Round six selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Roosters may be perched in the upper reaches of the competition ladder, but when one looks at who they've played this season one starts to second guess them a little. They've played just one other team that's going well (the Sea Eagles) and they lost. The only other team they've played in the top eight is Penrith – now Penrith are barely in the top eight and the Chooks were pretty lucky to beat them. Meanwhile the Broncos have beaten the teams that are currently fifth and sixth and went painfully close to beating the teams that are currently first and fourth. Their loss last week to the Bulldogs was disappointing, but conditions on the night certainly didn't help. A return to a dry surface should see an improved performance from the home side. Note also the injury to Dylan Napa for the tricolours. He must have been on the verge of an Origin call-up this season and his absence evens up that forward contest. Potentially the game of the round in front of what should be a big crowd for a Thursday night.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos 32 defeated Roosters 8

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

We must give credit where it's due, and the Knights deserve some credit. But for one absolute blow-out they've been competitive week-in and week-out. Given the cattle they have at their disposal it's hard to ask for more than that. If the Bulldogs take this game lightly they'll come unstuck, but I'm leaping to the conclusion that Des will insist that they aren't in form until they are stringing wins together. Two is a string...for the Bulldogs at least.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Bulldogs 22 defeated Knights 12

Penrith Panthers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pepper Stadium

The Panthers were given a lesson in professionalism by the Melbourne Storm, then three of their players backed up that effort by breaking curfew and getting on the drink. So no Moylan, no Blake and no Hiku this weekend. They'll be sitting alongside the injured Peachey, Cartwright, and Fisher-Harris which leaves one of the most talented rosters in the competition light on for talent. Some young kids get a chance to step up in front of a home crowd. Some will handle it and some won't. There's enough doubts for me and I'm happy to tip the Bunnies in an upset.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result – Rabbitohs 21 defeated Panthers 20

Manly Sea Eagles vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

Not so long ago the Dragons couldn't score in a you-know-where, but right now they're top two and they've scored more points than every other team. How this transformation has occurred is anyone's guess but it's a delight to see. So too the Sea Eagles who looked destined for another ho-hum season. They've now won three on the trot and they're entertaining to boot. They're back at Lottoland and the last time they were here they flogged the Bulldogs 36-0. We'll have nothing like that scoreboard this weekend, but the Dragons are Dugan-less and his absence gives the home side a slight edge. With or without Dugan it's the game of the round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Dragons 35 defeated Sea Eagles 10

Gold Coast Titans vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

There's probably a way for the Raiders to lose this game, but there's at least a thousand ways they can win it. I'm happy to take $1.42. Good things.

Verdict – Raiders by 16

Result – Raiders 42 defeated Titans 16

North Queensland Cowboys vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

I can see Cleary now that Taylor's gone. A tough road trip for the new coach. The inury to Granville makes it a little easier but there was nothing in that Tigers attack last weekend that should worry the Cowboys too much. A tough road trip and a long quite flight home.

Verdict – Cowboys by 22

Result – Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 16

New Zealand Warriors vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

In the first two rounds the Eels beat the Sea Eagles and the Dragons, and all of sudden that looks like darn good form. Since then the Eels have been close to woeful. That said, they'll find this contest a lot easier than their last two outings against the Sharks and the Raiders. Given the players lining up for the Warriors on Sunday I can understand why they are a warm favourite on a Sunday at home, but goodess gracious you can't tip them with confidence. I'm leaning their way but barely so, because they've been awful and they fell over the line against an injury-depleted Titans last week. I'm assuming Foran will be better for the run last week, and his combinations with the rest of that Warriors spine should continue to improve. I'm not remotely confident, but the Eels have given me nothing to be confident about either. The home side...by default really.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result – Warriors 22 defeated Eels 10

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – AAMI Park

Call me a romantic old fool, but that was rather cute watching Cooper talking us through his decision to leave the Storm at the end of season 2017. My guess for where he ends up next season – the Dragons. I'm not sure how the Storm will respond to the news but they usually respond to just about everything by winning. I expect Cooper will feel some relief now that the decision is made and he'll be very keen indeed to do all he can to end his career in purple with another premiership. Clearly the Sharks can beat the Storm – they did exactly that in the 2016 grand final, but they've been to AAMI Park seven times previously and they're yet to find a win.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – SHarks 11 defeated Storm 2

Don't make mention of my name again it's not the first time you have ever done this to me last time was when bulldogs got beaten by souths so coach don't mention my name again do it to anyone else you like just leave me alone coach .

a's picture

Coach you do have anything better to do then pick on Christine come on let's get get to footy like the Thinker said

christine's picture

Thanks "a" Your right thinker did say keep it football related which I am & if you find it so hard coach not to stop targeting me then take it up with the thinker not me .

Johnny Awesome's picture

This week I could be looking like someone who lost the cheese off his cracker if the Dragons lose. But by the end of the round I could be as happy as the fleas on an old blue heeler after checking Mr Coach Potatos tips ha. Let's face it Mr Coach Potato you couldn't hit the floor if you fell out of bed regarding your tips. It's all good, keep trying. Cheers from Mr Awesome. P.S. Don't mind a bit of banter ????

Coach Potato's picture

Geez Thinker, I'm typing on bloody eggshells.

Clearly banter lives on, but the second I decide to take part, I'm gonna get caned for it.

I've got the utmost dislike for some players, but I've never wished bad things to happen to them. What is getting said tonight is just outrageous. Not to mention the "H" word.

Coach Potato's picture

.. without mentioning names! not bad huh?

Johnny Awesome's picture

You were starting to look a bit like a sheep on Astro turf.... confused, but I think you've got the drift now Mr Coach Potato

Rocket Ryan's picture

Broncos look good not many true belivers we havnt called for women and children yet way too early to jump ship f**k the roosters put your pets away mitchell we ready for you.

Coach Potato's picture

I'm not sure I have got it.

Does it mean I have to swallow everyone's crap, but the only one who's not allowed to answer back?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Gah, a 750 kick off and they are running out at 755. How hard is it to start on time. Last Sunday the first half took 60 minutes.

Look we should never wish harm on a player, are we forgetting that this is their and their families livelihood. Injuries destroy that just like that Brisbane winger whose name I can't spell.

Coach Potato's picture

Can I politely ask a question?

If people are watching the game live, and posting - but we aren't in the Lounge - then where the bloody hell are we?

#IsThisTheOutHouse?

Baggy_Gee's picture

That's OK Ryan, Mitchell punched the pooch against Doggies so the ponies are safe from getting shafted.

Baggy_Gee's picture

May not the outhouse, I'm just where the action is. Stupid Roosters, I don't really want the. ponies to get the points.

Coach Potato's picture

Gerard Sutton, you really love it at Suncorp.
I think Broncos likewise wish you could ref 'all' their games.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Free running game if your a pony boy. Darius looks scared of being hit though, and why was Robert's playing like a limp duck last week, a hammy doesn't heal over a week.

Baggy_Gee's picture

KFC just asked for a bit more air time. Bound and deaf Fred could have given that first look.

Coach Potato's picture

Q? When the ref says - I just want to check for obstruction, why does the Video Ref insist on checking grounding? He wasn't asked that question.

Baggy_Gee's picture

And frigging Darius again gave up in defence. Yes he can't stop the try buy give it a go man, just try to be as good as people tell us you are.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Like the right hand defence of the ponies, they may be in a world of pain when other good teams see how paper thin they are and how bad their second half scoring is. Ryan maybe another top 8 miss for Bennett.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Wow they needed a penalty and got a really soft one. Coincidence?????

Coach Potato's picture

There's 26 players out there who think they're back playing NYC.

christine's picture

Coach you can banter all you like but when you deliberately direct your comments towards me & everyone knows you are to get a reaction from me then that's a different story & it's got rather boring coach so give it a rest & stop making out your so innocent when your not just because I changed my tip so what if I want to do so that's no of your business .

Baggy_Gee's picture

Hunt to Fittler, the Roosters are a good side, we need another 14 points. Freddie, good luck. Fred Fittler reads the thinker, and saw the ponies second halves for the last few years. Big 40 coming up, ponies inability to score in the second vs my theory of the second half kick. If your losing and you kick off the second half you usually lose.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Baggy we blown 4 tries broncos to put them to the sword this half.

Coach Potato's picture

The problem is not my words, its your over-sensitivity. It's been the case for years, and it hasn't improved one bit.

If I say to anyone at all, that they shouldn't wish bad on another person, I'll bloody say so. I don't care who they are. I hardly think that's picking on someone.

Smarten up, for Pete's sake.

mark ashford's picture

Ah Coach are you blaming the refs yet again.
Lets just let the best team win.

Coach Potato's picture

Rocket, 20 of their last 22 games, failed to score more than 12 second half.

Be back soon.
I'm off to have a half time bet.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Ryan at some point you'll get a full back who tries in defence, and some talent who can catch. The last good set of hands was Ben "I'm allergic to steedans" Ikin.

christine's picture

Coach you hate souths so if I wish adam Reynolds to break his leg why should that bother you ,your just deliberately targeting anything I say so again take it up with the thinker coach it's not like I wished you to break your leg & the more you keep doing it the more you prove me right , anyway I didn't think you could get much more lower than your score on the tipping ladder but I guess I was wrong you can & have you target people with a disability & an illness guess your wife must be real proud of you for that.

Rocket Ryan's picture

What happened to coach did he hurt his leg

Baggy_Gee's picture

OK I don't care. Every single person deserves to earn a living doing what they love or are capable of doing. I will challenge anyone to back that crap of breaking a leg especially when it would be detrimental to their family. Who would wish the hardship on anyone willingly.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,

If you have an issue with what Christine said about Adam Reynolds I believe she has explained herself. She didn't want him kicking the Rabbitohs to victory. That's all.

And you may have forgotten, but I haven't forgotten what you hoped would happen to Cameron Smith on this site last year. It was a lot worse than a broken leg.

A few lapses in defence tonight from both sides. It's fun to watch, but sheeesh!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Yeah rushing to put money on the Roosters.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Can't stop Hunt scoring, but three Roosters still give it their all try and stop him.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Get your fist off it Sutton, he ducked into the tackle. Nothing the matter with that.

mark ashford's picture

What a joke hunts try was a try. Thank you Corbin Sims to get another one. But the Broncs need a few more point for + &-

Baggy_Gee's picture

Nah the one needs to go to Sutton, most blatant ref try I've seen in a while.

christine's picture

Thanks Thinker I appreciate you speaking up then without me having to ask you to intervene ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Flash, Flash, Flash. How could you do that? Die with the ball and go left or right and score. NYC indeed. Love to be at the ground, the atmosphere would lift the roof if it existed.

Baggy_Gee's picture

And now watch the Roosters implode as they try harder and harder to push that magic pass. No one seems to be able to pause, take a breath and reset their attack.

Footy chick's picture

Hey Thinker,
Are you watching the game tonight? Phil Gould just about quoted your Broncos/Roosters preview word for word a minute ago.
I think he likes you.
xx

a's picture

Ah what about tonight's game Broncos look like a threat

mark ashford's picture

AH I do love a Broncos win.
What none of you NSW baggers saying it was caused by the refs.
C'mon I cant hear you.
Sorry Newbie from Perth but the best team won.

Rocket Ryan's picture

The silence mark is deafening

a's picture

Yeah I love it when QLD teams won

a's picture

Yeah I love it when QLD teams won

Fortress's picture

Well done mark and rocket on a great win tonite that's the best way to silence the critics.

Big Pete are you there hope all is well big game for the mighty eagles this weekend if we can keep our form we should win.

Have a great Friday everyone !!!!!!

Rocket Ryan's picture

Hey Newbie we now know what BBB stands for battered bruised and breathless your boys might be able to beat the eels and panthers but fall short when faced with manly last and now the broncos all that has glittered may not be gold still a long way go who knows.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Baggy and coach did you get back from placing those bets in time to watch the second half.

Christine you are becoming hysterical about coach it can not be good for you most of what you shoot at him is bs I don't like the nice version of him and the panthers are on the slide i can annoy him all year the way things are shapping up.

a's picture

Stop picking on Christine for god sakes
