The off-season

Greetings football fans.

For those of you hoping to stay in touch between now and season 2019...here is the place to do so.

All things sport and anything else for that matter. There won't be a massive number of people around in the off season, but those that are usually pretty good value. I'll drop in from time to time myself, for what it's worth.

All the best.

Maguire is off to coach tigers & ivan is going to hook up with his son , I wonder how tigerholic feels about Maguire coaching his team ? ...

mark ashford's picture

Hi Chris
According to the Tigers Boss Maguire will be a perfect fit.
And I think he's right. Maguire is a good coach.
Was only a couple of weeks ago Cleary said he was committed to Tigers
Will it be unsettling at the Panthers with Dad coaching Nathan.
If Nathan screws up will Dad drop him to a lower grade, could cause trouble at home.
No problem, the Master Phil Gould will sort it all out.

mark ashford's picture

Hey Valentine Homes off to the Cowboys and Klemmer to become a Knight. Great fit for both teams.
Homes to give the Cowboys heaps of trys and Klemmer to give the Knights some real strength in the forwards.
I'm off on a 2 week cruise to NZ and hope to catch up with our mate Steel Panther. Talk again after the 19th November

christine 's picture

Have a safe trip Mark

mark ashford's picture

Christine, Mary A and "a" thank you for your kind wishes. I'm sure we'll have a great trip. My first to NZ and really looking forward to it.
I'll certainly pass on your "hellos" to Steel and give you an update when I get back. In the meantime you all keep well and happy.
Talk again in a couple of weeks time.

Steel Panther's picture

Hello to all...yes hoping to catch up with Mark when he docks in Auckland next week.

I wish you happy cruising Mark and look forward to meeting you soon.

Cheers

my hubby threatened to jump 12 floors
after reading half of your statement

christine 's picture

Mary s
I leave this one in your hands for you to deal with ...

Johnny Awesome's picture

Thankyou Mr Thinker,
You are pretty genuine and unique.
Cheers from the original Johnny Awesome

Mary S's picture

Hi Nola Todd,
How did you go with your tipping comp in the end.
I gathered from your occasional posts that you were following Tigergirl's pick. She certainly did well and the stats Thinker posted shows she has been consistent in how well she has done over a period.

Perhaps you would like to tell us whose 'statement' had your husband considering such drastic action as to threatened to jump 12 floors.

A statement is defined as a sentence that says something is true, so I am unsure what/who would have irritated him, from previous posts I have read.
It helps to address the person posting, if you don't agree with their thoughts, and want to say so.

So glad he didn't carry out his threat!

Anyone watching Melbourne Cup today

manyana's picture

Hi "a", yes, me. Just about to settle into my chair, sit under the fan, & try & pick a winner.
The soft track could change things a bit.
Just heard that someone put big bikkies on the favourite. They must have more money than sense.
Hope you pick a winner "a".
Cheers, Manyana.

Mary S's picture

Yes 'a'.
I went to Melbourne Cup lunch. Didn't pick the winner but managed 3rd in a sweep.
Had a good day!
Cheers,
Mary

Mary s
Hi mary just a ? have you ever wondered if nola todd might be mrs fortress cause I sure have they both only seem to surface when they want to say something nasty & upset people on this site , it's quite pitiful & sad really that they think we care but small things do amuse small minds, nice to speak to you mary hope the weather is treating you good up there but for me the heat is really knocking me around ...

Mary S's picture

Hi Christine,
Good to hear from you.
Temps currently max at around 31 - 36d in NQld over the last few days, and rain has been almost non existent for a few weeks. Hopefully, it is not going to be a long, hot and dry summer!!
Have to say that one of the perks of working part time again, is being in the aircon. that I don't get the power bill for!!!!

On the other point Christine, it's a possibility, but personally, I figure it is not worth worrying about, as there are more great, interesting and interested people post on this site than not.

Hope you are having more good days than bad.
Cheers,
Mary

a's picture

Manyana I got 2nd and 3rd

manyana's picture

Good for you a, I stayed home, sat under the fan, & mainly picked losers in most races. I did pick 2nd in the cup, but didn't have a bet, & won $12 on sweeps that cost me $10. So, I'm up $2. Ha ha.
Cheers, Manyana.

manyana's picture

Hi Mary S, where are you in NQ? That's of course if you want to tell me. If you don't, that's fine.
I have a step son in Mackay.
It's a bit warm on Bribie too.
Cheers, Manyana.

manyana's picture

Christine, sadly some people just like to try & cause trouble. I find ignoring them is the best way.
Hope you're having some good days.
Cheers, Manyana.

Mary S's picture

Hi Manyana,
I seem to have a foot in 2 towns at present - Townsville & Ingham, working 4 days in one, then home to the other. Makes life interesting!!
Cheers, Mary

manyana's picture

Hi Mary, yes it does make life interesting. Just think how bored you'd be if you weren't doing that. lol.
Cheers, Manyana.

christine 's picture

Mary s & Manyana
That was precisely my point that the comment I was referring to was just to try to make trouble which as we know we have certainly seen enough of that on this site before in the past & we certainly don't need any more of it the Thinker has enough to do without having to put up with that in the off season as well ...

a's picture

Yep agreed Christine and Mary S the Thinker doesn't need to be dealing with anyone trying to turn this website into a soap opera in the off season

Steel Panther's picture

Hello everyone...well I've just got back from meeting Mark Ashford who was easily recognisable in his Broncos polo!! We had a bit of a walk around then settled in for a coffee and a good chat. To all of us out there who respect Mark as a person through his comments on this site, trust me when I say he is a true gentleman "off the field". It was a pleasure to meet him and talk about all sorts not just Rugby League. Mark tells me he is enjoying his cruise and loving the chance to get to see some of NZ. And a hello back to you too Manyana!!

manyana's picture

Hello Steel Panther, glad your meeting was a success. As you said, Mark is a real gentleman & you can talk to him about all sorts of things.
He & I also found out that we both lived on the Gold Coast at the same time, so another subject to talk about.
We've certainly enjoyed our "coffee dates" with him, & now regard him as a true friend.
Good to hear that he's enjoying his cruise, & I'm sure he & my partner will enjoy discussing NZ.
Hoping that you are still thinking about coming to the Sunshine Coast early next year.
Cheers for now, Manyana.

christine 's picture

Steel panther/ manyana
I have said it before Mark ashford is a true gentleman in all the years that I have been on this site mark has never changed his views or opinions on things he speaks up when he feels he should , he backs up his beliefs with facts he has knowledge of what he is talking about with RL in general he doesn't mind speaking up if there is any in justice on this site , Mark I have said this to you before on this site please never change mark stay just the way you are because these days it's hard to find but in general everyone on this site are what makes this site so no one gets left out never change please this site wouldn't be the same without you all ...

manyana's picture

Lovely comments Christine. I'm sure Mark will blush & be very happy with what has been said about him when he reads them.
Cheers, Manyana.

Steel Panther's picture

Hi Manyana
Hope all is well on Bribie Island. One of its residents is due to return on Sunday!! Only in the past week have I firmed up another trip to the Sunshine Coast. Will be there from 3/3 to 10/3 staying againin Alexandra Headland. At this stage I don't know my exact plans for the week but I'm sure we should be able to work out something re catching up.

Hi Christine
Not a truer word spoken about Mark. I hope things are as good as they possibly can be with you. Take care and stay strong.

manyana's picture

Hi Steele Panther, great to hear that you're coming "across the ditch".
I'm sure we can sort out about catching up. Mark is probably organizing it in his head already.
Looking forward to seeing him & find out his thoughts about cruising.
Personally, I think it's the only way to go, mainly because if I do too much in the way of travel, I either get blood clots (not fun), or it takes me about 3 weeks to get over the journey.
Bye for now, Manyana.

christine 's picture

To all that is interested I just spent 6 hours on a drip yesterday in hospital for my treatment & 1 hour observation afterwards not fun I don't recommend it to anyone but when you have no choice you have to do these things & i'm waiting to find out if it's a side affect or not but my face has been bright red all day today & it hasn't been previously but the dose the gave me yesterday was two half doses in 1 so 1 full dose instead of two half doses two weeks apart but that seems to be the only side affect if it is because I wasn't actually hot at all but I certainly looked like I was & no mark won't blush he has heard me say that to him before manyana ...

manyana's picture

Hi Christine, I'm sorry to hear what a rough day you had, & I certainly hope that they find out why your face went red.
I hope that you don't have to go through that treatment again for quite a while.
With luck, & probably a lot of rest you will feel a bit better .
Take care, Manyana.

mark ashford's picture

Hi all
I'm back on beautiful Bribie after an amazing cruise around beautiful NZ
Reading your kind comments did make me blush a bit but only cemented my belief that Thinker has created a site not only for tipping but for genuine friends to come together, I thank you all. We may not be lucky enough to meet each other in person but keep in touch here.
I could do a "Newbie" report on NZ but let me say it is an amazingly beautiful country, friendly people and lots to do and see.
Any Aussies who don't like Kiwis need to make a visit to NZ, I guarantee you will be converted. The cruise was terrific but the Country was better. If you can afford to go there DO IT you won't be disappointed.

mark ashford's picture

Having posted a travelogue about NZ I'm sure most of you want to hear about Steel Panther.
We met on the dock in Auckland and Steel took me for a stroll around Auckland's magnificent harbour.
Big Pete you may have a rival for the sites best gentleman as I could not have been more welcomed. Over a coffee we discussed RL and agreed on most points. He supports Warriors of course but is a secret Roosters fan and a closet Blues man. (hope you don't mind Steel) but overall you could not meet a nicer person.
Thank you for your welcome to Auckland.

a's picture

I'm glad that I have you back Mark I'm glad you enjoyed your trip what do you think of the Broncos

The Thinker's picture

Steel and Mark

It's great to hear about you catching up...and that you got on.

All the best

Mary S's picture

Hi Mark,
Welcome back.
So glad you enjoyed your trip and meeting Steel (bonus).
I agree with you, NZ is a beautiful country!

I see it has been announced on NRL website that Josh McGuire has signed a 4 year deal with Cowboys.

It is going to be interesting to see if any team is remotely recognisable at the beginning of the 2019 season, to those that finished 2018.
Cheers to all
Mary

mark ashford's picture

Hi Thinker
Thanks for providing the catch up details. Steel is a top bloke and I hope he stays here for the duration, I'm sure he will.

Hi "a"
Thanks for your welcome back. I'm still catching up with the Broncs but Josh Maguire will be a loss to the Broncs and a big benefit to your Cowboys. I also heard Alex Glenn may be going to the Titans.

Mary S
Steel and I discussed the Broncos/Souths coach nonsense and agreed it should happen now not after 2019 season. Damien Cook has denied he's going to the Broncs but we'll see.
Agree with you wholeheartedly will any of us recognize our teams on kickoff next year?

a's picture

What do you think about Hayne I think his career is over

christine 's picture

Welcome back mark , I don't believe I made you blush ...
Oh jarryd hayne has been arrested & charged with aggravated sexual assault causing bodily harm just waiting to see if he gets bail or not he was at ryde police station ...

mark ashford's picture

"a"
before I went away I heard Hayne wanted $700 000 a season but Eels could only pay $400 000. Have you heard any more recent news?
If it were up to me I think he's worth $200 000 and no more.
Probably the worst show pony and inconsistent player I've seen.

christine 's picture

Mark
Jarryd was in talks with dragons & they were talking about $1.4 mil over 2 years but once this all became public knowledge dragons have pulled out so I think "a" is right in saying hayne won't be getting signed by another club ...

a's picture

I think Hayne should be playing reserve grade

Baggy_Gee's picture

How about we let the police do their job and not judge him via the media. If the police find that there is a case all well and good, if like America they find there is no legal case then also fine and dandy. Innocent till guilt is found.

manyana's picture

Hi all, (sorry Steel), but I think Shaun Johnson loafs a bit, as does Hayne.
If Johnson or Hayne actually put in 80 minutes of football, both teams would have done better.
They only seem to come & go in most games, but when they "put in" it makes a big difference to how the rest of their respective teams play.
I love to see both Shaun & Jarrod, run with the ball they are both fast & have good side steps.
Cheers Manyana.

christine 's picture

Baggy
The police have done their work jarryd has been charged so now it's up to the courts , I hope the police said to him this is our house ...

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
Your club has copped a fair bit over the past couple of years and I don't want to be another critic of the club or players. BUT Hayne has not only been accused of aggravated sexual assault but charged by NSW police.
Not his first charge as we know. Where there is smoke there is fire.
Yes let the Police sort it out but surely Parra is better off without him.
I sincerely wish your Eels the very best for 2019.

a's picture

Yeah I'm sure the Eels will be better in 2019

mark ashford's picture

Christine
Thank you for your support here, with what you are dealing with it's nice to see you can find time to recognize others that care for you.
Jarryd Hayne was a superstar in the making while he was at Parra.
I didn't like him because he beat my Maroons & Broncos on many occasions. Whatever got into his head to chase NFL and then Rugby finished his career. Had he stayed at Parra for all of his time there may have been a Wally Lewis type statue at Parra stadium.
Giant ego? poor advice? greedy manager? who knows?
But it looks like goodbye Jarryd Hayne.
