn't doing any good you just go to another club

Johnny Awesome's picture

Not quite Christine but you are close. Remember the Superleague fiasco? The players were contracted but walked away from the ARL. It's all about money, where is the ethics these days? Can't use loyalty because when it comes to that the clubs are just as bad if not worse cheers from Mr Awesome

Johnny Awesome's picture

Mr Coach Potato are you on some different mess these days? Cheers from Mr Awesome

Johnny Awesome's picture

Sorry meant meds fairdinkum this spell check on these phones

Johnny Awesome's picture

Mr Coach Potato you are a bit of a stats man. The NRL has three first grade coaches being ex Dragons players that played together. What'sa reckon, has that been replicated before? Cheers Mr Awesome

christine's picture

Johnny Awsome that actually was my point they are just chasing money & they get paid ridiculous amounts already there is no loyalty that's all gone out the window what about when the players had to have a real job outside of playing league these guys give up playing league & get a job with fox sport not criticising cronk for that he was always going to but hindmarsh, ennis, fletcher johns it's becoming a joke go & get paid what any other person would & see how they like it then ...

Johnny Awesome's picture

Many valid comments indeed Christine and yes they get paid well. Even the lowest fringe player these days gets around 80k. But on saying that, they have a skill we don't have, the public wants sport... I know I do, so there is a demand for it. It's a competive sport, probably even more so now because of its professionalism. So if someone is willing to pay what they then do be it. I totally agree about reneging on contracts and some of them know how to grab more money than a roomful of lawyers. But guess what it boils down to the contract really, clubs are scared of putting in the tight clauses because they want the player. So Christine as long as we get to see good footy then the rest takes care of itself. Cheers from Mr Awesome

Evenin Mark,
Yes, may the best team win I also say, BUT..............there are times in this league of NRL, that the refs aren't up with it.
Hell, bring back Harrigan, or the one that is to be his successor.
I didn't mind Bill and he was a sole, fittest of the fit ref.
It really p's me off when decisions go to The Bunker, because sure as shit, one of them will see it differently.....who and at what angle, who knows if a KFC chicken leg is in the box, for them as an appetiser.

BigPeteBx's picture

In most respects Footy Chick, that is a good sign that The Thinker site is being reviewed and read. However, in many way, it is also a timely reminder that some of out posts should be a bit more politely written.
Then again, I know some friends that read the site and like it, because of the verbal fisticuffs that goes on.
Keep well !!!!!!!

BigPeteBx's picture

Tell you what Pabdul - u r going rather well with posting comments, even if you say you've never done it before. Carparks be buggered, they just king-hit you these days. Its called aggression and alcohol fuelled.

BigPeteBx's picture

Howdy Fortress - yes mate, I am here on site, in patches.
Our cool weather is starting to show up.

Broncos are backable at home- never fear. I picked them in the wet last week, but should have checked the weather update.
I am on the Sea Eagles with a margin of 4 against Draggo's. But, if we get a lead up, we might just do whats happened the past two games. That mean points for, will look more attractive.

BigPeteBx's picture

Now you Thinkers and before I head off to get a bite and watch tonight's game.
Christine - just ignore the stuff that puts you off beam. I do and I don't reply to it.

So write this one down, it was quoted by Vince Lombardi, the American NFL Legend. "Its not whether you get knocked down, Its whether you get up".
Cheers folks and try and be nice to each other and have a great weekend.
Big Pete

Alright. That's me out ! Six weeks I've been trying to tip upset and every week, every upset I pick goes to front early in game and then goes onto lose. Broncos V Storm, Tigers V Storm, Titans V Warriors and now Knights V Bulldogs. Not one of them has managed to hold on to win and those are only the ones that hurt most. Me I am done because instead of being 6 or 8 in front like I had hoped, I am instead 6 or 8 behind with little to no chance of catching up at all. It's all got away from me. That's why I'm done. That and just have had enough of it on here especially with Coach and all crap he's been saying and way he's been treating certain people on here like Christine. Me I am out of here ! Good luck everybody with rest of year ! Thanks again Thinker. Thanks again Thinker's Little Helper. Later guys. Goodbye ! ;-D

Baggy_Gee's picture

OK till next season JR. hope your tipping improves if your in other comps. Hang loose.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Hoping your at the ground Coach. Looks like a full house and a good energy there.

mark ashford's picture

Coach you must have had a couple of good wins on the punt lately and flicked it on to the refs retirement fund.
getting a fair bit of help tonight.

Baggy_Gee's picture

How did Sutton stuff that up? Good defence from the Cats.

Evenin’ all. Would’ve been on a lot sooner but had to wait until my anti-depressants wore off from last night. Then I had to head on down to the local GP to get some more just in case. Tigerholic hit the nail on the head when he said:

“The Roosters were woeful!”

Dude, I just sat there watching ‘em and sometimes cried and other times cursed. I still have no idea what they were doing. Or should I say what they weren’t doing! Heartbreaking stuff but hey, that’s life and we all know this wonderful game can slap you back down to earth when you least expect it, whether you’re a player or a fan.

Well done to the Broncos though. Simply too good for us. More switched on and a hell of a lot classier I must admit. As Mark said: “the best team won.” Now that I’ve had time to ponder last night’s demolition, I’d have to agree with Rocket and begrudgingly consider that we were indeed lucky to have played and beaten certain sides that hadn’t shown what the Manly boys and the Broncos had shown. I think I’ll have to cop that loss and I’m sure my BBB will have to as well. I’m hopin’ and prayin’ that it might wake them up. I’m also hopin’ and prayin’ that we can win at least 3 out of the next 4 games. No offence to the supporters of the Knights, Dragons, Warriors and the Eels but if we could rack up 3 wins from those 4 games then we’d have a happy Newbie indeed.

OK gotta peel out as Souths just scored a quick try just after the restart and I wanna settle down on the couch and watch the last 20 mins or so of tonight’s game. Before I do though, I just wanna shout out to JR. Dude, I have an idea…

Forget the tipping and just get on and get us smiling and laughing with that humorous rhetoric (and video links) of yours. Sort of like a “guest blogger”. I’m sure you’re up to it mate. Give it some thought eh?

Thanks guys, catch y’all next time. Cheers.

mark ashford's picture

Coach I take back what I said earlier.
That was a great game of football, enjoyed every minute.
A field goal beat your Panthers.
But I did pick the Rabbits so I should be happy....and I am.

mark ashford's picture

Newbie, don't write your Roosters off yet.
The Broncs were due a big win and they did it.
A Broncs/Roosters GF would be good to see.
Keep those funnies coming mate I love them.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Panthers claiming an honorable loss but the problem with that is they settle for it had enough possession to win the game and failed coach potato will try to apply some spin but the rabbits made them look good they were woeful.

christine's picture

That's how I get even ...

pabdul's picture

the panthers rely on Moylan and peachey in attack. without them their young halves decision making was exposed. Reynolds got it right 90% of the time cleary about 50.
