Round six selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Roosters may be perched in the upper reaches of the competition ladder, but when one looks at who they've played this season one starts to second guess them a little. They've played just one other team that's going well (the Sea Eagles) and they lost. The only other team they've played in the top eight is Penrith – now Penrith are barely in the top eight and the Chooks were pretty lucky to beat them. Meanwhile the Broncos have beaten the teams that are currently fifth and sixth and went painfully close to beating the teams that are currently first and fourth. Their loss last week to the Bulldogs was disappointing, but conditions on the night certainly didn't help. A return to a dry surface should see an improved performance from the home side. Note also the injury to Dylan Napa for the tricolours. He must have been on the verge of an Origin call-up this season and his absence evens up that forward contest. Potentially the game of the round in front of what should be a big crowd for a Thursday night.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos 32 defeated Roosters 8

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

We must give credit where it's due, and the Knights deserve some credit. But for one absolute blow-out they've been competitive week-in and week-out. Given the cattle they have at their disposal it's hard to ask for more than that. If the Bulldogs take this game lightly they'll come unstuck, but I'm leaping to the conclusion that Des will insist that they aren't in form until they are stringing wins together. Two is a string...for the Bulldogs at least.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 8

Result – Bulldogs 22 defeated Knights 12

Penrith Panthers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pepper Stadium

The Panthers were given a lesson in professionalism by the Melbourne Storm, then three of their players backed up that effort by breaking curfew and getting on the drink. So no Moylan, no Blake and no Hiku this weekend. They'll be sitting alongside the injured Peachey, Cartwright, and Fisher-Harris which leaves one of the most talented rosters in the competition light on for talent. Some young kids get a chance to step up in front of a home crowd. Some will handle it and some won't. There's enough doubts for me and I'm happy to tip the Bunnies in an upset.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result – Rabbitohs 21 defeated Panthers 20

Manly Sea Eagles vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

Not so long ago the Dragons couldn't score in a you-know-where, but right now they're top two and they've scored more points than every other team. How this transformation has occurred is anyone's guess but it's a delight to see. So too the Sea Eagles who looked destined for another ho-hum season. They've now won three on the trot and they're entertaining to boot. They're back at Lottoland and the last time they were here they flogged the Bulldogs 36-0. We'll have nothing like that scoreboard this weekend, but the Dragons are Dugan-less and his absence gives the home side a slight edge. With or without Dugan it's the game of the round.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Dragons 35 defeated Sea Eagles 10

Gold Coast Titans vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

There's probably a way for the Raiders to lose this game, but there's at least a thousand ways they can win it. I'm happy to take $1.42. Good things.

Verdict – Raiders by 16

Result – Raiders 42 defeated Titans 16

North Queensland Cowboys vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

I can see Cleary now that Taylor's gone. A tough road trip for the new coach. The inury to Granville makes it a little easier but there was nothing in that Tigers attack last weekend that should worry the Cowboys too much. A tough road trip and a long quite flight home.

Verdict – Cowboys by 22

Result – Tigers 26 defeated Cowboys 16

New Zealand Warriors vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

In the first two rounds the Eels beat the Sea Eagles and the Dragons, and all of sudden that looks like darn good form. Since then the Eels have been close to woeful. That said, they'll find this contest a lot easier than their last two outings against the Sharks and the Raiders. Given the players lining up for the Warriors on Sunday I can understand why they are a warm favourite on a Sunday at home, but goodess gracious you can't tip them with confidence. I'm leaning their way but barely so, because they've been awful and they fell over the line against an injury-depleted Titans last week. I'm assuming Foran will be better for the run last week, and his combinations with the rest of that Warriors spine should continue to improve. I'm not remotely confident, but the Eels have given me nothing to be confident about either. The home side...by default really.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result – Warriors 22 defeated Eels 10

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – AAMI Park

Call me a romantic old fool, but that was rather cute watching Cooper talking us through his decision to leave the Storm at the end of season 2017. My guess for where he ends up next season – the Dragons. I'm not sure how the Storm will respond to the news but they usually respond to just about everything by winning. I expect Cooper will feel some relief now that the decision is made and he'll be very keen indeed to do all he can to end his career in purple with another premiership. Clearly the Sharks can beat the Storm – they did exactly that in the 2016 grand final, but they've been to AAMI Park seven times previously and they're yet to find a win.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – SHarks 11 defeated Storm 2

Wally Lewis - round six selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BRONCOS vs Roosters
  • Knights vs BULLDOGS
  • PANTHERS vs Rabbitohs
  • SEA EAGLES vs Dragons
  • Titans vs RAIDERS
  • COWBOYS vs Tigers
  • WARRIORS vs Eels
  • STORM vs Sharks

Just got to go with your gut instinct & not over think things but I did change my mind to end up taking souths before last nights game & believe me I did over think things but I knew it would come down to kicking & as I said that's all adam Reynolds does at training he perfects his kicking ,but the game could have gone either way & at least he didn't break his leg ...

christine's picture

Johnny ray I want to see the aussie haka again & hows your baileys going that newbie put you on too ?

pabdul's picture

i think everyone should back off the coach for one day.
famous comedian don rickles died yesterday. he did the voice of mr potato head in toy story..let the guy greave.

Great thinking "Thinker". I have followed your site for the last 3 years after I decided to have some fun and join the work footy comp - in a sport I knew absolutely nothing about. As I originated from SA. AFL (no I'm not swearing) was the only footy that I knew a bit about. I have had a great deal of enjoyment (and disappointments with some comments) from this sight in my endeavours to learn more about NRL. As a result I have had some success in my footy tipping - probably more luck than judgement. I have now lived in Qld for a number of years (no I'm not swearing again) so will go for Qld in State of Origin this year. We were fortunate in not experiencing the might of TC Debbie - hope there was not two much damage for you "a" or anyone else effected. See NZ also had damage - wonder what effect on the match this weekend.
Best of luck to everyone for their team of choice!!
Cheers
Mary S

christine's picture

pabdul you have no idea what your talking about coach expects much worse than that from a lot of us because that's what he dishes out to everyone else but i'm not going to give it to him ...

a's picture

Yeah I hope Debbie does no damage to NZ

pabdul's picture

what happened to having a sense of humour. I'll stop posting now and let u get back to boring stats.

a's picture

But Coach picks on Christine and oh yeah we do have a sense of humour that's why we love Johnny Ray but Coach picks on Christine all the time even when she keep him on the site and I hope he doesn't pick on me because I have autism so we do have a sense of humour

a's picture

Mary S I hope you comment more often we would love to have another female on board

Fortress's picture

Steel Panther's picture

For those of you asking about Cyclone Debbie on this side of the ditch I can tell you it's been a rough week here in Auckland weatherwise with a lot of heavy rain & flooding. In fact it's been a rough month if those of you can remember the weather conditions for the Warriors v Storm game in round 2 but today we had a beautiful sunny day & expect tomorrow to be ok for the Warriors v Eels game.

a's picture

Yeah stay safe Steel

Baggy_Gee's picture

The BOYS will love to be playing in the sun. But still going to be uphill battle, it's all good pushing hard makes us better, if we push back hard we improve.

christine's picture

Baggy Gee What sort of welcome are the boys going to give foran ? & do you think foran is going to even play the game against his old team or will he pull out of playing against them ?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Nope, we'll belt him just as hard as anyone else. If you focus on one man then the rest will shread you. It's always best to treat it as the usual game with nothing special. But it'll be nice to beat them with him in the team.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Damn Tiger's, at least they are getting the win ATM. If I lose the point there is a silver lining that the Tiger's might be working stuff out.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Mary s and welcome.
Don't know who you support in the regular comp but you are very welcome as a QLD supporter...hope we don't let you down.

tigerholic's picture

That's amazing, we beat the Cowboys in Townsville

Yee Ha, that's made my weekend.

mark ashford's picture

Johnnie Ray
There is enough agro on this site to turn your hair white.
You, my friend, provide much needed comedy so I would ask you to reconsider your decision. You are needed here.

a's picture

Things are not looking too good for the Cowboys

Baggy_Gee's picture

Congrats to the boys Tigerholic. A good win in a hostile environment, can't believe it myself but its good to see that some of the basket cases in the league are punching above their weight and doing the giant killing. At some point the Knights, Tigers and Titans will pull their collective irons out of the fire and get into shape and that will make for a great top 8 that year.

christine's picture

Well done tigerholic you called it didn't you that tigers might be an upset seeing they have a new coach , good call ...

mark ashford's picture

Tiger....congrats to your Tigers. Going to Townsville and beating the Cowboys convincingly is a big feather in your cap.
The two hardest road trips, to get a win,are Townsville and Melbourne.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Manly disappointed me did not come to play one of those days as fortress said at least he gave baggy a spray not putting up with him taking a cheap shot then to make matters worse the the tigers win you would of should of known new coach works most times dont consider form when tipping thatz for sure.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Shame no one backed the Tiger for the upset. Ah the 20/20 of hindsight

mark ashford's picture

"a" don't worry too much about your loss. The Cows were due one, will only make them better.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Good call tigerholic my arse he had no idea the man is clueless you cant congratulate the buffoon surely.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Just finished watching the Manly game, my hopeless self and the rest of the Under 18 I played with back in the day could have carved up the Manly defence. Watching the $10 million boy was nothing but tears and excuses. Trying to fight the fullback and let the softest try in the world EVER, then watching him cry in front of the ref. Ahhhhhhh that will keep me happy for years to come.

Mary S's picture

Thanks for the welcome guys & gals. As I'm a Nth Qld resident it seemed fitting for Cowboys to be my team of choice and I'm an admirer of the JT's skills and anticipation of play. I'm glad you have had a good night for your team tigerholic - dreary for me. I note that everyone had gone for Cowboys in their tipping though, so upset for all of us with points.

a's picture

It's not the loss I concerned about Tis JT injury is what I'm concerned about

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Oh boy how good does it feel to be on top of the tree. I'd like to get the Storm right for my tipping but I do hope that they lose so we can stay on top. Also, congratulations to the Tigers on their win, cost me a perfect round. Great start for Cleary as coach of the Tigers. Also, stay safe Steel Panther, good to hear that there may be no heavy rain coming your way :)

Fortress's picture

You know what baggy pants u are a waste of space can't wait for the warriors to smash your team of rorters, then counting the days when we plag ur pathetic mob.

You see baggy pants u are a disgrace to this site come to brookie panzie when we play ur tripe bet u you won't but then again always knew u were a coward.

So baggy pants grow a brain your not a smart as you think in fact ur posts are nothing better than the toilet paper all the rest of us on this site use for wiping.

And one last thing baggy pants if ur bunch of no hopers lose tommorrow don't run away cause you know I'll be on here to get ya haaaaaahaaaaaaaa.

Hey rocket yep it wasn't one of our best but hey were doing better than what the critics thought will be back can't wait to play what's the matter parramatta hey baggy pants.

Take care everyone have a great weekend.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Manly doing much better than everyone thought fortress i was commenting on considering form when tipping take that rabble the tigers last night as an example.

tigerholic's picture

Rocket
You have to learn to give credit where credit is due. I am the first to admit that I had zero confidence leading into last nights game as did every other tipster world wide, but the Tigers turned up last night and I can happily say that they deserved to win, Thurston only went off late so that can't be used as an excuse.
Being a Tigers fan is either going to be rocks or diamonds, this week it is diamonds and I'm going to enjoy the win until at least Easter Monday when we take on the Eels.
I tipped the eels to fire against the Warriors but Bevan French now out will make it a tough trip got Baggy and his boys.
Have a great Sunday, that goes out to you too Coachy Boy.

tigerholic's picture

Morning Thinker
Can you please make contact with Seaeagle47 to tell him how to claim his prize, I believe he asked to change to a Tigers cap:)
He asked me to put you in touch off site with him.

Cheers

The Thinker's picture

Well played Tigerholic

I wish I waited a few more days to organise his prize...they might be half price now.

Steel Panther's picture

Hey dragonsfan boy. We've already had our average monthly rainfall for April in just a few days. We got the tail end of Debbie last week but weather has cleared now.

a.. hope ur recovering from ur bad weather. Last ngt wld hav been tough 2 take & well done 2 the Tigers. Like u say Tigerholic rocks & diamonds very much like my own team the Warriors only we have way more rocks than diamonds.

Good luck to your BOYS today Baggy. It shld b a dry track. Will b interesting to see what scrutiny Foran comes under.

Thought the Dogs were extremely poor on Friday night & can the real Manly please stand up!!!

a's picture

Thanks Steel I Hope JT is okay I think he will be out for a while

BigPeteBx's picture

Hey Fortress - what happened to us yesterday?
I went out at 3.15pm and when I arrived home, we were done over.
The Boys sound like they fell over in the pre-match warm-up.

BTW - have you got rid of the hotmail home account. I sent you one and it bounced back as being not available.
I thought you may have been at the game and might have read it, rather than waiting to log into Thinker site.

Oh well - congrats to Dragons, they obviously played extra well at Brooky. But remember, it is still only Round 6 of 26 and a long and winding road, to yet go down.

But what I do ask, especially for tippers/punters - when does the real Manly standup/turnup.
Cheers - Big Pete

Fortress's picture

Hey rocket yeah mate but its a long season and both our teams will be there don't worry.

Psrramatra the rorters and the tigers won't be there both as inept and no hopes just like baggy pants the gronk and his good mate tiger frollic.

Mr awsome don't worry Buddy enjoy the win your losses will come and soon your drag queens will wobble just hope ur strong enough when your mob start to crash good luck haaaahaaaaaa

Hi to big Pete mark ashord the rocket and everyone else have a great weekend.

BigPeteBx's picture

Good afternoon Rocket - I had a gut feel with Tigers and a new coach, who'd hardly had enough time to massage his players up.
But obviously the psycho game came into play and it did the trick.
Keep well and Broncs will be good value for home games. Travelling with the longer journey's, might be another re-think.
Big Pete

Fortress's picture

Hey baggy pants you gronk don't hide ur mob of tripe is getting done like a dinner come on baggy pants what u got u coward I'll be back on to give it to you more

What's the matter parramatta haaaaaahaaaaaaaaa

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Mary S and also welcome.

Never fear, this site has its conundrums, but you'll get by. Just ignore anything that you feel is insulting. Over all, the site has some great posts and leads to some hidden hints for tipping.
R u a Townsville based Cowboy - girl?
Nice seeing you here, like our Christine and Footy Chick and C.Bailey.

Cheers and enjoy the journey.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Ahh it was to many easy tries in the end, the only one I'm upset about was that lucky bounce of the leg straight to Thompson. We got done, but at least the BOYS had the presence of mind not to try and push a guy away for no purpose and give up a dummy half try. Still there are other parts that are great about supporting the BOYS over Manly. I got a full education and can spell and type correctly, I know how to eat with knife and fork and I know that there is two sides of the harbour. So supporting Parra is a daily joy.

Fortress's picture

Cry me a river baggy pants u eat with a knife a fiork do you far out you are a first rate scum bag u uneducated bag of cow dunn.

The under 8 "s in the district comp up here would of gone through your mob of spew.

Baggy pants I hope u suffer for the rest of the year excuses for you loss again ur not a footy supporter just a bag of wind

So baggy pants crawl back in your rat infested hole and please don't come out u can eat with your knife and fork down the sewer.

What's the matter parranatta haaaaaahaaaaaa sucked in!!!!!!!!!
