Week three finals

Redcliffe Dolphins vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Congratulations to the mighty mighty Dolphins, through to a preliminary final in their fourth season in the NRL. They'll likely sell out the stadium on Friday night - not bad when fans on the peninsula have a two hour public transport trek to and from the game. It makes sense that they have to beat the Roosters to make the grand final, the first team they played in the competition. Artie Beetson will be holding up the corner of a bar somewhere, looking on proudly. These sides have already met twice and the Dolphins won both convincingly. In round 15, it was 48-10, and while the Roosters were without their Origin reps neither were the Dolphins. That was the last time they played at Suncorp. In round 26 they met in Sydney, and the Dolphins won 26-12. In that contest the line-ups were virtually identical to Friday night. The only notable difference is the addition of Radley to the starting thirteen for the away side. A miraculous return from injury for Walker, and he clearly adds something to their line-up. If he plays in that week one final against the Panthers they likely win, so it's worth the punt to put him out there. The Chooks have four forwards on the bench, so if Walker gets injured early they're in a bit of a pickle. That risk, recent results between these sides, and a packed and mostly one-sided crowd, I'm tipping the Phins to make their first NRL grand final.

Verdict - Dolphins by 4

Penrith Panthers vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Accor Stadium

Déjà vu for NRL fans, with the Panthers on the cusp of appearing in their sixth grand final in seven years. Fair dynasty that, and they're a very warm favourite to get there. The Knights have done an extraordinary job after collecting the wooden spoon last season, and much (but not all) of the credit goes to the coach. Of the four teams remaining, the Knights are the team that have had their roster troubled most by injury, but they're still here. They could absolutely win this and not surprise me, particularly if Cleary has issues with his troublesome foot. I expect the Knights (through Ponga and Best) will target Talagi in the centres and again, I would not be surprised if that works. Ponga is arguably in the form of this career, but he'll need to be against this miserly Panthers defence. I'm tipping the Panthers, primarily because they dominated the Knights in round 8 at Newcastle. Additionally, no club has more finals experience than the Panthers, and that can go a long way under these circumstances.

Verdict - Panthers by 7

Wally Lewis - week three finals selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or Thursday morning

  • DOLPHINS (3rd) vs Roosters (4th)
  • PANTHERS (1st) vs Knights (7th)

I don't think Walker will last 15-20 minutes with that injury and the intensity of such a game.

BigPeteBx's picture

Just viewing his movements at training on the TV last night had me wondering as well Esra. If he cops a couple of early hard hits, he might be bench warming. Cheers and keep well - BigPete

Esra Star's picture

Thanks,mate.

The Thinker's picture

And if he does come off, I think the next viable goal kicker in the team is Cherry-Evans.

And he doesn't like taking them.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thats where the void was filled at Manly Thinker. DCE had Reubs to take the pressure. DCE doesn't mind a couple of field goals though.
Cheers and keep well - BigPete

Tedesco is okay on the boot, from memory.

Or,Marky Mark. There is nothing he cant do,,apparently.lol.

Steel Panther's picture

Surely worse case scenario is Savala replaces Walker. There's your kicking issue solved??

The Thinker's picture

You're right Steel. I forgot about the change to the interchange rules this season. I'm living in the past 😁

BigPeteBx's picture

Good alternative there Steely - I forgot that Telly (KOJAK with hair) was already doing the honours as replacement kicker.
Keep well good man. A- League also nearing 16.10.2026.

Hey Big Pete,

Trust you are well my friend. I had to laugh at your Kojak reference. I'm one on here old enough to remember that show. Enjoyed it too.

Yea A-League not too far away but been enjoying Rangers beating Celtic two weekends in a row. The international break has come at the wrong time as Rangers starting to come right after bowing out of european comps early.

A few weeks back you & Mary mentioned our old friend Mark Ashford. I think I posted on here last year that Mark moved to a place in Northern NSW called Iluka. Last I heard from him was January 2025.

Enjoy the games this weekend!

Hi Steele & Big Pete,
I'm old enough to remember the TV series 'Kojak' starring Telly Savalas, which I enjoyed too.
Have the laptop with me as I watch Roosters geta big start on the Dolphins, so making use of Bunker time!!

Cheers to all,
Mary

Wally Lewis hasn’t picked the knights all finals or barely all year and they keep proving him wrong.
Wally is a flog anyway
Up the knights

Chad Chad Chad, you obviously have never seen the emperor of Lang Park live,I know that because you would never be so disrespectful had you.

How did my man Klien go in bunker, not good, next week give him a go as a linesman.

BigPeteBx's picture

Howdy Steely - hope u r also well. Going fine here at present and then things will heat up in two weeks Vroom, vroom V8's.
Telly and the chupa chups - was a top show like Hogans Heroes and F-Troop.

I loved those two Rangers results as back in my coaching days, we had quite a few Scots came to Bathurst with Devro industry.
Watched NBL last night and Perth got over Breakers. They certainly have some travelling like Bears and Warriors will have next year in NRL.

Mark A must be loving it in NSW. Iluka is just north of Yamba and both good for fishing/tourism on North Coast of NSW at mouth of the Clarence River.

You also enjoy the weekend. Chooks into the BIG one first.
Keep well - BigPete

BigPeteBx's picture

Morning Miss Mary and hope u r also well.
Yes, I'm aware "teach", that you would be of the memories of Telly.
Enjoy the remainder of your weekend - Bunker or not☺

Keep well - Big Pete.

Thoroughly deserved result for Newcastle. Incredibly gutsy win.

Couldn't agree with you more Scotty.

Cheers
Mary
