Wests Tigers vs Canberra Raiders – Thursday night – Leichhardt Oval
It's not often that a Thursday night game is a sellout, but this could be an exception. The Tigers have won four of their last five outings at Leichhardt, but this is a venue and a team that will hold few fears for the Raiders. They've won ten of their last eleven games with the Tigers, and haven't lost at Leichhardt Oval for more than 15 years. Still, the suspension to Hudson Young (in career best-form) and the injury to Papalii has me thinking that this young impressive Tigers pack can gain an edge in the middle, particularly at home. The Luai/Doueihi halves combination was a bit rusty last week in their narrow loss to the Broncos, but should continue to get better with time. There's an arguable argument that the Tigers spine of Bula, Luai, Doueihi and Koroisau is one of the best in the NRL. Looks like the game of the round to my eyes.
Verdict - Tigers by 2
Result - Tigers 33 defeated Raiders 14
North Queensland Cowboys vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – Queensland Country Bank Stadium
Some important inclusions for the Cowboys - Taulagi and Mahoney are back and Nanai returns to the field for the first time this season. It helps. For the Sharks, McInnes returns earlier than expected from his ACL injury. He'll start off the bench and will likely need the run, but McInnes needing the run still means 35 tackles in 40 minutes I suspect. He's built different. The Sharks have had plenty of time to recover from their round 6 trip to Perth. An away game in Perth followed by an away game in Townsville isn't exactly ideal, but at least they had a bye in between. Their record in Townsville is also pretty good, and for reasons unknown the Cowboys have struggled against the Sharks for years now. Further to that, the Cowboys performance last week against the Sea Eagles was simply awful. A completion rate of 58% will see you beaten by all-comers, and beaten they were. I'm sure they'll improve, but they couldn't get any worse (I hope). I can't see them improving enough for the win.
Verdict - Sharks by 7
Result - Cowboys 46 defeated Sharks 34
Brisbane Broncos vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium
There's a list doing the rounds of the unavailable Broncos, and it's an impressive starting thirteen. Last night, Deine Mariner gave the team another scare when he hobbled off at training, but he's fine. Corey Paix returns at dummy half on Friday night, so there's one casualty returning at least. The Broncos backline is still first class, but it's in the forwards where they will struggle. Their starting props this week are Talty and Gosiewski, with Jaiyden Hunt providing some relief off the bench. They'll give their all, but it's a big ask. For the Bulldogs, club captain Stephen Crichton returns in the centres, which will tighten up their defence on the edge. The Broncos were good enough to hold out the Tigers last week. They could win this too without surprising, but I'm tipping the Dogs.
Verdict - Bulldogs by 4
Result - Broncos 32 defeated Bulldogs 12
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday afternoon – Allianz Stadium
This is always a big game every year, but it's getting plenty of added attention with the dismissal of the Dragons coach on Monday morning. They cancelled a training run on the Tuesday, because they still hadn't finalised a replacement, so it's fair to say that not everyone at the Dragons agrees with the decision to hand Dean Young the clipboard. He gets a chance to the prove the doubters wrong, at least. Many of us will be ruminating on the unbeaten run of the Sea Eagles since they replaced their coach, and are wondering if the Dragons can do the same thing. I don't think they can, but I do think we will see a better showing. Note that the Roosters have been slow out of the gates in their last two games, so this could be one of those matches where the Dragons take a lead into the sheds at half-time, only to fall short at the end of 80 minutes. Kade Reed makes his debut in the halves for the Dragons, replacing the former coaches son who's been demoted to an extended bench. Make of that what you will Ryan Couchman and Suli also return for the Dragons, but they lose the suspended Su'A for a few weeks. No major changes for the Roosters who are on a bit of a roll after a wobbly start to the season. The traditional ANZAC game in the NRL is always worthy of your eyeballs, but I expect the Chooks will have to much class in the end.
Verdict - Roosters by 10
Result - Roosters 62 defeated Dragons 16
New Zealand Warriors vs Redcliffe Dolphins – Saturday night – Hnry Stadium, Wellington
A meteorological challenge for the Dolphins, who are backing up from an extra time one-point loss to the Panthers in a hot and humid Darwin with a trip across the ditch to a cold and windy Wellington. Based on that alone, I find it hard to tip the visitors. Notably, this game sold out more than a week ago, a fair indication of how much support the Warriors (and rugby league) currently has in New Zealand at the minute. Schneider replaces the suspended Nikorima in the halves for the visitors, while Tuaupiki returns at fullback for the injured Nikoll-Klokstad for the Warriors.
Verdict - Warriors by 8
Result - Warriors 20 defeated Dolphins 18
Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – AAMI Park
15th plays 4th, and for reasons that have me a little baffled the Storm are a warm favourite to win on Saturday night. No changes for the Storm, who have now lost five in a row. Three of those losses were competitive at least, but those were the sort of game we are used to seeing the Storm win. Having two of the best finishers in the game unavailable (Coates and Katoa) wouldn't help. No changes for the Rabbitohs either, who have scored 30 or more points in their last three games. The Storm have averaged around 16 points per game over their last five losses, so it looks like the Bunnies have the edge there. It should be noted though, that the Rabbitohs have never won a game in Melbourne....ever. The Storm have also won their last 9 ANZAC Day games, and Bellamy has an enviable overall record against Bennett. I might have found the reasons why the Storm are a warm favourite, but I'm taking them on regardless. Mitchell to slot a casual field goal late to seal the victory.
Verdict - Rabbitohs by 1
Result - Rabbitohs 48 defeated Storm 6
Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium
The Sunday afternoon timeslot at McDonald Jones Stadium was once a fortress for the Knights, but not so much in recent years. They've won just one of their last eight games at home, and they've won just one of their last nine games against the Panthers. A confronting combination of stats for the home side there. Schiller comes into the side to replace the injured Marzhew. A few changes for the Panthers, with Kenny in the casualty ward for an extended period with a leg fracture. Lussick replaces him in the dummy-half role, while McLean returns in the centres after serving his suspension. The Panthers do have to back up from the trip to Darwin, so they could be running on fumes in the final 20 minutes. With that in mind, I expect the Panthers will want to get out to a flying start and put this game to bed as soon as they can.
Verdict - Panthers by 8
Result - Panthers 44 defeated Knights 12
Manly Sea Eagles vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – 4 Pines Park
Here we go again, Manly and Parra. Parra’s well ahead but the gap starts to narrow. Manly’s coming back, it seems like they’re built out of steel. How do you feel? See the video for context. Manly at Brookvale on a Sunday afternoon. Always hard to tip against. Should be a cracking contest though.
Verdict - Sea Eagles by 4
Result - Sea Eagles 33 defeated Eels 18

Greetings football fans
I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round seven. Most of us scored 4 or 5 with a decent handfull of us picking up 6 from 8. Well done to you all. As always, if you notice any issues with the scoring just let me know.
I'll have my previews and selections for ANZAC round published on Wednesday.

So, didn't get home until 7:00 pm Thur night. I'd have backed the Cowboys, so nothing lost there. I would have gone with the Thinker for this round with Canberra, Penrith, Warriors, Rabbbitohs, Tigers, Roosters, Bulldogs winning. Oh well, back to my usual position on the bottom.

Thank you, Mary S
I'd be lost without you. I have added The Colonel now.

To frustrating tipping
I thought the following from ESPN said it all about tipping so far this season -
“Round 7 concluded with an upset of epic proportions as the Eels completely embarrassed the Bulldogs in what can only be described as a typical result for this infuriating season.”
What followed on, was a take on the positives and negatives of each team’s performance in R7 if you're interested.

Mr Thinker,,it would be interesting to see what the top score was at this time last year compared to now.
Submitted by The Thinker on
@Mary S
I have added a link in there for you (in your comment)
@Esra
You are right...it would be.
Sadly I don't have that detail. But, we are roughly a quarter of the way through the season. Our current leaders, if they maintain their current success rates, are on track to score around 140. That total would be enough to win and or/make the podium in the last two years. The three years prior to that were a little easier. Not a lot of data there, but it appears like tipping has started getting a little harder (again).
I'll add two more points:
* its harder in the early rounds - I've often spruiked my theory that a betting person should just back the outsiders from round 2 until at least round 6.
* its easier in the later rounds - teams fall off, the really good teams get really good heading into the finals...and you have a whole season of football as a guide to picking winners.
With that in mind, it wouldn't surprise me if your top three this season end up with totals above 140.

Someone cleverer than I was able to find the scores after round 7 last season.
Our leader was on 36, with five tipsters level on 34 in second place. For those worried they may not catch up, only one of those 6 tipsters finished in our top three at the end of the year.

Tigers' 3rd AND 4th try Both off forward passes.
.. The hardest part is listening to that dickhead Mathew Thompson GUSH about how BRILLIANT it all is .. he's never seen a fwd pass in his life!!
At least Gus Gould described the 4th one as Slightly forward but he made it sound inconsequential.
... NOT!

Well done Mary.
Being a loyal fan has paid dividends this week!
Tigerholic and even Rocket Ryan also!
Maybe my punt on the Eels will pay off also.
If Broncos hold that half-time lead I'm 0/3 so far :-(

Well said Mary.

MGM I've made a couple of errors with the broncos this year from now on I'll take my licks with the team,Tigerholic however is a complete fraud raving tiger dribble in past years and never backing them ,a complete phoney and buffoon he is this year just lucky the team is emerging or he would be the first into the lifeboat.
Submitted by Rocket Ryan on
We all realise what a big job the Dragons coach is my question is can they win a game this year unless a lot of players look hard at themselves.
Submitted by MGM on
Enough is enough.
I just watched Tallis Duncan get awarded a try in the 36th minute after getting in front of the ball and receiving a forward pass from Jamie Humphries.
Duncan knew it.
The Fox commentators even said how surprised he looked when the try was awarded , yet those same commentators called it a "flat style of play".
On review the bunker had every opportunity to call him offside (since they can't call on a fwd pass).
It's not like the Rabbits Needed the unfair advantage and I couldn't watch any more ... I'm sure there was more of the same , but I don't care any more.
The NRL seem incapable of addressing this disgusting Blight on our game and commentators are too gutless to be honest about it and have become as blind to it as an NRL linesman.
I can't even contain my anger sometimes and so I'm out.
It's not worth the aggravation .
Add to this the fact that Chris Butler is now being given the Bunker job an average of 3 (THREE!) matches EVERY week ... FOUR this week , FOUR in round 1 , ... I just give up.
Thinker ,Mary, Esra, Big Pete, Gummy, Steely,a, and so many others ...
I shall miss you and I will check in on your commentary now and then , ... but I'm afraid I've seen enough forward passes result in tries to last me the rest of my life.
Adieu.

P.S.
My last word on this -
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FLAT PASS !
... if it doesn't go Backwards out of the hands , it's FORWARD !

Mate,i must admit that i found watching the game more enjoyable when i wasn't in a tipping comp.
I think the NRL,in their attempt to make the game better has done the opposite. The forward passes are bad enough but it is the 6 again that i find so bloody frustrating as a spectator. I also think the 6 again is the cause of so many injuries in the game. The human body can only readjust so fast before something snaps.
The high number of high tackles is a case in point. These only happen because of the pace of the game. Players are getting binned or penalised for unavoidable actions. This also robs the fans because the play breaks down and an attack is stopped in it's tracks.
Any,mate. I hope you reconsider and hang around for a while longer.
Cheers,mate.

Hi MGM & Esra Star,
With you having watched the Storm/Rabbitohs game last night, I’m curious to know more about Storm’s current style of play (that isn’t working for them).
I’ve checked my records, and found Panthers suffered a lot of losses until after their first bye in R11 last year, after which their style seemed to change, with far more offloads coming into play.
I’ve thought the same thing about Wests Tigers this year and don’t know if it’s just my imagination!!
Would welcome input from you or other tipsters.
Cheers,
Mary

I also agree with everything you and Esra have said MGM and like Mary hope you hang around. I think I would see about 4 or so forward passes per game that officials have been told to let go because you cannot be so useless or incompetent to not see them. Cowboys player Mahoney to my eye is the worst offender. The things that get my blood pressure up are the tackles around the head that are really shoulder charges in an effort from some caveman forward to put a cheap shot on someone else. He man clown from the Dolphins last night perfect case in point, probably cost them the game. Am also amazed at the lack of basic skills some of these first graders possess, or rather don't possess. Holding onto the ball in a tackle is one, catching it in the first place is another. Wingers overunning their centre is another beauty. Completely understand your frustrations MGM, the NRL and the commentators make out that these people are outstanding athletes who should be lauded when the reality is without football most of these men would be pushing a wheelbarrow on a building site. Poor buggers, some of them only earn half a million a year too.

@ Esra, Mary & Gummy ,
Thanks for your messages :-)
... Gummy ,
I've always singled out Reed Mahoney as the most prolific forward passer in the comp. It makes it hard to like ANYTHING else he does.
And he definitely contaminated Lachlan Galvin when Galvin came to the Bulldogs ... watch Galvin from dummy half now ...
And match officials are definitely shying away from calling a shoulder charge a shoulder charge , which should incur a more severe penalty than "high contact". So much for "we want to stamp this out of the game" - HA!
.. And you may be right about officials being instructed to let "slightly fwd" passes go in the interests of not slowing down the game ... but it's no different to the sloppy "play the ball" crackdown - for a little while the game was slowed down by the whistle being blown, but players and coaches got the message pretty quickly and (somewhat) cleaned up that part of their game ... now it's become a lottery as to when the ref singles one out , but, to some extent at least, the crackdown has worked.
... BUT, as nice as it would be to see fwd passes in general play get cracked down on and cleaned up a bit , ... it's the ones in the lead up to a try that INFURIATE me.
They infuriate me because they become part of the review process that is now done for EVERY try. .. The old line from the NRL that "the Bunker can't rule on a forward pass" is pure and utter bullsh!t. ... they can rule on whether a ball has been knocked on or knocked back , .. they can rule if a player was in front of the kicker even when there's not a zone line anywhere nearby , .. they can pause and slo-mo every other aspect of play that leads up to a try ... I CAN SEE IT CLEARLY FROM MY RECLINER , ESPECIALLY WHEN THE 10MTR LINE IS RIGHT THERE WHEN THE BALL IS THROWN !!!
(Kayo has a slo-mo button and I can pause and rewind to my heart's content, but I do sit up straight and lean forward a bit for that!) haha.
... And these bogus tries often change a losing team into a winning team and vice-versa.
..So until the NRL get their head out of their collective arses and Stop Lying to us about this, I can't watch any more ... it's like Mary has said , I have to watch my blood pressure.
Submitted by MGM on
@Esra Star
Hi Esra, thanks for that mate.
It's not the tipping comp that diminishes my enjoyment of the game, it's the NRL's inability to enforce simple and clear rules.
The two tipping comps I'm in enhance my enjoyment actually, .. but if I can't stand to watch matches any longer , then there's not much point.
.. Forward passes that result in a try still being awarded is the BIG one for me, but now they've added these ludicrous rules on contesting the high ball that they are INCAPABLE of being consistent with, and these also result in tries and no-tries.
If you want perfect examples of that , just look back at the round 6 match between Roosters and Sharks when Mark Nawaqanitawase made a Total JOKE out of the new rules against the Sharks with all his one-handed bat backs on that Saturday.
But I digress.
.. I guess I could try tipping without actually watching matches but , what would that be akin to ?.... being a ch9 commentator that is incapable of seeing forward passes maybe? ... no-one should have to stoop That Low! .. :-) :-)

Mary,
It's a joy and a privilege to read your comments and interact with you.
You're so right .. I have to "watch that blood pressure", haha.
Unfortunately , it truly has become a mental health issue for me.
I have evaded "anger management classes" several times in my life even though there's been two or three times when they might have helped me , so I'm not going to let the incompetent "powers that be" at the NRL reduce me to such measures.
.. All the best to you, lovely lady.
